21.(6分)Nelle Harper Lee» better known by her pen name Harper Lee, was an American novelist widely known for To Kill a Mockingbird, published in 1960. Immediately successful, it won the 1961 Pulitzer Prize and has become a classic of modem American literature. In 1991 an organization conducted a survey that made readers identify books that had “made a difference” in their lives. The result? Lee's book trailed only The Bible. Alongside the works of Shakespeare and Twain, this novel remains one of the most widely taught books nationwide, reaching about 70% of American public schools. What makes it such a typical read for young people?
English class is a place where young Americans come to know themselves. In the folds of dusty books, students can make contact with humanity beyond the shallow small talk of the school hallways. Disturbed by hormones (荷尔蒙)and anxiety, teenagers get through school with confusion and frustration. Literature is a safety valve (安全阀)一it promises relief, a place to figure out one's problems and get to know oneself better.
The novel particularly distinguishes itself in this aspect. It speaks in a child's voice without treating its readership as children. Some critics have called it an “impossible” achievement, a children's book penned by a well-educated adult — it's unlikely that a child like Scout could exist in the real world. But that's exactly what makes it such a charming, attractive read for young people. It indicates the consciousness of a
well-educated adult facing difficult realities, but describes it through the light and playful voice of a curious little girl.
Gaby Hick, a third- year student focused on English literature at Brown University, calls it ^one of the first books that kids and young adults read that deals with serious issues 一rape, race, mental issues”. She adds, “The sto ry makes these adult themes accessible because of Scout.” The book’s setting, a small town in Alabama affected by the Great Depression of the 1930s, may appear very different from the experience of
most kids reading it today. But Lee's words make her story feel alive and present.
In 2006, however, critic Thomas Mallon expressed his regret about the book's avoiding complexity in The New Yorker. But her novel makes a great teaching tool for teenagers precisely because its moral view is as clear as that of one of Aesop's Fables. That absence of ambiguity (含糊其辞)in this novel doesn't mean the novel is free of challenging ideas, either. Will Serratelli, another literature student at Brown says, “There aren’t many hard moral questions being asked …but it opens up a ll these other questions that 1 hadn't thought about before. My English teachers always asked, Do you sympathize (同情)with this character? Would you want to hang out with them?’ When you give a kid a book where those questions don't even need to be asked, it forces them to dig deeper.”
Mallon's criticism is accurate in that this novel may present too limited a view of racism in America. That's especially problematic because it is one of the only books consistently assigned to American students that acknowledges (承认)racial discrimination (歧视)at all. However, To Kill a Mockingbird may owe some of its popularity as a teaching text to the fact that the narrative voice is a white one. Naomi Vamis, an African Studies student at Brown says, “It's another practice of telling stories about black people through white central characters,” she says.
While the novel is undoubtedly worth its place in the classroom, English teachers may do well to consider that it is a white author's perspective — and ought to be the only beginning of a dialogue about race and never the final word. But as a gateway to more mature ideas, and as a YA(young adult) distillation (提炼)of complex concepts young people may not have grasped before, Lee's novel is invaluable.

23.(8分)When American soldiers return home from war with disabilities, they often suffer twice—first from their combat injuries, next from the humiliation(羞辱)of government dependency.
Wounded veterans(老兵)learn they have two basic choices: They can receive almost $ 3 ,000 a month in disability benefits along with medical care and access to other various welfare programs, or they can try to find a job. Especially in this economy, it’s no wonder that many find that first option hard to turn down.
Mark Duggan, an economics professor at Stanford University, reports that enrollment in the U. S. veterans’ disability programs rose from 2.3 million in 2001 to 3.9 million in 2014. The percentage of veterans receiving benefits doubled, from 8.9% in 2001 to 18% in 2014. Disability services for veterans now consume $59 billion.
In the 1980s and 1990s, male veterans were more likely to be in the labor force than nonveterans. But since 2000, that has changed dramatically. Now there is a 4% gap between veteran and non-veteran labor participation, with veteran participation lower.
Navy SEAL Eric Greitens, the founder of The Mission Continues, explains how soldiers who served their country are transformed into welfare receivers who live off their country.
