I had to feed them every morning and then I had to walk to school with my little sister. It was two miles to school and two miles back in the evening. But it always seemed longer in the morning when we were going to school. There was a bus, but we didn't have the money. And we had to go to bed at seven o'clock every night. We couldn't watch TV because there wasn't any. On Sundays we had to go to the church three times-morning, afternoon and evening. And we couldn't play outside on Sundays. But it wasn't all bad. We had some good times. We could go to out and our parents didn't have to worry about us. There weren't so many cars on the roads then. So the streets were safe to play in. And there were not many robbers and thieves in those days. We had to work hard and we weren't able buy all those things in the shops today. Life was hard. But it was simple and people were happier. Three men got to Dover station a few minutes after nine o'clock one evening. They asked a guard, "What time is the next train for London?"
The guard said, "You've just missed one. A train goes every hour. The next one is at ten o'clock." "That's all right," they said, "We'll go and have a drink." So off they went to a bar (酒吧间).
A minute or two after ten o'clock they came running and asked the guard, "Has the train gone?" "Yes," the guard said. "It went at ten, as I told you. The next one is at eleven o' clock." "That's all right," they said again. "We'll go and have another drink." So they went back to the bar.
They missed the eleven o' clock train in the same way. Then the guard said, "Now, the next train is the last one. If you miss that train, you won't get to London tonight."
Twelve o'clock came, and the last train was just starting out when the three of them came out of the bar running as fast as they could. Two of them got in the train just as it was leaving, but the third one didn't run fast enough, and the train went out leaving him behind. He stood there looking at the train and laughing, as if (好像) to miss a train was the best joke in the world. The guard went up to him and said, "I told you that this was the last train. "Yes, I did."

One night, a little before nine o'clock, Dr Johnson was answering a telephone call. He was asked to go and give an operation to a very sick boy at once. The boy was in a small hospital in Glens Falls, sixty miles away from Dr Johnson's city--Albany. The boy had hurt himself in a traffic accident. His life was in danger, but his family was so poor that they could not pay the doctor anything. After he heard all this, Dr Johnson was driving carefully. He thought that he could get to the hospital before 12 o'clock. A few minutes later, the doctor's car had to stop for a red light at a crossing. Suddenly a man in an old black coat opened the door of the car and got in.
"Drive on", he said. "I've got a gun (枪)."
"I'm a doctor," said Johnson. "I'm on my way to a hospital to operate on a very sick..." "Don't talk," said the man in the old black coat. "Just drive."
A mile out of the town he ordered the doctor to stop the car and get out. Then the man drove on down the road. The doctor stood for a moment in the snow. A half hour, Dr Johnson found a telephone and called a taxi (出租车). At the railway (铁路) station he learned that the next train to Glens Falls would not leave until 12 o'clock.
It was after two o'clock in the morning when the doctor arrived at the hospital in Glens Falls. Miss Clarke, a nurse, was waiting for him.
"I did my best," said Dr Johnson. Miss Clarke said. "The boy died an hour ago."
They walked into the waiting room. There sat the man in the old black coat, with his head in his hands.

Any physical theory is always provisional, in the sense that it is only a hypothesis: you can never prove in. No matter how many times the results of experiments agree with some theory, you can never be sure that the next time the result will not contradict the theory. On the other hand, you can disprove a theory by finding even a single observation that disagrees with the predictions of the theory. As philosopher of science Karl Popper has emphasized, a good theory is characterized by the fact that it makes a number of predictions that could in principle be disproved or falsified by observation. Each time new experiments are observed to agree with the predictions the theory survives, and our confidence in it is increased; but if ever a new observation is found to disagree, we have to abandon or modify the theory. At least that is what is supposed to happen, but you can always question the competence of the person who carried out the observation.
In practice, what often happens is that a new theory is devised that is really an extension of the previous theory. For example, very accurate observations of the planet Mercury revealed a small difference between its motion and the predictions of Newton's theory of gravity. Einstein's general theory of relativity predicted a slightly different motion from Newton's theory. The fact that Einstein's predictions matched what was seen, while Newton's did not, was one of the crucial confirmations of the new theory. However, we still use Newton's theory for all practical purposes because the difference between its predictions and those of general relativity is very small in the situations that we normally deal with. (Newton's theory also has the great advantage that it is much simpler to work with than Einstein's!)

If it were only necessary to decide whether to teach elementary science to everyone on a mass basis or to find the gifted few and take them as far as they can go, our task would be fairly simple. The public school system, however, has no such choice, for the two jobs must be carried on at the same time. Because we depend so heavily upon science and technology for our progress, we must produce specialists in many fields. Because we live in a democratic nation, whose citizens make the policies for the nation, large numbers of us must be educated to understand, to support, and when necessary, to judge the work of experts. The public school must educate both producers and users of scientific services.
In education there should be a good balance among the branches of knowledge that contribute to effective thinking and wise judgement. Such balance is defeated by too much emphasis on any one field. This question of balance involves not only the relation of the natural sciences, the social sciences, and the arts but also relative emphasis among the natural sciences themselves. Similarly, we must have a balance between the current and classical knowledge. The attention of the public is continually drawn to new possibilities in scientific fields and the discovery of new knowledge; these should not be allowed to turn our attention away from the sound, established materials that form the basis of courses for beginners.

Water on the earth is being continuously recycled in a process known as the hydrologic cycle. The first step of the cycle is the evaporation of water in the oceans. Evaporation is the process of water turning into vapor, which then forms clouds in the sky. The second step is the water returning to the earth in the form of precipitation, either rain, snow, or ice. When the water reaches the earth's surface, it runs off into the rivers, lakes, and the ocean, where the cycle begins again.
Not all water, however, stays on the surface of the earth in the hydrologic cycle. Some of it seeps (渗透) into the ground through infiltration and collects under the earth's surface as groundwater. This groundwater is extremely important to life on earth since 95% of the earth's water is in the oceans, and is too salty for humans of plants. Of the 5% on land, only 0.05% is above ground in rivers or lakes. The rest is underground water. This groundwater is plentiful and dependable, as it doesn't depend on seasonal rain or snow. It is the major source of water for many cities. But as the population increases and the need for water also increases, the groundwater in some areas is getting dangerously low. Added to this problem is an increasing amount of pollution that seeps into the groundwater. In the future, with an increasing population and more toxic(有毒的)waste, the hydrologic cycle we depend on could become dangerously imbalanced.

Dear Sirs:
In the fall of 2005 I bought a Jones Typewriter, Portable Special Sample, at ABC store in Springfield. I had used it only a few days when the space bar broke.
We took it to a local repair shop; they told us that it was a factory defect and suggested that we take it to ABC. ABC accepted the machine and sent the part in. We waited three months, and since your company did not send a replacement, they let us have the space bar from another typewriter.
Now, six months later, it has broken again. We took it back to ABC. They are no longer carrying your typewriter, but they assured us that the guarantee is still good and suggested that we write you for further instructions as to what steps to take.
The guarantee was registered in my name at the address below: 205 Elm Road, Spring-field, KS 78901 I will appreciate anything you can do to help us on this matter.
Respectfully
James Christopher)
