Lisa was running late. Lisa, 25, had a lot to do at work, plus visitors on the way: her parents were coming in for Thanksgiving from her hometown. But as she hurried down the subway stairs, she started to feel uncomfortably warm. By the time she got to the platform, Lisa felt weak and tired-maybe it ha dn’t been a good idea to give blood the night before, she thought. She rested herself against a post close to the tracks.
Several yards away, Frank, 43, and his girlfriend, Jennifer, found a spot close to where the front of the train would stop. They were deep in discussion about a house they were thinking of buying.
But when he heard the scream, followed by someone yelling, “Oh, my God, she fell in!” Frank didn’t hesitate. He jumped down to the tracks and ran some 40 feet toward the body lying on the rails. “No! Not you! ” his girlfriend screamed after him.
She was right to be alarmed. By the time Frank reached Lisa, he could feel the tracks shaking and see the light coming. The train was about 20 seconds from the station.
It was hard to lift her. She was just out. But he managed to raise her the four feet to the platform so that bystanders could hold her by the arms and drag her away from the edge. That was where Lisa briefly regained consciousness, felt herself being pulled along the ground, and saw someone else holding her purse.
Lisa thought she’d been robbed. A woman held her hand and a man gave his shirt to help stop the blood pouring from her head. And she tried to talk but she couldn’t, and that was when she realized how much pain she was in.
Police and fire officials soon arrived, and Frank told the story to an officer. Jennifer said her boyfriend was calm on their 40-minute train ride downtown-just as he had been seconds after the rescue, which made her think about her reaction at the time. “I saw th e train coming and I was thinking he was going to die.” she explained.
56. What was the most probable cause for Lisa’s weakness?

D. By dragging her away from the edge.
58. when did Lisa become conscious again?
A. when the train was leaving.
B. after she was back on the platform.
C. after the police and fire officials came.
D. when a man was cleaning the blood from her head.
59. The passage is intended to ________.
A. warn us of the danger in the subway
B. show us how to save people in the subway
C. tell us about a subway rescue
D. report a traffic accident

