A
From the very beginning of school we make books and reading a constant source of possible failure and public humiliation. When children are little we make them read aloud, before the teacher and other children, so that we can be sure they “know” all the words they are reading. This means that when they don’t know a word, they are going to make a mistake, right in front of everyone. After having taught fifth-grade classes for four years, I decided to try at all costs to rid them of their fear and dislike of books, and to get them to read oftener and more adventurously.
One day soon after school had started, I said to them, “Now I’m going to say something about reading that you have probably never heard a teacher say before. I would like you to read a lot of books this year, but I want you to read them only for pleasure. I am not going to ask you questions to find out whether you understand the books or not. If you understand enough of a book to enjoy it and want to go on reading it, that’s enough for me. And I’m not going to ask you what words mean.”
The children sat stunned and silent. Was this a teacher talking? One girl, who had just come to us from a school where she had had a very hard time, looked at me steadily for a long time after I had finished. Then, still looking at me, she said slowly and seriously, “Mr. Holt, do you really mean that?”
I said just as seriously, “I mean every word of it.”
During the spring she really astonished me. One day, she was reading at her desk. From a glimpse of the illustrations I thought I knew what the book was. I said to myself, “It can’t be,” and went to take a closer look. Sure enough, she was reading Moby Dick, in the edition with woodcuts. I said, “Don’t you find parts of it rather heavy going?” She answered, “Oh, sure, but I just skip over those parts and go on to the next good part.”
This is exactly what reading should be and in school so seldom is --- an exciting, joyous adventure. Find something, dive into it, take the good parts, skip the bad parts, get what you can out of it, go on to something else. How different is our mean-spirited, picky insistence that every child get every last little scrap of “understanding” that can be dug out of a book.
41. According to the passage, children’s fear and dislike of books may result from __________.
A. reading little and think little.
B. reading often and adventurously
C. being made to read too much
D. being made to read aloud before others
42. Upon hearing the teacher’s talk, the children probably felt that __________.
A. it sounded stupid
B. it was not surprising at all
C. it sounded too good to be true
D. it was no different from other teachers’ talk
43. Which of the following statements about the girl is TRUE according to the passage?
A. She skipped over those easy parts while reading.
B. She had a hard time finishing the required reading tasks.
C. She learned to appreciate some parts of the difficult books.
D. She turned out to be a top student after coming to this school.
44. From the teacher’s point of view, __________.
A. children cannot tell good parts from bad parts while reading
B. children should be left to decide what to read and how to read
C. reading is never a pleasant and inspiring experience in school
D. reading involves understanding every little piece of information

Graphs can be a very useful tool for conveying information, especially numbers, percentages, and other data. A graph gives the reader a picture to interpret. That can be more efficient than pages and pages explaining the data.
Graphs can seem frightening, but reading a graph is a lot like reading a story. The graph has a title, a main idea, and supporting details. You can use your active reading skills to analyze and understand graphs like any other text.
Most graphs have a few basic parts: a caption or introduction paragraph, a title, a legend or key, and labeled axes. An active reader looks at each part of the graph before trying to interpret the data. Captions will usually tell you where the data from (for example, a scientific study of 400 African elephants from 1980 to 2005). Captions usually summarize the author’s main point as well. The title is very important. It tells you the main idea of the graph by stating what kind of information is being shown. A legend, also called a key, is a guide to the symbols and colors used in the graph. Many graphs, including bar graphs and line graphs, have two axes that form a corner. Usually these axes are the left side and the bottom of the graph. Each axis will always have a label tells you what each axis measures.
Bar Graphs
A bar graph has two axes and uses bars to show
amounts. In Graph 1, we see that the x-axis shows
grades students earned, and the y-axis shows how
many
students earned each grade. You can see that 6
students
earned an A because the bar for A stretches up to
6 on the
vertical measurement. There is a lot of
information we can
get from a simple graph like this (See Graph 1)
A line graph looks similar to a bar graph, but
instead of bars, it plots points and connects them
with a line. It has the same parts as a bar
graph---two labeled axes---and can be read the
same way. To read a line graph, it’s important to
focus on the points of intersection rather than the
line segments between the points. This type of
graph is most commonly used to show how something
changes over time. Here is a graph that charts how
far a bird flies during the first five days of its
spring migration (See Graph 2).
The unit of measurement for the x-axis is days. The unit of measurement for the y-axis is kilometers.
Thus we can see that, on the first day, the pipit flew 20 kilometers. The line segment goes up between
Day 1 and Day 2, which means that the bird flew farther on Day 2. If the line segment angled down, as
between Day 4 and Day 5, it would mean that the bird flew fewer kilometers than the day before. This
line graph is a quick, visual way to tell the reader about the bird’s migration.
Pie Graphs
A typical pie graph looks like a circular pie. The circle is divided into sections, and each section
represents a fraction of the data. The graph is commonly used to show
percentages; the whole pie represents 100 percent, so each piece is a
fraction of the whole.A pie graph might include a legend, or it might
use icons or labels within each slice. This pie graph shows one month’s
expenses(See Graph 3).
Food $25 Movies $12 Clothing $36
Savings$20 Books $7
45. When used in a graph, a legend is __________.
A. a guide to the symbols and colors
B. an introduction paragraph
C. the main idea
D. the data
46. What is the total number of students who earned a C or better?
A. 4.
B. 6.
C. 10.
D. 20.
47. The bird covered the longest distance on __________.
A. Day 1.
B. Day 2.
C. Day 3.
D. Day 4.
48. Which of the following cost Amy most?
A. Food.
B. Books.
C. Movies.
D. Clothing.

