阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项

Last summer, Katie Steller pulled off the freeway on her way to work inMinneapolis. She stopped at a traffic light, where a man was sitting with a sign asking for help. She rolled down her window and shouted. “Hey. I’m driving around giving free haircuts. Do you want one right now?” The man laughed, then paused. “Actually,” he said, “I was really hoping to get a haircut.” Steller pulled out a red chair from her car and helped the man cut his hair immediately. After the work was done, the man looked in a mirror. “I look good!” he said.
Up to now, Steller has given 30 or so such haircuts around the city to people with little influence, and she is strongly aware of the power of her cleanup job.
As a teen, she suffered from a severe disease, causing her hair to get thinned, so her mother arranged for Steller’s first professional haircut. “To sit down and have somebody look at me and talk to me like a person and not just an illness, it helped me feel cared about and less alone,” she says. After that, Steller knew she wanted to have her own barbershop so she could help people feel the way she’d felt that day. Not long after finishing cosmetology (美容术) school in 2009, she began what she now calls her Red Chair Project, reaching out to people on the streets. Her aim was that by doing some kind acts, others would be inspired to spread their own.
“Part of what broke my heart was just how lonely peoplelooked,” she said. “I thought maybe I’d go around and ask if people want free haircuts. I can’t fix their problems, but maybe I can help them feel less alone for a moment.”
It all began with a belief in simple acts of kindness, such as a free haircut. “The way you show up in the world matters,” said Steller. “You have no idea what people are going to do with the kindness that you give them.”

Why doesHaitiso tend to have fatal earthquakes? Earthquakes have been causing huge damage inHaitisince at least the 18th century. The capital city has been destroyed twice in 19 years. The 21st century has beenno more kind.
The Earth’s outer shell is made tip of tectonic plates (构造板块) that move.Haitisits near the crossing of two tectonic plaits that make up the Earth’s outer shell. Earthquakes can occur when those plates move against each other and create friction (摩擦力).
Haitiis also overpopulated. Plus, many of its buildings are designed to resist hurricanes but not earthquakes. Those buildings can survive strong winds bat are easy to fail down when the ground shrikes. Poor building practices can also play arole.
“I think it’s important to recognize that there’s no such thing as a natural disaster,” said Wendy Bohon, a geologist. “What you have is a natural disaster that comes with a weak architecture system. We do know that earthquakes like this can cause huge damage because ofthefault,” said Wendy. “And it’s quite a significant risk in places that don’t have the construction practices to resist the shaking.”
Construction of more earthquake-resistant buildings remains a challenge inHaiti, which is the poorest nation in theWestern Hemisphere. “While there have been some success stories of Haitians building more earthquake-resistant structures, the country has lacked a centralized effort to do so,” said Mark Schuller, a professor of anthropology and nonprofit and NGO studies atNorthernIllinoisUniversity.Haiti’s government has become increasingly weak, while non-governmental organizations only focus on their own projects.
“There is technical knowledge inHaiti, There are trained architects. There are cityplanners. That’s not the problem,” Schuller said. “The problem is a lack of funding for coordination (协调), and lack of political will from donors to organizations providing aid.”
4. Which factor causing the huge damage is highlighted?
A. Its overpopulation.
B. Its weak government.
C. Its geographical location.
D. Its weak architecture system.
5. What does the underlined part “the fault” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A Lacking political will to provide aid.
B. Lacking hurricane-resistant; buildings.
C. Lacking earthquake-resistant buildings.
D. Sitting on the crossing of two tectonic plates.
6. What’s Schuller’s attitude towardsHaiti’s government?
A Supportive. B. Critical.
C. Indifferent.
D. Interested.
7. Which of the following can be a problem according tothe last paragraph?
A. Fund and will.
B. Skilled architects.
C. Urban designers.
D. Technology and money.

