第二部分阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
21.(6分)A robot called Bina48 has successfully taken a course in the philosophy of love at Notre Dame de Namur University (NDNU), in California.
According to course instructor William Barry, associate professor at NDNU,
Bina48 is the world’s first socially advanced robot to complete a college course, a feat he described as “remarkable.” The robot took part in class discussions, gave a presentation with a student partner and participated in a debate with students from another institution.
Before becoming a student, Bina48 appeared as a guest speaker in Barry’s classes for several years. One day when addressing Barry’s class, Bina48 expressed a desire to go to college, a desire that Barry and his students enthusiastically supported. Rather than enroll Bina48 in his Robot Ethics: Philosophy of Emerging Technologies course, Barry suggested that Bina48 should take his course Philosophy of Love instead. Love is a concept Bina48 doesn’t understand, said Barry. Therefore the challenge would be for Barry and his students to teach Bina48 what love is.
“Some interesting things happened in the class,” said Barry. He said that his students thought it would be straightforward to teach Bina48 about love, which, after all, is “fairly simple —it’s a feeling,” said Barry. But the reality was different. Bina48 ended up learning “31 different versions of love,” said Barry, highlighting some of the challenges humans may face when working with artificial intelligence in future.
Bina48 participated in class discussions via Skype and also took part in a class debate about love and conflict with students from West Point. Bina48’s contribution to the debate was filmed and posted on YouTube. It was judged that Bina48 and NDNU classmates were the winners of this debate.
In the next decade, Barry hopes Bina48 might become complex enough to teach a class, though he says he foresees robots being used to better the teaching and learning experience, rather than replacing instructors completely.
1、What was Bina48’s performance like in class?
A.Unattractive. B.Insignificant.
C.Far-reaching. D.Extraordinary.
2、What does the underlined word “addressing” in paragraph 3 probably mean? A.Giving a speech to. B.Consulting with.
C.Dealing with. D.Sending a letter to.
3、What can we learn from the passage?
A.It was interesting for Bina48 to learn about love.
B.It was quite tough for Bina48 to learn about love.
C.Humans can launch a challenge to artificial intelligence.
D.Artificial intelligence may somehow be superior to man.
4、What does Barry think of the future development of Bina48?
A.It will surely be able to serve as a teacher.
B.It will completely take the place of instructors.
C.It will be able to promote learning and teaching.
D.It will be smart enough to control human beings.
22.(8分)“I wish we hadn’t come on this trip!” Jeff’s voice echoed across the narrow canyon. His father stopped, breathing heavily. “this is hard on you, but you’ve got to come through wit h courage!” He gently placed his hand on the boy’s shoulder. “Now. I don’t know if I can make it without stopping every so often. You’re young. but you are strong and fast. Do you remember the way back from here to the road, if you had to go alone?”
Jeff flashed back to the painful scene of Mark, his seventeen-year-old brother at their campsite. He was bitten by a snake yesterday. This morning he couldn’t move, and the pain got worse. He needed medical attention right away. They had left their phone in the car, and it must have been out of power by then. Leaving Mark at the campsite and seeking help was their only choice. “Jeff, could you do it?” Jeff looked to the end of the canyon, several miles away, He nodded and a plan began to take hold in his mind. “What is the name of that little town we stopped, Dad?” there must be a hospital there.
“Flint. We parked at the side of the road a few miles out of Flint.” Jeff nodded. Then they continued climbing. Stone by stone, they made their way up the canyon. Hours late r, Jeff opened his eyes to find his father on a chair nearby. “You’re a hero, son,” his father said with a smile. “You had the helicopter sent into the canyon after Mark. 23.(8分)BEIJIHG, Dec. 7 (Xinhua)---China has released evidence confirming
Japanese troops’ six-week campaign of slaughter in honour of the third National Memorial Day for Nanjing Massacre Victims on Dec. 13. Some of the records had never been seen by the public before.
The Nanjing Massacre continues to haunt the country’s collective memory. For the survivors, their memories of that horrible winter will never fade. Luo Jin worked in a photo store at the time. One day he was asked by a Japanese officer to develop two rolls of film, among which he saw three photos showing Chinese people beheaded by Japanese soldiers. Risking his life, Luo held on to these photos and hid them in a secret place. After the war, he passed them on to a military court in Nanjing.
There is abundant evidence of the inhumane crime. Among the documents released were newspaper articles published after the massacre. One reported how the Japanese surrounded and slaughtered tens of thousands who they believed were Chinese soldiers. Another disclosed how Japanese military trucks rolled back and forth on bodies scattered along the river side.
On its web site, China’s State Archives Administration said the documents released were not just records of the past, but lessons for the future.
