Horseback riding might not seem like a typical New York City activity, but one program has several horse farms throughout the city’s busy districts. GallopNYC provides lessons to veterans(老兵) and people with disabilities — horseback riding is their therapy(疗法).
Olivia Diver visits the GallopNYC location in the Howard Beach neighborhood in Queens. Diver has only been riding horses for a few months, but says she’s already felt the benefits. “It helped me come out of my comfor t zone and be less shy and less in my shell,” she said. Trying something new shows her she can accomplish other things as well.
James Wilson, executive director at GallopNYC, says there are many ways horses can be therapeutic. “The horse sees the world in the way somebody with
post-traumatic stress disor-der (PTSD) might see the world, in a really guarded, sort of anxious way,” he explained. “So,somebody with PTSD and a horse can sort of partner together and see the world in the same way and kind of take care of each other.” Horses can also help with physical disabilities. After two years of therapeutic riding, a teenager, who had so little core strength that his mother had to be in the bathtub with him, had enough core strength that he could be in the shower by himself. Wilson said, “The movement of the horse will loosen up muscles that might be really tight. And the movement helps stimulate other body parts and other muscles that you might not use. ”
“CallopNYC has about 1,000 people on is waitlist for less ons, but prioritizes people with disabilities and veterans. We believe that everybody benefits from the time on a horse, so if you want to ride a horse, come on, let’s go,” Wilson said. Lessons are $55, but the non-profit fundraises to help cover or lower the cost for customers who may need support.
24.Why does GallopNYC offer the lessons?
A.To make horse riding typical in NYC.
B.To provide part-time jobs for veterans.
C.To promote disabled people’s incomes.
D.To offer a cure to special groups.
25.What can we infer about Olivia Diver?
A.She has learned new life skills.
B.She has found her comfort zone.
C.She has gained much confidence.
D.She has changed her attitude to horses.
26.What does paragraph 3 intend to show?
A.GallopNYC’s leader.B.The effect of the therapy.
C.Profit James Wilson has got. D.Ways of guarding people’s anxiety. 27.What does Wilson think of the program according to the last paragraph?
A.It is well received. B.It is highly profitable.
C.It needs to be more creative. D.It takes ages to see the results.

There’s a child-like joy that comes with ordering something online — whether it be clothes or kitchen stuffs. We sit anxiously refreshing the Postal Service or Express pages to see when our items will arrive, and we become overly excited, hopeful and anxious.
According to Owen O’Kane, a psychologist and writer, even the smallest positive future events can motivate us when we’re feeling down — especially during the pandemic, which has been filled with unexpected disappointments. Waiting for a parcel may not just represent an imagined positive future where you can control your needs for a book or toaster or shirt, making life feel more manageable, but can also serve as a temporary distraction from the boring life because it gives you something new to wake up to and get excited about.
However, people went into a frenzy when the Postal Service announced that its mail delivery would become permanently slower. And then, many became worried about their items arriving on time, appearing broken, or simply not living up to expectations. A delayed package may seem insignificant to some. But for others, getting your hopes up only for them to be depressed is anxiety and angering. O’Kane says these reactions are natural, but telling about more deep-rooted internal issues in our lives that go beyond the delayed package. It’s really symbolic about something bigger, psychologically, about the need to control and needing everything to be perfect.
It’s important to practice self-care and treat yourself with occasional gifts. However, experts caution comfort shopping is only a temporary fix, which only helped you escape problems temporarily. “Shopping for and receiving an item is stimulating on some level, and also the most passive way to live,” O’Kane adds. 28.Why do we look forward to receiving packages based on the first two paragraphs? A.It makes life easy to manage. B.It gives us something positive to expect. C.It distracts us from a better life. D.It helps us avoid unexpected disappointments.
29.We can infer from the third paragraph that delayed package may cause some people to ________.
A.cancel their orders. B.stand still to call for their parcels. C.get into a state of craziness. D.run into a postal service company. 30.What is O’Kane’s attitude toward people’s reactions to the delayed package? A.Concerned. B.Indifferent. C.Optimistic D.Negative 31.What exactly does the writer want to say in the last paragraph?
A.Find hope in your comfort shopping.
B.Never order and track something online.
C.Go shopping for and receiving items occasionally.
D.Live actively and take actions to solve problems for good.

