It is sometimes said that strange flying objects have been seen high up in the sky. People call these strange objects Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs). These UFOs caused a lot of interest. Some of the reports about them are difficult to believe. Some have been explained in scientific ways. Others have never been explained. Here is an account of UFOs from a report.
Dennis Burdens, who wrote an article, tells us that he once saw a UFO himself. He was having dinner one night with a friend near Tripoli, Libya, and after dinner the two men walked across a yard to his room to look at some papers. Burdens noticed that the moon looked strange that night.
"It wasn't the moon", was the reply.
They watched the light and saw that it was moving. It seemed to be an object rather like a big plate. In some ways it looked like smoke with a light on it, but it wasn't smoke because it didn't change its shape. It was moving in a regular way. That is to say, it didn't go suddenly faster or more slowly, and it didn't go higher or lower. So the two men decided that there must be men in it.
After that, Burdens said that he felt eyes looking at him. He was being watched in the darkness.
When it was nearer, they noticed that the bottom parts were brighter than the top. The bottom was yellow and the top red. Then the object suddenly turned away and left Libya, moving very fast.
On a later day Burdens talked to other people about it, and he found some who had seen it. They all described it in the same way.
Could they all be mistaken?

People had known about steam power for hundreds of years. But they did not know how to apply it to machines. About 300 years ago, some engineers discovered that they could use steam power to force water out of deep mines. This helped miners dig deeper than ever. But little more was done with steam power until one man, James Watt, discovered how to make steam turn a wheel.
When he was a boy, James Watt's parents had scolded (责骂) him for playing with mechanical things. There were few advanced (先进的) machines then. And almost nobody could make a living by fixing them. So Watt's parents thought that playing around with machines was a waste of time. But someone asked Watt to repair a steam coal-mine pump. Watt fixed the pump and he began to build models of other pumps.
Once Watt had built his first steam engine, steam power was used to do many things. Machines were built that could weave (编制), grind (磨) flour, drive a boat or a train, and even make other machines.
Nearly anything that needed pushing or turning could be powered by steam. Within 50 years of Watt's invention, steam engines were producing and transporting things in ways that were impossible by hand, wind, or water power.

七、阅读理解(30%)
阅读短文,根据短文内容选择最佳选项填空。

Women earn less than men do. For example, in 1988 the hourly wages (工资) of women in the U. S. were 26% less than those of men. The gap between male and female incomes varies with age. The gap between the labor incomes of young women and young men is much smaller than that between middle-aged women and men. It is also clear that jobs in which women are concentrated (集中的) pay less. The larger the number of workers who are women in an industry, the lower the average wages.
Why do women earn less than men do? Are the differences explained by the fact that women are looked down upon? If so, the government has to intervene (干预), to force the employers to pay equal wages for equal jobs. However, there is no agreement among economists about the causes of the gap. One view argues that women on the average have chosen low-paying jobs in which workers enjoy the freedom of entering and leaving the labor force, which reduces their years of experience relative (相对于) to men. Other people say the gap can also be explained
by the difference in educational background.
Much of the gap, however, has not been fully explained. It might be the result of some prejudice (偏见) against women. It is this part that has produced calls for government action. What would happen if the government did intervene to increase the wages paid to women? One possibility is that incomes for women as a group might actually decline (下降). An increase in wage decreases the quantity of labor input (输入) demanded, resulting in decreased employment as the rate of hiring new workers declines. The result will be a surplus (剩余) of labor. Those who can find jobs might be better off while those who had jobs might find themselves out of work.
66. The difference in labor incomes is most clear between _______.
A. young men and young women
B. young women in the same industry
C. middle-aged men and middle-aged women
D. middle-aged women in the same industry
67. Some economists believe women earn less than men partly because _____.
A. women are less experienced than men
B. women are only provided with low-paying jobs
C. women have more freedom in selecting jobs
D. there are more than enough women in the labor force
68. Which of the following CANNOT be inferred from the second paragraph?
A. Women receive less education than men.
B. Women are not as productive as men.
C. Levels of education are closely related to productivity.
D. Goods produced by men are not as good as those by women.
69. What does the author suggest that the government should do for women
workers?
A. To ensure equal pay for women.
B. To explain why women are paid less.
C. To force employers to hire more women.
D. No solution is clearly suggested.
70. What might happen if women's wages were raised?
A. The input of labor would be increased.
B. The unemployment rate would go up.
C. Those who have jobs would all become better off.
D. Women as a group would earn more than before.

When researchers made their first clone of an animal "Dolly the Sheep" in 1997,
one doctor said: "The genie(基因) is out of the bottle." But then he tried to actually create the "genie" by making a human clone.
Dr Panayiotis Zavos told the public on October 5 that he could create the first cloned human before the end of the year. He is an expert on human copying and breeding (繁殖) from the University of Kentucky in the United States. His workers have been stopped from carrying out research in most European Union countries, but Zavos said that fact was not slowing progress.
"It is going well enough so we may try the first production of cloned embryo (胚胎) in the very near future. That is, thee or four months from now," Cypriot-born Zavos said. "Human cloning could, in effect, create a copy of another living or deed person.
Zavos insisted there was nothing harmful in the project. As an expert on human reproduction, he said he is only interested in helping couples who cannot naturally have babies to have a child.
"We are not interested in cloning people like Bin Leden, Michael Jackson or Michael Jordan," the doctor added. "We are only interested in helping a father who does not have the ability to have a biological child of his own."
Zavos said thousands of childless people from all over the world are helping in their research. He would not say where the research is under way, but indicated that it is in more than one country.
71. What is the attitude of most European Union countries towards Zavos'
human cloning research?
