050831Love is tolerating his shortcomings in the same way you enjoy his merits. Love is having a happy sense when I bear hardships for him.~ Douzi (a reader) to Chang love is a story, which is told by the hearts of two beloved persons.~ 131xxxx0930 If you say my eyes are beautiful , that is because they are looking at you.Things will be fineWHEN I got married, I was still just a girl inside. At that time, I believed every single word of fairy tales, a girl who was waiting for a knight to come and make her life complete. My married life was in sharp contrast to what I imagined. To be honest, the first month of marriage was terrible. First, my parents-in-law moved in with us, and then my sister-in-law also came from Canada to visit us, with her 4-year-old son. Suddenly I was surrounded by a group of strangers. Every day, I tried my best to please them and to adjust myself to my new role as wife, daughter, sister and aunt. If I had been more outgoing, things would have been better. But I was hopelessly shy! No matter how hard I tried, I found it hard to get along with the whole family. When they were laughing and gossiping about old friends, all I could do was sit there uncomfortably with a polite smile on my face. I tried to include myself in their conversations, but I got worried and nervous about what I said.I was so miserable. I hoped for some help and support. The only person I could turn to was my husband. But he was so distant and usually came home very late. One night, after another long, painful waiting period, he finally showed up. I asked why he was coming home so late, but he only answered impatiently that he needed some time to relax. Frustrated by being rejected, I blurted out: " I made a big mistake in marrying you!" There was an awkward, painful silence. "As you wish," he finally said, storming out of the bedroom. My whole world seemed to have been shattered, and disconnected by those simple words. I couldn't believe we were still on our honeymoon.Angry tears poured out of my eyes and I rushed back to my parents' place. My mother asked what was wrong and I cried and told her the whole story. To my surprise, she said: "Young lady, this time you went too far.""Why did you say that?" I replied, "I did nothing wrong!""Really?" she said, "The truth is the man you chose to marry has changed, and as his wife you didn't even know the reason.""How could I know?" I asked, defending myself, "He didn't even talk to me.""Perhaps you've given him too much pressure," she pressed on, "Marriage is not like a fairy tale. Sometimes you have to give in a little and cope with his needs. Don't just think about yourself all the time."I realized that there was some truth in my mother's words. In those days, I had focused a lot on my own problems. Perhaps I had overlooked something important. Then I heard my mother go on in her gentle, firm voice: "Never say you want to break up unless you really mean it, because it hurts."That night I returned home and had a heart-to-heart talk with my husband. Ifinally dug out the truth. My husband's career was on edge. Because of his pride, and also because he didn't want to upset me, he chose to keep it to himself. "You don't understand," he said embarrassed, "I'm a man, and I should give you a comfortable life, but..." I looked at my husband, surprised to find that his hair had grown a bit thin. I went up to him and we hugged each other: "That's OK, everything will be fine," I said.By Xie Mengying, SichuanDon't do it out of kindnessDear Lizi,I've led a quiet life since entering university. But a week ago, I received an SMS from a girl who expressed her love for me back in high school. I was shocked to hear from her, because we hadn't been in touch for more than a year! The first time, I turned her down because I was busy preparing for the college entrance exam. But it seems she really can't forget me and wants to be my girlfriend. I don't know what to do. We contact each other a lot these days and I miss her if I don't hear from her. But I'm afraid my feelings are only a reaction to her behaviour towards me. The thing is, I don't even know her very well. But I don't want to hurt her feelings again. What should I do?ZaneI used to think there were two types of people in this world. The first was always struggling to make things happen. And the second never had to do anything because things just happened to him or her. Now I know I was wrong. Life throws things at all of us. The difference is that some people take the chance infront of them. And others fail to see their chance because they're too busy trying for perfection. Which type do you want to be, Zane? Why not stop worrying and give this brave SMS sender a chance? You'll only find out what you really feel if you get to know her and give the relationship time to grow. And don't do it out of pity or kindness for her — do it for yourself, do it because you want to give life a chance. LiziStop just doing nothingDear Lizi,I'm a shy girl and I don't know how to get along with my boyfriend. We've known each other for five years. In high school, he helped me with my lessons and comforted me when I was sad. Now we're at different colleges. During military training, he told me he loved me, and I accepted his love. But we only meet once in a long while - most of the time, we only keep in touch by phone. When we do meet, we just talk. He never touches me ?he's never even taken my hand.I don't know how to be with him like other lovers. Maybe I'm too introverted. Can you help?A ReaderAre you frustrated with your relationship or frustrated with yourself? Being shy is not a good habit. But it's easy to break. All you have to do is stop doing nothing. Have you ever wondered why he never touches you? Is it perhaps because you never touch him? Why not try it? Try pushing your relationshipforward just that little tiny bit. You may be amazed by what happens next. You may trigger the "snowball effect". You see, doll, being involved with a person is just the same as being involved in life. If you don't give, you'll never get anything back.Lizi Who, being loved, is poor?