Surprisingly, no one knows how many children receive education in English hospitals, still less the content or quality of that education. Proper records are just not kept. We know that more than 850,000 children go through hospital each year, and that every child of school age has a legal right to continue to receive education while in
hospital. We also know there is only one hospital teacher to every 1,000 children in hospital.
Little wonder the latest survey concludes that the extent and type of hospital teaching available differ a great deal across the country. It is found that half the hospitals in England which admit children have no teacher.
A further quarter have only a part-time teacher. The special children’s hospitals in major cities do best; general hospitals in the country and holiday areas are worst off. From this survey, one can estimate that fewer than one in five children have some contact with a hospital teacher—and that contact may be as little as two hours a day. Most children interviewed were surprised to find a teacher in hospital at all. They had not been prepared for it by parents or their own school. If there was a teacher they were much more likely to read books and do math or number work; without a teacher they would only play games.
Reasons for hospital teaching range from preventing a child falling behind and maintaining the habit of school to keeping a child occupied, and the latter is often all the teacher can do. The position and influence of many teachers was summed up when parents referred to them as “the library lady” or just “the helper”. Children tend to rely on concerned school friends to keep in touch with school work. Several parents spoke of requests for work being ignored or refused by the school. Once back at school children rarely get extra teaching, and are told to catch up as best as they can.
Many short-stay child-patients catch up quickly. But schools do very little to ease the anxiety about falling behind expressed by many of the children interviewed.
60. Which of the following statements is true?
A. Every child in hospital receives some teaching.
B. Not enough is known about hospital teaching.
C. Hospital teaching is of poor quality.
D. The special children's hospitals are worst off.
61. It can be inferred from the latest survey that ________.
A. hospital teaching across the country is similar
B. each hospital has at least one part-time teacher
C. all hospitals surveyed offer education to children
D. only one-fourth of the hospitals have a full-time teacher
62. In order to catch up with their school work, children in hospital usually turn to ________.
A. hospital teachers
B. schoolmates
C. parents
D. school teachers
63. We can conclude from the passage that the author is ________.
A. unfavorable towards children receiving education in hospitals
B. in favor of the present state of teaching in hospitals
C. unsatisfied with the present state of hospital teaching
D. satisfied with the results of the latest survey
C
Many women write to me confused about why they can’t form close friendships. They try new approaches, put themselves in all the right places, see therapists, and read relevant self-help books. They consider themselves interesting, loyal, kind and friend-worthy people. But for reasons unknown to them, they have a tough time forming intimate relationships. Many admit to not having even one close friend.
A recent study published in the Journal of personality and Social Psychology offers some clues as to how both nature (personality) and nurture (experience) impact our friendships. Researchers at the University of Virginia and University of Toronto, Mississauga studied more than 7,000 American adults between the ages of 20 and 75 over a period of ten years, looking at the number of times these adults moved during childhood. Their study, like prior ones, showed a link between residential mobility and adult well-being: The more times participants moved as children, the poorer the quality of their adult social relationships.
But digging deeper, the researchers found that personality—specifically being introverted or extroverted —could either intensify or buffer the effect of moving to a new town or neighborhood during childhood. The
negative impact of more moves during childhood was far greater for introverts compared to extroverts.
“Moving a lot makes it difficult for people to maintain long-term close relationships,” stated Dr. Sh igehiro Oishi, the first author of the study, in a press release from the American Psychological Association, “This might not be a serious problem for outgoing people who can make friends quickly and easily. Less outgoing people have a harder time making n ew friends.”
Families often have to relocate — across town, across the country, or across the globe. Yet, in many cases, their kids and young adolescents haven’t yet built up a bank of friendships. So the conventional wisdom is to try to minimize moves for the sake of your child, whenever possible , and to move at the end of the academic year.
64. The passage is written mainly to ________.
A. offer advice to women on how to form intimate relationships.
B. explain how nature and nurture impact our friendships.
C. explain how moves during childhood affect children.
D. tell us how to help children make friends.
65. We learn from the fourth paragraph that moves during childhood ________.
A. have a bigger impact on an introverted person compared to extroverts.
B. have no impact on an outgoing person
C. are a big problem for both introverts and extroverts
D. help children better adapt to new environment
66. We can infer from the passage that ________.
A. our friendships are mainly affected by our nurture
B. we can move when children have made a lot of friends
C. the impact of moves will disappear when one reaches adulthood
D. there is some way to minimize the impact of moves during childhood on children
D
“Eat local.” It’s one way to reduce human effect on the plane t. Eating local means to try to buy and consume foods that are grown in places close to home. However, most of the food sold at supermarkets is not locally grown or produced. Trucks and planes deliver these foods from hundreds or thousands of miles away. During the transportation, greenhouse gases are produced, causing global warming. So the shorter the distance your foods must travel, the less the harm is done to the environment.
But how do you get local food if you live in a large city, hundreds of miles away from farms?Environmental health scientist Dickson Despommier and his students came up with the idea of a “vertical farm”.
A vertical farm is a glass-walled structure that could be built as tall as a skyscraper. Since the garden is built upwards, rather than outwards, it requires much less space than an ordinary farm. The world is quickly running out of room for ordinary farming. Vertical farms could be a key to this situation. Despommier imagines a 30-story building with a greenhouse on every floor. The walls of the building would be clear, to allow crops to get as much sunlight as possible. Depending on a city’s water resources, Despommier thinks hydroponic(水培) farming is another method for the vertical farm which needs no soil to grow plants.
Despomm ier says the hydroponic greenhouses would use a system that would use a city’s waste water and fill it with nutritions to make the crops grow. If this method works, it would provide food to a city and save millions of tons of water.
The idea of a vertical farm has attracted the attention of government officials around the world. Scott Stringer, a government official from New York City, thinks the city is suitable for the vertical farming. “Obviously we don’t have much land left for us,” Stringer said. “But the sky is the limit in Manhattan. ”
Despommier admits that there is still a lot of work to do to make vertical farms a reality. “But I think vertical farming is an idea that can work in a big way.” he says.
67. Why are people advised to eat local?
A. Because it means convenience to people.
B. Because it can help people save a lot of money.
C. Because local food has more nutrition.
D. Because it is environmentally friendly.
68. Which is one of the vertical farm’s benefits when compared with ordinary farming?
A. It produces healthier food.
B. It does less harm to the cities.
C. It needs less space of the city.
D. It requires less transport costs.
69. By saying “the sky is the limit in Manhattan”, Stringer means ________.
A. people can make full use of vertical space of Manhattan
B. there is a limit for using empty land in Manhattan
C. the height of buildings in Manhattan is limited
D. Manhattan can spread as far as possible
70. What can we learn about the vertical farming in the passage?
A. No soil is needed to grow plants in a vertical farm.
B. It has solved the problem of the food shortage in a big way.
C. It is a 30-story building with a greenhouse on every floor.
D. Crops are mainly grown in the rainwater in a vertical farm.

For years, researchers have looked into a possible relationship between heat and violence. There are conflicting results over whether there is an actual connection between rising anger and rising temperature, but the murder rate constantly increases during the months of July and August, according to the FBI’s annual crime report.
Many police chiefs say they put more policemen on the streets when the heat rises. “Calls for service always increas e from May, June, July and August,” said New Bedford’s Captain Richard Spiriet. “The longer period of time you have the heat, the worse it is. It’s just the opposite in the winter time.”
Craig Anderson, a professor and specialist in social psychology at Lowa State University, argues the evidence is clear. “As the temperature goes up, people become more uncomfortable. They become easier to get angry,” he said. “That increases the possibility that a small conflict will be interpreted as more major.” Anderson conducted a couple of studies looking at crime rates over the course of several years within the same area to see when most violent crimes occurred. He found that violent crimes were more likely to occur on hot days and hot months -even hot years had higher violent rates than cold years, according to his research.
Other research shows it is not so much the physical climate, but rather the social climate, that causes increased violence. “During the summer months, people stay up later. They talk with their n eighbors. They party with their friends,” said Jack Levin, director of the Brudnick Centre on Violence at Northeastern University. “There are more likely to be large numbers of people interacting, and they are more likely to argue.”
Perhaps the realizatio n that there is a link will help people who are arguing step back and say, “Let’s cool off” -both literally and figuratively.

六、书面表达(25分)
A passenger on a flight become very angry because the air hostess forgot to bring him a cup of water. But finally he was moved by her sincere smiles and service .
Although the air hostess made a mistake because of her busy work, she tried to make up and offered the service sincerely. Therefore, if I were the passenger, I would be moved by the air hostess as well.
I used to meet a waiter like the air hostess. Because of his carelessness, he spilled the soup on a customer. Of course the customer became angry. The waiter realized his fault, apologized to the customer sincerely and finally got the customer’s pardon.
As to me, I believe that we can get pardon or even repay if we treat others sincerely. When others feel that we are sincere enough, they are more willing to forgive or help us.。
