—Welcome to the unit & V ocabulary
Teaching aims:
1.To introduce the topic of disasters
2.To identify weather conditions and label pictures with correct words
3.To identify vocabulary related to the topic
Teaching procedures:
Step 1:
Lead-in Questions:
a) What is the weather like today?
b) What was the weather like yesterday?
c) What will it be like tomorrow?
d) What kind of weather do you like best? Why?
Step 2:
Show the Picture of the weather condition. Go through the pictures one by one. First revise the words that have been taught. e.g. rain→rainy, snow→snowy. Then help the Ss to learn the new words about the weather conditions. Ss finish Part A on Page 98 at the same time. After that, get the Ss to find the rule: We can put a ‘y〞after Noun. to change it to Adjective.
Then finish Part B on Page 93
Step 3:
Ss listen to the tape and answer the following questions:
1. What’s the weather like?
2. What happened to Hobo?
3. What was Hobo doing when it started to rain?
4. When did Hobo hear the rain?
5. What happened to Hobo’s house?
6. Why doesn’t he want to go home alone?
After that, Ss need to fill in the blanks according to the conversation.
Step 4:
Introduce some more weather conditions to the Ss and teach them how to make a weather forecast by finishing Part B on Page 98.
Ss work in pairs and practice making a weather forecast.
Choose some students to act as announcers of weather forecast.
Step 5:
Focus on the topic of the unit. Tell the Ss: Bad weather sometimes causes natural disasters. Show the pictures about some natural disasters. Ask Ss to describe some of them. Then teach the new words and help Ss to understand and pronounce correctly.
➢Earthquake: A sudden violent movement of the earth’s surface
➢Flood: A large amount of water covering an area that is usually dry
➢Drought: A long period without rain
➢Hurricane: A violent storm with very strong winds
➢Landslide: The sudden fall of a mass of earth or rocks, down the side of a mountain
➢Tsunami: A very large ocean wave caused by an underwater earthquake
Then give some hints of natural disasters to Ss and encourage them to play a guessing game.
Step 6:
Encourage Ss to tell the difference between an accident and a natural disaster ➢An accident is usually caused by people.
➢ A natural disaster is a very bad accident caused by natural forces. It usually causes great damage or loss of life.
Then finish Part A on Page 93.
Step 7:
Role Play—An interview
➢Four in one group
➢Choose any topic you are interested in to start an interview
1. two are the survivors or witnesses (who saw the accident when it happened) of the natural disaster
2. one is the journalist from China Daily
3. one is the news reporter from CCTV International
➢Be sure to make every detail clearly when you make the interview, e.g. time, place, damage
Choose some groups to give the presentation
Homework:
➢Copy and review the new words and expressions
➢Preview the reading text
