1、增大射程增大精确制导武器的射程、可以提高发射平台的生存能力。
增加防区外交战的距离十分重要,现在的防区外武器仅仅是第一步,将来会出现更先进的系统。
远程巡航导弹的射程一般大于1000千米;防区外导弹的射弹,同时还在研制新的远程巡航导弹。
例如美海军正在研制"战术战斧"(1850千米射程)和"高超音速打击"(1100-1300千米射程)武器,美国防高级研究计划局正在研制"经济可承受的快速反应导弹演示器"(1100千米射程)。
此外,美国还十分重视发展机载防区外导弹,如AGM -130射程为35千米,AGM-84E"防区外对陆攻击导弹"(SLAM)射程为185千米,"联合直接攻击弹药"AGM-154(JSOW)射程为70千米,"联合直接攻击弹药"(SLAMER)AGM-84H射程为275千米,"联合空对地防区外导弹"(JASSM)AGM-158的射程为450千米。
