TED TALK

Email: jiwei6048@Let’s talk about manias. Let’s start with Beatle mania: hysterical teenagers, crying, screaming, pandemonium. Sports mania: deafening crowds, all for one idea—get the ball in the net. Okay, religious mania: there’s rapture, there’s weeping, there’s visions. Manias can be good. Manias can be alarming. Or Manias can be deadly. The word has a new mania. A mania for learning English. Listen as Chinese students practice their English by screaming it. T: I will change my life !S:I will change my life. T: I don’t want to let my parents down. S: I don’t want to let my parents down. T:I don’t ever want to let my country down. S: I don’t ever want to let my country down. T: Most importantly, S: Most importantly, T: I don’t want to let myself down. S: I don’t want to let myself down. How many people are trying to learn English worldwide? Two billion of them. S: A t-shirt, a dress…In Latin America, in India, in Southeast Asia, and most of all in China. If you are a Chinese student, you start learning English in the third grade, by law. That’s why this year China will become the word’s largest English speaking country. Why English? In a single word: Opportunity. Opportunity for a better life, a job,to be able to pay for school, or put better food on the table. Imagine a student taking a giant test for three full days. Her score on this one test literally determines her future. She studies 12 hours a day for three years to prepare, 25 percent of her grade is based on English. It’s called the Gaokao, and 80 million high school Chinese students have already taken this grueling test. The intensity to learn English is almost unimaginable, unless you witness it. T: Perfect! S: Perfect! T: Perfect! S: Perfect! T: I want to speak perfect English. S: I want to speak perfect English. T: I want to speak…S: I want to speak…T: Perfect English. S: Perfect English. T: I want to change my life! S: I want to change my life!So is English mania good or bad?Is English a tsunami, washing away other languages? Not likely. English is the word’s second language. Your native language is your life. But with English you can become part of a wider conversation:a global conversation about global problems, like climate change or poverty, or hunger or disease. The word has other universal languages. Mathematics is the language of science. Music is the language of emotions. And now English is becoming the language of problem—solving. Not because America is pushing it, but because the world is pulling it. So,English mania is a turning point, like the harnessing of electricity in our cities or the fall of the Berlin Wall.English represents hope for a better future, a future where the world has a common language to solve its common problem. Thank you very much!

In recent years, the phenomenon of English fever in China has been on the rise, with an increasing number of people, especially the younger generation, showing a keen interest in learning English. This trend is not only reflected in the high demand for English education but also in the widespread use of English in various aspects ofdaily life. In this article, I will explore the reasons behind this English fever, its impact on Chinese society, and my personal views on this trend.**一、中国英语热的原因**The reasons for the rise of English fever in China are diverse and complex. Firstly, English has become an essential tool for international communication and cooperation. With China's increasing integration into the global economy, the ability to communicate effectively in English has become a prerequisite for success in many industries, including business, technology, and entertainment.Secondly, the education system in China places a strong emphasis on English learning. English is a compulsory subject in primary and secondary schools, and students are required to pass English exams to gain access to higher education institutions. This focus on English education has created a culture of English learning from a young age, fostering a strong foundation for future proficiency.Lastly, the influence of Western culture and media has also contributed to the popularity of English in China. Movies, music, and other forms of entertainment from the West are widely popular among young people, and many of them are eager to learn English to better understand and appreciate this culture.**二、中国英语热的影响**The rise of English fever in China has had bothpositive and negative impacts on society. On the positive side, the widespread use of English has facilitated international communication and cooperation, boosting China's economic growth and cultural exchange with the rest of the world. Additionally, the improved Englishproficiency of the Chinese workforce has made them more competitive in the global job market. However, there are also some negative impacts of English fever. Firstly, the overemphasis on English learning can sometimes lead to neglect of other subjects and cultures, potentially stunting students' overall intellectual development. Secondly, the pressure to achieve high scores in English exams can cause significant stress and anxiety for students, affecting their mental health and well-being.**三、我的见解**In my opinion, while English is an important tool for international communication and cooperation, it should not be the sole focus of education. It is crucial to maintain a balanced approach that promotes the development ofstudents' skills and knowledge in a variety of subjects, including their mother tongue and local culture.Furthermore, we should also recognize that English proficiency is not the sole determinant of success in life. Other factors such as creativity, critical thinking, and interpersonal skills are equally important. Therefore, weshould aim to cultivate a diverse and well-roundedworkforce that is equipped with a range of skills and competencies. Finally, it is essential to address the issue of stress and anxiety caused by the overemphasis on English learning. We need to create a more supportive and inclusive education environment that fosters positive learning experiences and promotes the overall well-being of students. In conclusion, while the rise of English fever in China has brought about positive changes in some aspects, we need to be mindful of its potential negative impacts. It is crucial to strike a balance between promoting English learning and fostering a diverse and well-rounded education system that benefits students in all aspects of their lives.

