Unit OneTRAITS OF THE KEY PLAYERS (David G. Jensen)核心员工的特征大卫·G.詹森1 What exactly is a key player? A "Key Player" is a phrase that I've heard about from employers during just about every search I've conducted. I asked a client - a hiring manager involved in a recent search - to define it for me. "Every company has a handful of staff in a given area of expertise that you can count on to get the job done. On my team of seven process engineer and biologists, I've got two or three whom I just couldn't live without," he said. "Key players are essential to my organization. And when we hire your company to recruit for us, we expect that you'll be going into other companies and finding just that: the staff that another manager will not want to see leave. We recruit only key players."1核心员工究竟是什么样子的?

Starting out
Task 1
Chinese cuisine has become widespread in many parts of the world—from East Asia to North America, Australia to Western Europe. Regional cultural differences vary greatly among the different regions of China, giving rise to the different styles of food. There are eight main regional cuisines: Anhui, Guangdong, Fujian, Hunan, Jiangsu, Shandong, Sichuan and Zhejiang. Work in pairs to choose two different regional cuisines with which you are familiar from the eight alternatives above. Compare them by discussing the ingredients, preparation, flavors etc. (P35)
➢ Do you think globalization will have an effect on traditional Chinese eating habits? If so, why and how? If not, why not?
• I think globalization will have an effect on Chinese eating habits. Since Reform and Opening-up, Western practices have exerted profound influence on the living style of Chinese people. We can see that great changes have taken in the way we feed ourselves. For example, many Chinese today like to have burgers, sandwiches and coffee instead of steamed buns and soybean milk for breakfast.

Unit 1wyers practice a difficult and demanding profession. They expect to bewell compensated. I n thinking about what that means,it can help to consider the basic question,"why do we work?" Samuel Johnson supplied an obvious answer when he famously observed,"No man but a blockh ead ever wrote, except for money." But I am not being paid to write this article, and instead of la beling myself a blockhead, let me refer to the insight of eminent psychologist Theodor Reik:"W ork and love--these are the basics.Without them there is neurosis."1.

2.Why do we work? For money, but also for sanity. We expect and need to be compensated in no nmonetary ways. Noneconomic compensation matters to top-flight lawyers--otherwise,they wo uld have long ago fled to investment banks. Law firms that want to recruit and retain the best (a nd the sanest) must compensate not only in dollars but also in psychic gratification.Accordingly ,managers of elite firms need to think consciously about what lawyers are looking for beyond m oney. Here are some key noneconomic element of compensation.2.
