When I was a child, my parents always told me that I should never talk to strangers. This was part of a whole list of things I should never do: Never accept food or candy from strangers, never get in a car with strangers, and so on. They think strangers may do something harmful to us.
But if we didn't start a conversation with strangers, we'd never make new friends. We'd never get a job. We may miss the happiness that comes from talking with strangers. And the more people you know, the more chances you can get.
The following passage offers you some advice on how to break the ice.
Don't just look at your shoes. Go and say "Hi" to that new guy. It will be easier to break the ice if you know more about different cultures.
British: Beautiful day, isn't it?
The weather in Britain is changeable. So, it is one of the topics the British care most about. And there's a simple rule: Say "Yes" whether you agree with the person's idea on the weather or not. That's because the British start a conversation using the weather so that they can continue their talk.
French: Where did you go on holiday?
To talk with a French person, the safest way is to ask about his or her last holiday. French students enjoy a 10-to-15-day holiday every two months. French employees(雇员) get more than one and a half months of holidays every year.
American: So, where are you from?
The US is so big and people move so often that place is always a source(来源) of talk. You can try to find a connection with the place they're from. For example, if someone is from Los Angeles, you could say, "Oh, I have a friend who studied there."

When I was about 12, I had an "enemy", a girl who liked to point out my shortcomings(缺
点). Sometimes she said I was thin. Sometimes she said I was lazy. Sometimes she said I wasn't a good student. Sometirmes she said I talked too much, and so on. I tried to put up with(忍受)her as long as I could. At last, I became very angry. I ran to my father with tears in my eyes.
He listened to me quietly, and then he asked, "Are the things she said true or not? Mary, have you ever wondered what you're really like? Go and make a list of everything she said and mark the points that are true. Pay no attention to the other things she said. "
I did as he told me and I was very surprised to discover that about half the things were true.
I took the list to my dad. He refused to take it. "That's just for you," he said. "You know the truth about yourself better than any other people. When something said about you is true, it will be helpful to you. Don't shut your ears. Listen to them all, but remember the truth and do what you think is right."
Many years have passed. The situation often appears in my mind. In our life we often meet with some trouble and we often go to someone and ask for advice. For some advice you will treasure(珍惜)all your life!

Once people thought that dinosaurs were brown or gray in colour, but the answer is to be found out. After examining the remains of a dinosaur, scientists say the colour of the feathers is bright. American and Chinese scientists rebuilt the feathers of a flightless(不能飞的)dinosaur that lived about 150 million years ago, and researchers studied melanosomes(黑素体)in the feathers. The researchers compared them to the melanosomes that control the colour of feathers on modern birds. They were then able to make out the colours of dinosaurs' feathers. Richard Prum, a biologist(生物学家)at Yale University, said the dinosaur would be a beautiful creature if it were still alive. The discovery is useful to scientists in another way. It helps them better understand not only how dinosaurs looked but also how they lived in their daily life. Some
researchers plan to use this way to study the colours of other feathered dinosaurs.

So we may say that pandas are lucky because people around the world love them and are trying their best to help them. However, we also say that pandas are unlucky because they are still facing a lot of problems now.
Pandas are not good at making babies. Even in the wild, scientists have found that female pandas give birth only every 28 months. That’s why the number of pandas goes up so slowly.
Pandas need bamboos for food, but bamboo dies every 10 to 100 years. It can take up to 20 years to provide(提供) food for pandas. When bamboo dies, pandas have to move to other areas. In the past, this was easy. However, the number of people keeps growing, people cut down more forests and built more villages. It’s more difficult for pandas to find bamboos and homes than before.

