Using the expressio n “bird brain” was one way to insult(侮辱)another person’s IQ. That is because a bird’s brain is small. So, anyone with such a bird-sized brain was thought to be not that smart. But calling someone a “bird brain”might not be as insulting as before.
That finding comes from a study of the thinking abilities of birds. Two European scientists reported that at least two kinds of birds, crows and parrots, can think logically(有逻辑的). A crow or a parrot can recognize itself
when it sees itself in a mirror. The scientists say crows and parrots also have the ability to understand how other births feel. In other words, they are able to understand and share the experiences and feelings of other births.
According to researchers, these abilities are almost the same as those of apes(猿). However, we know that the brains of birds and those of apes are different. The brain of a bird does not have a neocortex(新皮质), which controls thinking and remembering. A bird brain is also much smaller than the brain of an ape or other monkeys.
So how can birds perform as well as mammals(哺乳动物)in some activities? Researchers in Germany found that the brains
of birds and mammals do have different structures(结构), but there are also some similarities. For example, both of their brains have what is called a pre-frontal cortex(前额叶皮质) that controls similar high-level activities. The reason of these similarities is that both of them have to fight to live in this world.
It’s interesting that you may also have more in common with a bird than you realize, according to some research. So, stop throwing the insult “bird brain” at someone who you think is stupid. “Bird brain” is losing its insulting meaning.
( )38. What does the underlined word “recognize” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. guess
B. know
C. admire
D. memorize
( )39. What is the main idea of the third paragraph?
A. The size of a bird brain is small.
B. Reasons of why birds are not clever.
C. Differences between the brains of birds and apes.
D. The bird brain and the ape brain are similar
( )40. The brains of birds and mammals have similarities mainly because .
A. both of them have to fight for living
B. they live in the same environment
C. their brain structures are the same
D. they always fight with each other

As a boy I learned so much on the way I grow up. We didn’t have much money, yet we were rich in all that mattered. My mom, dad, brothers, and I lived with my grandma in her ramshackle(摇摇欲坠的) house built from old cars. It was cold at times but we could always enjoy a hot meal made with love to warm our bodies and our hearts. Grandma had an old root cellar(地窖), four different vegetable gardens and a green thumb when it came to growing things. We could always have a delicious dinner every day.
But Grandma wasn’t satisfied(满足的) with just growing food, she wanted something
beautiful for the soul(灵魂) as well. She had flowers growing all around the house. She always knew how to nurture(培育) each plant, too. She would give each one the perfect amount of water and turn it regularly so it wouldn’t grow crooked(弯曲) as it stretched toward the sunshine. I could even remember her once chasing a cat away because she was afraid the cat might destroy her plants.
Sadly, I didn’t inherit(遗传) her green thumb for growing things. I had grown vegetables even rabbits wouldn’t steal and I had found that my flowers grew much better when I just left them alone. I did, however, I learn one thing from Grandma: how to nurture the soul.
I do so each day to grow the plants. I give
thanks to God for the food in my stomach and the flowers in the field. I cherish the beauty of this colorful world. I pet my dogs. I laugh often.
I hug my sons and daughters. I share smiles with strangers and my stories with everyone I meet. I help others. And I plant seeds(种子) of love, joy, kindness, and encouragement everywhere I go. May(祝愿) you do the same. May your green thumb nurture your soul and this world with love always.
