I would have to look for the cats after the fire was put out.
It took a long time to finally bring the big fire under control, but we did it. No one inside was hurt.
At that point I was free to investigate the cat noises. There was still a lot of smoke and heat coming from the building. I followed the meowing (猫
叫) to a spot on the sidewalk near the front of the garage. There , crying and huddle together, were five terrified kittens. They mu st have been inside the building, as their fur was badly burnt.

The veterinarian (兽
医) told me they would observe the kittens and their mother ove rnight, but they weren’t optimistic about the mother’s chances. About a week later, I found out she was going to live. We name d her Scarlet, because of her reddened skin.
Knowing what Scarlet suffered for her kittens, I was moved by s eeing her reunited with them. She touched each of them again, nose to nose, to make sure they were all safe. She had risked h er life five separate times----
and it had paid off. All of her babies were alive.
As a firefighter, I see heroism (英雄事

It is difficult for doctors to help a person with a damaged brain. Without enough bl ood, the brain lives for only three to five minutes. More often the doctors can’t fix t he damage. Sometimes they are afraid to try something to help because it is dang erous to work on the brain. The doctors might make the person worse if he operat es on the brain.
Dr. Robert White, a famous professor and doctor, thinks he knows a way to help. He thinks doctors should make the brain very cold. If it is very cold, the brain can l ive without blood for 30 minutes. This gives the doctor a longer time to do somethi ng for the brain.
Dr. White tried his idea on 13 monkeys. First he taught them to do different jobs, a nd then he operated on them. He made the monkeys' blood go through a machine . The machine cooled the blood. Then the machine sent the blood back to the mo nkeys' brains. When the brain’s temperature was 10°C, Dr. White stopped the blo od to the brain. After 30 minutes he turned the blood back on. He warmed the blo od again. After their operations the monkeys were like they had been before. The y were healthy and busy. Each one could still do the jobs the doctor had taught th em.