In recent years, the fervor for English learning in China has surged, reflecting a nation's embrace of globalization. Students of all ages are immersed in the language, from the youngest learners to the most seasoned scholars. This trend is not just a cultural phenomenon; it's an economic necessity. English is the global lingua franca, and proficiency in it opens doors to international opportunities, from higher education to multinational corporations. The government's support for English education is evident in the curriculum, where it is a mandatory subject from primary school onwards. This policy has led to a widespread focus on English, with classrooms buzzing with the sounds of young voices practicing pronunciation and grammar. However, the English craze also sparks debate. Critics argue that it overshadows the importance of native language and cultural identity. They believe that while English is valuable, it should not come at the expense of one's mother tongue. On the other hand, proponents of the English wave see it as a bridge to the future. They argue that in an increasingly interconnected world, the ability to communicate in Englishis not just beneficial but essential for personal andnational growth. The integration of technology has also played a significant role in this movement. Apps, online courses, and virtual tutors have made learning English more accessible and engaging for Chinese students.Despite the challenges, the English learning wave in China shows no signs of slowing down. It has become a testament to the country's commitment to progress and its willingness to adapt to the global stage. In conclusion, the English craze in China is a multifaceted issue that touches on education, economics, and culture. It is a reflection of the country's aspirations to be a major player in the global arena, and it will undoubtedly continue to shape the future of its people.。

The Rise of English Fever in China: AMultifaceted PhenomenonIn recent years, the phenomenon of English fever has swept across China, manifesting itself in various aspects of society. From the classrooms of primary schools to the bustling streets of major cities, the language of Shakespeare and the Brontës has become a ubiquitous presence, a testament to the growing importance of English in China. This essay aims to delve into the reasons behind this English fever, its impact on Chinese society, and my personal perspective on this linguistic trend. The rise of English fever in China can be attributed to several factors. Firstly, the globalization of the economy has made English a prerequisite for international communication and business transactions. With China's rapid economic growth and increasing integration into the global market, the demand for English-speaking individuals has skyrocketed. Secondly, the influence of Western culture, particularly in areas like film, music, and fashion, has spurred a desire to learn the language among younger generations. This cultural osmosis has created a strongpull towards English, making it a coveted skill and a marker of modernity. The impact of English fever on Chinese society has been profound. On the one hand, it has fostered a more open and inclusive cultural environment, as the language has become a bridge for cross-cultural understanding and exchange. English has also opened up new horizons for Chinese students, enabling them to access a wider range of academic and cultural resources. On the other hand, the intense focus on English education has led to some concerns about the neglect of traditional Chinese languages and cultures. The fear is that the race to learn English might erode the uniqueness and richness of Chinese culture. As for my personal perspective on this English fever, I believe it is a double-edged sword. On the positive side, the widespread learning of English has undoubtedly expanded the opportunities for Chinese individuals and society. It has fostered a more global mindset and prepared China for a more interconnected world. However, I also believe that we should strike a balance between embracing English and nurturing our native languages and cultures. We shouldencourage the learning of English while also preserving and promoting the beauty and depth of Chinese languages and traditions. In conclusion, the rise of English fever in China is a complex phenomenon, reflecting both the global trends and the unique context of Chinese society. While it has brought numerous benefits, we should also be mindful of its potential downsides and strive to maintain a healthy balance between global integration and cultural preservation. Only by doing so can we ensure that English serves as a bridge to the world, rather than a barrier to our own rich heritage.**中国英语热的崛起:一个多元化的现象**近年来,英语热在中国蔚然成风,渗透到社会的各个层面。

