2.发音方面存在的不同。

英语和美语的发音最具代表性的区别是对er的发音的不同。

英语中,短音的er是的浑元音,但长音的er是个拉长了的浑元音,听起来是一个介于“俄”和“啊”的声音。

而美语中,er听起来怎么都是个“儿”音。

ar:除了轻读短音(如singular)和者后连元音(如clarity),英语的ar全部清一色的长音[a:],而美语中,是“阿尔”。

英语和美语的辅音基本是一致的,但在使用习惯上也有些差别。

如词组clear animosity,英语会读成clear,animosity,而美语会读成clear—ranimosity。

另一个比较明显的区别是d和t。

在由于简单,人们认为,这种语法只表示单一的概念,也只有一种译法,于是不管语言环境发生什么变化,现成的译法到处可套,结果译文既不能表达原文的意思,又不符合汉语的习惯。

American Movies-A Channel to American CultureAs we all know,when we come to a new culture,the best traditional way is just to focus on its literature,because it can give you brief and vivid introduction of this new culture. But things may change from the early 20th century when the movie technology was created,it seems that people prefer spending several hours on a movie or film than reading a book with a cup of tea in hand from then on. This change may be one of the reasons why the modern movie industry prospers so quickly. As a student of English mayor,American culture learning is what is one of the most important aspects to my study. Just want to make the study easy,I choose the American movies and try my best to get into the culture through the variety of the movies. Through American movies,I can tell the traditional Indian culture;through American movies,I come to realize how the adventurous western cowboy culture come into being;through American movies;I know a lot about the racism and the struggle of people against it;through American movies,I can feel the soul of liberty and peace among Americans. All in all,I see thousands of vivid pictures drawn by American culture through the various American movies. But among these movies,there is one that gives me the most and that is what I’m going to talk about. That is Forrest Gump,directed by Robert Zemeckis. It does teach me a lot,and while I watch it,it’s just as if I were there as a citizenof the USA in that age.This movie talks about a guy,named Forrest Gump,whose IQ is just 75,struggling in the society and finally winning a lot. When he was young,due to his below-average IQ,he even couldn’t stand by himself. But with the help of braces,he finally could walk. He lived with his tough mother in the county of Greenbow,Alabama,while his father was on vacation. His mother tried her best to be a good mother and she let Gump go to the public school as normal children where he met his best friend,Jenny. Although Mum and Jenny loved Gump,there were some children liked playing jokes on him. One day,while those children ran after Gump on bike,Gump suddenly got the power to run and run fast. With these magic legs,Gump ran into the College as a football player,and even joined in the collegiate all-American football team. Then he was invited to the White House to meet President Kennedy as a member of the team. After graduation,Gump joined the army and met his another best friend,Bubba,a black always talking shrimps. They were sent to Vietnam,and fortunately they got a good boss,Lieutenant Dan,who was very skillful about war. But they got almost destroyed in one fight,where Bubba lost his life and Lieutenant Dan lost his legs,and Gump rescued several persons including Lieutenant Dan with his magic legs. Gump was wounded in his but-tocks and he had to stay at the war hospital where he learned ping pang from a patient and became good at it quickly just as hewas meant for it. Later,he was sent to the USA and was awarded the Metal of Honor by President Johnson. After it,Gump wandered in the street and somehow took part in the Anti-war meeting,and he met Jenny again. For he was so good at ping pang,he was one of the first Americans invited to China as a member of all-American Ping-Pang team. Back to America,he met Lieutenant Dan and Lieutenant Dan made a promise with him ‘The day that you are a shrimp boat captain,I will come and be your first mate’. Then he was invited to the White House again and President Nixon got him a better hotel room at the Watergate. After his service was up,he went home and earned 25000 dollars in an ad. So he went to Bubba’s hometown,bought a shrimp boat and became a captain. He wrote a letter to Lieutenant Dan,so he got his first mate soon. After getting through a storm,their business began to increase. But Gump got a call said his mother was sick,so he ran back home to look after his mother. This steel magnolia died at last and Gump stayed at hometown. Lieutenant Dan helped him with the business and he became a millionaire soon. One day,Jenny came back and they had lived happily for a while before she left again. With no reason,Gump ran through the whole country several times and somehow he stopped to go home. Then he got a letter from Jenny,so he ran to see her and found they had a smart baby called,Little Forrest,which made him so happy. Jenny told Gump she was sick and would die soon,hoping they could get married before shedie. So they went back to Greenbow and held the wedding. Jenny died at length and Gump lived with Little Forrest happily."Forrest Gump" is as profound as it is romantic, for it is not only a love story but a complicated story about the American social and cultural things from 1960s to 1980s. The movie is meant to be American history as seen through the eyes of a man who understands very little of what he sees. And he speaks for people who can't make any more sense of the last three decades than he can. The tumult of the 60s made the whole country different. The blacks realized they had to get the equality and liberty by their own instead of depending on the whites’ mercy. So the Civil Rights Movement carried out and we can see Gump’s hometown had to abolish the segregation laws and allow the blacks to go to the same school as the whites did. From the movie,we can see the whites even called the blacks ‘coons’ at that time. The conflict was furious at first,but the blacks won the non-violence war with the help of justice and God. In the 60s another great influential thing was the Vietnam War. This war took thousands of American young peoples’ lives and led to the turbulence of the country. The miracle scene in the movie ,that Gump was regarded