13、Jack thought himself a basketball fan. He watched quite a lot of American NBA basketball games. Not only did he watch them, he spent much of his free time playing on the court too. Then came the final year of his middle school. All of his regular teammates stopped showing up on the court because they were simply too busy preparing for the high school entrance exam to play. He was, of course, under much stress himself, like everyone else. A good exam result meant a good high school; a mediocre(平庸的)score meant a mediocre school._________ However, he loved basketball so much that he still found time to play, this time with a group of guys who were said to have skipped classes(逃课)before.
Some of his teachers started worrying about him. They asked his mother to go to school to let her know that Jack was hanging out with problem kids. When his mother returned home that day, she wanted to talk to Jack. Knowing the purpose of her visit to the school, Jack thought his mother would punish him for befriending those bad guys. To his surprise, his mother was not angry with him at all. She wanted to hear her son's side of the story. So Jack told his mother about what he knew of Simon and Peter. Simon's parents were badly ill; Peter's father had lost his job. They both seemed to Jack to be normal kids. Jack's mother thought for a moment, then went on to say that she was OK with her son playing with them and that she and her son should think of ways to help these kids. Soon Jack's mum introduced some part-time jobs to Simon and Peter, which they accepted. She believed in her son and cared about those who were less lucky.
Jack's basketball friends and he have left for different places, but they still keep in touch. He knows Peter is now a manager of a local bank. Simon is currently a freshman at a university. Sadly, it is impossible to get together to play basketball again, but whenever they get on the phone, they talk about it all the time.

15、A baby carrier is like a backpack for carrying a baby. Ann Moore introduced the idea of a baby carrier to American people nearly 50 years ago.
Ann spent two years in Africa in the early 1960s. She worked as a nurse there. Ann saw babies wrapped in bright cloth tied to their mothers’ backs. The babies snuggled (依偎) close to their mothers, and the mothers could use their hands to do other things.
In 1964, Ann had her own baby. She tried making a carrier like the one African mothers used. The carrier was like a backpack. Everywhere Ann went with her baby in the carrier, people asked, “Where can I buy one?” In 1965, Ann and her mother began to sell handmade carriers. Ann received a patent (专利) for the baby carrier in 1969. By that time, the baby carrier had leg holes and straps (带子) that could be made longer or shorter. It could also be worn on the back or front.
By 1979, the baby carriers were made in a factory. These baby carriers cost less to make and more than 25,000 were sold every month.
When Ann made her first baby carrier, she just wanted to keep her baby close and still have her hands free to do other things. Now all over the world babies ride in baby carriers, close to their parents, safe and happy.

“Maybe he goes to another school, not Arkwright,” said Mum. “I heard some mothers talking about him in the supermarket today. He sounds awful. He's damaged property(财产) and he's stolen things. They think he's the mugger(抢劫犯) on all those posters.”
Tim didn't want to eat his jam sandwich any more.
“What else did they say?” said Tim.
“They blamed(责备) it on his parents,” she said. “They must be doing something wrong. I agree with them.” She glanced at Tim. “Are you all right, darling? You look a bit pale.”

On a sunny day of September, I sat with my friend in a well-known coffee shop in a neighboring town. As we enjoyed our coffee, a young man wearing glasses entered and sat at an empty table beside us. He called the waiter and placed his order, saying, “Two cups of coffee, one of them there on the wall.” We heard this order with rather interest and found that he was served with only one cup of coffee but he paid for two. When he left, the waiter put a piece of paper on the wall, saying “A Cup of Coffee”.
While we were still there, two other middle-aged men entered and ordered three cups of coffee, two on the table and one on the wall. They had two cups of coffee but paid for three and left. This time also, the waiter did the same. He put a piece of paper on the wall saying, “A Cup of Coffee.” It was something special and perplexing for us. We finished our coffee, paid the bill and left.
After a few days, we had a chance to go to this coffee shop again. While we were enjoying our coffee, a poorly-dressed
man arrived at the shop. As he seated himself, he looked at the wall and said, “One cup of coffee from the wall.” The waiter served coffee to this man as usual. The man had his coffee and left without paying.
We were amazed to watch all this, as the waiter took off a piece of paper from the wall and threw it into the dustbin. Now it was no surprise for us — what was happening was very clear. The great respect for the men in need shown by the residents(居民) of this town made our eyes in tears.
1.How many cups of coffee did the young man drink?
A.One. B.Two. C.Three.
2.Where did the waiter put the paper?
A.In the cup. B.On the wall. C.At the table.
3.What does the underlined word “perplexing” probably mean?
A.慈善的B.有趣的C.困惑的
4.According to the passage, who paid for the coffee of the poorly-dressed man?
A.The man himself. B.The waiter. C.Other customers.
5.What can we infer from the passage?
A.The residents in this town were kind to the poor.
B.The coffee shop could still make money when poor men drank coffee for free.
C.The paper on the wall that says “A Cup of Coffee” could be made into coffee.

Good afternoon,everyone!
Today I’d like to share my ideas of “Being a Good Listener” with you.
Good listening can always show respect and build good relationships with people.
Parents should listen to their children,so they will understand them better and trust each other. Teachers should also listen to their students so that they can increase their understanding and improve relationships. Students should listen to their classmates, then their friendship will be increased and they will help each other.
We’d better be patient while listening. Don’t forget to keep silent while listening. In a word, good listening can really make us get closer to each other.
Thank you for your listening!。