Solar farms offer one way to meet the world’s decarbonization targets, but they could also be used to deal with another of the planet’s big problems: loss of biodiversity. The approach is starting to take off. Residents of Barnsdale, for example, will soon play host to a new solar farm lined with grass field of wildflowers and native grasses, which Banks Group, the developer, says will promote pollinating insects.
The idea comes from the combination of two long-term trends: declining numbers of pollinating insects and the growing amount of land distributed to solar farms. According to the Center for Biological Diversity in Arizona, more than 40 percent of insect po llinators globally are listed as “highly threatened”—an issue that could seriously threaten food security. Meanwhile, solar-energy competence has been increasing. Matthew O’Neal, a scientist at Iowa State University, would like to see
more solar developers seize this opportunity.
The benefits of such projects don’t stop at the insects. Research from Yale’s Center for Business and the Environment indicates that pollinator-friendly solar farms can raise crop output on nearby farmland, increase the recharging of groundwater and reduce soil erosion. In 2018, a US Department of Energy study found that if all existing and planned solar facilities near soybean and cranberry crops included pollinator home and increased output by just one percent, annual crop values could rise by US $1.75 million, US $4 million and US $233,000, respectively.
“Farmers could identify unprofitable areas, such as poor, highly erodible lands, as candidates for a pollinator-friendly solar farm. There’s the potential to increase their net in come with pollinator motivation projects,” says O’Neal.
With enough forward thinking, these studies show, clean energy can provide new environmental opportunities. “We’re at a turning point with energy production and we’re seeing more opportunities to provide extra benefits that wouldn’t have been considered with older methods of energy generation,” says O’Neal. “You never heard of a coal mine planning pollinator conservation.”
32.What can be an additional function of solar farms according to paragraph 1? A.Adding the amount of farmland. B.Addressing the decline of biodiversity. C.Improving the solar-energy competence. D.Increasing the amount of profitable areas.
33.What does O’Neal probably advise farmers to do?
A.Reduce the size of their farms.
B.Live away from pollinator-friendly solar farms.
C.Grow their crops near areas rich in groundwater.
D.Make full use of soil erosion areas to make extra profits.
34.What is O’Neal’s attitude towards the solar farm?
A.Supportive. B.Conservative. C.Skeptical. D.Uncertain. 35.What is the best title for the text?
A.Solar Power Is Starting to Take Off
B.Solar Energy Will Be in Urgent Need
C.Solar Farms Can Deal with the Loss of Biodiversity
D.Solar Farms Need to Expand the Amount of Farmland

第二节读后续写(共1小题,满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

My husband and I enjoy seeing life through the eyes of our children. It’s amazing to watch as they discover their world.
While we were outdoors last summer enjoying the sunshine, our oldest daughter, Kaytlin, called me to the doorway. Beneath the steps was a baby red squirrel.
We watched it from a distance, not wanting to disturb it or scare off its mother. But after a long wait—and looking all around our house for signs of a nest or a mother—we realized the tiny squirrel was lost.
Shaking terribly, he was weak, thin, and hungry. We tried to find an expert to help, but the Inland Fisheries and Wildlife website showed that there were no wildlife experts in our area. After some quick research, we concluded that the best way to give the squirrel a fighting chance was to care for him ourselves. So a trip to the local store for milk and supplies was in order. More research taught us how much to feed him, how to estimate his age, how and when to wean (断奶) him, and that we should let him go as soon as he could survive on his own.
Our daughters and I took turns in feeding “Squirt.” Kaytlin took on the most responsibility. She taught him to eat from a bottle, and she woke in the night for his feeds.
To our relief, Squirt soon became healthy and strong. Within a few weeks he became more active. He would chatter (吱吱叫) for his next meal, playfully go around the girls, and lie down on them for sleep. It wasn’t long before he was weaned onto solid food and reintroduced to the wild.
His first few visits to the great outdoors were funny. Just like a child, he would play in the grass some and then run back to Kaytlin for safety. Soon she had him climbing trees and finding nest material.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

One day in the trees, Squirt met up with a family of gray squirrels.