~ Oscar Wilde Nothing can maintain love longer than a mutual understanding.~ Richard (A reader) You can choose the person whom you love, but you cannot choose the personwho loves you.~ 139xxxx5285No need for you to give upDear Lizi,I'm a freshman. I was infected with Hepatitis B when I was just two years old.I have a girlfriend and we have a good relationship. But I don't think I'll ever be able to get rid of this virus, despite the efforts of medical science. She says it's OK, but before she was vaccinated a year ago, I couldn't even kiss her. I really love her and want to do everything for her, but when it comes to my illness, I often feel frustrated and hopeless. Would it be wise to give up my love and be single forever?ZorroWell, Zorro, looks like you've overcome at least two big problems. First, you've accepted your status as a Hep B carrier. And second, you've found someone who doesn't care about your disease and only cares about you. Wow! You're doing so well, why do you still feel hopeless? You'll probably carry the virus your whole life. But that doesn't mean you should give up. You're going to have to be careful about your health, but if your girlfriend has already been vaccinated, she should be pretty safe. Don't take my word for it though. Take your girl with you to a Hep B expert so you can both learn more about the facts. Then get on with your life like a normal person.LiziStop controlling thingsDear Lizi,I'm a sophomore. I made friends with a high school student over the Internet last year. He was depressed by his studies then. So I've been writing to him, encouraging him, and he's made big progress. He'll take the college entrance exam this June. But now he says he's decided to apply for my college because of me. He is so stubborn that I haven't been able to persuade him to give up this idea. My college isn't a good choice and I don't want him to regret his decision later on. What should I do to talk him out of it? AliceOh dear, not the Internet again! All Internet relationships are dreams. Without real contact, you have no control, and the guy on the other side of the computer is free to dream up whatever feelings he needs. And it sounds like he's very needy. Needy people are dangerous. If you don't want to be used, you'd betterkeep your emotional distance. I suggest you stop contacting him so often. He's surrounded by his own life. If you stop reminding him of your presence, thoughts of you and whatever you mean to him will dim very quickly. But perhaps you need his neediness. Perhaps helping him has made you feel needed. That's a nice feeling, isn't it? But, basically it is selfish and controlling. You know what he really needs, so give it to him, by letting him go.LiziDivided loveEditor's note: Our UK correspondent has sent us this story of an interracial love affair, based on his exclusive interview.STEVE met Gillian when they were both in high school. It was the first proper relationship for both of them. People never expected it to last. It was just a high school romance after all. But their relationship lasted through university.By the time they were in their mid-20s, Gillian was making it clear to Steve that she wanted to get married and start a family. One day, he invited her to go for a drive in the countryside. When they reached the coast, they got out and went for a walk along the beach. The mood was set, the time was right. Steve reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a ring: "Will you marry me?" Gillian's eyes lit up and she threw her arms around him and cried out "yes"!Everything was set for a fairy tale future and they did live happily ever after. End of story. Well, not quite. There was one big problem: Steve was Chinese and Gillian was a Westerner.Although Steve grew up in the UK, his parents — like so many other Chinese parents — expected him to marry a nice Chinese girl. His mum had been unhappy with this relationship with a gwei lou (Cantonese for foreigner) from the start. The first time Steve told his mum he was dating a Scottish girl at school, she refused to talk to him for a week. Steve worried that the woman he loved and the woman who had brought him up could not get on.But, all he wanted to do was to marry his childhood sweetheart in a big ceremony. To him, there was no point in doing anything else ?she was the only girl he wanted to be with. But that only served to make matters worse. Steve's parents wanted a traditional Chinese wedding with a banquet in a Chinese restaurant. Gillian's family wanted it in her church. In the end, following the Western tradition of the bride's parents paying for the wedding, Steve's parents did not really have a say in anything. The wedding was held in Gillian's church and most of Steve's family and friends did not attend.Steve did everything he could of course, to smooth things between his parents and his new wife. He spent every mealtime he could, training Gillian to use chopsticks and to cook Chinese food. He taught her a few