There exists a name which may not register with the majority of people in China, but it should
---the father of Chinese Pinyin, Zhou Youguang.
Like many famous people of his age, Zhou experienced a lot. Yet he adopted a positive attitude to whatever happened in his life and set a perfect example telling us the pursuit of knowledge goes beyond age. He put forward the plan for the phonetic(语音的) pinyin for Chinese characters in the 1950s and continued his language studies until he was 85 years old in 1990; then he started to show concern for national and international affairs. Even after reaching the age of 100, he published at least five books and authored dozens of long articles, each of which had great influence.
What makes his books and articles special is his courage to speak his mind whenever he was not satisfied with the reality. He blamed the some so-called “masters” of traditional Chinese culture, argued that the truth should be sought through debate, and insisted that studying traditional Chinese culture should not lead to inflexible following of the dead rules of the past. He was a warrior and he was proud of what he did, saying “I am old enough to tell the truth”.
That’s what makes him so unique and special. He had his own principles and he stuck to them. Without blindly following the trends of the times, he was critical for he wanted things to be better. We respect him, not only because of his knowledge and wisdom, but also because of his courage and sense of justice.
28. Why should we all remember Zhou Youguang?
A. Because he wrote many books and articles.
B. Because he created the Chinese Pinyin system.
C. Because he went through many ups and downs.
D. Because he discovered truth through discussion.
29. Which of the following is true about Zhou?
A. He kept on learning throughout his life.
B. He spoke his mind after he got married.
C. He gave up language studies upon his graduation.
D. He majored in international affairs as a young man.
30. What is Zhou’s attitude towards studying traditional Chinese culture?
A. Frank and modest
B. Critical and flexible
C. Thoughtful and creative
D. Independent and considerate
31. What can we learn about Zhou from the text?
A. He is a man who sticks to traditions.
B. He is a man who follows the set rules.
C. He is a man who has knowledge and courage.
D. He is a man who gains satisfaction from debating.
D
Emotional intelligence is the quality that enables us to cope with patience and imagination---the many problems that we face in our relationship with ourselves and with other people. The term “emotional intelligence” may sound strange, for we’re used to referring to intelligence just as a general quality.
Every sort of intelligence shows an ability to address a set of challenges: mathematical, linguistic(语言的), technical and commercial. When we say that someone is clever, but add that they’ve made a mess of their personal lives; or that they have gained a fortune but are restless and sad, or that they are powerful but intolerant and unimaginative, we are pointing to a disadvantage in what deserves to be called “emotional intelligence”.
Emotional intelligence isn’t a talent we are born with. It’s always the result of edu cation, specifically, education in how to understand ourselves, where our emotions arise, how our childhoods influence us, and in how we might best lead our fears and our wishes. In the ideal society, it would be routine to be taught emotional intelligence from the youngest age, before we’d have the opportunity to make too many mistakes. We are now evolved monkeys with nuclear weapons. It appears that the fate of civilization now depends on our ability to master the mechanisms(运行机制) of emotional education b efore it’s too late.
Our technical intelligence is great of course. It’s led us to conquer this planet. But a wiser future for the human race must depend on an ability to master and then teach one another the basics of emotional intelligence---while there is still time.
32. According to the passage, what is emotional intelligence?
A. The ability to conquer the world.
B. The ability to improve our general quality.
C. The ability to deal with a series of challenges.
D. The ability to settle problems with ourselves and others.
33. Why do we add negative comments to words of praise?
A. To encourage people to gain a fortune.
B. To draw people’s attention to their sadness.
C. To remind people of their linguistic problems.
D. To tell people they are short on emotional intelligence.
34. What can be concluded from the passage?
A. Emotional intelligence is supposed to be taught early in our life.
B. Emotional intelligence is beneficial to our technical intelligence.
C. Emotional intelligence is the natural ability we possess.
D. Emotional intelligence is evolved from monkeys.
35. For what purpose did the author write this passage?
A. To stress the feature of emotional intelligence.
B. To discuss the problems of emotional intelligence.
C. To appeal for the education of emotional intelligence.
D. To introduce the evolution of emotional intelligence.

How to Overcome Social Anxiety
If you suffer from social anxiety, you will fear certain situations. In whatever situation your fear turns up, you will probably experience sweating, feeling your heart race or other symptoms of anxiety.
36 No matter what your symptoms are, there are things you can do to deal with social anxiety.
1.Relaxing muscles.
37 It is impossible to feel both relaxed and anxious. For deep muscle relaxation, you will relax the major muscle groups of your body, beginning with your feet and working your way towards your head and face.
2.Breathing slowly.
Controlling your breathing when you are anxious is another good way to deal with your emotions. When you are anxious, your breath becomes faster and shallower. 38 If you learn to breathe more slowly and regularly through your nose, you will calm down.
3.Controlling your thoughts.
Faulty thinking is another feature of social anxiety. 39 So it is important to judge whether those thoughts are true. People with social anxiety always overestimate how badly others think of them. Keep in mind that your thoughts are only guesses about what others will think or what you will do.
4. 40
Most people with social anxiety want to hide or run away from whatever they are afraid of. But by facing your anxiety instead, you will find that is usually something you can put up with. When using this method, focus on what is going on around you instead of what is going through your mind, and that should help you get out of those anxious thoughts.
Have you found any of the desc ribed methods useful? If you have other ways to cope with anxiety, don’t hesitate to share with us.

One Sunday morning, I was dreaming of being asked to the office by the boss when I was woken up by a phone call. It was from a taxi driver. He told me he had my friend’s cell phone. My friend, Mike, had left it in the taxi the night before. The driver called me according to the call records.
It was a raining morning. For taxi drivers in this big city it was a big time. I told him there was a taxi centre not far away from my home. He could take it there. Then I quickly jumped out of bed and got dressed. When I walked there in half an hour, the driver had gone away. He didn’t leave anything except for the cell phone.
I was very happy for my friend. He moved to this city a few days ago, so I didn’t get time to visit him and therefore didn’t know where he was living. I emailed my friend telling him I had his phone. My friend was very excited to get back his cell phone. He said he would write it on his blog to search for the warm-hearted driver.

第二节:作文
To enrich the after class activities on campus, a forum was staged by the Student Union last Thursday in the assembly room, at which some teachers and students were invited to share their opinions on the impact the grand entertainment program Everlasting Classics hosted by CCTV has had on carrying forward traditional Chinese cultures.
Delightedly, with all the participants encouraged to speak their mind freely, the forum was a great success. Convincingly and honestly, the attendees presented the views, most of which struck a chord with the others. Regarding the significance and impact of the program, it is agreeably acknowledged that the program has created an effective approach to spreading traditional Chinese cultures. And it is also suggested that attention should be attached to the diversity of such programs, like composition contests or speeches related to traditional cultures.
In brief, with the gained experience of holding this successful forum, the Student Union has scheduled to stage more activities like this, which can be of great benefit to a better understanding of traditional cultures.
