One minute, Peggy Lewis and her husband were watching the trees blow in the wind outside their home in Eureka, Kansas. Next, they were surrounded by broken glass from the houseˈs windows. The roof tore off. The walls fell down. After the 152-mph tornado (龙卷风) had passed, it took a team of neighbors to pull the couple out from the ruins and take them to the hospital.
When the couple returned to their home three days after that awful night, Lewis wanted one thing —her family Bible. Lewis bought the Bible 35 years ago, at the start of her marriage. Sheˈd used it to hold her familyˈs old photos, newspaper obituaries (讣告) of loved ones, a handkerchief from her great-grandmother and so on.
The Bible wasnˈt where sheˈd last seen it, on top of an old dresser in her bedroom. Then two volunteers showed up to help the couple dig out. After an hour of searching, one volunteer found
the Bible while cleaning through the little stones. It had flown approximately ten feet from that unlucky dresser. Surprisingly, while many books inside the house had been destroyed beyond recognition, the Bible was still intact (完好的), even though it had sat in the rain for days. A few of the Bi bleˈs treasures did go missing. But ever so slowly, they began reappearing in Lewisˈs life. Days after the Bible was found, volunteers discovered one of the newspaper obituaries outside the house. Two weeks later, a neighbor found another piece of newspaper sticking to her fence. "It was such a shock," said Lewis.
Lewis and her family are living at a friendˈs house until they get back on their feet. But the Bible already has its well-deserved place of honor, on Lewisˈs borrowed dresser. She knows that while every good book tells stories of extremely bad weather and unlikely survival, this one actually lived it.
24.Why was the Bible so valuable to Lewis?
A. Itˈs a book published 35 years ago.
B. Itˈs a witness of her familyˈs history.
C. Itˈs the wedding gi ft from her husband.
D. Itˈs the first thing she bought for her family.
25.How were the Bible and its treasures found?
A. Volunteers found them outside the house.
B. Lewis found them when cleaning up the ruins.
C. They were found when floating near the old dresser.
D. Lewisˈ neighbor and some volunteers discovered them.
26.What does the underlined sentence "this one actually lived it" in the last paragraph mean?
A. This book was of high quality.
B. This book survived the tornado.
C. This book was worthy of being read.
D. This book told the stories about tornado.
27.In which part of a magazine can you find the article?
A. History and art.
B. Financial observation.
C. Everyday wonders.
D. Science and technology.