words of Cantonese in the hope of making his parents happy.Steve and Gillian have been married for more than three years now. And nothing has changed. Every time his parents come to visit, they still don't like his marriage to a "foreigner". Steve wonders if his parents will ever accept and love his wife. They say love conquers all. But, Steve and Gillian and many other interracial couples in the UK are still waiting for love to bring down the cultural barrier.By Aaron PanHappiest daysIT was a rainy day and he lent me his umbrella after school. After that, I could not stop thinking of him.He was handsome and fashionable. We were in the same class and sometimes sat next to each other. I took every chance I could get to talk with him, but he was not a talkative person at all. One day, I got his phone number. I remember clearly, it was the day before National Day, 2003 and I borrowed his cellphone to send a text message to my sister. That was how I got it.The next day, I sent him a message. He didn't seem to know it was me. Wanting to make things more interesting, I told him I was my sister. That did in fact become interesting. Over the next few days, it seemed that he liked talking with her.We started sending messages to each other, talking about everything. I talked about myself. Those were some of the happiest days of my life, even though we just talked by SMS.Then, one day, I thought it was time to tell him the truth, that it was not my sister and that I was in love with him. To my surprise, he was not surprised at all!He told me that he had already thought of that a few days before. I asked him if he loved me, and waited anxiously for an answer."Good girl! I love you." When I heard these words, I was so excited I wanted to hug him at once. But, I was in another city for National Day holiday. That seven-day holiday was so long. It was very hard for me to wait till the end. He told me that he had arranged everything for me. All I could do was wait for the moment when he would be at the station to meet me. The two-hour trip by train seemed like two years. But finally, I saw him coming to me with the sweetest smile. Then we spent a happy night with each other and his close friends. We enjoyed a nice dinner, then sang songs and drank beer in a KTV room. I was the happiest girl in the world listening to him sing love songs for me.But, over the next few days, everything changed. There was no smile on his face, and he didn't talk to me much. There were no more calls and no more text messages. And, I found his former girlfriend's picture in his wallet! I asked him why, but he just told me not to touch his wallet.I cried and finally called him out for a walk one night. He told me he was not the right person for me, and that the two of us would never have any future together. I fell from the top of the world to the bottom. I hadn't the least idea of what had really happened.Almost two years have passed, but I can't get him out of my heart. We still keep in touch with each other but I know from the look in his eyes that I'm just a former classmate. I have thought about asking him to come back to me, but I'mafraid of being hurt again.Every time I miss him, I just talk to him in my heart: "I love you, but that has nothing to do with you."Take her advice: forget herDear Lizi,"Break up". It was my girlfriend's idea and it happened a month ago. No early warning, no reason – she just wanted it. But I don't understand: We were happy. After the break-up, we contacted each other every day, and she said she still missed me. But I don't know what that means. Now she's sent me a message: "forget me and look for another girlfriend". These words made me very angry, and I've decided not to contact her for a long time. What do you think I should do?Chang GongThere isn't much you can do, Gong. Apart from take her advice and forget her. Otherwise things might start getting rather messy, and who needs that? If she decided to leave you, there must have been something wrong with the relationship. Right? She was decisive enough to make the break — but now she isn't brave enough to stick to it. She says she misses you, but it's not the real you she misses, it's only her idea of you. You're letting her confusion become a noose around your neck. That will only bring you longing and bitterness. If you want to explore these pains, then keep pursuing her. But in the end, you're going to have to leave such pains behind and accept your fate in generousfashion. Then you'll be able to let go of the broken ties that bind you and fall head first into your freedom.Lizi Love is a flower seed that we must water every day so it will blossom into the most beautiful flower.~ By Li Xia (a reader)Each of us is an angel with just one wing. We embrace each other to become complete and fly up high.