There is an English saying, “Laughter is the best medicine.” Until recently, few people took the saying seriously. Now however, doctors have begun to look into laughter and the effects it has on the human body. They have found that laughter really can improve people’s health.
Tests were carried out to study the effects of laughter on the body. People watched funny films while doctors checked their heart, blood pressure, breathing and muscles. It was found that laughter has similar effects to physical exercise. It increases blood pressure, makes the heart beat quicker and makes people breathe deeper; it also works several groups of muscles in the face, the stomach, and even the feet. If laughter exercises the body, it must be beneficial.
Other tests have shown that laughter appears to be able to reduce the effect of pain on the body. In one experiment doctors produced pain in groups of students who listened to different radio programmes. The group that tolerated the pain for the longest time was the group which listened to a funny programme. The reason why laughter can reduce pain seems to be that it helps to produce a kind of chemical in the brain which diminishes both stress and pain.
As a result, some doctors in the United States hold laughter clinics, in which they help to improve their patients’ condition by encouraging them to laugh. They have found that even if their patients do not really feel like laughing, making them smile is enough to produce beneficial effects similar to those caused by laughter.
49. The underlined word “diminish es” in the third paragraph means “”.
A. delays
B. prevents
C. increases
D. reduces
50. Why do doctors hold laughter clinics?
A. Because they want to ear n more money.
B. Because they think they will help the patients recover from illnesses.
C. Because they want to improve their patients’ health.
D. Because they want their patients to laugh more.
51. What would be the best title for this passage?
A. Both laughter and physical exercise are good for health.
B. Laughter clinics can help patients improve their condition.
C. Laughter can reduce the effect of pain.
D. Laughter is the best medicine.

The Golden Compass is the first movie based on the Philip Pullman's bestselling novel, His Dark Materials. It is a work of imagination that tells us about a young girl who travels to north to save her best friend.Along the way she meets strange creatures, like witches and so on. Finally , she saves not only her world, but also ours as well.
Lyra is a young girl among scholars in Oxford's Jordan College. She spends most of her time with her friend Roger, a kitchen boy. Together, they share a life with no worries. However, when Lyra hears a conversation about a very tiny particle(颗粒), she is thrown into a dangerous adventure. This particle is said to unite different worlds, and is feared by many people who want to destroy it. At the same time , children began to disappear without a trace, including Lyra's good friend, Roger. As Lyra starts this horrible struggle, and begins to search for Roger, she meets strange creatures both big and small,
and bad people who are not what they seem to be. Gobblers(饕餮者) that kidnap(绑架)children appear in the most unexpected places. And a magical compass made of gold will answer any question if one is skilled enough to read it. In unbelievable danger, Lyra doesn't know that she is doomed to win, or to lose, this battle…
With the movie The Lord of the Rings making New Line cinema over a billion dollars, it's easy to see why they got the rights to Pullman's His Dark Materials quickly. The books, sold more than nine million copies in the world, have a different idea from the Harry Potter series. Pullman's imagination may look suitable for children, but it works far better for adu lts.
52.In the film The Golden Compass, Lyra______.
A.is a student in Oxford's Jordan College B.is a kitchen boy
C.hears a conversation of Roger's D.meets many strange creatures
53.The film is named The Golden Compass probably because______.
A.the compass is useful enough to help Lyra B.only skilled people can read the compass C.the compass which is made of gold can answer any question
D.the compass throughout the whole story is a clue
54.From the passage we can conclude that______.
A.New Line Cinema won Pullman's trust through its achievement
B.The Lord of the Rings is also based on one of Pullman's novels
C.His Dark Materials is similar to the Harry Potter series
D.New Line Cinema made over a billion dollars through the Harry Potter series
55.Which group of people will like the film The Golden Compass best according to the passage?
A.Children B.Junior students C.Adults D. Only old people
第二节:下面文章中有5个段落需要添加首句。

