第二部分阅读理解:(第一节20小题,第二节5小题;每小题2分,满分50分)
A
Famous centenarians (百岁老人) are still active in arts and science, unwilling to retire. “Those who stand still, die,” says Oliveira, the Portuguese film director. He knows from experience what it means, as he has reached 102 and is still active in his profession. Every year, Oliveira produces a film and is currently working on his next project. “You have to work, wor k, work in order to forget that death is not far away,” he said. When asked about his age, Oliveira said modestly: “Mother nature(自然母亲) gave me what it took from others.”[
Being mentally and physically fit in old age is partly a matter of luck, but it also has something to do with character. Not every white-haired person is wise. Social skills, openness and the ability to train the brain are vital for senior citizens.
Along with the architect Niemeyer (103), Nobel Prize winner Montalcini (101) and director Maetzig (100), Oliveira is one of those who are fit and active. It would be very wrong to think of them as members of a sickly elderly generation.
Another master in his profession is the architect Niemeyer. The 103-year-old Brazilian is best known for his fantastic buildings in Brasilia, but he also speaks out on behalf of the poor. “The role of the architect is to struggle for a better world where we can develop a form of architecture that serves everyone and not just a rich few,” said Niemey er recently. He spends almost every day working in his office in Copacabana, and even when he falls ill he keeps working on ideas: After an operation he composed a music tune in the clinic.
Another man who could sing a song about age is 107-year-old Heesters. The Dutch-born
opera singer spent most of his life performing in Germany, where he still works. Recently Heesters said: “I want to be at least 108 years old.” He also plans to keep performing. “Should I just sit at home and wait until they come an d pick me up?” Heesters has not given up trying to add to his awards and is looking for a “good stage role”.
Italian scientist Montalcini, who is 101 years old and is still active in medical science, has described the force that keeps driving her on: “Progress is created through imperfection.” In 1986 she and her lab colleague were awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine for their work on nerve growth factor. She’s convinced that humans grow on challenges.
Age’s no problem to some high achievers. The p ast also has many examples of elderly people who stayed very active into old age.
41. From the first two paragraphs, we can see ________.
A. being active at 102 is possible for everybody
B. Oliveira’s mother helps him to live a long life
C. being fit in old age is a matter of luck and character
D. social skills and wisdom are difficult for old people
42. How many centenarians are mentioned in this passage?
A. 4
B. 5
C. 6
D. 7
43. It is ________ who speaks out for the poor and builds houses for all.
A. Oliveira
B. Niemeyer
C. Montalcini
D. Maetzig
44. By saying “Should I just sit at home and wait until they come and pick me up?”, Heesters shows us he ________.
A. wants to sit or lie in comfort
B. is waiting for people to pick him up
C. is willing to work till he dies
D. prefers to give performance at home
45. The best title for this passage may be “________”.
A. The Older, the Wiser You’ll Be
B. Progress, Created Through Imperfection
C. How to Live to Be a Centenarian
D. Age No Problem to Some High Achievers

Dogs can bring joy and companionship into our lives. Coming home to a wagging tail and an eager smile creates a feeling of love and happiness. In fact, having a pet can reduce stress, lower blood pressure and relieve depression. Here are tips for handling, training, and owning dogs.
Choosing the right dog for you. Here you can see we have a German Shepherd (牧羊犬), a Boxer (拳师犬), and an English Bulldog. A Shepherd is a guarding dog; the Boxer is more of a working dog; A Bulldog likes to hang out, which is kind of a couch potato, if you’re a laid back person and don’t want to run down the beach with a dog, the perfect dog is a Bulldog.
Approaching an unfamiliar dog.The first thing about approaching an unfamiliar dog, is that if you’re going to reach your hands towards the dog, you need to do it from underneath, so your hand is not given to the dog in a threatening manner, which can be interpreted as being hit. You let them smell you first. When they smell y ou, don’t flinch (畏缩), or take a sudden move, because you can scare the dog, and get bitten. You’re to show your friendly side to the dog.
Pet food. The first thing about buying pet food is what’s the right type of food for your dog. Usually cheap pet foods are not good for dogs, they tend to have more health problems throughout their life. So starting on a healthy food is important. Look for food with no fillers, and no artificial flavors, or dyes. When feeding them, it’s good to give them a metal bow l. A lot of times the plastic bowls can cause anger to their mouth.
Exercising your dog. Walking is always a great form of exercise, good for you, great for dogs. And swimming is another great form of exercise for you too. And sometimes what you should do is get on the bicycle, and let them get a good run on, and that allows you to maintain your position as leader in front of them. Exercising them also keeps them from getting into bored behaviors like chewing and digging and that sort of thing.
Biting dog. If you have a biting dog, the best thing to do, along with a firm no, is trying not to be emotional about it. Just be firm. Give it a little pop beneath the chin (下巴) to close its mouth, and it’ll remember the result. You can trap it into putting its mouth on you. And then make it close the jaw, creating that pop sound, which it doesn’t like.