They can lift heavy things. Elephants are very friendly towards each other and towards their neighbours. Now, there are very few elephants in the world. The number of them is becoming smaller and smaller because their living areas are used for farming. Also, people hunt them for their tusks.
Wolves

Maybe you know floods, earthquakes, sandstorms and so on. But have you heard of typhoons? Typhoons are some of the worst storms, usually around the Pacific Ocean and the South China Sea. Most happen in July, August and September.
How does a typhoon happen? When lots of sea water gets hot in the summer sun, it evaporates (蒸发)into the air. This makes the air hotter. When the air gets warm enough, it starts to move higher up into sky. Then cooler air around it rushes in. It fills the space that is left. After the air gets warmer, it starts to move quickly, making wind. The wind goes in circles(圆圈)and it keeps moving higher in the sky. The warmer the air gets, the quicker the wind moves. And when the wind moves faster than 30 metres a second, a typhoon begins.
A typhoon has two parts, one is called the “eye”. In the eye, the wind does not move so fast. The other part is the wall of clouds around the eye. Here are the strongest winds and hardest rains.
Typhoons are very dangerous. In November this year, Typhoon Haiyan killed 5500 people in Philippines. More people are missing.
What to do when a typhoon hits?
Stay inside. Close all the windows and stay away from them.

As a new immigrant (移民) in Australia, I sometimes find it hard to get into the local culture. After reading the book Unpolished Gem(《未经雕琢的宝石》)by Australian writer Alice Pung, I found I am not alone. Pung had the same story as me.
The story is set in Melbourne. Pung's parents are from Cambodia. They have lived in Australia for years. But Pung still has difficulties understanding both cultures.
One is the white Australian culture she lives in. The other is her family's traditional Asian values (价值观). For example, her parents tell her, "You are going to be a lawyer and marry a doctor". This makes Pung want to run away from her life. However, as she argues with her white boyfriend, she knows that traditional Asian values are part of her life. In the end, she happily accepts her own cultural background (背景).
Since Pung lived in her home country for 18 years, it wasn't easy for her to understand Australian culture. I have found that I feel the same way sometimes. In Asian culture, we put a lot of importance on our studies and getting into a good college. But it seems like Western kids are more carefree.
I liked this book because it really shows what it's like to live as an immigrant. I highly recommend (推荐) it to anyone who wants to know what it's like to be an immigrant.

Up to two thirds of children don't get as much sleep as they should do, and this can make them nervous and slow at school, researchers say.
So how long should young people sleep each night? The answer is between 8 and 10 hours. If you don't get enough sleep at night, you'll have less energy the next day.
But the researchers say many children have missed out on 4,500 hours of sleep by the time they are seven years old. They say that children miss sleep because they have TVs and computers in their rooms, and busy parents don't read to their younger children at night any more. The tradit ional “bedtime story” helps children to relax and fall asleep peacefully. Children with TVs and computers in their bedrooms were more likely to sleep badly, and to get less than eight hours' sleep. Even losing one hour's sleep a night can mean that children do less well at school.
German scientists think that your brain keeps working while you're asleep. To show that they were right, they gave two groups of people a problem to work out. One group went to sleep, and the other group stayed awake. The result? The people who slept worked out the answer more quickly, suggesting their brains had been trying to find the answer while the people were asleep. So, make sure you get enough sleep tonight, and you'll be at your best tomorrow!

When you are learning English, listening, speaking and writing are important, but reading can also be very helpful. When you read, you can not only learn some new words, but also you can learn how to use these English words. When you read, it gives you a good example for writing.
Good reading tips:
Try to read at the right level(水平). Read something that you can (more or less)understand. If you need to stop every three words to use a dictionary, it is not interesting.
Try to increase the number of your new words. If there are four or five new words on a page, write them in your notebook. But you don't have to write them while you read. Instead, try to guess their meaning as you read: mark them with a pen. Then come back when you have finished reading to look them up in a dictionary and write them in your own vocabulary book. Then try to remember them.
Try to read regularly. For example, read for a short time once a day. Fifteen minutes every day is better than two hours every Sunday. Fix(固定) a time to read and keep to it. You could read for fifteen minutes when you go to bed, or when you get up or at lunchtime.
Read what interests you. Choose a book or a magazine about a subject that you like, because you are going to spend time and money reading it. So, choose an interesting book. You can also read newspapers. There are many English newspapers in China. For example, 21st Century Teens. It is easy enough for you to understand it. There is something interesting in it.
