Reading body language is important, but if you don’t know how to interpret what you see, you may be jumping to the wrong conclusions.
Take the smile for example. Everyone knows that a smile signals happiness, right? Not so fast. Read these 4 myths and find out the truth about some common body language signals.
1. Myth: People smile because they are happy. Not always true. People smile for many reasons, including from nervousness or fear. To tell if someone is happy when they smile, look at their whole face. If their face lights up and their eyes crinkle (起皱) at the corners, this is a true, happy smile. If just the corners of their mouth turn up, they may be smiling for other reasons.
2. Myth: High powered people use touch to show dominance. The myth is that people in high powered positions, often men, use touch to show dominance over others. In fact, research shows that in most cases it’s people in lower status positions, and often women, who use touch.
3. Myth: You can’t trust fast talkers. Many people associate fast talkers with sales people who are trying to sell you something. However, the research shows the opposite. People who pause frequently or for too long, or who repeat themselves, may actually be the ones deceiving others, because they are apprehensive about being caught in a lie.
4. Myth: When people are angry, their voices rise. The truth is that a rising voice can signal many emotions, from anger to nervousness, fear, or excitement. When someone’s voice rises in pitch (音调), consider the context, and the personality of the communicator. If you do n’t really understand the person’s communication patterns, you are unlikely to interpret their signals correctly, and know if the behavior is routine or unusual.

A. introduce some common body language signals
B. compare and contrast different signals of body language
C. correct some misunderstandings of body language signals

D. When in Rome, do as Romans do.
(B)
My mother always used to say, “If you don’t want to start arguments, don’t talk about money or politics, or play bridge (桥牌).” I’m afraid I am guilty of the first occasionally and the second regularly, but I have never done the third. Neither has my husband, Rod (except once as a teenager), nor either of our two sons. We do play cards, but have never attempted anything more complicated than racing demon and hearts (一种纸牌游戏). Rod isn’t really into games, and tends not to pay full attention when the rules are explained. As we discuss the fact that bridge is played in pairs, both boys state quickly, “I’m not partnering Dad. You married him,” they tell me, “you get him.” OK, I think, with a bit of luck this little exchange will ensure that Rod does make an effort with this game. Sure enough, he says, “You wait—I might surprise you.”
My only concern now is that if I partner Rod, the boys must partner each other. They are more than capable of arguing without the aid of a card game, so the chance of a conflagration (争论) is well above zero.
We seat ourselves at the kitchen table with John Pain, our bridge teacher for the evening. “Good,” he says, “I thought you might place yourselves differently.” We look blank; place ourselves? All we’ve done is sit down. “You partner the person opposite you,” he says. Light dawns (天亮;开始). That puts me with Luke, 14, and Rod with Daniel, 17. “It isn’t a good idea for husbands and wives to play together,” John continues, admitting that although his wife is also a bridge teacher, they never chose to partner each other. Luke reminds us that in one of PG Wodehouse’s Jeeves stories, three couples are driven apart by bridge. The boys seem to think their parents’ relationship is worth preserving and no one objects to the pairings.
48. According to the first paragraph, _______.
A. the writer never talks about politics
B. Rod has a gift for card games
C. neither kids wishes to partner Dad
D. no one in the family has ever played bridge
49. The writer quotes what her mother said to _______.
A. show her love and respect for her
B. prove that bridge is a difficult game
C. explain that playing bridges easily leads to quarrel
D. suggest that she doesn’t agree to her opinion
50. How does the writer feel when she knows she will partner her husband?
A. Surprised.
B. Disappointed.
C. Lucky.
D. Upset.
51. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. The kids agree to partner each other in the end.
B. The bridge teacher suggests that the writer not partner her husband.
C. The bridge teacher has never played bridge with his wife.
D. The family have to re-partner according to the bridge rules.
52. What is the passage mainly about?
A. How the kids get into fight over bridge.
B. Why husbands and wives can’t be partners in bridge.
C. Why people tend to get into quarrel over bridge.
D. How the family prepare to learn to play bridge.
Section C
Directions: Read the text and choose the most suitable heading from the list A –F for each paragraph of the text. There is one extra heading which you do not need.
53.
Ecotowns (生态城市) will be entirely new settlements of between 5,000 and 15,000 low-carbon homes, designed to a strict set of environmental standard. Most important, the amount of energy taken from the electricity supply to run the town will be less than or equal to the amount put back through renewable power. E ach new place should have a “separate and distinct” identity with good links to surrounding towns and cities for jobs, transport and services.
54.
The government has announced 15 potential locations across England. The shortlist includes former Ministry of Defence land, disused airfields and former pits and industrial sites. Ministers have promised that no new homes will be built on protected green belt land.
55.
No definite plans have been drawn up yet but expect to see some interesting new designs. Celebrated architect Sir Terry Farrell has expressed an interest in getting involved, as has designer Terence Conran. Homes will be south-facing to capture the heat from the sun. There will also be plenty of green spaces, plenty of cycle lanes and fewer roads for cars.
56.
Anyone. The affordable homes will attract those priced out of the property market, while an emphasis on larger houses will be popular with families with children. The new towns will also appeal to people from all walks of life keen to live a greener lifestyle, but who at present don’t have the opportunity to do so.
57.
Housing and the environment are two key issues for Gordon Brown. By proposing new ecotowns he can kill two birds with one stone. He has set a target of building 3m new homes by 2020, so these new towns will go a small way towards fulfilling this ambitious aim. The health secretary, Alan Johnson, holds that ecotowns could help to keep the inhabitants fit. He wants to make them healthy ecotowns by designing in safe walking routes to schools and increasing the number of cycle lanes.