The U.S. government, which played as “the world judge of human rights,” made attacks on the human rights situation in almost 200 countries and regions again in its newly-issued Country Reports on Human Rights Practices for 2013. However, the U.S. carefully avoided mentioning its own human rights problems. In fact, there were still serious human rights problems in the U.S in 2013, with the situation in many fields deteriorating.
The number of violent crimes has risen sharply. The U.S. listed 1,214,464 violent crimes in 2012, of which 14,827 are murders, 84,376 rapes, 354,522 robberies and 760,739 serious violent attacks.
The U.S. government took freedom in monitoring (监控) its citizens, which shocked the world. Edward Snowden, a former CIA employee, disclosed a monitoring program carried out by the U.S. government. Under the program, the government rudely tracked citizens’ private emails, chats, audio and video data, documents and photos, identifying their locations, their traveling companions, and other personal information.
The U.S. citizens’ economic rights are still under challenge. Unemployment rates are high in the US. In 2007, nearly 80% people aged 25 to 54 in the U.S. had a job. In 2013, only about 76% people in that age group were working. Wealth gap in the US is widening. More than 47 million U.S. people living in poverty in 2012, and the poverty rate reached 15%. About 6.4 million people aged 65 and o lder were poor. The current gap between America’s rich and poor is the widest in history from 2012 all the way back to 1913. The richest 10 percent’s share of total income was 50.4% in 2012.
According to a survey carried out in 2012, at least 136 African-Americans were killed by policemen or security guards in the year. A latest report said that despite the fact that drug use was about the same for both black and white Americans, blacks were four times as likely as whites to be arrested for drug possession.
Some mainstream media, social organizations and politicians declare racist comments. On October 16, 2013, American Broadcasting Company’s Jimmy Kimmel Show aired a remark saying “kill everyone in China” and promoted racial hatred. It aroused unease and protests from Asian Americans especially Chinese Americans.
Sex discrimination(歧视) is still serious, and children’s rights are not well protected in the United States. Women are facing serious employment discrimination. On average, women made about 81% of the earnings of male full-time wage and salary. Women’s average annual income is $11,500 less than that of men’s. Women experienced frequent violent and sexual attacks.

Forty years ago, I was an instructor in the military (军事) school, when young Scoresby was given his first examination. I felt extremely sorry for him. Everybody answered the questions intelligently, while he didn’t know anything. He was a nice, pleasant young man. It was painful to see him stand there giving stupid answers.
I knew when examined again he would be thrown out. So I tested him and worked him like a slave. I made him work over and over again on a few questions which I knew he would be asked. He came through very well on the day of the examination. By some strange, lucky accident, he was asked no questions except those I made him study.
I thought the end that would destroy him would be the mathematics examination. I decided to make his end as painless as possible. So, I pushed facts into his stupid head for hours. Finally, I let him go to the examination to experience what I was sure would be his dismissal (开除) from school. But the result shocked me out of my mind. He took first prize! And he got the highest praise. I felt guilty ——what I was doing was not right. But I only wanted to make his dismissal less painful for him. I never dreamed it would lead to such strange, laughable results.
Then, the war broke out. I felt sad for him that there had to be a war. Peace would have given this donkey a chance to escape from being found out so stupid. I waited for the worst to happen. It did. He was appointed a captain!
I thought I was responsible to the country for this. I must go with him and protect the nation against him. So, I joined up with him. And away we went to the field.
And there ——oh, it was terrible. Mistakes, fearful mistakes ——he never did anything right ——nothing but mistakes. But nobody knew how stupid he really was. And what kept me in a continual fear was that every mistake he made increased his glory and fame.
He continued to climb up, over the dead bodies of his superiors (上级). Then, in the hottest moment of one battle down went our colonel (上校). My heart jumped into my mouth, for Scoresby took his place. The battle grew hotter. The English troops were falling back all over the field. Our regiment (团) occupied an extremely important position. One mistake now would bring total disaster. What did Scoresby do? He just mistook his left hand for his right hand. An order came for him to fall back and support our right. Instead, he moved forward and went over the hill to the left. We were over the hill before this mad movement could be discovered and stopped. And
what did we find? A large Russian army waiting! And what happened? Were we all killed? That is exactly what would have happened in ninety-nine cases out of a hundred. But no ——those surprised Russians thought we must be the whole British army, instead of only one regiment. They turned and escaped. Away they went over the hill and down into the field in wild disorder. We ran after them. In no time, there was the greatest turn-around ever seen. The British turned defeat into a sweeping and shining victory.
The commander looked on, with wonder, surprise and joy. He sent for Scoresby, and hugged him on the field in front of all the armies. Scoresby became famous that day as a great military leader, honored throughout the world. That honor will never disappear while history books last.
Look at his chest, flooded with medals. Each is the record of some great stupidity or other.
55. Why did the storyteller help Scoresby before each examination?
A. He understood Scoresby’s potential talents.
B. He particularly liked nice, pleasant students.
C. He had some special relations with Scoresby.
D. He thought it his duty to help a difficult student.
56. When Scoresby was appointed a captain, the storyteller felt ________.

