A
When I was seven years old, my family made me an ant farm . First, we put clean sand in a thin glass box . Then we waited for the ants to arrive .
After the ants were in the glass farm, they started to make tunnels(地道). I was amazed that each one knew exactly what to do . Each had its own job .
On the fifth day a tragedy(悲剧)happened . I put my face so close to the glass farm that I knocked it over . All the tunnels fell down . Although the ants remained alive after their earthquake, one by one they began to die . I was scared as I watched them give up building their tunnels to carry the bodies to a corner of the farm .
My mother said that the ants were dying of sadness . They simply could not stand that their tunnels were gone .
Although much time has passed, I still think of that ant farm . Mom had hoped it would teach me about the natural world, but it taught me much more .
Over the years, I came to realize the importance of teamwork . Working together, the ants were able to make an amazing world for themselves . I also learned that they should be admired(钦佩)for their hard work .
But there was an even larger lesson that I did not realize until recently: Adversity (逆境)is a natural part of life, and must be accepted . Unlike the ants, we cannot give up when we are sad . We have to realize that if a tunnel is gone, we must build another .
Giving up, I say, is not a good choice .

A good modern newspaper is an extraordinary piece of reading. It is remarkable
first for what it contains: the range of news from local crime to international politics, from sport to business to fashion to science, and the range of comment and special features as well, from editorial page to feature articles and interviews to criticism of books, art, theatre and music.
A newspaper is even more remarkable for the way one reads it: never completely,
never straight through, but always by jumping from here to there, in and out glancing at one piece, reading another article all the way through, reading just a few paragraphs of the next.
A good modern newspaper offers a variety to attract many different readers, but
far more than any one reader is interested in. What brings this variety together in one place is its topicality, its immediate relation to what is happening in your world and your locality now. But immediacy and the speed of production that goes with it also mean that much of what appears in a newspaper has no more than transient value. For all these reasons, no two people really read the same paper: what each person does is to put together out of the pages of that day’s paper, his own selection and sequence, his own newspaper. For all these reasons, reading newspapers efficiently, which means getting what you want from them without missing things you need but without wasting time, demands skill and self –awareness as you modify and apply the techniques of reading.
46.A modern newspaper is remarkable for all the following Except its .
A.wide coverage B.uniform style

Dear Victor:
I am a college student. Nowadays games on the net are very popular with college students. Some of my roommates are very interested in them. They not only play games in their free time, but also keep talking about them at night when lights are off, and they regard games as part of life. I’ve begged(乞求) them to give it up, but they wouldn’t liste n to me. It has become a rather big problem. Should I report it to our teachers or do something else?
Ted,
Dear Ted:
Drop it. Y our roommates, as grown-ups, can do whatever they want with their time so long as it doesn’t break school rules or violate(防碍) o ther people’s interests.
Playing perhaps gives these students relaxation(放松) from hard study. If they play too often, have little time to study, and they will reap what they have sown, but you will not. Reporting to the teachers would only harm your good name in your dormitory(宿舍). However you have rights to ask your roommates to be quiet when you need sleep. On my first day in a college classroom, I felt like an overgrown child returning to civilization, after having been lost in the forest for thirty years. There I sat, old enough to be a father to most of the students in the room, yet insecure enough to be their baby brother. We were crowded elbow to elbow, listening to a professor who looked even younger than the students did. I felt uncomfortable and out of place as the professor carefully explained what she expected us to learn.
As I listened, I could n’t help but think of my own oldest daughter who was now beginning her freshman year in college, just like me. I recalled (回忆) how hard I had tried to instill (逐步培养) self-confidence in her and my other children. So why did I suddenly feel like a scared child myself? When I walked out of that classroom, I had serious doubts about my ability to make it through college. Not until late that night
did my thinking change. It was a long-distance telephone call from my daughter that did the trick. She was certain t hat she’d never succeed at college. How familiar her worries sounded!
In my confident parental voice, I said, ―Doing your best is all the world asks.‖ The next day in class, those words still echoed in my head. When the professor posed (提出) a question for the class, nobody, including me, dared answer. When I looked around at the fear and uncertainty on the young faces in that room, I knew exactly what I had to do: my best. That’s all the world asks. So I raised my hand, and the professor called on me. I spoke.

Every October for more than thirty years, the city of Albuquerque, New Mexico welcomes visitors to a colorful celebration. The visitors spend much of their time looking up at the sky. That is because they are attending the Albuquerque International Balloon Festival. More than seven hundred colorful hot-air balloons fill the sky. This year, there is also a new ballooning museum.
The Anderson-Abruzzo Albuquerque balloon Museum opened on October 1st. It celebrates the art and science of ballooning. The name honors two men from Albuquerque who were important in the history of balloon flight. They are Ben Abruzzo and Maxie Anderson. Along with Larry Newman, they completed the first non-stop crossing of the Atlantic Ocean by gas balloons in 1978.
The museum aims to answer questions many people ask about balloons and those who fly them: How are balloons built? How do they get up into the air? Why do people fly them at all? The museum also shows how balloons have been used for fun, for war and for scientific purposes. One exciting part of the museum is called ―the New Mexico Adventure‖.
