Each new school year bri ngs fresh reminders of what educators call the summer learning gap. Some call it the summer learning setback(退步). Simply speaking, it means the longer kids are out of school, the more they forget. The only thing they might gain is weight.
Most American schools follow a traditional nine-month calendar. Students get winter and spring breaks and about ten weeks of summer vacation. Some schools follow a year-round calendar. They hold classes for about eight weeks at a time, with a few weeks off in between. The National Association for Year-Round Education says there were fewer than three thousand such schools at last count. They were spread among forty-six of the fifty states.
But many experts point out that the number of class days in a year-round school is generally the same as in a traditional school. Lead researcher Pa ul von Hippel said, “Year-round schools don't really solve the problem of the summer learning setback. They simply spread it out across the year.”
Across the country, research shows that students from poor families fall farther behind over the summer than other students. Experts say this can be prevented. They note that many schools and local governments offer programs that can help.
But calling them “summer school”could be a problem. The director of the summer learning center at Johns Hopkins, Ron Fairchild, said research with groups of different parents in Chicago and Baltimore foun d that almost all strongly disliked the term “summer school”. In American culture, the idea of summer vacation is connected to beliefs about freedom and the joys of childhood. Beginning college is exciting: new ideas to explore, new challenges to meet and many decisions to make.Your future begins here.
However, you will find college life is different from your previous school environment. Many of us can be easily overwhelmed(压垮)by the details of running a well-balanced life. While some of us may have the know-how, I guess there are more of us who can benefit from learning about the experiences of others who have walked the college halls before you.

* Write the word “STUDY” on the walls of our bedroom and bathroom, and maybe it will help to write it on a piece of paper and stick it on the telephone, TV and the kitchen table.Consider this—you are paying thousands of dollars for your courses. You pay every time you have to repeat or replace a course.
* Build your identity. This is the time for you to decide what to do and what not to do.Take as much time as you need to explore new ideas.Do not be afraid of the beyond. This is learning to make good choices.

Good hobbies for children can bring much pleasure to them and their parents. Hobbies are defined as anything a person likes to do in the spare time. Some kids like swimming or playing some types of sports, or they may like quiet hobbies such as reading, art, music, cooking, or computer games.
Good hobbies for kids can be any type of hobby that is beneficial to their overall growth, not to mention the self-esteem and skills they build, which will help them later in life. Good hobbies for kids today are as varied and creative as imagination. For busy working parents finding the right hobbies for their children can be lengthy job. Don’t fear. Here are some simple tips to help in finding good hobbies for kids.
When you are selecting good hobbies for kids, one of the important things to remember is not to____; otherwise they may quit before they really try them. My daughter joined a sport in the 6th grade. I felt it was a good healthy hobby, but I didn’t push her to it too hard. I just let her try it herself, and now it has turned out to be a good thing for her self-esteem and mental ability.
Also some good hobbies for kids are age-appropriate, which can be very good for developing specific areas your child may need help in. For example, some musical instruments are age-specific. Older children who can read would enjoy the guitar, while younger ones will enjoy playing the toy drums while singing.
Finally, the most important is to get to know your kids before helping them to develop good hobbies. Don’t just follow the steps of other parents because every kid is different. Good hobbies for one child may not be good for another.