as a pacifist and was invited to give a speech in front of people,was a common scene around the America which was called the Anti-war Movement. We can easily get to know the mainstream of culture of that time in the movies. Then it came to the absurd 70s,when the war ended and young peoplesuddenly found they lost their way to the future. So they experienced something terrible: drugs, soulless sex, more abuse, more drugs, self-disgust. The whole country seemed to get lost and presented a terrible decadence. What is worthy to mention is that Gump even went to China as a witness of establishment of diplomatic relations between China and America. I think it’s the only good thing mentioned in the movie during the 70s. Another shame in American political history,the Watergate ,was also mentioned in this movie and was ranged by the director that Gump was the one who found out the whole thing by chance. Then it’s the greedy 80s,during which more and more people became money worshipers,and more and more people believed in‘gain,no pay’. Many people just thought how to make money and how much they could make. In the movie we can notice that many people earned a number of money from Gump when he was running across the country. At the last,we can find a new culture by knowing what Jenny exactly suffered from. We can easily know it’s Aids culture. A new challenge to the world came when we had to accept this terrible disease. Even Gump was a billionaire,he had nothing to do with this. I think we have to accept that money is not almighty.Besides these culture background from 60s to 80s,I want to talk more about the beautiful and wisdom sentences in the movie.Forrest was aided mightily by his mother's constant faith and homey maxims. "Stupid is asstupid does" and "Life is like a box of chocolates; you never know what you're going to get" were the ones he found most useful in dealing with the increasing complexities of his universe. Don’t you think it’s so wisdom and full of philosophy?Gump’s mother could always make it easy for Gump to understand. When Gump asked ‘Where is father?’, she answered ‘He is on vocation. And vocation’s when you go somewhere and you don’t ever come back.’ I still remember in the movie the mother told Gump‘Don’t let anybody tell you they’re better than you’when somebody stared at Gump’s braces. I think this must give Gump a lot of confidence in his life. There was a sentence that Gump always said in the movie,that was‘A promise is a promise’. That’s why he bought a shrimp boat and gave a lot of money to Bubba’s family. In one of the movie's sweetest scenes, Forrest looked on with bemusement as she threw rock after rock at her old house. When she ran out of stones, she fell to the ground and sobs. "Sometimes there just aren't enough rocks," figured Forrest, who sat down beside Jenny to wait for as long as it took. He was, after all, loyal to his friends even in death. From those sentences we can see the beauty of love from a mother, we can know the reason why Gump could be happier than us, we can figure out what the power of culture exactly is, we can recognize what we should truly appreciate.At two hours and twenty-two minutes, the movie is an epic ramble,with characters disappearing and reappearing as the story requires. Gump is a safe guide through the tumult of the 60s, the absurdity of the 70s, and the greed of the 80s. You can see a guy named Forrest Gump, who is incapable of recognizing a hint, continues in his halting way. Among his incredible achievements, he has been a football all-star, a Vietnam War hero, an international ping-pong champ, a shrimp boat captain and a billionaire. From the movie, through Gump’s whole life, I really learn a lot about American culture and I do respect Gump this role performed by Tom Hanks. He will stay in my mind and life forever. However, the ubiquitous translation mistakes of public signs greatly undermine the international image of China. So,specificating and constantly perfecting the translation of public signs have become an urgent work in order to establish a good international image.The paper ventures an attempt to analyze the current problems existing in the C-E translation of public signs and to seek proper translational strategies both from the perspectives of theory and practice.By closely observing numerous samples of both standard and problematic translation of signs,the author manages to generalize the characteristics of public signs and to categorize the problems and mistakes in the current C-E translation of public signs.Then, proper translational strategies are proposed on the basis of in-depth study of relevant theories and keen observation of practice.Translation is not merely a cross-linguistic activity, but more of a transmission of cultural information.The translation of public signs is no exception.An appropriate translation of public sign should not only belinguistically correct, but also culturally acceptable.This paper expresses the meaning of the public signs and classify the signs according to the standards of objective demand and function. On the basis of the classification of the translation errors proposed by Christiane Nord, the author aims at the most appropriate translation strategies for each type. With the examination of sufficient sources, the author finds that it is not difficult to eliminate the errors at linguistic level since the text of the public signs is less complex than documentary and other instrumental texts due to its conciseness and directness features (Ni 18).1.2 Significance of the studyPublic S igns affect people’s life in a tremendous way. When somebody smokes, it is the public sign that stops him. In fascinating and mysterious spots where we have never been to, it is the public sign that teaches us related knowledge. Foreign visitors from all walks of life,such as entrepreneurs,professors,students and tourists come to China for various purposes.But for most of them,they know little about Chinese.In this case,it is necessary to translate Chinese public signs into English for the convenience of