Lao She, whose real name was Shu Qingchun and styled himself Sheyu, was a preeminent Chinese writer and playwright of the 20th century. Born on February 3, 1899, in Beijing, he hailed from the Manchu tribe of Zhenghong Qi in the Qing Dynasty, with his ancestral home in Liaoyang, Liaoning Province. He graduated from Beijing Normal School and later became a renowned novelist, author, master of language, and a "People's Artist" in the new era of China.
Lao She's works are renowned for their realistic and satirical portrayals of society, especially those that capture the unique flavor of Beijing. His novels, such as "Camel Xiangzi" and "Four Generations Under One Roof," as well as his plays like "Teahouse" and "Dragon's Whisker Ditch," exhibit a profound understanding of the complex human nature and societal dynamics. His contributions to the development of modern vernacular literature language earned him the title of "Master of Language."
In 1966, during the Cultural Revolution, Lao She faced malicious attacks and persecution. Tragically, he committed suicide by drowning in Beijing's Taiping Lake. However, in 1978, he was posthumously vindicated and his title as a "People's Artist" was restored. Notably, in 1968, Lao She was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature and received the first-place vote, but he was unable to receive the award due to his passing.
Lao She's life was one of perseverance and dedication to his craft. Despite facing adversity and challenges, he remained committed to his writing and continued to produce works that resonated deeply with readers. His legacy as a writer and thinker continues to inspire and influence generations of Chinese and beyond.。