请从以下选项(A、B、C、D、E和F)中选出适合各段落的首句,并在答题纸上将相应选项的标号涂黑。

选项中有一项是多余选项。

A. Come in with something to say.
B. Prepare general comments.
C.Bring materials with you.
D.Don’t make them wait.
E.Have no fear.
F.Go it alone.
One of the best things you can do any time in the semester is go see the professor. So hoof on over to an office hour and have some one-on-one face time with someone who’ll help you master the material and improve your grade, to boot. But how should you have this conversation with the professor? Here are five insider tips about how to make that office hour really count:.
56._________ No need to get all bent out of shape about going to see the professor. The professor would actually like to see you and answer your questions. Believe it or not, he or she is on your side and is eager to see you do well. And besides, he or she has seen many students stupider than you, so nothing you’re going to ask will set the record for stupidity.
57._________ Even though you might feel more comfortable going with a friend or partner, the office hour will go better if it’s just you and the professor. You’ll get in more questions, the discussion
will be tailored to what you need most help on, and two-party communication is almost always more productive than committee work. Your friend can wait outside for the discussion.
58.__________ If you can’t make the official office hours, most professors are willing to make individual appointments to help you out. If you’re lucky enough to land such an accommodation, though, be sure you’re 100 percent on time. There’s nothing that ticks off a professor more than making him-or herself available for a custom office hour only to find that you don’t care enough to come on time. And besides, the professor might leave after ten minutes, which would make your trip a total loss.
59.__________ If you’re meeting with the professor to go over a paper or test, or to ask questions about a particular lecture or reading, make sure you bring that paper or test, or your lecture notes or a copy of the article. The professor doesn’t remember the comments he or she wrote on your individual piece of work---though he or she will be able to recall them after just a brief glance at your work. And if you have your lecture notes or the article in hand, you and the professor will be able to examine specific points that are confusing to you, rather than just talking in a general way about the contents.
60.___________ Office hours almost always go better if you bring a few specific questions to the meeting. It’s almost never good to start a meeting with general comments such as“I didn’t understand what you said about [main topic of the course]” or“I couldn’t understand any of your lectures last week.” Much better is to come in with two or three conversation-starters about a specific concept, point, or problem you didn’t understand. Keep in mind that in a fifteen-minute office hour (which is how long these things usually last), two or three questions are usually the most you’ll have time to discuss.第四部分:书面表达(共三节,满分50分)
第一节:语法填空(共10小题,每小题1.5分,满分15分)
阅读下面材料,在空白处填入适当的内容(1个单词)或括号内单词的正确形式。

A year ago, my son Michael, who had just graduated from high school, had to choose between two summer jobs. He could work either at my basketball camp 61 at one of the horse farms in the Lexington, Kentucky, area. It was his choice. He 62 (choose) the horse farm, because he was tired of working my camps, and he thought he could make more money at the horse farm. But___63___only a few days he realized he hated it. Farm work is hard, and he was spending most of his time 64 (walk)horses on a treadmill and shoveling manure. One day a couple of weeks into the summer he came to me and said he’d made a mistake and 65 rather work at my basketball camp.
I understood, but I told him that he’d made a commitment and now he was going to have to follow through with it, no matter 66 unpleasant. Quitting was not an option.
Sometimes, of course, we fail to accomplish our goals. But we have to remember that failure is a part of life and failure is only fertilizer for future success. I’ve often heard people say that failure teaches us 67 . I don’t believe it. There are so many lessons we can learn 68 failure. Most of all, we learn what 69 to do .It’s like the child who touches the hot stove, and then keeps doing it. The first time is part of the learning process. The second time it’s stupid.
The only time failure is truly bad is if you use it 70 an excuse to quit.

Dear Ms Li,
I am very happy to have you as our English teacher.
As the world is becoming a global village, English is getting more and more important, so mastering English means we can see the world through a new window.
My English is just OK and the two main problems in my study are that I feel it difficult to learn words by heart, and that I often feel nervous when speaking English. I really hope that you can give me good advice on how to memorize new words. Another suggestion is to give us more chances to practice speaking. I believe we can make much progress in English with your help.
Thank you!。