In the modern era, China's enthusiasm for English language learning has reached unprecedented levels. This phenomenon, often referred to as "English fever," is a testament to the country's aspiration to integrate with the global community and to embrace the opportunities that come with proficiency in the international language of communication. The roots of this fervor can be traced back to China's opening-up policy in the late 1970s, which ushered in a wave of foreign investments and technological advancements. With the increasing globalization of the economy and society, English has become a crucial skill for individuals seeking to compete in the global market. As a result, parents, educators, and policymakers alike have placed a significant emphasis on English education. This emphasis is evident in the widespread availability of English language courses. From kindergartens to universities, English is a compulsory subject in most educational institutions. Additionally, private language schools and online platforms have proliferated, offering arange of courses tailored to meet the diverse needs of learners. Moreover, the English fever has spilled into the mainstream culture. English-language media, including newspapers, magazines, and television programs, have gained widespread popularity. English songs and movies are also highly sought-after, with many Chinese fans eagerly anticipating the latest releases from international stars. The impact of this English fever is profound. It has not only improved the English proficiency of the Chinese populace but has also fostered a more open and inclusive cultural atmosphere. The ability to communicate in English has opened up new opportunities for Chinese individuals to engage with the world, whether it be through international travel, academic pursuits, or professional development. However, the English fever has also sparked some debates. Some critics argue that the overemphasis on English may lead to a neglect of Chinese language and culture. They fear that the younger generation may lose touch with their heritage as they strive to master aforeign language. It is crucial to strike a balance between promoting English proficiency and preserving cultural identity. English, while an important tool for international communication, should not be seen as a substitute for one's native language or culture. Instead, it should be viewed as a complement, enhancing an individual's ability to engage with the world while maintaining their cultural roots. In conclusion, China's English fever is a complex phenomenon that reflects the country's aspirations and challenges in the era of globalization. While it has brought numerous benefits, it is essential to approach it with a balanced perspective that values both international communication and cultural preservation.**中国的英语狂热**在现代社会,中国对英语学习的热情已经达到了前所未有的高度。

In recent years, the phenomenon of English mania has beenprevailing in China, with an increasing number of people, especially theyounger generation, devoting themselves to learning English. This craze isnot only reflected in the educational system, where English is a compulsorysubject from primary school to university, but also extends to variousaspects of society, such as job hunting, promotions, and even daily life. The reasons for this English mania are numerous. Firstly, Englishhas become the global lingua franca, a language that is widely used ininternational communication, business transactions, and academicresearch. With China's rapid economic development and increasinginternational influence, English has become an essential tool for people toparticipate in the global community. Secondly, the educational system inChina has placed a strong emphasis on English learning, making it a keyfactor in evaluating students' academic performance. This has led to awidespread belief that English is crucial for future success. However, this English mania has also given rise to some concerns. One major issue is the overemphasis on English learning, which sometimescomes at the cost of ignoring other important subjects or even thedevelopment of other skills. This one-sided approach to education can leadto a narrow mindset and limit individuals' overall development. Secondly, the focus on English learning often comes with a heavy burden of exams andgrades, causing considerable stress and anxiety for students. Thispressure-cooker environment can have negative impacts on students' mentalhealth and learning motivation. To address these concerns, a balanced approach to English learningis needed. Firstly, we should recognizethat while English is an importanttool for international communication, it is not the only language or skillthat matters. Other subjects and skills, such as math, science, and criticalthinking, are equally important forindividuals' overall development.Secondly, the educational system should aim to create a more relaxed andstress-free learning environment, where students can learn English withoutthe constant pressure of exams and grades. This can be achieved byadopting more innovative teaching methods andassessment systems thatfocus on students' language application ability and communication skills. In conclusion, while the English mania in China has its roots in theglobalization of the economy and the educational system, it is crucial tomaintain a balanced approach towards learning this language. Byrecognizing the importance of other subjects and skills, and creating a morestress-free learning environment, we can foster a more comprehensive andbalanced development of individuals in China.**中国英语热现象探究**近年来,中国的英语热潮愈演愈烈,越来越多的人,尤其是年轻一代,投身于英语学习之中。

