Education is not an end, but a means to an end. In other words, we do not educate children only for the purpose of educating them. Our purpose is to fit them for life. In some modern countries it has for some time been fashionable to think that by free education for all whether rich or poor, clever or stupid - one can solve all the problems of society and build a perfect nation. But we can already see that free education for all is not enough; we find in such countries a far larger number of people with university degree;they refuse to do what they think "low" work; and, in fact, work with hands is thought to be dirty and shameful in such countries. But we have only to think a moment to understand that the work of a completely uneducated farmer is far more important than that of a professor; we can live without education, but we die if we have no food. If no one cleaned our streets and took the rubbish away from our houses, we should get terrible diseases in our towns…
In fact, when we say that all of us must be educated to fit us for life, it means that we must be educated in such a way that, firstly, each of us can do whatever work suited to his brains and ability and, secondly, that we can realize that all jobs are necessary to society, and that it is very bad to be ashamed of one's work. Only such a type of education can be considered valuable to society.
24. The writer of the passage thinks that _______.
A. education can settle most of the world's problems
B. free education for all probably leads to a perfect world
C. free education won't help to solve problems
D. all the social problems can't be solved by education
25. The writer wants to prove that _______.
A. our society needs all kinds of jobs
B. our society needs free education for all
C. a farmer is more important than a professor
D. work with hands is the most important
26. The purpose of education is _______.
A. to choose officials for the country
B. to prepare children mainly for their future work
C. to let everyone receive education fit for him
D. to build a perfect world
27. The passage tells us about _______ of the education.
A. the means
B. the system
C. the value
D. the type

Ever walked to the shops only to find, once there, you’ve completely forgotten what you went for? Or struggled to remember the name of an old friend? For years we’ve accepted that a forgetful brain is as much a part of ageing as wrinkles and grey hair. But now a new book suggests that we’ve got it all wrong.
According to The Secret Life of the Grown-up Brain, by science writer Barbara Strauch, when it comes to the important things, our brains actually get better with age. In fact, she argues that some studies have found that our brain hits its peak between our 40s and 60s – much later than previously thought.
Furthermore, rather than losing many brain cells as we age, we retain them, and even produce new ones well into middle age. For years it’s been assumed that brain, much like the body, declines with age. But the longest, largest study into what happens to people as they age suggests otherwise.
This continuing research has followed 6,000 people since 1956, testing them every seven years. It has found that on average, participants performed better on cognitive (认知的) tests in their 40s and 50s than they had done in their 20s. Specifically, older people did better on tests of vocabulary, verbal memory (how many words you can remember) and problem solving.
Where they performed less well was number ability and perceptual speed – how fast you can push a button when ordered. However, with more complex tasks such as
problem-solving and language, we are at our best at middle age and beyond. In short, researchers are now coming up with scientific proof that we do get wiser with age.
Neuroscientists are also finding that we are happier with ageing. A recent US study found older people were much better at controlling and balancing their emotions. It is thought that when we’re younger we need to focus more on the negative aspects of life in order to learn about the possible dangers in the world, but as we get older we’v e learned our lessons and are sub-consciously aware that we have less time left in life: therefore, it becomes more important for us to be happy.
28. Barbara Strauch probably agrees that __________.
A. the young are better at handling important things
B. ageing leads to the decline of the function of the brain
C. people’s brains work best between their 40s and 60s
D. wrinkles and grey hair are the only symbols of ageing
29. The continuing research has found older people perform better on
__________.
A. number ability
B. perceptual speed
C. body
balance D. vocabulary tests
30. People are happier with age because __________.
A. they know how to share feelings
B. they cannot focus on negative
aspects
C. they learn to value the time left
D. they do not realize the
possible dangers
31. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. People get more forgetful with age.
B. People get
wiser with age.
C. People get happier with age.
D. People get more self-aware with age.
D
The values of artistic works, according to cultural relativism(相对主义), are simply reflections of local social and economic conditions. Such a view, however, fails to explain the ability of some works of art to excite the human mind across cultures and through centuries.
History has witnessed the endless productions of Shakespearean plays in every major language of the world. It is never rare to find that Mozart packs Japanese
concert halls, as Japanese painter Hiroshige does Paris galleries, Unique works of this kind are different from today’s popular art, even if they began as works of popular art. They have set themselves apart in their timeless appeal and will probably be enjoyed for centuries into the future.
In a 1757 essay, the philosopher David Hume argued that because “the general principles of taste are uniform(不变的) in human nature,” the value of some works of art might be essentially permanent. He observed that Homer was still admired after two thousand years. Works of this type, he believed, spoke to deep and unvarying features of human nature and could continue to exist over centuries.
Now researchers are applying scientific methods to the study of the universality of art. For example, evolutionary psychology is being used by literary scholars to explain the long-lasting themes and plot devices in fiction. The structures of musical pieces are now open to experimental analysis as never before. Research findings seem to indicate that the creation by a great artist is as permanent an achievement as the discovery by a great scientist.
32.According to the passage, what do we know about cultural relativism?
A. It introduces different cultural values.
B. It relates artistic values
to local conditions.
C. It explains the history of artistic works.
D. It excites the human mind
throughout the world.
33. In Paragraph 2, the artists are mentioned in order to show that __________.
A. history gives art works special appeal to set them apart
B. great artists are skilled at combining various cultures
C. popular arts are hardly distinguishable from great arts
D. great works of art can go beyond national boundaries
34. According to Hume, some works of art can exist for centuries because __________.
A. they appeal to unchanging features of human nature
B. they are created by the world’s greatest artists
C. they establish some general principles of art
D. they are results of scientific study
35. Which of the following can best serve as the title of the passage?
A. Are Popular Arts Permanent?
B. Is Human Nature Uniform?
C. Are Artistic Values Universal?
D. Is Cultural Relativism Scientific?

To a Chinese, English is not so easy to learn. Like all the other English learners,
managed 62 (overcome) them and make much progress.
I can well remember 63 the spelling and meaning of words is the first difficulty I met as a beginner. But I found out my own way to deal with them. As to spelling I never copied 64 new word again and again to remember it. As to meaning, I rarely recite its Chinese 65 (translate) but often put the word into the sentence to learn 66 (it) meaning. Moreover, if you use a word quite often, its spelling and meaning will be no problem. After all, we are learning English in order to speak it. Grammar and idioms may be another difficulty. But I have also got over it. I have not read lots of grammar books. I only know some ordinary grammatical 67 (rule). By doing so, I come to taste out “a sense of English language”. I can feel whether a sentence is good English or not. 68 (final), I want to say that overcoming all these difficulties needs perseverance. Every day, I spent at least an hour 69 English in the past seven years. I believe, this is an important reason 70 I am able to make progress in learning English.

作文参考答案:
Dear friends,
Nowadays we can still see some behavior against public morals. As is often the case, people tend to talk loud in public places, annoying others around. Spitting and littering rubbish can be seen everywhere. What's more, it's common that the young or middle-aged sit on the bus while the elderly stand.
Measures must be taken to change this situation. First of all, as students, we should manage our own behavior and help people around us form good habits. Meanwhile, it is necessary for the government and authorized organizations to encourage people to behave properly.
Don't underestimate the role you can play. Do remember we can make a difference! Take action right now! Thank you!。
