When Christopher Columbus landed on the then unnamed Costa Rica in 1502, he saw many Indians wearing gold earrings. So he thought the land must be rich in gold. He named the place Costa Rica, which means “rich coast” in Spanish.
Though little gold was found, Costa Rica today is indeed rich with coffee and bananas. Coffee is the most important product in Costa Rica and most of it is exported (出口) to other countries like America and West Germany. Bananas are the country’s second most important export.
Costa Ricans also grow many other crops such as fruits, corn and beans for their own
use. Costa Ricans love colors and their houses are painted in bright colors.
Education is very important to the Costa Ricans. Almost every village has a school and education is a must for children between seven and fourteen years of age. Boys and girls go to separate schools. Health insurance can be very expensive. Some working people do not make enough money to pay for it. In the US there is a program called Healthy Families. This program offers people health insurance at a low cost.
Families are charged about $7.00 a month for every child, and $10.00 for every adult. It costs much less than any other kind of health insurance. Having health insurance is very
important. With this insurance, people can see a doctor when they are sick or hurt. The program is not expensive at all, but many people are still not enrolling in it. People say that it still costs too much money. They need all of their money to pay for things like food and rent.
It would be great if everyone could have health insurance. People are working hard to come up with ways to make this happen. One idea is to make the Healthy Families Program free for some people.
It is important for people to see a doctor when they need to. The Healthy Families Program makes it possible for more people to do this. Many ideas are being considered. Hopefully some of them will allow even more families to get health insurance.
The Healthy Families Program is made to help those who don’t have welfare (社会保障金) and cannot earn enough to pay for private health insurance. It is an important program, but officials say that too many people are signing up for it and then dropping out because of the Healthy Families Program’s cost.

Why should I teach my children history? That sounds like a stupid question to even ask. But, as I hear different home schooling teachers discuss history, I get the idea that there may be different reasons for teaching history. Let me briefly explain the three good reasons for studying history and two bad reasons for studying history.
The major reason I see for studying history is that we can learn from the past. I am convinced that the world would be a much better place if more people understood the successes and failures of the past and the things that made these successes and failures. However, as the unfortunately true statement goes "the one thing we seem to learn from history is that we don't seem to learn from history." Perhaps at least in teaching history to my children I can do a small part in changing this.
A second major reason for studying history is that it is hard to understand the current (现在的,最近的) political climate in the absence of an understanding of its historical context. We cannot even understand why we are and where we are without history, much less (更不必说) try to figure out where we are going or how we should get where we want to be.
I teach my children history, for one more reason. I purchased a set of historical audio (录音机) tapes for our children. My seven-year-old son listened to them over and over. It was my hope that he would become inspired by the accomplishments of people like the Wright brothers to accomplish things by himself. I think that it is good that we celebrate the accomplishments of people like Martin Luther King Jr. if, in doing so, young people are called on to stand for the principles that he stood for and accomplish what he accomplished. I also think that by studying people like Adolph Hitler, people can learn to stand against the things that he stood for.
32. What message can we get from the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2?
A. Many people fail to make good use of history and make the same mistakes.
B. Many people aren't clever enough to learn well from the past.
C. Many people feel it hard to understand history.
D. Many people have no interest in studying history.
33. In Paragraph 3, the author shows that history is useful because ___________.
A. it makes the current political situation go smoothly
B. it helps us understand why things are the way they are.
C. it helps us realize the importance of historical events
D. it helps people accept the present situation where they live
34. What would be talked about in the following paragraph?
A. How to teach history effectively.
B. How to get more people to study history.
C. Some negative reasons for studying history.
D. Some bad historical figures.
35. The main purpose of this passage is to ____________.
A. inspire the parents to teach their children history
B. show the importance of history in politics
C. introduce the writer’s own way of teaching history
D. explain the reasons why children study history

Sharks have been around for hundreds of millions of years. 36 Some sharks live near the surface, some live deep in the water, and other on or near the ocean floor.
We tend to think of sharks as big dangerous creatures. We sometimes read about shark attacks in the newspapers, and in 1975 the film Jaws terrified moviegoers with the story of a great white shark which attack holiday-makers in a small seaside town in the USA.37 It can reach 6 metres in length and up to 2,000 kilograms in weight. It has as many as 3,000 needle sharp teeth, so it can sever (切断)a man’s leg in a single bite.
But not all shark are like the great white.38 There are almost 400 species of sharks and more than half of these under a metre in length. The biggest sharks of all are not at all dangerous to humans. The basking sharks and the whale shark grow to around 12 metres, but they are quite harmless.
39 Of all these the bull shark is the one that is most likely to attack people. It swims in very shallow waters where people swim. 40 Indeed you are far more likely to be killed
by a dog or by bees than by a shark, and some scientists believe that sharks only attack people because they mistake them for their favorite food.
A.The pigmy shark, for example, is only about 20 centimetres in length.
B.Less than one hundred people are attacked by sharks each year.
C.A shark is a large fish considered to be dangerous to humans
D.Only about 25 species(种类)are dangerous to people.
E.The great white is certainly a fearsome creature.
F.We can never imagine such things can happen.
G.They live in oceans and seas all over the world.

My parents tend to making almost all decisions for me. They chose schools and subjects for me. Sometimes even the daily timetables have to be decide by them.
In my opinion, deciding everything for children do not help them but harm them in many ways. Firstly, it will make children lack independence, in which is useless to their development in the long term. Secondly, in many cases parents’ decisions go against children’s personally ideas and interests, which will naturally influence our growth. I do believe to grow to be independent is the natural way for everybody. Parents should give us chances to make our decision. They may help us make choices instead replacing us to make choices.

参考范文
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am Li Hua, a student from Guangming Middle School. When I went to see a friend in the countryside this summer, I was shocked to find a large quantity of farming land deserted.
The reasons are various. firstly, the terrible weather caused the land to become too dry to grow crops, and some of it was finally deserted. Secondly, large pieces of farmland have been polluted by the waste water discarded from the factory nearby. In addition, with the development of cities and towns, many young people are choosing to work in cities instead of taking up farm work.
As we all know, food is of great significance for our human beings’ survival. Therefore, measures should be taken to stop the farmland being deserted any more. Otherwise, we have no land to grow crops on to feed ourselves in the near future。