58. In one battle, when English were falling back all over the field, Scoresby ________.
A. made a mistake in the direction
B. disobeyed the order on purpose
C. was ordered to start an attack
D. was determined to fight back
59. In the eyes of the world, Scoresby was ________.
A. a lucky dog
B. a great military man
C. a powerful leader
D. an international hero
60. The best title for this passage is ________.
A. Fool
B. Trick
C. Luck

第二节:下面文章中有五处(第61-65题)需要添加小标题。
请从下列A、B、C、D、E
和F中选出符合各段意思的的小标题,并在答题纸上将相应选项的标号涂黑。
选项中有一项是多余选项。
A. Facebook’s advertising
B. Typical activities on Facebook
C. Suggestions about the future of Facebook
D. Problems with trust in personal information
E. Product purchase following Facebook’s friends
F. People’s attitude towards the development of Facebook
Facebook (脸谱网) is a communicating tool similar to QQ in China, shortly after its coming into being, it became popular with tens of millions of clients (用户). Being one of them, Jane is talking about Facebook. The followings are her descriptions about it:
61.________
The most common activity I use Facebook for is to see what people are up to. I like to look through friends’ photo albums to see where they’ve been and who they’re with. It’s also a nice way to message friends casually. I created a Facebook group for a certain club, so I just send out messages to the group when a meeting or event is coming up.
62.________
When Facebook was first started, everyone in my age wanted to be on it. The first version didn’t have any of the fancy things—we could just message, play poke and befriend. It was too flat. When they started to add new features like the wall, photo albums, video capabilities, and groups, people became more interested. But then Facebook took it too far. Now I find Facebook has quite a few useless features. I prefer an older version of just the basics—messaging, walls, photos and groups.
63.________
I don’t add anything too personal to my profile. My only concern is that friends can post pictures of me that I don’t want to share. I download them but they will still be on the Internet. I don’t think that’s a good idea. I think when you don’t want a phot o to be shared, it should be deleted from the photo album.
64.________
It wouldn’t bother me one bit. It’s the same as any other recommendation method. I think it’s
a good place to sell/buy. You see your friends are into it, so you feel the connection right there —it seems like a great time to make a purchase. If Facebook had this service setup, people could just go on to see what new songs their friends are listening to - one click and they can purchase the songs on music websites, or rent new movies on movie websites etc.
65.________
If Facebook keeps trying to stick in useless applications to attract advertisers, it may sink in the future. But if it allows users to go to music or movie websites directly from their friends profiles, it may become the new social networking search engine that people use to look through their friends stuff when they need advice about what to buy. If they include a feature like favorite stores to shop at, they will definitely expand on the possibilities.

Ⅴ. 第二节书面表达:(满分30分)
Possible version 1:
No doubt everyone hopes to be successful. However, this doesn’t always happen as expected. For example, I can still remember the sports meet in middle school, in which I took part in the
800-meter race. At first I thought I could not finish such a long distance for I had no talent for sports. But I decided to practice running every day. Months of hard work rewarded me with the third place. Although I was not the first one, I finished the race. To me this was a success.
Personally, process is more important than result. As long as we have done our utmost in the process, we won’t feel sorry for ourselves though the result is not so satisfactory. (120 words)
Possible version 2:
Success, as is known, results from constant efforts. However, not everyone can achieve desired success. Take my friend, Alex, for example, who has been dreaming of being a writer when he was only 15. After numerous attempts, his writings still couldn’t be published. Now he’s a worker and yet he keeps on writing in his spare time. Though he can’t reach his aim, he never loses heart.
In my view, failure as well as success is part of our life. No matter how hard we try, sometimes we may still fail, but we can learn something from failure. In fact, failure doesn’t mean we lose everything. Only when we face failure properly can we understand the real meaning of success. (120 words)。