these foreign visitors.In this case, a proper translation helps establish a good image of China and enhance the cultural communication.1.3 Structure of the paperThe paper is structured with five chapters:The first chapter is a general introduction to the thesis, including the objective of the study, the structure of the thesis and the significance of the study. And the fifth chapter draws a conclusion to the paper,in which the author appeals for translators and scholars to make contributions to the C-E translation of public signs.CHAPTER II General Introduction to Public Signs2.1 Definition of Public SignsPublic Signs,which are usually called“signs”,include public notices,advertisements,slogans and expressions on the public signs.Public signs refer to “signs” in English and are defined in different ways.Ac cording to Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English(1997),a sign is a piece of paper, metal, or wood with words or a picture that gives information,warnings,or instructions.In that sense, public sign is the general terms for indicators,signs,traffic signs, posters, slogans, warning, short notices,short instructions,stickers,and are becoming the catch word and the buzzword.All in all, public signs are so widely used and played important roles in our daily life.2.2 Functions of Public SignsPublic signs are essential to the normal operation of the society and their influence is also visible in almost every aspect of our daily life.Sometimes,we have to admit that our lives cannot do without the proper guidance that public signs provide to us.However, what usually happens is that we are prone to be bewildered by various public signs and the enormous information they convey to us.Therefore, it would be necessary to classify the public signs in terms of their functions as well as the status of information that they deliver.2.2.1 Directing functionDirecting is the most basic function of public signs, t his type of public signs is used to give readers related information about what the institution is,what it deals with and what kind of service it can provide.For example:Take Away(外卖),Gas Station(加油站),Emergency Exit(紧急出口),Business Hours(营业时间),Pause(暂停),Menu(菜单),Airport Security(机场安检).From the examples above we may tell that the language and the tone of these public signs are generally neutral,reflecting no attitude towards receptors.Therefore,public signs of this kind are purely informative rather than vocative.2.2.2 Prompting functionPromoting signs are similar to the directive ones in their informative function. While the difference is the former .carries the tone of warning,reminding the readers to pay some attention to certain things or activities.For example:Keep Clear(请保持清洁), Keep Silence(请保持安静),Wet Paint(油漆未干),Fully Booked(客满),Beware of Pickpockets(小心扒手),Maximum Height(限高).2.2.3 Restricting functionPublic Signs with restricting function impose restriction or even prohibition on receptors.The language used in this kind of signs are simple and direct but are not in rude,tough or impolite way.We can list some of them as following:Pay In Cash(现金支付),Slow Out(减速慢行),Keep Silence(保持安静),30 Minutes Parking(限停30分钟),Seat By Number(对号入座), Stand In Line(排队等候).2.2.4 Compelling functionCompelling function is the strongest considerable mood.It is used to prohibit the readers to do something or must do something.The language used is usually forceful,with no possibility of making a compromise.The sign with this function which we mostly often see is“No Smoking禁止吸烟”,that is to say that smoking iscompletely forbidden.Imperative sentence is not enough to express this strong mood,usually, we use“No+…”form,for example,“No Food禁止携带食物”.More examples:Don’t Touch(禁止触摸),No Cameras(禁止拍照),No Visitors(游客止步),No Trucks(卡车禁止通行),Dogs Not Allowed(禁止带狗入内).Translation of the public signs, translators not only need to grasp their function features since we use different mood to express different function,but also should keep their language features in mind during the translating.CHAPTER III Analysis on Problems in C-E Translation ofPublic Signs3.1 Linguistic translation problemsLinguistic translation errors are often due to deficiencies in the translator's source or target language competence (Nord 77).And in his book Pragmatics and English Language He Ziran explained that by making linguistic errors,the translators and interpreters fail to conform to the target language structures,instead they blindly translate the source text in their own language structures(157).Professor Wang Yinquan, classifies linguistic translation errors into: spelling mistakes, grammar mistakes and wrong diction (32).3.1.1 Spelling errorsSpelling errors are typical translation problems in bilingual public signs. The reasons for this type of errors attribute to the three factors: the incompetent language acquisition, the laziness of the translator when writing, the uncertainty of the correct spelling, among which the third type is most difficult to be identified. For example: 3.1.2 Grammatical errorsApart from spelling mistakes,many grammatical errors also occur in the translated signs.These errors appear in various forms,most of which result from the translator’s poor command of the English language or irresponsible working attitude.As a result,the translated public signs cannot be of any help to the target readers.Sometimes they may do damage the image of our city.For example: 室内停车场(Car Park)—It may be apparent to tell that the translator intends to use the word“park”as a noun to express the meaning of parking place for automobiles.However, as a noun the word actually means a public place wherepeople can entertain themselves with the landscape or public facilities in it.Therefore, it will be advisable to use the gerund form of the word “park”and translate it as“Indoor Parking”.3.1.3 Wrong dictionsWrong Dictions occur when t he translator doesn’t make right choices of words in the target culture that will lead to unsuccessful expression of the correct information to the target text receivers. In fact, many English words have more than one meaning. Sometimes