How I Successfully Relieved My Stress
Stress is something that everyone experiences, even kids like me. It can come from lots of different things - schoolwork, activities, family issues, you name it. For a while, I really struggled with feeling stressed out and overwhelmed. It was affecting my sleep, my mood, and just making me feel generally crummy. But I'm happy to say that I've found some great ways to manage my stress levels and I feel so much better now!
The first step was realizing that I needed to make some changes. I knew I couldn't keep going the way I was - staying up late, not eating well, letting my responsibilities pile up. I had to get serious about taking care of myself, both physically and mentally. That's when I decided to put together my very own "de-stressing plan."
Part one of my plan was getting more exercise. I've always liked being active, but I had kind of fallen out of the habit. My parents signed me up for a soccer team, which I loved. Running
around and kicking the ball was the perfect way to blow off steam after a long day at school. On top of soccer practice, I started going for daily walks or bike rides with my dad. The fresh air and movement helped so much in clearing my mind.
Part two was about changing my mindset through meditation and positive self-talk. I'll be honest, at first I thought meditation was kind of silly and just for grown-ups. But my mom showed me some kid-friendly meditation videos on YouTube and I really got into it. Taking ten minutes each day to just breathe deeply, clear my mind, and repeat positive mantras like "I am calm, I am powerful" made a huge difference in how I felt. Whenever I started feeling anxious, I would pause and say some affirmations to myself. It's amazing how much our thoughts can influence our emotions.
The third part of managing my stress was improving my sleep habits. I have a bad tendency to stay up way too late, either watching TV, playing video games, or just laying in bed unable to fall asleep. But not getting enough rest made everything so much harder to deal with the next day. With some help from my parents, I established a strict bedtime routine - no screens after 8pm, take a warm shower, read for 30 minutes, then lights out by 9:30. Within a week of sticking to this schedule, I felt like a new
kid. Enough sleep is so key when it comes to being able to handle stress.
Of course, improving my nutrition was another critical piece of the puzzle. I love junk food as much as the next kid, but eating too much of it was definitely contributing to my moodiness and lack of energy. My mom and I went grocery shopping and stocked up on all kinds of healthy snacks like fresh fruits, veggies, yogurt, and granola bars. Having good fuel gave me so much more stamina to power through my days without feeling drained.
I still allow myself occasional treats, but making sure I get lots of nutrients is a priority.
The last part of my plan focused on making time for activities I truly enjoy. When I was feeling super stressed, I stopped doing many of the hobbies and interests that normally bring me joy and relaxation. But that was a mistake - those "fun" pastimes are an essential outlet. I started drawing and painting again, which allows me to be creative and gets me into a sort of meditative flow state. Reading fiction books, working on puzzles, and playing with my dog also made me happy. Having built-in Break times was crucial for recharging.
In addition to all those components of my de-stress routine, I've also made an effort to communicate better when I'm feeling
overwhelmed. Instead of bottling everything up, I talk to my parents, teachers, or friends about what's on my mind. Just being able to vocalize my worries makes them seem so much more manageable. The people who care about me are always willing to listen without judgment and provide advice or reassurance.
Looking back, I can't believe how worked up and anxious I allowed myself to become for a while there. Implementing my personal stress relief plan has honestly been life-changing. By exercising, meditating, practicing positive self-talk, prioritizing sleep, eating nutritious foods, making time for fun, and openly communicating my feelings, I've gone from feeling constantly frazzled to being a much calmer, happier, and all-around healthier kid.
I know I'm still young and have so much more to learn when it comes to managing stress long-term. There will definitely be more challenges and periods of elevated stress as I get older. But now I have a toolbox full of techniques that I can turn to whenever I need to relax and reset. More than anything, I've learned that taking care of my mental health has to be a priority, not an afterthought. Stress is normal, but it doesn't have to run my life. I'm the boss of my thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. With my de-stressing plan, I've got this!

