I was born in Korea, and my family came over to America when I was 10. I’m the middle child of three girls, and my parents moved so we would experience a different life. They did it for our education and to give us more of a chance than they had. We moved to Staten Island, and I went to the High School of Performing Arts in New York City. My parents were depressed when I told them I wanted to be an actress. My father suggested I try premed(医学预科). But after they saw me in plays they were really proud.
I graduated from Boston University and was doing theater in New York when I got cast in a Korean miniseries(电视连续剧). We started shooting the show in New York, and then went to Korea to finish it up. They said I would be there for three weeks, but it ended up being two months. The miniseries took off, and overnight, I became recognizable. It was sort of like Lost. It blew up. Then amazing projects were offered to me. I kept thinking, “ I’ll do one more and then go back to the US.” I ended up staying for seven years.
Some people described me as the Julia Roberts of Korea, which is a bad comparison because she’s the queen of romantic comedy. I became famous in Korea for a dramatic role in a fi lm called Shiri. I played a “La Femme Nikita” type of role. I was the girl wit h the gun—all action.

The English proficiency of Chinese women is much better than that of men, according to a study released in Shanghai yesterday, Chinese women scored three points higher than men in the English Proficiency Index(英语水平指数) released by EF Education, a language training company, mainly English. Worldside, women scored one point higher than men on average.
“This shows that Chinese women are more used to the Chinese education mode, the report said. Chinese women use their gift of language to gain success.”
However, Chinese mainlanders English proficiency ranked second to last in Asia, despite the great time and effort that many people invest in learning the language, the report said, China’s mainland is ranked the 36th in the index of 54 countries and regions where English is not the native language. That’s down by seven places comparing with that last year. The Chinese mainland belongs to the low-proficiency tier(低水平层次) and is ranked just above Thailand in Asia. This year’s index has increased the weight of listening tests, while decreasing the importance of grammar and vocabulary exams, which partly caused the ranking change, researchers said. Moreover, test-oriented(以考试为目的) and rote-based(死记硬背)learning methods often used in China hurt the language skills of Chinese students, education experts said. The study compared test scores of more than 1.7 million adults in the 54 countries and regions. Sweden, Denmark and the Netherlands have the best command of English, while Libya has the lowest English proficiency level. European countries generally performed well. But Italy, Spain and Portugal, some of the countries at the heart of the euro zone crisis, are being dragged down by poor English, according to the report. Singapore is 12th, the best in Asia, followed by Malaysia and India, South Korea, at 21st, and Japan, at 22nd, performed disappointingly low despite their focus on education, the report said.
One in every four people frequently uses English at work on China’s mainland, nevertheless nearly 15 percent said they never use English, lower than the world average level, according to the study.

Air pollution is one of the hottest topics at present because poor air quality is an important factor in both the incidence and cause of respiratory(呼吸道) diseases.
Zhong Nanshan, a deputy to the NPC and a member of the CAE, said recently when the concentration of PM2.5 rises by 10 micrograms per cubic meter, hospitalization may rise by as much as 3.1 percent. Meanwhile, when the concentration of PM2.5 rises from 25 mgs per cubic meter to 200, the average daily death rate may rise to 11 percent.
Zhi Xiuyi, a leading expert in lung cancer treatment and also vice-president of the CATS, said medical authorities used to focus on tobacco control as a primary means of preventing lung cancer. “But in fact, air pollution is no less harmful than smoking and our research team released a report earlier this year showing that the cancer rate in Beijing is closely related to industrialization,” he said.
The report, conducted by the Beijing Institute of Cancer Research, shows that the number of cancer patients in China has increased markedly during the past ten years. Chaoyang District, the city’s main area of industrialization, has the highest incidence of cancer, almo st double that of Yanqing, an area on the outskirts of the city. About four out of 1000 Chaoyang residents have some form of the disease, with lung cancer at the top of the list.
“The risk of having cancer largely depends on the length of exposure and the concentration of noxious gases(有毒气体的浓度),” said Zhi. In response to the doubt whether seven years' exposure to poor air quality will almost result in cancer, Zhi said the time scale was taken from research overseas that suggested the rate of incidence generally peaked in the seventh year of exposure to a heavily polluted environment.
12. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Medical researches on environment.
B. The disadvantages in big cities.
C. The only reason for the lung cancer.
D. Poor air quality contributing to lung cancer.
13. What can you conclude from the 3rd paragraph?
A. Compared with smoking, air pollution is less harmful.
B. Air pollution is as harmful as smoking.
C. It is very important to prevent people from smoking.
D. People realize the importance of keeping healthy.
14. If there were 3,000,000 people in Chaoyang District, how many would have respiratory diseases?
A. 16000.
B. 12000.
C. 8000.
D. 7500.
15.What can you infer from the passage?
A. Industrialization has its weakness as well as strengths.
B. The average death rate rises with different ages and places.
C. The air in Beijing is much more polluted than that in the other cities.
D. The more heavily-polluted air you breathe in, the sooner you’ll have cancer.

Sometimes willpower is a lot like the television remote control hard to find just when you want it most. 16 But there are ways to increase your willpower.
Don’t try to change your economic situation, win a promotion and lose weight all on the same morning. Set one clear, specific goal and make a realistic plan to achieve it. Extra willpower sometimes requires extra energy, so don’t spread yourself too thin. 17
Whatever your goal is, don’t expect to achieve it overnight. 18 If you are trying to kick a coffee habit, start by replacing your morning cup of coffee with a glass of water, instead of promising never to drink coffee again. Congratulate yourself on the small achievements. These successes help your willpower grow.
19 Ask friends, family or colleagues for assistance and tell them exactly how they can help. If your credit card bills have risen, for instance, let friends know that you are cutting back on expenses. Suggest having a common dinner instead of meeting at an expensive restaurant. Find support group or organization related to your goal and attend their meetings. You can get valuable advice, understanding and information.
If possible, change your environment to encourage positive behavior. Want to get in shape? Keep an set of workout clothes in your office as a reminder to stop by the gym on the way home. Quitting smoking? 20
A. Focus on one goal at a time.
B. Real success takes time.
C. Change your environment to change your life.
D. Improve your willpower by a support network.
E. Changing your behavior requires more than willpower.
F. Avoid bars or restaurants where you might be attracted to light up.
G. Breaking a bad habit or forming a new and healthy one can be difficult.

For one thing,I hope to gain more knowledge of gardening, which can help me to major in the gardening after attending college. Besides, I can realize the bitterness of the gardeners to treasure plants more, and also , I wish to get more information about gardening so as to study it more easily when I enter university. For another, after graduation from college,I will devote my life to cultivating flowers and grasses to turn our country into a more beautiful state ,which will attract more foreigners to visit .
Looking forward to your early reply.