one word used to describe the source culture may not be applicable in another situation and the diction is conditioned. The words chosen for each text might vary according to different semantic and syntactic features in different situations. For example:请勿采摘花朵--Please Don’t Pick Flowers. Here use“pick”to describe the gesture. In fact, there is a variety of expression in English corresponding with “摘”, of which one of the expressions is “pick”. But in the given circumstances, “pick”doesn’t equate with “摘”. “Pick”means to select among a variety of choices, but here the sender wants to persuade people not to pluck the flowers. The error is due to the confusion about the seemingly identical usage of one word.3.2 Cultural translation problemsAs we all know, people in different cultures may view the same thing in different ways and differ in the perspective of cognition.At the same time,they express the same idea in different way.As far as Chinese and English are concerned, culture differences are tremendous.Translation breaks down language barriers and thus realizes communication between cultures using different languages. In this sense, target readers approach to people of source culture whose beliefs, backgrounds, perception of the world are distinct from their own.For example:古装照相It is ancient to pack photo“古装照相”is a typical Chinese term. In English, people don’t have the correspondent term. According to the public signs translation convention, the signs which are composed of Chinese noun phrases are expected to have the same structure in English version, so the sentence is not correct in terms of the sentence structure. Also concerning the meaning of the sentence, it is wrongly translated that the foreigners can’t get the message which leads to the pragmatic failure of the assumed function. The correct version should be “Photos in ancient costume”.CHAPTER IV Strategies for C-E Public Signs Translation4.1 Principles of C-E translation of Public SignsAs we know, different functions need different language forms to convey and each language style possesses its special principles.Ni Chuanbin and Liu Zhi analyze the language principles of public signs in their essay“The Principles for C-E Translation of Public Signs and its Cases Study”,published in Shanghai Journal of Translators for Science and Technology(18).Firstly, the signs are on a board,so the language on the signs should be in concise way due to the comparatively small space.Secondly, some public signs must draw the public’s attention at the first sight and the readers can catch its meaning very quickly and correctly, especially the traffic signs,such as“Abrupt Turn Left Ahead前方急转弯”,the applied words should be simple ones instead of rare ones.At last,the meaning of the signs should be clear and easy to read,the sign is set without ambiguity. So we can know the principles in details as following:4.1.1 ClearnessDue to the short time the target reader can spend on reading the signs the meaning of the signs should be clear and easy to be understood.As the target readers are the common people who have little knowledge related to the concerned topic,the signs should directly hit the point and there should exist no vagueness.“严禁客货混装Don’t put passengers and cargos together”. It is hazy and not clearness. So the sign“严禁客货混装”should be translated into“No passengers on Trucks”.The signs are set for the public and not every reader is professional,therefore when we translate signs,we should hit the point directly and clearly and should notjust talk around the bush.4.1.2 ConcisenessAccording to William Strunk,Jr.and E.B.White in 1979(Joan Pinkham):“Vigorous writing is concise.A sentence should contain no unnecessary words,a paragraph no unnecessary sentences,for the same reason that a drawing should have no unnecessary lines and a machine no unnecessary parts.”It is also true of language of public signs.Usually, the readers for public signs just give a quick look at the board with signs on when they pass by.So the language on it need not be in a complete sentence,a phrase or just a word is enough,for example,“No Smoking禁止吸烟”,“Open正在营业”,we need not use sentences“Please do not smoke”an“We are on business”.4.1.3 Simple wordsPublic Signs are set for the public,target readers of this kind of materials are ordinary people,not only the native English speakers,but also other foreigners who know a little English and English is not his mother language,and target readers also include overseas Chinese who is not a English native speaker.If the English version is full of rare words and expression,it will cause a pragmatic failure of communication for public signs.There is always a small restaurant at the airport to provide fast food for the passengers,the English tablet should be“Snacks”instead of“Refection”,the later one is not often be used nowadays and we cannot find it in the dictionaries published in recent years.Take all another example,“景区环境卫生,需要您的维护”,should we translate it into“Environmental Sanitation of the Scenic Spot Needs Your Conserve”? The words“sanitation”and“environmental”are not familial words for the public,we had better use“Keep Clear”or“No Littering”.From the above,in order to make target readers catch the meaning at first glance,we should use the concise,clear, simple words and expressions in C-E translation of public signs.4.2 Strategies of C-E translation of Public Signs4.2.1 ModificationGenerally speaking, it is always the case that the reader in the culture of the target language may not share the cultural background of the source language.Therefore,when dealing with culture-loaded words and idioms,the translator sometimes has to make cultural modification so as to generate the same feedback from the target text reader with that of the source text reader, and as for the translation of public signs, it is no exception.For examples:西湖的虎跑泉—Tiger Running Spring, in this public sign,the translator obviously take the actual meaning of the sign for granted by translating the word“虎跑”as“tiger running”which means that a tiger runs for the spring.4.2.2 