When you walk with a backpack, do you know how the things inside move from side to side? Now scientists havefigured out how to tap into that movement to produce electricity.
Picture a pendulum (摆锤) fixed to a backpack frame and stabilized with springs on either side. The pack’s weight is attached to the pendulum, so the pendulum swings side to side as you walk. Then a machine is driven by that swinging movement, and spits out electrical current to charge a battery.
Volunteers carried the pack while walking on a running machine and wore masks to measure the flow of O2and CO2. Walking with the slightly swinging 20-pound load, the device (设备) did not significantly affect the volunteers’ metabolic (新陈代谢的) rate compared to when they carried the same weight fixed in place. In fact, the energy-harvesting pack reduced the forces of acceleration they’d feel in a regular pack, which might mean greater comfort for a long hike. And the device did produce a steady trickle (涓流) of electricity. If you up the load to 45 pounds, the swing of the pack could fully charge a smart phone only after 12 hours. The details are in the journal Royal Society Open Science.
The device produces electricity from human movement and has been identified as a workable solution to providing a renewable energy source for portable electronic devices. It is particularly useful for those who work in remote areas, as these people often carry a lot of weight in a backpack for their exploration.
But here’s a realconundrum: the energy-harvesting device currently weighs five pounds. The researchers say that’s about four pounds too many to be a smart alternative to batteries. So they hope that more research lets them lighten the load, to ensure the pack charges you up without weighing you down.
8. What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A. How the device works.
B. What the device looks like.
C. Who the device is designed for.
D. Why scientists designed the device.
9. Which of the following describes the device?
A. It greatly affected the volunteers metabolic rate.
B. It harvested energy as the volunteers walk.
C. It failed to produce steady electricity.
D. It was useless for a long walk.
10. What does the underlined word “conundrum” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Problem.
B. Method.
C. Bond.
D. Decision.
11. What will the researchers try to do next?
A. Increase the charging speed of their device.
B. Find smarter alternatives to batteries.
C. Reduce the weight of their device.
D. Put their device on the market.
D
The COVID-19 vaccination(接种疫苗)rate in the US has fallen to newlows in recent weeks, threatening President Joe Biden’s goal of having 70 percent of American adults with at least one shot by July 4.
With just less than one month from July 4, the current vaccination rate will put the US at somewhere between 67 percent and 68 percent of the adult population with at least one dose(剂量)by Independence Day. To reach 70 percent by July 4, around 1.6 percent of the population needs to get their first dose per week from now until July 4.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC)reported last week that 63 percent of adults hadreceived their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. That was up slightly from 62 percent from the report a week before. The additional 1 percent of adults completing their first dose is the lowest since the CDC started tracking the vaccination rate in mid-February.
On average, fewer than 1 million shots are given out per day, a decline of more than two-thirds from the peak of 3.4 million in April, The Washington Post reported. In South Carolina, about 71,000 residents got a shot in the week leading up to June 3, compared to a high of nearly 300,000 in one week in early April, according to data from the CDC.
The slowdown is moreprominentacross the South and Midwest. Twelve states have seen vaccinations fall to
15 daily shots per 10,000 residents. Less than a quarter of black Americans had received their first COVID-19 shot as of June 7.
James Hildreth, CEO of Meharry Medical College, told Politico, “We need to make a stronger effort to bring the vaccine to the communities, rather than relying on the communities to come to vaccination centers.”
The sharp decline in vaccination began in mid-April when federal officials temporarily stopped the use of the Johnson&Johnson vaccine while they investigated rare blood-clotting(凝血)reactions.
The “low-hanging fruit—thosepeople who ly want to get vaccinated without you telling them anything” have already been vaccinated, which has led to the slowdown, Dr Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said on a White House-organized call with community leaders last week, according to the Post.
12. What can we learn from the text?
A. Dr Anthony Fauci is in charge of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
B. In South Carolina, about 300,000 residents got a shot in the week leading up to June 3
C. In mid-April federal officials temporarily suspended the Johnson&Johnson vaccine.
D. Less than one fourth of Americans had received their first COVID-19 shot by June 7.
13. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “prominent” in Para. 5?
A. Meaningful.
B. Obvious.
C. Inspiring.
D. Complex.
14. How can America increase the COVID-19 vaccination rate according to James Hildreth?
A. By giving the vaccine shot at the communities.
B. By offering the vaccine to the public for free.
C. By frequently informing the public of the vaccine.
D. By urging the communities to come to vaccination centers.
15. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Biden wishes to have 70% of adults with one shot by July 4
B. CDC has been trackingthe vaccination rate since mid-February
C. Some Americans need to get vaccinated without telling them to
D. Biden’s July 4th vaccine goal may be missed

Building a Lasting Social Relationship
We all know that friends are special people who we share our lives with, and who share their lives with us in return.___16___
According to research recently published in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, the key is to use “we-talk”.
Led byUniversityofCaliforniapsychologist Megan Robins and her colleagues, the researchers reviewed and analyzed 30 different studies involving over 5,000 participants.___17___
The word “we” moves people from an individual position into a partnership, which makes us more interdependent. “____18____Word use is a window into what people are thinking and feeling without asking them,” Robbins told Science Daily.
___19___The primary point is that interdependence may bring about supportive and relationship-centered behaviors and positive perceptions of the partner — especially important in times of stress and disagreement Contrary to “we-talk”, there is “I-talk”, which refers to the frequent use of the first-person singular pronouns, such as “I”, “me” and “mine”, when writing or speaking. Earlier this year, researcher analyzed a set of data that came from 47,000 people inGermanyand theUS.____20____As you can see from the two studies, too much “I-talk” can make you feel depressed. But “we-talk” can encourage you to become more positive and create a chain effect of healthy interdependence with others.
So next time you are talking to a friend, try using more “we-talk”. You may find yourself feeling more positive — and the effect it will have on your friend will be positive as well.
A. Pronouns offer an insight into whether people see themselves as individuals or as part of a whole.
B. If you are speaking in a person context, you’re speaking about something that’s of relevance to you.
C. Their research also found that “we-talk” is helpful for resolving conflicts.
D. Self-centered people are found to be indifferent to many things in society and other people because all their concentration is only on themselves and their needs.
E. This analysis of “we-talk” suggested that the frequent use of “we” and “us” is linked to happier and healthier relationships.
F. They found that too much “I-talk” was an accurate linguistic marker for the likelihood that someone is feeling stressed or experiencing negative emotions.
G. But seeking friends and keeping the friendship going are never easy.
