We often overlook and completely forget how dangerous the game of baseball can be for the players on the field, and even for the fans, who gather very closely as baseballs and bats fly around at the park at terrifying speeds.
Unfortunately,we were hit with a troubling reminder on Friday night at Fenway Park,Boston as one fan reportedly suffered life-threatening injuries after being struck in the face by the barrel (击球端) of a broken bat.The scary incident happened because a player hit the ball hard, causing his bat to break at the handle. The broken barrel flew into the stands to the left of home plate (the place that the player has to stand next to in order to hit the ball, and the last place they have to touch to score a point) where it reportedly struck the fan.According to Boston police, the fan was taken to Beth Israel
Deaconess Medical Center, where she's currently receiving treatment for her injuries.
A security guard who witnessed the accident said the woman, who was sitting with her husband and son at the time, suffered serious injuries. Her son sitting near her was terribly frightened.A number of fans witnessed the accident, including Alex Merlas of Brookline.“Brett_Lawrie hit the ball and the bat broke in half near the end of the bat,” Merlas said.“It hit the fan on the top of her forehead and there was a lot of bleeding.I don't think I'v e ever seen that much blood.”
That game was delayed temporarily so the fan could be transported to an ambulance waiting at one of the gates inside the ballpark.Fans were left shocked and shaken as the stadium crew cleaned up the scene.Players could be seen discussing it as well,as all who witnessed it were obviously affected. Those who were watching the accident wished the woman fan and her family the very best.

When I watched wild baboons (狒狒) in Africa,it seemed as if they ate everything. But did they really? They have simple stomachs. If baboons eat foods that have a lot of fiber, they get very little nutrition from that food, and then they don't have room for more nutritious foods.Baboons need foods with a lot of nutrients.Baboons should be picky eaters.
In the 1990s,a team of primatologists (灵长类动物学家) solved this riddle.By watching wild baboons, the team of primatologists found that the monkeys ate whatever they could find as long as the foods had a lot of protein and fat.Baboons avoided foods with lots of fiber. Many foods had high
protein or high fat,and many foods had low fiber. So it looked as if baboons ate everything.
Research on baboon foods made me wonder how baboons found their foods.I knew baboons were smart. For their size, they have big brains, and they remember a lot of things.Even though some baboon troops have more than 100 monkeys, baboons easily remember their friends and enemies.I reasoned that baboons might memorize the locations of some foods.
For 18 months I lived in a tent in Ruaha National Park in Tanzania.I camped next to the river.I studied only male baboons because females have babies, and I didn't want to scare the little ones. Each morning,I picked a different male monkey.Everywhere he went,I followed.Every time he ate,I wrote down the food type and how much he ate.
I discovered that baboons did not find baobab trees (猴面包树) randomly.Instead, the monkeys walked quickly and directly to baobab trees. The same was not true for other foods.Baboons used more random patterns to find elephant dung (粪便),young antelopes, and grasses.Sometimes they found these foods on their way to the baobab trees!
28.What does the underlined part “this riddle” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Where wild baboons live. B.How wild baboons find foods.
C.If wild baboons eat everything. D.If wild baboons have simple stomachs.
29.What do we know about wild baboons?
A.They have few friends. B.They are not very smart.
C.They have many enemies. D.They have a good memory.
30.What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.How the author studied wild baboons.
B.The living environment of wild baboons.
C.How female wild baboons give birth to babies.
D.Differences between male and female wild baboons.
31.It can be inferred that wild baboons know the locations of________.
A.grasses B.baobab trees
C.elephant dung D.young antelopes

Supermarket shelves are filled with plant-based alternatives to cow milk, including soy, nut, and coconut milk. These products ar e popular with consumers who cannot drink cows’ milk for health
reasons, as well as with those concerned about animal welfare and environmental sustainability. While the dairy-free(非乳制的) options work well with cereal or in coffee, they fail miserably when it comes to making milk-based products like cheese or yogurt. However, these shortcomings may soon be a thing of the past, thanks to a new company in California, which has figured out how to create animal-free milk in a laboratory!
Perumal Gandhi and Ryan Pandya founded the company in 2014 after becoming increasingly annoyed with the lack of cows’ milk-free alternatives, particularly for cheese. For Gandhi, who stopped consuming animal products five years earlier due to environmental and animal welfare concerns, the motivation to create a better alternative stemmed from his love of cheesy pizza. Pandya was spurred into taking action after being forced to eat some “really bad” dairy-free cream cheese on his sandwich
The two MIT biomedical engineering scientists decided to join forces to create a more realistic alternative to dairy-based products. In their university lab, the pair spent nine months first isolating cow DNA then inserting it into yeast(酵母). This genetic modification enabled the yeast to produce the necessary milk proteins. The final step of the process involved mixing the proteins with some plant nutrients and fats.
The dairy-free milk not only tastes like the real thing but is also healthier, has a longer shelf life and, most important of all, is Earth friendly. According to the company’s website, when compared to conventional milk production, their process uses 65% less energy, creates 84%o less greenhouse gas emissions and requires 91% less land and an amazing 98% less water! Best of all, since it contains real milk proteins, the product behaves like the cow-produced version, which means vegetarian consumers will no longer have to deal with soggy cheese on their sandwiches and pizzas.
The company plans to bring their creation to market later this year and their first product will most likely be cheese since there are already numerous good cows’ milk alternatives available to consumers.
32. The underlined word "those" in paragraph 1 refers to_______.
A. alternatives
B. people
C. products
D. reasons
33. The company s founders were motivated to make the new product because of_______.
A. their deep concern for the environment
B. their worry that farm animals were poorly treated
C the over-consumption of the dairy-based products
D. the poor taste of dairy-free cheese presently available
34. What can be inferred from paragraph 4?
A. The dairy-free products cannot be stored for a long time.
B. The new products will taste better than dairy-based ones.
C. Cow farming causes considerable environmental damage.
D. The dairy-free milk will be more expensive than cow’s milk.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Making Milk without Cows
B. New Milk Saves Planet
C. Fresher Milk, Better Future
D. Healthier Cheese

Before 2000 BC,the Babylonians used a year of 12 alternating (交替的) 29-day and 30-day months, giving a 354-day year according to the movement of the Moon.In contrast, the Mayans of Central America had more references.__40__Based on the cycles of these different planets, the Mayans established 260-day and 365-day calendars. Our present civilization has adopted a 365-day solar calendar with a leap year (闰年) occurring every fourth year.
A.Each of these periods was then divided into 30 parts.
B.Large mechanical clocks began to appear in some Italian cities.
C.They relied not only on the Sun and the Moon, but also the planet Venus.
D.These advances in design were early models of truly accurate timekeeping.
E.Based on this knowledge,they created a 365-day calendar around 3100 BC.