AdditionSome public signs,especially signs at scenic spots,tend to include dynasties,legends or other cultural elements,while most foreign visitors lack the background knowledge of China.If the public signs are translated literally, the English versions may confuse the target readers.Thus we should adopt the translation strategy of addition to supply necessary information on the basis of accurate comprehension of the original public signs.For example:谢绝游客入内Closed To Visitors禁止在墙上涂写No Scribbling On The Wall4.2.3 OmissionDue to different aesthetic standards and cultures,Chinese writing tends to include flowery words,four-word phrases or some culture elements which are special to the Chinese culture.However, English writing pursues clear and simple expressions.In How to Help Foreigners Know China,Duan Liancheng holds a view that with the development of tourism in recent years,large numbers of brochures pamphlets and pictorials have been published for foreign tourists.A common weakness of these materials is full of flowery words and cultural elements of China which may confuse the target readers (Duan 286). So the translator should omit some adjectives or cultural elements which may pose barriers to the target readers.Then the English version will be easily understood by them.For example:1.Source Text:慢速行驶Version A:You must drive slowly.Version B:Drive slowly2.Source Text:前方学校Version A:There is a school ahead.Version B:School Ahead4.2.4 Mutual transformation of affirmative and negative expressionsMutual transformation of affirmative and negative expressions is a common strategy in translating the text of one language to the other.It is especially useful for transcending the translational difficulties due to different ways or habits of expressing ideas in Chinese and English.In translating public signs,mutual transformation of affirmative and negativeexpressions is necessary as well.In western countries especially in English—speaking countries,people tend to avoid using negative expressions in public literatures as much as possible in case that unpleasant emotion or feeling would be aroused on the part of the receptor.However, because of the difference in cultural values,negative expressions are more frequently used in Chinese public signs.Therefore,according to the theory of cultural translation, we should adopt the translational method of“Domestication”.For example: “社会车辆禁止入内”,it is a kind of negative expression in Chinese language. While it should be translated into “Staff Only” in English, it is affirmative.4.3 Requirement for the translatorsThe C-E translation of public signs is by no means an easy job and it requires that a translator be serious and accountable in attitude, and proficient in both the source and the target languages at the same time.A good translator should always bear in mind the features and characteristics of public signs.Only if the translators acquire the expertise in the source and target languages as well as the source and target cultures can they produce qualified versions. In addition, as for the making process of signs, the local governments should choose reliable and efficient sign-making units by means of bidding to undertake the job.And the translation should be tested in the foreigners to ensure the acceptability.Then a supervision organization in charge of public signs should be established to make sure that some common English versions are accurate and unified.CHAPTER V ConclusionBased on the previous discussions and analyses, the major findings of this study can be summarized as follow:Firstly, the linguistic translation problems account for the reasons for spelling, grammatical and wrong dictions problems. Translators should improve their language acquisition in dealing with the problems.Secondly, as to cultural problems, the translators are advised to adopt communicative translation. To be more specific, the translation strategies are adaptation, restructuring, semi-literal translation, etc.Thirdly, the C-E translation involves the principles and the methods. The principles include three points of clearness, conciseness and simple words. The translation takes place in a given situation or in another sense, the methods of C-E translation of public signs should be divided into four: modification, addition, omission and mutual transformation of affirmative and negative expressions.Actually, the problems of the translation of public signs are far more complicated than the thesis.The problems that have been discussed and proposed with strategies to are just a tiny tip of the whole iceberg.With the development of the society, it is sure that more and more public signs will come out by taking various forms,and new problems in translating them will turn up.Therefore,the classification of public signs and mistranslation, as well as the strategies for the betterment of the current status of sign translation, although the author attempts to let them be, are not all-inclusive and universally accurate. American MusicThe music of the U.S. reflects the country’s multi-ethnic population through a diverse array of styles. Rock’n roll, rhythm, country, blues, jazz, and hip hop are among the country’s most internationally-renowned genres. Since the beginning of the 20th century, some types of American popular music have gained a near global audience. Native Americans were the earliest inhabitants of the U.S. and played its first music. Begining in the 17th century, immigrants from the British, Spain, Isles, and France began arriving in large numbers, bringing with them new styles and instruments. African slaves also brought musical traditions, and each subsequent wave of immigrants contributed to a melting pot.Much of modern popular music can trace back to the emergence in the late 19th century of African American blues and the growth of gospel music in the 1920s. The African American basis for popular music used elements derived from European and indigenous music. The U.S. has also seen documented folk music and recorded popular music produced in the ethnic styles of the