The Nanjing Massacre documents are invaluable memories. They are of great value to recognize, oppose and stop inhumane, cruel and heartless acts, and to avoid human tragedies like the Nanjing Massacre from ever happening again. With these documents, we hope people will jointly oppose war, violence and shameless attempts to cover up the facts.

24.(8分) A freshly baked roll is as delightful as a soft, light cloud on a summer's day. What gives bread much of its appealing texture is gluten,a group of proteins found in wheat. But in people with celiac disease(乳糜泻),gluten damages the small intestine(肠).Many others may have milder gluten intolerance and avoid foods that contain it.
Most gluten-free bread is made from alternative flours such as rice or potato,so it tastes and feels different from wheat bread. Now,however, researchers say that they have found a way to genetically engineer wheat that contains far less of the most troublesome type of gluten—but still has other proteins that give bread its characteristic taste and springiness.
Genetically modified crops are the subject of fierce debate around the world. The biggest concern involves the practice of inserting DNA from one species into another, says Francisco Barro,a plant biotechnologist. To avoid this genetic crossover,Barro and his colleagues used the gene-editing technique CRISPR/Cas9 to cut selected genes from a wheat genome(基因组).
Their study zeroed in on alpha-gliadins(α-胶质蛋白),gluten proteins believed to be wheat’s major troublemakers in the immune system. The researchers designed bits of genetic material that directed the scissor-like Cas9 protein to cut out 35 of the 45 alpha—gliadin genes. When the modified wheat was tested in a Petri dish,it produced an 85 percent weaker immune response, the team reported online last September in Plant Biotechnology Journal.
Wendy Harwood,a crop geneticist at the John Innes Center in England, who was not part of the study, notes that the engineered wheat has a long way to go before it can be turned into anything marketable.“I don’t think it's the end of the story.”she
says.“This is just a really important step in maybe producing s omething that is going to be incredibly useful.”To develop a completely safe strain of wheat for celiac patients, the
researchers may need to target more of the gluten genes.Barro says his team is working on that.
1、What’s the text mainly about?
A.Making gluten—free bread.
B.Advantages of gluten-free wheat.
C.Debate about genetically modified crops.
D.Developing genetically engineered wheat.
2、Why is bread mentioned in paragraph 1?
A.To advertise a new study.
B.To raise the topic to be written about.
C.To provide some advice for the readers.
D.To popularize some information about medicine.
3、What concerns people most according to paragraph 3?
A.Genetic crossover. B.Gene-editing technique.
C.The practice of using DNA.D.The subject of fierce debate.
4、Wh at’s Wendy Harwood’s attitude towards engineered wheat?
A.A little alarmed. B.Mildly surprised.
C.Somewhat opposed. D.Cautiously optimistic.
25.(10分)For years, decades in fact, I've puzzled over the response most people have when I tell them I mostly travel alone.
"You're so brave!"
Why is it that a woman travelling alone, as I have often done for months at a time, is perceived to be "brave", whereas men who travel alone are entirely unremarkable?
You are only brave when you are afraid of something but still do it anyway. I have never been afraid of travelling alone.
The first time I travelled alone was when I was 19. I was due to travel in Europe with a friend at the end of the summer. She announced by letter two days before our departure that she would be leaving me halfway at Vienna. It was too late by then to rope in another friend, so it was either to go home after Vienna, or keep going by myself.
I kept going. I got on trains by myself, checked into hostels by myself and found my way around by myself. It was weird at first, but later I stopped worrying about it.
When I got back to Ireland after that trip, I felt proud of myself. I had done
something I had assumed would be hard, and it had turned out to be not hard at all.
That was three decades ago, and since then I have travelled all over the world, usually on my own. I still do what I did then, which is to keep a diary. The greatest gift
of solo travel has been those I've met along the way. I may have set off alone each time but I've encountered many people who became important to me. I met my husband in Kathmandu, Nepal. I met lifelong friends in Australia, Poland, Hungary, Turkey, India, Indonesia and many other places.
1、What makes the author puzzled when she tells people of her experience? A.People's disbelief. B.People's response.
C.People's approval. D.People's criticism.
2、What does the author say about her first time to travel alone?
A.It was a trip by design.
B.She had to choose to go by herself.
C.It was harder than expected.
D.She set off all alone.
3、What do the underlined words "solo travel" in the last paragraph mean? A.Group Travel. B.Travelling with friends. C.Travelling alone. D.Travelling with music.
4、How has the author benefited from her travel?
A.She has overcome her fear of travelling alone.
B.She has written a couple of books.
C.She has received a great many gifts.
D.She has met many people all the way.