"Keep your eyes open. This is where the Ewoks (伊沃克人) live." The one-hour drive outside of San Francisco, covered in clouds along windy roads, has inspired my husband to say this sentence at least a dozen times.
We finally arrive at Muir Woods National Park. I explain the strange green stuff on trunks of trees as we pass by moss (苔藓), something my 5-year-old son Cole has never seen in the desert where we live.
"Mom, are Ewoks real? I think they maybe aren't real." There's a question in Cole's voice, like he's trying on this idea.
We've been down the road of pretending versus reality before, what with all the talk of superheroes and such around our house. "I think you are right. Ewoks are just in the movies. But it would be cool if they were real, right?"
Cole's silent for a while, thinking. "I just saw an Ewok's ear back there!" Cole spotted an additional Ewok arm and one full body of the tiny hairy creatures. It does indeed look like we are in the Ewok forest of Star Wars.
Cole's imagination is more than I can understand. What do plants eat? Which is the best planet? Which rocks float? He loves life. He loves his inner world and outer existence equally.
I hear a lot of worry from parents about media sucking the souls from our children, taking away their time for creative play. For us, this hasn't been the case. Cole and his brother are quite knowledgeable in the realities of life when it comes to Angry Birds, Curious George, and the adventures of Indiana Jones. These characters, and others of their own invention, live in my home like visitors, joining us on walks and outings. I appreciate them, though not all the time, for the company they give my sons and their busy minds.
I think of media characters as an add-on to already busy minds, and they become part of the parenting team. They teach loyalty, curiosity...—lessons I'm trying to convey, but in a much cooler way than I can.
28.Where are the family heading for?
A. The cinema.
B. A park.
C. San Francisco.
D. A desert.
29.What can we know about Cole from the passage?
A. He is proud of himself.
B. He is full of curiosity.
C. He is courageous.
D. He is considerate.
30.What do many parents think of their children playing via media?
A. It wastes children's time.
B. It can make their children relaxed.
C. It can engage their children in learning actively.
D. It can accompany their children in their absence.
31.What's most likely to be the author's attitude to the media characters in parenting children?
A. Indifferent.
B. Critical.
C. Supportive.
D. Disapproving.
D
In the 1970s, chemist James Lovelock and microbiologist Lynn Margulis developed the Gaia hypothesis (盖亚假说): all organic (有机的) and inorganic components (成分) on the planet are part of one self-regulating system, working to maintain life on earth. Scientists agree that we need take significant action to control emissions (排放). But where scientists and popular movements have thus far failed to convince the world to act, it seems that Mother Earth may have succeeded, with the never-before-seen COVID-19.
COVID-19 is estimated to have reduced carbon dioxide emission in China by a quarter. It caused factories to shut down, and slowed construction activities. Recent analysis shows a 70 percent drop in flights in February compared with January. And even getting into a car and going to a restaurant, shopping mall, or concert poses a risk of infection, which means that many people are choosing to stay at home and are consuming less, resulting in a significant reduction of their carbon footprints.
Of course, China and the rest of the world will hope to restart normal production and consumption as soon as the virus is under control. However, some positive measures have already been taken as a result of COVID-19. As the virus is thought to originate from wildlife, Chinese authorities are revising laws and regulations regarding the country's massive wildlife trade in order to prevent future epidemics (流行病)—a win for biodiversity.
The deaths of thousands of people worldwide should also serve as a lasting reminder of the fragility of life. We humans frequently ignore or repress uncomfortable thoughts of death and extinction. We would rather get on with our lives as usual, thinking everything will somehow work out in the end. Only in the face of suffering and death are we forced to view the bigger, longer-term perspective—and this is what is needed in order to react appropriately to climate change. COVID-19 has sent alarm bells ringing throughout the world.
32.What does the author mention the Gaia hypothesis for?
A. To tell the main idea of the text.
B. To introduce the topic for discussion.
C. To show the need to protect the planet.
D. To stress the importance of self-regulating system.
33.What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A. The unexpected benefit of COVID-19.
B. The economic influence of COVID-19.
C. The preventive measures for COVID-19.
D. The possible causes of COVID-19.
34.What does the underlined word "repress" in the last paragraph refer to?
A. Control.
B. Hold.
C. Vary.
D. Test.
35.What does the writer want to tell us in the text?
A. It's urgent to fight the virus.
B. The virus has caused many deaths.
C. Life is fragile in face of disasters.
D. Action is needed for climate change.
第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

选项中有两项为多余选项。

One major reason Americans don't get enough exercise is that they feel they don't have enough time. It can be difficult to squeeze in the 75 minutes of aerobic (有氧的) exercise per week that federal guidelines suggest. 36 .
In a new analysis of 14 studies, researchers tracked deaths among more than 232,000 people from the U. S., Denmark, the U. K. and China over at least five years, and compared the findings with people's self-reports about how much they ran. People who said they ran any amount were less likely to die than those who didn't run at all. 37 This was true even for those who didn't jog(慢跑) a great deal of time. The analysis divided people into groups, with 50 minutes or less per week representing the group that ran the least―but still ran. "Regardless of how much you run, you can expect such benefits," says Zeljko Pedisic, one of the authors of the new analysis published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.
The analysis is the latest to illustrate(说明) the benefits of running on the human body. It's what we evolved(进化) to do. 38 But as leisure-time exercise, running keeps us healthy. "One of the best ways to avoid having to see a doctor," Zeljko says, "is to stay physically active."
39 Running is good at guarding against cancer partly because it uses up blood sugar, starving the cancer cells that rely on it for fuel. And it protects you in other ways not necessarily measured in the latest research: by decreasing inflammation (炎症), for example, which is at the root of many diseases, and stimulating the production of a protein that improves brain health.
40 Neither were how often people ran and the pace they kept. As long as you're running, more isn't always better, especially given that the risk of injury increases with repetition.
A. People may no longer hunt wild animals for their next meal.
B. The physical demands of running affect our body in a beneficial way.
C. Some people run to prevent disease, and others run because it makes them feel better.
D. Runners were 27% less likely to die for any reason, compared with nonrunners.
E. But researchers point out, to infer something like that, they need the whole population measured.
F. But new research suggests people may be able to get life-lengthening benefits by running for far less time.
G. The good news is that running more than 50 minutes per week wasn't linked to additional protections against dying.
