1.lonely adj. 孤独的;寂寞的(教材P72)
【辨析】lonely与alone
(1)lonely在句中作表语或定语,强调主观上感到孤独、寂寞,有较浓的感情色彩,指因缺少朋友、同情、友谊等产生的一种悲伤和忧郁的感情。
如:
He has been very lonely since his wife left him.
自从他妻子离开后,他一直很孤独。
(2)lonely在句中作定语时,还可意为“荒凉的;偏僻的”,多用来修饰表示地点的名词。
如:
Little Tom was taken to a lonely island.小汤姆被带到一个孤岛上。
(3)alone用作形容词时,只作表语,不能作定语。
侧重说明独自一人,没有助手或同伴,无感情色彩。
只表示客观的状态。
如:
He doesn't feel lonely when he is alone.他独自一人时并不感到孤独。
(4)alone用作副词时,意为“独自;单独”。
如:
After his wife died,he lived alone.妻子死后,他独自生活。

2.regret v. 懊悔;遗憾(教材P72)
【点拨】regret作动词,意为“懊悔;遗憾”。
常用搭
配为:regret doing sth.(对已经发生的事情感到后悔);regret to do sth.(为要做的事情感到遗憾)。
如:
I regret taking his advice.我后悔采纳了他的意见。
We regret to inform you that your application has not been successful.我们遗憾地通知您,您的申请没有成功。

3.encourage v. 鼓励;激励(教材P72)
【点拨】encourage意为” 鼓励;激励”,常用短语为encourage sb.to do sth.,意为“鼓励某人做某事”。
如:Our English teacher often encourages us to speak English as much as possible in class.我们的英语老师总是鼓励我们在课堂上多说英语。

4.avoid v. 避免;防止(教材P80)

其后可接名词、代词或动名词作宾语。

She braked suddenly and avoided an accident.她紧急刹车,避免了一场车祸。

5.seem v. 看来;似乎(教材P82)
【点拨】seem常用作连系动词,多用于下列结构中:
(1)seem+(to be)+…形容词/名词/介词短语如:
She seems (to be) quite sad.她似乎很伤心。
They seem strangers.他们好像是陌生人。
The twins seem at home.双胞胎好像在家。
(2)seem to do sth.如:
Our teacher seems to know everything.我们老师似乎什么都知道。
(3)It seems + (that) 从句如:
It seems that I have seen him somewhere before.我们好像以前曾在什么地方见过他。
注意:“It seems +(that)从句”可以与“主语+seem +to do sth.”结构互换。
如:
It seemed that our teacher knew that.=Our teacher seemed to know that.我们老师好像知道那件事。

【点拨】该句中if引导的从句作ask的宾语。
主句是一般现在时态,从句可以根据实际情况用任何时态,即“主现从任”。
if意为“是否”,可与whether互换。
如:
H e asks if/whether I will come to his party next weekend.他问我下周是否要参加他的派对。
I don't know if/whether she can work out the problem.我不知道她是否能算出这道题。
注意:下列情况下表示“是否”只能用whether:
(1)与or not连用时,如:
I don't know whether I should tell them the secret or not.我不知道该不该告诉他们这个秘密。
(2)在句首使用时,如:
W hether you come or not will be OK.你来不来都无所谓。
(3)在介词后使用时,如:
I t depends on whether he can solve the problem.那个取决于他是否能解决这个问题。
(4)与动词不定式连用时,如:
I can't decide whether to believe him or not.我
无法决定是否要相信他。
(5)在discuss,doubt后使用时,如:
T hey are discussing whether they should put off the school trip.他们在讨论是否应该推迟学校郊游。