A Survey of the Cause of Overheating Phenomenon of English Learning and theCoping Measures姓名:罗丹学号:200721110114 专业:07级英语教育一班摘要:随着经济的发展,英语成为了世界上使用最广泛的语言,各个国家掀起了一场“英语热”。

The surge in global interest in learning Mandarin Chinese, commonly referred to as "Chinese fever," is a multifaceted phenomenon with profound implications for both China and the international community. This phenomenon has been driven by a confluence of factors, including the rise of China as an economic and political powerhouse, the increasing interconnectedness of the world through globalization, and the growing recognition of the importance of cultural exchange in building bridges between nations. The economic prowess of China has been the primary catalyst for Chinese fever. As China's economy has grown and expanded, so too has its global influence. This has led to increased business and trade opportunities between China and other countries, which in turn has spurred a demand for professionals who are proficient in Mandarin Chinese. Moreover, the Chinese government's ambitious Belt and Road Initiative, which aims to connect China with countries across Asia, Europe, and Africa, has further fueled the demand for Chinese language skills.Globalization has also played a significant role in the spread of Chinese fever. As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, there is a greater need for people to be able to communicate across cultures. Mandarin Chinese, with its vast number of speakers and its growing prominence in international affairs, has emerged as an essential language for global citizens. This is particularly evident in fields such as education, business, and diplomacy, where proficiency in Mandarin Chinese is increasingly seen as a competitive advantage.Cultural exchange is another important factor contributing to Chinese fever. As China opens up to the world and its culture gains international recognition, there is a growing interest among people around the worldin learning about Chinese history, philosophy, art, and literature. This has led to a surge in enrollment inChinese language classes and a proliferation of resources for learning Mandarin Chinese. The spread of Chineseculture through media, such as films and television shows, has also piqued the curiosity of people around the world and contributed to the popularity of Mandarin Chinese. The implications of Chinese fever are far-reaching. The increased demand for Mandarin Chinese learning creates a favorable environment for Chinese language education and the dissemination of Chinese ideas and values. Moreover, it fosters cultural exchange and mutual understanding between China and other countries. For the international community, Chinese fever presents both challenges and opportunities. The growing importance of Mandarin Chinese requires education systems around the world to adapt and incorporate Chinese language instruction into their curricula. This presents challenges in terms of resources and teacher training, but it also creates opportunities for students to gain valuable language skillsand intercultural competence. Furthermore, Chinese fevercan contribute to the development of stronger economic ties, diplomatic relations, and cultural exchanges between countries. In conclusion, Chinese fever is a complex and multifaceted phenomenon that reflects the growingimportance of China in the global arena. It presents challenges and opportunities for education, intercultural exchange, and international relations, and its impact is likely to continue to grow in the years to come.