How I Successfully Relieved My Stress
Stress is something that everyone experiences, even kids like me. It can come from things like having too much homework, fighting with friends, or feeling pressure to do well in school or activities. When I get stressed out, it makes me feel worried, anxious, and sometimes even gives me a stomachache or headache. It's an awful feeling that I really don't like at all.
For a long time, I didn't know how to deal with my stress in a good way. Sometimes I would get mad and yell at my parents or siblings when I was feeling stressed, which usually just made things worse. Other times I would just shut down and not want to do anything at all. But then my mom helped me learn some great ways to relieve stress, and they have made such a big difference for me. Let me tell you about them!
The first thing my mom taught me was how to do deep breathing exercises. At first, I thought it sounded kind of silly and boring. But she explained that taking slow, deep breaths can actually help relax your mind and body when you're feeling anxious or tense. She showed me how to breathe in slowly through my nose while counting to five, hold my breath for a few
seconds, and then exhale out through my mouth while counting to seven. Doing this just a few times really does make me feel more calm and peaceful inside. It's like magic!
Another great stress-relieving trick I learned is muscle relaxation. When you're stressed, your muscles can get all tight and bunched up without you even realizing it. So my mom taught me to consciously tense up different muscles, hold it for a few seconds, and then fully relax them one by one. I start with my face, then move down to my neck and shoulders, arms, stomach, and all the way down to my legs and feet. Releasing that muscular tension has an amazing way of releasing tension in my mind too.
My mom also got me started on keeping a journal to write about whatever is stressing me out. At first I didn't think I'd like it because I'm not a huge fan of writing. But it actually feels really good to get my worries, fears, and frustrations out of my head and down on paper. My journal is a safe, private place where I can freely express my feelings without fear of being judged or criticized. Sometimes after writing about a problem, I can look at it from a new perspective and it doesn't seem quite as bad.
In addition to these mental strategies, my mom also made sure I had plenty of physical outlets for my stress as well. We
started going for long walks together a few times a week where we can get outdoors, breathe some fresh air, and just appreciate the beauty around us for a while. Being out in nature instantly puts me in a better mood. We also took up yoga together, which combines physical movement with deep breathing, both of which are awesome for reducing stress levels. Getting regular exercise has been key too – whether it's playing sports, riding bikes, or just running around the park with my friends.
Probably the biggest change that helped relieve my stress though, was improving my sleep habits. My mom helped me realize that I simply wasn't getting enough quality sleep most nights, which made me feel tired, cranky, and less able to cope with life's inevitable challenges and pressures. We instituted an earlier bedtime and created a relaxing pre-bedtime routine that includes things like turning off screens an hour before bed, taking a warm bath, reading a book, or listening to calm music. Getting sufficient sleep each night has boosted my mood, concentration, and overall sense of well-being tremendously.
Of course, I'm just a kid and I still get stressed out sometimes. That's totally normal and okay. But now that I have an arsenal of healthy techniques to cope with stress, it doesn't get me down or overwhelm me nearly as much as it used to. Some days I might
need to do some deep breathing exercises, while other days going for a bike ride or writing in my journal is enough to hit the reset button. The key has been learning what works best for me, and making these stress-relieving activities part of my regular routine, not just something I do when I'm already freaking out.
Having less stress in my life has made me feel so much happier, healthier, and more able to fully enjoy just being a kid. I can focus better on my schoolwork, engage more during activities, and be more patient and easygoing with my family and friends. I'm extremely grateful to my mom for helping me discover all these wonderful ways to keep my stress in check. Managing stress is an important life skill, and I feel really proud that I'm building a solid foundation for life-long healthy habits at such a young age.