Ukrainian, Polish, Hispanic, Irish, Scottish and Jewish communities, among others. Many American cities and towns have vibrant music scenes which, in turn, support a lot of regional musical styles. The native American tribes play their own varieties of folk music, most of it spiritual in nature. The native Americans played the first folk music in what is now the U.S., using a wide variety of techniques and styles. Some commonalities are near universal among native American traditional music, however, especially the lack of polyphony and harmony, and the use of vocables and descending melodic figures. Tradional instrumentations uses the flute and many kinds of percussion instruments, like rattles, drums, and shakers. Since African and European contact was established, native American folk music has grown in new directions, into fusions with disparate styles like European folk dances and Tejano music. Modern native American music may be best known for pan-tribal gatherings, powwow gatherings at which traditionally styled music and dances are performed.Blues and SpiritualsSpirituals were primarily expressions of religius faith, sung by slaves on southern plantations. In the mid to late 19th century, spirituals spread out of the United States South. In 1871 Fisk University became home to the Jubilee Singers, a pioneering griup that popularized spirituals across the country. In imitation of this group, gospel quartets arose, followed by increasing diversification with the early 20th century rise of jackleg and singing preachers.Blues is a combination of African field hollers, work songs and shouts. It developed in the rural south in the first decade of the 20th century. The most important features of the blues is its use of the blue scale, with a flatted or indeterminate third, as well as the typically lamenting lyrics;through these elements had existed in African American folk music prior to the 20th century, the codified form of modern blues did not exist until the early 20th century.Classical musicThe European classical music tradition was brought to the U.S. with some of the first colonists.European classical music is rooted in the traditions of European art, concert and ecclesiastical music. The central norms of this tradition developed between 1550 and 1825, centering on what was known as the common practice period. Many American classical composers tried to work entirely within European models until late in 19th century. When Antonin Dvooak, a prominent Czech composer, visited the U.S. from 1892 to 1895, he iterated the idea that American classical music needed its own models instead of imitating European composers. He also helped to inspire subsequent composers to make a distinctly American style. By the beginning of 20th century, many American composers were incorporating disparate elements into their work, ranging from blues and jazz to native American music.Popular musicThe U.S. has produced many popular composers and musicians in the modern world. Jazz has roots in West African musical and classical expression, and in African music traditions including ragtime and blues, as well as European military band music. Early jazz was closely related to ragtime, with which it could be distinguished by the use of more intricate rhythmic improvisation. The earliest jazz bands adopted many vocabularies of the blues,including bent and blue notes, instrumental “growls” and smears otherwise not used on European instruments. For example, Uncle Sam is representative of the American government and the American people; the buffalo nickel is made in memory of the Indians and the buffalo, which were victims during the westward movement.However, as far as I’m concerned, out of all of America's symbols, none has proved more enduring or evocative than the Statue of Liberty.The statue of liberty is a colossal sculpture on Liberty Island in New York Harbor. It was designed by a French designer, Frederic Bartholdi. And the dream is attainable for all that are ready to work hard on this idealistic goal of the immigrants. There are outstanding representatives of the immigrants that give proof to the possibility of succeeding in America despite race, color, and religion. Perhaps that’s why so many people are driven to this land- arrive with the belief that opportunities for a good life will be available here. As those immigrants blend a solid foundation for the formation and development of the main stream of American culture, they progressively become indispensable in the American world.Considering the American immigration, the statue of liberty plays a vital part in the American culture. It is a perfect reminder that the USA is a land of immigrants: it was New York Harbor where the first big waves of European immigrants arrived, their ships entering through the Verrazano Narrows to round the bend of the bay and catch a first glimpse of "Liberty Enlightening the World" - an end of their journey into the unknown, and the symbolic beginning of a new life. Every year millions of immigrants coming to America passed the statue as ships carried them to the immigration processing center on Ellis Island. For a long time the statue has been a symbol that people have arrived in the United States. A nd it’s also the guarantee that the seeking for better lives begin.There’s a very famous scene in the movie The Legend of 1900. On a cold winter morning people were lying on the deck of a huge passenger liner. The misty fog was thick and all sound was still on board. Suddenly a scream out of pleasant shock sliced the air and woke everybody. It was the scream of someone who saw the statue of liberty. Then people on board boiled. They jumped up and rushed to the edge of the deck, took off their hats, waving, whistling. This inspiring scene was a huge contrast with that a minute ago. People saw the statue of liberty, which meant they saw America and their dream.From its beginning, the statue was a symbol. It honored ideas of independence, democracy, and the aspiration to work for better lives. Today, it is still a symbol of these ideas. 英语专业毕业论文格式