~ By Vitamin (a readerShe stole my heartIT was Tuesday night and we had a study session in the gymnasium as usual. It was raining heavily outside after the meeting. Fortunately I had an umbrella with me. So I offered to go with Eyre to her workplace. We were both soakedthrough after arriving. It was a mess in her office. There were plenty of tasks that needed to be done and the computer was out of order. But as luck would have it, I had my MP3 player with me. So we listened to music instead and turned to it for comfort. Icould see she was not happy that night. We listened to the song "Who would you miss when you are lonely". All of a sudden, she put her head on my shoulder. At that moment my heart began tobeat quickly. I comforted her and told her to finish the work tomorrow. While speaking to her, I could not help holding her hand. For a moment we stared into each others eyes. How romantic! It was like a love story in a film. I kissed her. She felt a little embarrassed in the beginning but did not refuse. Then we kissed each other. It was my first kiss, and I felt the most wonderful thing in my life. However, the happiness was very short. The next day, I felt very excited the whole morning when I thought of what happened the previous night. In order to be a nice man and to surprise her, I bought some oranges thatshe liked.I phoned her when I arrived outside her dorm. A moment later, she came down looking very sad. The first words she came out with were: "I'm sorry". Then she explained that she already had a boyfriend. She was out of control that night because of sadness and only wanted some comfort from a friend. I never asked her whether she had a boyfriend or not, so she didn't mention it then. She didn't want my oranges. She wanted me to forget what had happened that night andsaid we should just be good friends.I was fighting to keep my tears back. My heart became cold and I nodded without saying a single word then turned and left. I could not control myself anymore and cried the bitterest tears in my life when she was out of sight. That night without having dinner, I lay on my bed listening to music with darkness around me. I wished I'd never been born. I wished I'd never come to this college and met her. I couldn't forget her because I loved her so deeply. But I had to forget her because I didn't want to destroy her happiness. I felt as if Iwas dying. Now two months have passed. I keep dreaming about her every night. Each night when I go to bed, I feel like sending a message to her but I don't have the courage. What I wish now is that time will wash away the memory. I don't expect she will love me or come to me one day, I only want to forget my strongfeelings for her, little by little, day by day.But still, it seems that there is nothing that can make me happy and active again. She not only took my first kiss away but also my heart If you don't want to, then don't do itDear Lizi,I'm a sophomore. A few days ago, my classmate Lily came to me for some advice. I didn't know what to say, so I'm writing to you. Lily has been with her boyfriend for two years, and she loves him very much. But now her boyfriend wants to have sex with her. Lily has refused. But she doesn't know what to do. She's still a virgin and not yet ready for sex. But she thinks that if she keeps on refusing her boyfriend, it might hurt their relationship. Any advice?KarenIf she doesn't want to do it, she shouldn't do it. Sure, sex is nice and it brings you closer to your partner, but it's just sex! If you're a youngster just starting out on your sexual journey, there are a few things you should know to keep you out of trouble (for example, use a condom and be sure you trust your partner). Beyond that, it's all up to you. No one but you decides. Modern society (and film) has completely changed this simple act of being close. It's made it into something really dramatic. Can't we be more sensible about it? If Lily's notready, it's no big deal. Her boyfriend should be able to accept this. Meanwhile, they should also seriously consider such things as traditional moral values and if they are ready to take the responsibility.Lizi Forget about it, and it's not that evilDear Lizi,I like a girl called Kilth very much. She's my best friend and we respect each other a lot. Sometimes I masturbate. I think masturbating is normal. But once while I was masturbating, I started thinking of Kilth. I even imagined having sex with her. How terrible! Since then, whenever I see Kilth, I get really nervous and feel like I've done something very, very evil to her. How can I get rid of this strange feeling? Where does this feeling come from? Please help!Mike LeeI don't get it. Don't all boys think about having sex while they're flying their littleairplanes? Isn't that what you're supposed to do? So why are you so upset, Mikey boy? And why do you think having sex with Kilth, or even thinking about it, is evil? There's nothing evil about it — sex is normal, just like masturbation. What I think you have to do is work out your feelings for Kilth. She's your best friend. Do you want more from her? If you do, you're going to have to start talking to her about love. But if you want to keep her as a friend, you might have to get yourself a proper girlfriend. When you've done that, you shouldn't need tocrash your yoghurt truck so much any more!Love is composed of a single soul inhabiting two bodies. ~137xxxx7554Love can be said without speaking; love can be heard without listening. ~Wendy G (A reader)Love is a balmy wind that soothes pain and anxiety in the tempests of life. ~Zhang Jie (A reader) I t conquers great distancesShen Zhihua, of Nanjing University of Technology, will go to Australia for further study in July. My book and pencils were lying on the ground, neglected, as I talked with the girl attentively.I fell in love with her at first sight. Her name was Miao Qi and her image was burned into my memory as soon as we began to talk. During the two hoursat English corner, Miao Qi and I chatted about studies, exams, and the future. Those two hours changed my life forever. Then love came only four moths before my departure for Melbourne University. I never imagined I would meet the girl of my dreams that night in that place. We grew closer to each other in the following