“When veterans come home from war they are going through a tremendous change in identity, ” he says. “Then the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, and others, encourage them to view themselves as disabled.” By the time they come to Greitens’ non-profit organization, “We meet a number of veterans who see themselves
as charity cases and are not sure anymore what they have to contribute.”
There are also more practical factors driving the disability boom. One is the expansion of qualification criteria. In 2000, for instance, type 2 diabetes was added as a disability because of evidence linking exposure to Agent Orange with the onset of the disease. Heart disease has also been added to the list.
Another possible factor is that younger veterans seem less against welfare than their parents’ generation. Veterans who have served since the 1990s are much more likely to sign up for disability than their older counterparts; 1 in 4 younger veterans is on disability, versus just 1 in 7 of those over age 54.
We shouldn’t go back to the bad old days when veterans were afraid to admit weakness. But Lt. Col. Daniel Gade is one of many veterans who think our disability system is harmful, psychologically, to former soldiers. Gade lost his leg in combat in 2005 and now teaches at West Point. He recently gave a talk to disabled veterans at Ft. Carson, in which he urged them to rejoin the workforce.
“People who stay home because they are getting paid enough to get by on disability are worse off,” he warned. “They are more likely to abuse drugs and alcohol. They are more likely to live alone.”
What a waste of human potential, especially since most veterans on disability still have their prime working years ahead of them when they’re disc harged(遣退).
We could solve this problem by changing the way we view-and label-veterans with disabilities. As Gade noted in a recent article, “Veterans should be viewed as resources, not as damaged goods.” He recommended that “efforts to help veterans shoul d begin by recognizing their abilities rather than focusing only on then disabilities, and should serve the ultimate aim of moving wounded soldiers to real self-sufficiency.”
On a more practical note, the United States Department of Veterans Affairs could reallocate(再分配)resources to spend more on job training and less on disability. Current placement programs are sadly inadequate.
We are good at sending soldiers off to war. Yet when these young men and women return home, they are essentially told, “We’ll gi ve you enough for a reasonably comfortable life, but we won’t help you find a job.”
It is unreasonable that we are condemning thousands of young veterans who served their country to life on the dole(失业救济金)rather than enabling them to re-enter the
workforce with the necessary accommodations.
1、What do more and more wounded veterans appear to do nowadays?
A.Depend on the government for a living.
B.Be treated badly in most workplaces.
C.Ask the government for more dole.

A.By listing figures. B.By giving examples.
C.By performing experiments. D.By analyzing cause and effect.
3、What did veterans use to do in the 1980s and 1990s?
A.Refuse to find jobs. B.Be a main labor resource.
C.Have much trouble finding jobs. D.Receive many disability benefits.
4、One of the reasons why there are more disabled veterans is that . A.damage from the war is greater than ever
B.veterans have suffered much more than ever
C.the scale of disabilities has been broadened
D.older veterans aren’t afraid to admit their disability
5、In Cade’s opinion, the veterans who receive welfare from the government tend to
_______.
A.save more trouble for the government
B.lead a miserable and unhappy life
C.increasingly depend on the government
D.suffer the humiliation of their combat injuries
24.(8分)If you are travelling from one of London’s international airports to central London, don’t take taxi unless you are very rich! The minimum (最小的) fare from Heathrow, the airport nearest to central London, is about $25. If you are travelling in a group of four people and each of you has a lot of luggage, you may feel that it would be worth paying for a taxi.
If you simply want to cross London from one railway station to another or from a station to your hotel, then a taxi may be a good idea. Although taxis may seem quite expensive, they make life a lot easier if you have a lot of luggage, or if you are not confident about finding your way around the Underground system. Here are some
useful facts about using taxis:
★ Licensed (有许可证的) taxis are large, and usually black, vehicles with a small white plate (牌照) on the back showing a license number and the words Hackney Carriages.
★ The best place to find a taxi is at a railway station. Follow the signs for taxi and you will find what is called a taxi rank (a place in the road where a taxi can stop). Another good place to find a taxi is near a large hotel.
★ If you are not at a station, you will have to stand in the street and wait for one to go past. Look for a taxi which has an orange light lit up over the drive r’s window — this means that it is not being used by anyone else.