外国语学院英语专业毕业论文格式一、论文基本构件及装订顺序1.汉语封皮2.英语封皮3.谢辞4.英、中文论文摘要和英、中文关键词5.正文,包括 introduction, body, notes, conclusion, bibliography 五部分。

6.如有附录,放在参考文献之后。

二、基本要求1.长度约6000字左右(只计算正文长度,页码从论文正文即Introduction标起,一律标在正下方)。

2.打印及纸张:毕业论文统一在word 2003格式下排版打印文本。

使用A4规格的纸张,上下左右边距为A4纸标准边距,论文正文为双倍行距,小四号字,Times New Roman 字体,文中小标题与正文字号和字体一致, 并加粗。

3.论文经指导老师同意后方可定稿。

论文打印1式5份,提交答辩小组。

答辩后,向学院提交修改稿(纸制和电子文档)存档。

三、具体要求1.封皮英、汉语封皮均可复制,但应认真填写及更改相关内容, 如中、英文题目及你的姓名等。

填写汉语封皮中的内容时应注意以下几点:(1)分类号分H和I两种,其中I代表文学类;H代表语言、文字类;(2)单位代码:104;(3)密级:一般;(4)字体,字号与要求项目保持一致,均为宋体。

英语封皮上所有内容全部为Times New Roman字体,三号字,所有字母一律大写,但书名要斜体。

英、汉封皮格式详见附件。

汉语封皮可从教务处网站下载。

2.论文题目论文题目(title)是用概括性强的语言恰当地反映论文的内容。

论文题目字数(或单词数)一般不应超过25个,用词组的形式表述。

3.谢辞谢辞(Acknowledgements)应单独成页,置于英语封皮之后。

谢辞是对论文写作过程中获得的各种帮助表示感谢,这些帮助可以是导师的指导和批阅、老师和同学的支持或是原著作者对引文的授权许可等等。

致谢的顺序一般是由主要到次要,由个人到集体,主要针对那些提供过直接帮助的个人或机构。

此外致谢辞要真挚、简练、恰到好处。

先后在成都、西安和香港举行了展览。

苏州是这次巡展的第四站,也是最后一站。

However, the promotion of this use pattern is hampered by the concerns that the heavy metals in municipal sludge would cause secondary pollution of the soil. Soil pollution caused by the heavy metals in municipal sludge caused is not only related to the total amount of heavy metals, but also determined by the chemical forms of heavy metals. This paper analyzed the contents and chemical forms of heavy metals in municipal sludge and compost products, and discussed the accumulation of heavy metals in soil and crop after land application of sludge and compost products. Municipal sludge is a extremely complex mixture composed of organic debris, bacteria, inorganic particles and colloidal, which contains large amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and other nutrients and some available organic ingredients, and also contains a number of refractory organic matter, pathogens and heavy metals and other toxic substances. According to the statistics[1,2], in the past few years, Britain and the United States annual respectively produce dry sludge up to 1.7 × 106t and 9 × 106t, the amount of sludge annual rise 5% to 10%, while China's municipal sewage sludge produced annually up to 1.0 ×108t or more. If such a large amount of sludge is not handled properly, not only will it cause the environment to serious secondary polluted, harm to human health, but also waste resources. Therefore, searching for proper and safe methods to handle and disposal sludge, particularly sludge resource use patterns, has become a key issue to be solved for sewage treatment industry.At present, incineration, burying in deserted soil, dumping inside the sea and land application are the main four sewage sludge disposal methods. Sludge dumped inside the sea caused serious pollution to the marine environment, and this approach has been disabled in many countries. Sludge incineration is of high cost, and heavy metals in sewage sludge may be spread with the smoke, and then pollute the air. Burying sludge takes up a lot of land, and the places that are suitable for burying are more and more limited, with a large number of municipal sewage sludge produced. Compared the methods mentioned above, Sludge land application is one sludge treatment and disposal method which is promising, because the organic matters, N, P and other nutrient elements in sludge can improve the soil and be used by the crops. However, since municipal sludge contains a certain heavy metals, when the sludge are applied into the land, it will result in secondary pollution for the soil and affect crop quality, and then cause a threat to human health, the research about that area have been reported. In short, heavy metals in sludge have become a major factor that limits the sludge into land application.II.T HE CONTENT AND MORPHOLOGY OF HEAVY METAL INSEWAGE SLUDGEThe toxic and harmful heavy metal in sewage sludge mainly contains Cd, Pb, Hg, Cr, As, Ni, Zn, Cu, etc. It can be seen from table 1, Zn is commonly higher than others, secondly are Cu and Cr, however, the high toxic metal, Hg, Cd, As, usually range between several and dozens of mg/kg. The contents of heavy metal are large difference in different wastewater treatment plant, it maybe relate to wastewater resources, wastewater quantity and treatment process.The heavy metal content of sewage sludge show decreasing tendency with the emission control of city industrial waste and clean technology is used. In 2006, the sludge samples of 107 municipal wastewater treatment plants were selected from nationwide and the content of heavy metal were measured (see table 2) by institute of geographic sciences and natural resources research, CAS. Such as inorganic mercury and methyl mercury have different morphology, so the difference of toxic between them are greater, methyl mercury is easy to bioaccumulation compare to inorganic mercury and have badly influence on human health. The heavy metal pollution risk which caused by sludge compost for land using is evaluated only from the angle of total metals, it maybe result in minimize the risk. Therefore, the research to heavy metal chemical speciation of sludge could exactly response its bioavailability and environmental risk.Among the research on heavy metal speciation, Tessier[5] sequential extraction sorts the heavy metal to 5 kinds by morphology, exchangeable, carbonates fraction, bound to Fe-Mn oxides, sulfide and bound organic and residual fraction. The former three are easy to absorb and utilize by plants because of their poor stability, and they are most poi sonous, while the latter two formers have stronger stability, difficult to release into the environment.By analyzing the data showed in table 3, we can get that in the sludge of Liede wastewater treatment plant, Cu is mainly organic bound form, while Zn is mainly residual fraction, the rate of unstable morphology of Cd reached to 76.5%, only 23.5% is stable morphology. Cd has higher activity comparatively and maybe result in greater harm in application, o people should spend more attention on it. When it comes to the sludge of Tianjin wastewater treatment plant, Cu and Zn exist as organic bound form and residual fraction, having stronger stability and less toxicy. Cd mainly is residual fraction with the rate beyond 80%. Pb mainly is residual fraction in sludge of the two wastewater treatment plants. Therefore, the distribution of heavy metal morphology from different sewage sludge have large difference, even in the same sludge of wastewater treatment plant, the large difference also exist. The products can be used in the farmland, garden and lawn, supplying the soil organic composition, improving soil fertility and promoting crop growth. Sludge compost has two main ways. One is the sludge digestion or mixing sludge, garbage and other material for agriculture, while the other one is