months after that first meeting.Every day I sent messages to her. I also called her to hear her sweet voice. She enjoyed the attention that I gave her. Her bright eyes sparkled as I called her, even though she was a little bit shy and was reserved. Both of us like climbing and every Sunday morning, Zijin Mountain was our destination. We enjoyed the fresh air and the quiet of the woods. At the end of a stone path, we clearly knew that there was love.Hands in hand, and eyes gazing longingly at each other, I felt my honey say "I love you" even though she didn't really say anything at that moment. Can eyes speak? Can hearts appreciate? Absolutely! I could feel love with my heart.Next month, on July 14, I'll leave for Melbourne University in Australia. I'll be there one year. But I know this is the start, not the end, of our love. That night at the English corner and the woods on Zijin Mountain will be in my mind forever.Though there will be a great distance between us, we still understand and support each other because we love each other deeply. It is a love that can conquer distance. We grew with the love, and we learned to take care of each other and take responsibility. The message took me back to when we were still at college.I met him by chance during my first year at college. After that first meeting, we often met. He was handsome, humorous and considerate and gradually entered my life. A year later, his department moved to another campus. He visited me on weekends and each time we had a good time together. So little timeWe kept in touch and grew close. Occasionally we talked about the future and realized we would enter the real world soon. Then I was accepted for postgraduate studies at another university and he found a good job in his hometown. I knew we would have to go our separate ways in June 2003.Time seemed so limited and we cherished it all the more. At the beginning of the last semester, he suggested an outing together. Then, suddenly, SARS hit. We were isolated and had no chance to go on our outing, or even to meet. The plan for the outing would have to remain a dream forever. While we were quarantined, he phoned me every day. It was great each time, picking up the receiver and hearing his kind voice. The calls went on for more than two months until we graduated. Then news came that the graduation ceremony would be held on his campus.I can't describe my feelings when I saw him that day. It seemed like a dream, but it really was true. The time was so short after the ceremony. We just used the chance to have a picture taken together – the only one we'd been able to take since meeting. Before I left, we promised to keep in contact and we told each other that, whatever difficulty came our way, we would never let go of our friendship. It's now been almost two years and we're in different cities but still keep in touch. Although my special feelings for him have been given to another boy, I can't deny that they truly existed once. And I know that once there was a boy who cared for me and helped me. They're now in Zhejiang, happily together again. We met each other at Zhengzhou University in 2001. He was a shy boy but he expressed his feelings to me bravely on August 17, after he had watched me for half a year. At that time, I had a year until graduation and he was in his second year.Because of his sunny, honest smile, I didn't immediately say no. The following days, we were together almost all day long, studying, eating, playing or just wandering through life.He tried to find any excuse to be with me and I also didn't bother to see through his funny, simple, naive schemes. Several weeks later, I accepted。

Are these products selling well? Complete the chart below.Salesperson 1OK, our new subzero sleeping bag here has a patented design, and it has revolutionary filling. We've had it tested by hikers and campers in subzero temperatures. And they're not only happy with the warmth, but they're also very pleased with how light it is. Now, our bags also take up less room than the bulkier, heavier sleeping bags you're used to, so campers don't have to sacrifice any of their equipment. We found that people who are new to hiking didn't like the term "subzero" because the idea of being outdoors when it's that cold is not very appealing. So, now we just emphasize how warm and lightweight it is, and it's selling better than any other sleeping bag!Salesperson 2You know, I first thought that this compact, portable electronic dictionary was going to sell really well—especially with the back-to-school market. You know, all school kids need to check a dictionary, right? Well, it Just doesn't seem to be taking off. I'm finding out that more and more kids these days have computers. And you know that computers have software with dictionaries, and most word-processing programs have spell check. Then I thought, "OK, there are still people who like to write the old-fashioned way, with pen and paper." Well, a number of those people have told me that they still like the old-fashioned dictionaries, too.Salesperson 3We sell this really neat remote-control device that sends out a signal to start your car. It even lets you heat it up before you have to go out. That's a really great feature in the winter. So often, you know, people complain about how long it takes to warm up the car. People hate being cold . . . and they hate having to wait even more! This gizmo sells really well during the winter holidays.Section C QuestionnaireDirections: Listen to a dialogue between a market researcher and a