★ When the taxi is quite close, raise your arm and wave the driver down. The taxi should stop for you.
★ When you pay, it is usual to give the driver a tip of at least 10%.
1、What does the author say about the taxi in London?
A.It is hard to catch a taxi at the airport.
B.It is a good choice to cross London.
C.Its service is far from satisfactory.
D.Its fare is not very high.
2、Which of the following is TRUE about the licensed taxis?
A.They are small.
B.They are all orange.
C.They have red plates.
D.Their plates are on the back.
3、Where can you find a taxi easily according to the author?
A.A bus stop.
B.A small hotel.
C.A large shopping centre.
D.A taxi rank near a railway station.
4、What should you take note of if you want to stop a taxi?
A.Whether its light is on.
B.Whether the driver is waving.
C.Whether it is a white licensed taxi.
D.Whether the taxi stops at the right place.
5、If your taxi fare is $30, how much should you give the tip to the driver at least? A.$2. B.$3.
C.$4. D.$5.
25.(10分)The Mokoko tribe (部落) lived on the wrong side of the island of two faces. The two sides, separated by a great cliff (悬崖), were like night and day. The good side was watered by rivers and was filled with trees and abundant food, while on the wrong side there was hardly any water or plants, and wild beasts crowded together. The Mokoko had the misfortune of having always lived there, with no way to cross to the other side. Their life was hard and they lived in permanent terror of the beasts.
Along the edge of the cliff separating the two sides, a skinny but strong tree grew, with which they could build two poles. There was no doubt that the tribe would choose the great chief and doctor to use the poles. But when the two of them were given their chance to make the jump, they didn’t dare to. They thought that the pole could break or it would not be long enough. They put so much energy into these thoughts that they gave in.
But into that tribe were born Nam and Ariki, a pair of young hearts. One day, they decided to take up the poles. Nobody stopped them, but everyone did try to discourage them, trying to present how dangerous the jumping was, using a thousand explanations.
“And what if what they say is true?” wond ered the young Naru.
“Don’t worry. I am a bit scared too, but it doesn’t look so difficult,” replied Ariki, ever determined.
“But if it goes wrong, it will be a terrible end,” continued Naru, undecided.
“Perhaps the jump will go badly. But staying forever on this side of the island surely won’t work out well either.”
“You’re right. Let’s do it tomorrow.”
And on the next day, Naru and Ariki jumped to the good side of the island. When taking up the poles, while feeling their desire, the fear hardly allowed them to breathe. And while flying through the air, helpless and without support, they felt that something must have gone wrong and death awaited them. But when they landed on the other side, they thought the jump really hadn’t been so bad after all.
1、What situation were the Mokoko faced with?
A.They lived a difficult life without fearing the beasts.
B.They suffered a lot due to the terrible environment.
C.They had easy access to the good side.
D.They were surrounded by trees and rivers.
2、How did the chief and doctor feel when they were chosen?
A.Frightened. B.Energetic.
C.Desperate. D.Satisfied.
3、What’s the tribe members’ reaction when Nam and Ariki decided to take up the poles?
A.The members desired to follow their steps.
B.The members tried to prevent the behaviour.
C.The members convinced them of the danger.
D.The members encouraged them to have a try.
4、What can we infer about Naru and Ariki?
A.They overcame difficulty with courage and determination.
B.They felt relaxed in the whole process of making the jump.
C.They never doubted the difficulty in making the jump.
D.They hesitated to make the jump over and over again.

Knowing that you are interested in a traditional Chinese festival, which is called Dragon Boat Festival by Chinese, I am writing to introduce it to you.
The dragon boat festival falls on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month in honor of the great poet, Qu Yuan. As is known to us, in order to warn the king, Qu yuan sacrifice his life to jump into the Miluo river. People were touched by his behavior and set the day he
died as a festival to show honor to him. On that day, we often eat rice-dumplings and drink a special wine. Besides, what should be stressed is the dragon-boat racing, which is very interesting and exciting.people gather on the both sides of the river to watch the participators spare no effort to make for the finishing line.
The dragon boat festivals approaching. Would you like to join us to spend it? Looking forward to your coming.
