To break up stereotypes
Some experts define history as the recorded past, that is , that part of human life which has left some sort of record such as folk tales ,artifacts, or written documents. Most of us perceive history as something simple and fixed. However, as the wheels of history run over , history unveils her veils deeper and deeper. So history refects not only “validity”but also variety in the light of increasing knowledge and reason. That is why we feel more confused with a higher education and knowledge.
It occurs to me that our thought is influenced by such history and gradually we develop our own fixed idea about things around us, to some extent, which is subjective and emotional ,not objective and rational. How did our fixed ideas develop? As the result of the sediment of traditional things, our beliefs formed. Chinese people believe in Confucianism. People with traditional views, especially the old people, think that women is born to do housework and raise children. It stands to reason that wife is submissive to husband as daughter is obedient to parents, which is the traditional stereotype of women. Such stereotype also adapts to the impressions on Americans. Some people may assert that all Americans are individualism and are gifted at innovating new things. The reason why they think so is that they are lack of a clear and comprehensive knowledge of American history and culture.
The stereotype we have developed during a long time influence us a
great deal. We become afraid to negate tradition, dare not to deny the authority, do not want to make a change ,fear of change. Human is a thoughtful reed, we can not keep a absolutely rational mind all the time ,neither is it possible to abandon the most primitive emotional impulses. However, for a nation , no rational mind will bring disaster. During the culture revolution, the tide of exaggerating quantities of production and denouncing and insulting the educated incurred the huge loss in terms of culture ,economy and politics, which made our society stagnant even retrogressive for a long time. Blind imitation ,no questioning or innovation will always cause disasters. Policymaker need to desert the stereotype, such can contribute to the benign development of the whole team. For individuals, rational thinking and critical thinking are also of benefit. When we encounter difficulties, calm, rational thinking will help solve the problem. For a nation’s consciousness and personal improvement,all we need is to break the fixed pattern of thinking and learn to enhance personal qualities.
Innovation need cultivate the spirit of questioning and deliberatively thinking, inherit and develop from the older generation in cultural, political and economical aspects, view the world around us with rational mind.。
