English:
The Spring Festival, also known as Chinese New Year, is a time-honored tradition in China and is the most important festival for the Chinese people. One of the most popular stories associated with the Spring Festival is the legend of Nian, a terrifying monster that would come out on the eve of the New Year to eat livestock, crops, and even villagers. To protect themselves, the villagers would put up red decorations, set off fireworks, and make loud noises to scare Nian away. This tradition has evolved into what we now see as the festive customs of the Spring Festival, such as the hanging of red lanterns, the giving of red envelopes filled with money, and the loud fireworks displays. Another famous story is the story of the Kitchen God. According to the legend, the Kitchen God would go to heaven to report on the behavior of the family he presided over. Families would bribe the Kitchen God with sweet treats in the hopes that he would speak favorably on their behalf. These stories and legends contribute to the rich tapestry of traditions and customs that make the Spring Festival such a special time for the Chinese people.
