Elizabeth Barrett was born at Coxhoe Hall, Durham, England. She was educated at home, learning Greek, Latin, and several other languages at an early age. In 1819, her father arranged for the printing of one of her poems, and she was 13 at the time.
In 1821, Elizabeth injured her spine(脊椎) because of a fall. She spent most of her time in her room writing poetry. In 1844, Robert Browning wrote to Elizabeth admiring her poems. He continued to write to her and they were engaged (订婚) in 1845.
Elizabeth’s father didn’t agree on the engagement. In 1846, Elizabeth and Robert secretly got married. Soon the couple ran off to Italy, where Elizabeth’s health improved. She continued to live in Italy for the rest of her life.
In 1850, Elizabeth’s best-known book of poems Sonnets from the Portuguese was published. The book recorded the growth of her love for
Robert. He often called her “my little Portuguese” because of her dark skin.
Many of her poems expressed strong disagreement with what she considered unfair social conditions. She also wrote poems asking for political (政治的) freedom for Italy and other countries controlled by foreign nations.

Going back to the land can be done. It is called “living the simple life”. But we are so used to our computers, cell phones, and supermarkets; we don’t know the word “simple” anymore. In fact, it is not hard to grow a garden in your backyard if you own a home.
We all have gotten lazy in the last two generations. All we seem to care about is who or what we can take from. The land that we are building on is starting to run out. The mountains are being torn down to make way for a million dollar home. Why not just build a simple home to blend in with (十分协调) the land?
Before we could even think about returning to the land, we have to give the land back to the earth. Stop tearing down the forests for needless million dollar homes. Stop cutting into the mountains because you want to escape the truth around you. Stop ripping up the parks to make more highways.
Plant more flowers so the bees can have a chance to survive. Plant a tree now and you may save the planet later. Pick up trash when you see it on the ground. We need to teach our children how to start conservation (保护) now before their generation has to live underground, or worse they won’t have a next generation.
Today I walked outside and it is supposed to be winter, but it is 80 degrees. The flowers are blooming (开放) too early because we cannot control our habits of greed (贪婪). I cannot understand why we are killing the only place we have to live on. We can spend billions on needless things that pollute this
planet, but we can’t spend pennies on seeds that w ould save this planet. What
a shame!
54. Which of the following can be one example of “living the simple life”?

In sports, getting benched (坐板凳) is usually a bad thing. But at a school in Florida, a girl has taken a bench and turned it into something entirely different —a place to find friends. It’s called the “Friendship Bench”. And it’s an idea of a girl, whose name is Acacia Woodley.
Acacia’s attitude towards life can be reflected in a question she recently asked —“What if we spend as much time on kindness as we do on cruelty?” It’s a philosophy (人生观) Acacia has learned to live her own life. She was born without a right hand. And her left hand didn’t form properly. But Acacia says that cannot stop her from achieving her dreams. “You need to believe in your dreams. If you don’t believe in your dreams, I can definitely tell you that your dreams are not going to come true,” she said.
Acacia came up with the idea after seeing kids get bullied (欺侮) at school. She says she has also experienced that — kids whispering about her or picking on her because she’s diffe rent.
The Friendship Bench looks like other benches. It has armrests and a place to lean back. But there are also words painted on it —words such as “hope”, “respect”, “listen” and “dream”. Acacia put it together with the help from her mother and brother.
Any time a kid feels like that he or she needs a friend, all that kid needs to do is sit on the bench. It is then up to other kids — or grownups — to fill that need. “It’s a perfect idea,” Lori, the principal of Palm Bay Elementary, said. “It’s something we need so badly.”
The Friendship Bench has been such a success at Palm Bay Elementary that other schools are now considering having one, too. “There’s a saying in my classroom,” Acacia said. “It says, ‘If you can dream it, you can achieve it.’”

Helen Keller was one of the greatest women in the 20th century. She was born in 1880 and died in 1968. When she was 19 months old, she became blind and deaf because of a serious illness. From then on she lived in darkness and silence.
When she was seven, her parents found a teacher, Miss Sullivan, for her. Miss Sullivan had a lot of difficulties in teaching Helen. With Helen’s strong will and intelligence, combined with Miss Sullivan’s skill and patience, they overcame all the difficulties. Helen became a capable student and finally she received a university degree in English literature. Later on she devoted all herself to helping the blind and deaf children.。