Let's talk about manias. Let's start with Beatle mania: hysterical teenagers, crying, screaming, pandemonium. Sports mania: deafening crowds, all for one idea -- get the ball in the net. Okay, religious mania: there's rapture, there's weeping, there's visions. Manias can be good. Manias can be alarming. Or manias can be deadly. The world has a new mania. A mania for learning English. Listen as Chinese students practice their English by screaming it.Teacher: ... change my life!Students: I will change my life.T: I don't want to let my parents down.S: I don't want to let my parents down.T: I don't ever want to let my country down.S: I don't ever want to let my country down.T: Most importantly ...S: Most importantly ...T: I don't want to let myself down.S: I don't want to let myself down.Jay Walker: How many people are trying to learn English worldwide? Two billion of them.Students: A t-shirt. A dress.JW: In Latin America, in India, in Southeast Asia, and most of all in China. If you are a Chinese student you start learning English in the third grade, by law. That's why this year China will become the world's largest English-speaking country. (Laughter) Why English? In a single word: Opportunity. Opportunity for a better life, a job, to be able to pay for school, or put better food on the table. Imagine a student taking a giant test for three full days. Her score on this one test literally determines her future. She studies 12 hours a day for three years to prepare. 25 percent of her grade is based on English. It's called the Gaokao, and 80 million high school Chinese students have already taken this grueling test. The intensity to learn English is almost unimaginable, unless you witness it.Teacher: Perfect!Students: Perfect!T: Perfect!S: Perfect!T: I want to speak perfect English.S: I want to speak perfect English.T: I want to speak --S: I want to speak --T: perfect English.S: perfect English.T: I want to change my life!S: I want to change my life!JW: So is English mania good or bad? Is English a tsunami, washing away other languages? Not likely. English is the world's second language. Your native language is your life. But with English you can become part of a wider conversation: a global conversation about global problems, like climate change or poverty, or hunger or disease. The world has other universal languages. Mathematics is the language of science. Music is the language of emotions. And now English is becoming the language of problem-solving. Not because America is pushing it, but because the world is pulling it. So English mania is a turning point. Like the harnessing of electricity in our cities or the fall of the Berlin Wall, English represents hope for a better future -- a future where the world has a common language to solve its common problems.Thank you very much. (Applause)。

China's English fever is a phenomenon that has been growing rapidly in recent years. As a non-native English speaker myself, I have witnessed the increasing importance of English in China.Firstly, English has become a compulsory subject in schools, and many parents are willing to invest a lot of money in their children's English education. This is because they believe that English proficiency will give their children a competitive advantage in the global job market.Secondly, the rise of globalization has made English the lingua franca of business, science, and technology. In order to communicate with international partners, it is necessary for Chinese professionals to have a good command of English.Thirdly, the popularity of Western culture has also contributed to the English fever in China. Many youngpeople are eager to learn English in order to better understand and appreciate Western music, movies, and literature.

In recent years, China has witnessed a surge of enthusiasm for English learning. This trend can beattributed to a variety of factors, including globalization, the rise of China's economy, and the increasing importanceof English in the international arena. One major driver of China's English craze is globalization. As the world becomes more interconnected, proficiency in English has become increasingly importantfor individuals and businesses alike. English is the lingua franca of international trade, diplomacy, and academia, and those who can speak it fluently have a distinct advantagein the global marketplace.Another factor contributing to China's English craze is the country's economic rise. As China has become a major player in the global economy, the demand for English-speaking professionals has skyrocketed. Many Chinese companies now require their employees to have a certain level of English proficiency, and those who can meet this requirement are often rewarded with higher salaries and better job opportunities. Finally, the increasing importance of English in the international arena has also led to a surge in English learning in China. As China becomes more involved in global affairs, proficiency in English has become a key asset for diplomats and government officials. Additionally, Chinese students who wish to study abroad or pursue international careers must be able to speak English fluently in order to succeed.Despite the many benefits of English learning, there are also some drawbacks to China's English craze. One concern is that the emphasis on English may come at the expense of other important subjects, such as Chinese language and culture. Additionally, some worry that the pressure to learn English may be too great, leading to burnout and stress among students.Overall, however, it seems that China's English craze is here to stay. As the world becomes more interconnected and China continues to rise on the global stage, proficiency in English will only become more important. As such, it is likely that English learning will remain a top priority for many Chinese students and professionals for years to come.。