making compound fertilizer for agriculture by composting fermentation. With the sludge in composting, not only can we eliminate the odor, killpathogenic feed and parasites, but also can degrade most toxic organic matter, solidify and passivate heavy metal, improve physical properties, reduce moisture content and improve the rotten degree of organics. As a result, we can improve the feasibility and safety of its agricultural use.China is a developing country based on agriculture. Whether from the economic factors or from the use of fertilizer effect, should it be a proper method fit with China's national condition to make the composted sludge in land use. We can choose appropriate disposal method according to the actual situation in developed areas. However, what we have to face during composted sludge use is that the heavy metal in it can pollute the soil seriously, and then the food security and our health will be threatened. It is the most principle problem.Recently, some scholars have conducted some studies on speciation of heavy metals during composting the sludge. By composting the sewage sludge and straw in high temperature, Guoxue Li etc [8]found the exchangeable state, carbonate-combined state and Fe-Mn oxides combined state of heavy metal Cu, Zn and Mn in sludge decreased, organic-combined state and residual state of them increased to some extent. With different sludge composting process, Canarutto et al [9]found that the aqueous and exchangeable of Cu, Cd, Zn, Ni, Pb and Cr were significantly reduced at last. Furthermore, on aerobic composting process of sewage sludge from Xining Sun etc. [10], result showed that speciation of heavy metals has changed. Available state of all the heavy metals but Cd have decreased, and most of them existed in residual state that is relatively stable, succeeded in reducing the risk of heavy metal pollution during sewage sludge’ agricultural use.The date showed in table 3 is about the chemical form of heavy metal, Cu, Cd, Zn, Pb before and after composting of sludge. It can tell us that the contents of exchangeable state and carbonate-combined of Cu, Zn, Pb in Lie-De sewage sludge increased slightly during composting, while the highly toxic exchangeable cadmium reduced from 28.4% to 14.0%, and residual state increased from 14.5% to 25.7% during composting. The bioavailability and the toxicity threat to plant of Cd have decreased. All of the heavy metal’ exchangeable form has decreased with different rates in Tianjin sewage sludge. As the biggest two, exchangeable zinc reduced from 10.5% to 4.8%, and exchangeable cadmium from 3.2% to 1.8% during composting with rate of reduction over and close to 50% respectively. It showed that the formation of heavy metals in sewage sludge has changed during composting and that the change ranges of heavy metals from different municipal sewage treatment plants is different, too.It can be concluded from the above research that the content of exchangeable state of heavy metals decreased by degrees in the sludge and it changed to stable humic organic-combined state. As a result, the biological effectiveness has been debased, and the pollution risk of heavy metals in sludge composting has reduced.IV.T HE INFLUENC E ON LAND APPLICATION OF SEWAGESLUDGE BY HEAVY METALLand application may cause heavy metal contamination in soil, and have negative impact on plant growth and development [11,12], just because the heavy metal is highly toxic and nondegradable in municipal sludge.TABLE IV. With the rising of sludge’s amount, it will result in an increasing of heavy metal concentrations in edible part even higher than national criterion of food sanitation. As a result of this, human health will be endangered.V.C ONCLUSIONSThe paper analyzed the content and form of heavy metal in parts of municipal sludge and composting product, and the accumulation of heavy metals in soil and crop after application of sewage sludge and compost. It turned out that the content of heavy metal and chemical forms are extremely different between different municipal sludge, different heavy metals insame municipal sludge. The sludge composting treatment in general can promote heavy metals to be stable form by active form of transformation and reduce the migration ability and plant availability of heavy metals in soil, however, a long-term of applying lots of Sewage sludge and sludge compost may cause accumulation of heavy metals in soil and crop. This paper, through studying the history of the Mississippi River and the present situation, flows through regional, hydrological conditions and so on, focuses on American geographical situation, find out the existing problems, and to solve. All successful writers are mostly influenced by regional culture. The influence of regional culture in acquiring writer, is the latest teacher may by various means, affect a writer aesthetic emotion, way of thinking and writing style. Mark Twain was born in Florida. The Mississippi River, flowing through the state, exerts a tremendous influence on him. The beautiful sight and the colorful life as well as the cast of characters are all quite familiar to Mark Twain. Therefore the Mississippi River produces great regional impact on Mark Twain’s literary creation. Mark Twain takes the Mississippi River as the carrier of his classic works shapes his unique writing style and at the same time bestows specific meaning on the river.The Mississippi River from the United States of north and south is first the river. In the development process, the river basins administrative agencies combined with river resources advantage, by setting the reasonable development mode and development planning, promoted the rapid development of the American economy. The Ohio River has its own tributary, the Tennessee River. Americans built a lot dams on the Tennessee River during the Great Depression for better navigation and flood control. This study does not cover all the information about the American geography, just a part of it about the Mississippi River.The Mississippi River originated in the north-west of Minnesota, from north to south, collected the Missouri river, the Ohio River and the Arkansas River three tributaries later, in New Orleans into the gulf of Mexico near. Among them the Missouri river originated in Montana State the Rocky Mountains; the length is more than the Mississippi River itself. As the United States the central region of the Mississippi River traffic artery, a basin of nearly 300 square kilometers, for American agriculture development, the industrial revolution plays a vital role. Study not only helps us to understand the Mississippi River roughly landscape, and its waters of China's Yangtze River management also has certain reference.
