JD TenNapel, 15, became a lifesaver during a wildfire in Cedaredge, Colorado, which burned 60 acres.
“I just got done mowing (割草) and I looked up and saw black smoke and flames come up probably a quarter mile from our house. I knew there were just dozens of people who lived up there,”JD said.
In no time he jumped onto his ATV (越野车) and rode directly towards the fire to make his neighbors aware of the emergency.
“I was the first person who saw the fire. I felt like I needed to make sure everybody knew to leave immediately,”he said.
On the way to his neighbors' homes, the flames were growing, smoke was building and the fire was spreading.
“By the time I got back down, the fire was so bad on both sides of the road that I had to consider whether to go back and risk getting burnt or to stay up and wait for the fire service,”JD said.
But his decision was clear: he was going to head back. “He just told me from the hospital, ‘Dad, if I didn't come through the fire I knew you were going to get in your truck and try to find me.’ And he knew my truck was going to be in danger. So he just drove fast and came through,”said JD's father, James TenNapel.
When JD was put in an ambulance, he had one final act of heroism (英雄主义) left.
“He likes to ride the ATV down off the stream and there's a narrow area down there. He knows there's an older person living there who he was trying to get to,”James said.
JD let the firefighters know about the elderly woman who was unable to get out of her home.
“I don't really care whether people think I'm a hero or not,”said JD, who suffered second-degree burns on his arms, legs and back. “I just did the right thing and had to give up my body a little bit but I know that I hopefully saved a few lives.”

Let me ask you a question: What is the tallest mountain on Earth? Most school children will say the answer is Mount Everest near the border between Nepal and Tibet.
There is something that is 304 meters taller than Mount Everest. However, it is mainly underwater. It begins at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, and rises more than 17 kilometers from the ocean floor.
Its name is Mauna Loa. In the Hawaiian language,Mauna Loa means“Long Mountain”. Mauna Loa is more than half of the island of Hawaii, the largest of the Hawaiian Islands.
It is also the largest and most active volcano on Earth. It has produced liquid rock called lava more than thirty times since records were first kept in 1843. Today, Mauna Loa is quiet. It is not producing lava. However, volcano experts say it is only a matter of time before this happens once again.
SARAH LONG: Mauna Loa is not the only volcano on the island of Hawaii. There are four others. Three of them are no longer active. One of them still is active. It is named Kilauea.
It has produced lava more than fifty times in the last one hundred years. At this moment, red hot lava is pouring out of Kilauea. It has been doing this since 1983.
Sometimes the lava moves slowly. At other times, it pours out very fast as huge amounts of pressure force it from the volcano. During these times, it moves almost as quickly as water moving down the side of a mountain. Sometimes Kilauea produces large amounts of lava that seem like rivers of fire.
Experts say the volcanoes of the island of Hawaii are proof that the changing environment of Earth is, and will always remain, beyond human control.