So to any other kids out there who struggle with stress and anxiety, I want you to know that you're not alone! Getting overwhelmed is a normal part of life, but it doesn't have to control you or dictate your happiness. Talk to the caring adults in your life like parents, teachers, or counselors, and ask them to help you find stress-relieving methods that resonate with you. How I Successfully Relieved My Stress
Stress is something that happens to everyone, even kids like me! Last year when I was in 4th grade, I went through a really stressful time that made me feel anxious, frustrated, and overwhelmed. It was hard for me to concentrate in class or have fun playing with my friends. I'm going to tell you all about what caused my stress, how I felt during that time, and the different things I tried until I finally found ways to successfully relieve my stress.
The main thing that stressed me out was having too much on my plate. In addition to my normal schoolwork, I had also joined the school orchestra and was taking private violin lessons once a week. On top of that, my parents enrolled me in a math enrichment program and a reading comprehension class on the weekends to get ahead for the next school year. I absolutely love playing violin and am really interested in math and reading, but
doing all of those extra activities meant I had barely any free time left in the week.
I was staying up late every night trying to finish all my homework and practice violin. I started feeling tired all the time and had trouble waking up for school in the mornings. Sometimes I even fell asleep during my afternoon classes! My parents started getting frustrated that my grades weren't as high as they usually are. My violin teacher kept saying I needed to practice more because I was making silly mistakes during my lessons. I was overloaded and overwhelmed.
At first, I didn't really understand what was going on. I just felt grumpy, fatigued, and like I couldn't keep up with everything that was expected of me. My parents said I seemed stressed, but I didn't really know what that meant. After my mom explained that stress is feeling overly worried, tense, and burdened by too many demands, it really clicked. Yes, that's exactly how I felt!
Once I realized I was dealing with stress, I knew I had to find a way to get it under control before it started seriously impacting my health and my ability to function. The first thing I tried was better managing my time. I made a color-coded schedule to plan out when I would do my different activities and assignments each day. I also started packing my bag and laying out my
clothes the night before to make my mornings easier. Those organizational tips helped a little bit, but I was still feeling really stressed overall.
Next, I tried some relaxation techniques I had learned about in school, like taking deep breaths, going for walks, and doing simple stretches and yoga poses. Those calming strategies gave me little breaks from my stress, but as soon as I went back to my routine I felt the tension returning. I knew I needed to make bigger changes that would have a more lasting impact.
After talking with my parents, I made the difficult decision to cut back on some of my extracurricular activities. I loved all of my different classes, but there was no way I could keep doing everything while also managing my core schoolwork. I ended up taking a break from the math enrichment and reading comprehension programs. Not having those extra weekend classes freed up a lot of time and eliminated a major source of stress from my life.
In addition to cutting back on extracurriculars, I also implemented some new habits to better cope with the stress and busyness I couldn't eliminate entirely. In the evenings after dinner, I started doing 15-20 minutes of breathing exercises, light yoga, or just laying still and letting my mind wander. Taking
that reprieve from homework and activities helped clear my mind before bedtime. I also made sure to go to bed earlier, aiming for 9-10 hours of sleep per night. Getting enough rest made a huge difference in my energy levels and ability to focus during the day.
On the weekends, I made an effort to schedule in fun, stress-relieving activities with friends and family. Things like going to the park, playing board games, or just watching movies together helped me unwind and temporarily forget about academic pressures. Getting that mental break was so important and gave me a positive mindset heading into each new week.
My new routine definitely took some getting used to, but after a month or so of implementing these stress-relieving strategies, I could feel myself becoming a much calmer, happier, and more balanced kid. I still missed some of the activities I had to cut out, but it was definitely worth it to get my stress under control. My parents even noticed how much more relaxed I seemed. At the end of the school year, my grades were back up and I had done really well in the few extracurriculars I kept.
Now that I'm heading into 5th grade, I know how important it is to monitor my stress levels and keep prioritizing self-care activities like yoga, sleep, and fun outings with loved ones. I hope
I can continue using the stress management skills I've learned so I can stay healthy, focused, and enjoy being a kid. Dealing with stress is never easy, but I'm proud of myself for being proactive and finding strategies that worked for me.
