In 1994, the distance learning organization CALCampus introduced the first entirely online curriculum. Following CALCampus's lead, more and more colleges and universities began forming their own online education programs.
Online-education
What is online education ?
Online education is a type of distance learning--taking courses without attending a brick-and-mortar school or university. Instead, online students and teachers interact over the Internet. To meet the definition of online education, according to education expert Dr. Sabri Bebawi, a course of study must offer two-way communication between teacher and learner and fall under the oversight of an educational institution.
The development
From the mid 1990s through the early 2000s, computer technology and the Internet grew by leaps and bounds. New forms of multimedia changed the way we use the Internet in order to communicate. Because of this, online education has become much more efficient and even more accessible.
Hale Waihona Puke TypesOnline education is “synchronous(同步)” if the teacher and student have some direct, simultaneous(同时的) contact. For instance, a teacher might meet with students in a chat forum for a discussion. Another example of synchronous distance learning is a teacher delivering a lecture at a scheduled time while students watch it simultaneously via a webcam(摄像头).
In this day and age, online education allows students to access information and their instructors in a variety of different ways. Not only do they have access to text-based lessons, but also to images and videos that can be uploaded by the instructor. It‘s even possible to set up virtual classrooms where the instructor communicates with his or her class in real time by using a live feed webcam. Also, assignments can be done and submitted(提交) online, bypassing (绕过) the need to print or mail anything.
The history
Online education got its start in the corporate world. In the 1980s, companies started using computer-based programs to train new employees, but this practice was severely limited due to the technology of the time. It wasn't until the invention of the Internet that this practice began to grow in efficiency. Using the Internet, companies could train new employees who lived in in remote locations, and also chat with them online in order to answer any questions. As companies expanded this process, they found it cut costs: they didn't have to hire as many trainers because most employees were trained online.