consumer. As you listen, complete the form with the information you hear.Woman: Yes?Man: Oh, good morning, Madam. I'm from Pestaway Market Research. I'm doingconsumer research in this area. I wonder if you'd mind telling me—do you use Pestaway in your home?Woman: Pestaway? Oh—the insecticide thing. Well, yes, as a matter of fact, I do,Man: What do you use it for. Madam? Fleas, ants, cockroaches, woodworm?Woman: Oh, cockroaches. This is an old house, you see, and we often get cockroaches in the kitchen. I tried scrubbing and disinfecting but it didn't seem to be much good, and then 1 heard a commercial about Pestaway, so I thought I'd try that.Man: Was that on 'IV?Woman: No, it was radio—one of those early morning shows.Man: You heard it advertised on the radio. Fine. And you say you use it in the kitchen. Do you use it anywhere else in the house? In the bathroom, say?Woman: Oh, no we've never had any trouble anywhere else. We get the odd wasp in the summer sometimes, but I don't bother about them. It's the cockroaches I don't like—nasty, creepy-crawly things.Man: And you find Pestaway does the trick?Woman: Well, yes, it's quite good. It gets rid of most of them. Man: How long have you been using it, Madam?Man: Every six weeks or so. I see. Where do you buy your Pestaway, Madam?Supermarket? Chemist?Woman: Oh, no. I get it at the litde shop at the end of this street. They stock practically everything. It means taking a bus if I want to go to the supermarket.Man: Well, thank you very much. Madam. I had a very good job with the Post Office, but what with a husband to look after and four children to bring up, itdoesn't leave you much time, does it?Man: Occupation—"housewife". Well, thank you very much for your time, Madam. You've been most helpful.Part III Listening Comprehension TestDirections:In this section, you will hear two talks. Complete the sentences and answer the questions below. You will hear each talk twice. At the end of each talk therewill be a 3-minute pause, during which time you are asked to write down youranswers briefly. You now have 25 seconds to read the questions or sentencesbelow.Talk OnePackaging is an important form of advertising. A package can sometimes motivate someone to buy a product. For example, a small child might ask for a breakfast food that comes in a box with a picture of a TV character. The child is more interested in the picture than in the breakfast food. Pictures for children to color or cut out, games printed on a package, or small gifts inside a box also motivate many children to buy products—or to ask their parents for them. Some packages suggest that a buyer will get something for nothing. Food products sold in reusable containers are examples of this. Although a similar product in a plain container might cost less, people often prefer to buy the product in a reusable glass or dish, because they believe the container is free. However, the cost of the container is added to the cost of the product. The size of a package also motivates a buyer. Maybe the package has "Economy Size" or "Family Size" printed on it. This suggests that the large size has the most product for the least money. But that is not always true. To find out, a buyer has to know how the product is sold and the price of the basic unit. The information on the package should provide some answers. But the important thing for any buyer to remember is that a package is often an advertisement. The words and pictures do not tell the whole story. Only the product inside can do that.Question 1. According to the passage, what is the meaning of the word "motivate"? Question 2. What does 'A buyer will get something for nothing" most probably mean? Question 3. Why do people prefer to buy the product in a reusable glass or dish?Talk TwoMarshall Field's, a department store in Chicago, has long used the motto: "Give the lady what she wants." Finding out what the customer wants is one of the problems marketing research tries to solve. Marketing research has been defined as trying to analyze marketing problems scientifically. It studies people as buyers and sellers, examining their habits, attitudes, preferences, dislikes, and purchasing power. It often studies specific groups of people, such as teenagers, high-income groups, or senior citizens.Marketing research is divided into a number of sub-areas. Advertising research attempts to find out the effectiveness of advertising. It also seeks to learn the best media for advertising specific products: television, newspapers, radio, magazines, billboards, and others. Market analysis tries to identify and measure markets for specific products and to estimate sales potential. Markets may be differentiated by population groups or by geography. Some types of clothing are more likely to sell in Florida and California than in the northern Midwest. Some cosmetics will appeal more to black customers than to white customers. Performance analysis helps a company learn how well it is meeting its goals of sales and profits. Product research covers the whole area of new product development.Marketing research is an expensive undertaking, and its costs are built into the prices of products.Unit 14 About HealthSection A Talking about SymptomsDirections: Listen to the conversations. Or clean the house. You can go to the shopping mall and walk fast.Fourth, people say they're tired. "I'm too tired to exercise. I'll exercise when I have more energy." But exercise gives you energy. Most people feel too tired because they don't exercise. The solution? Exercise every day. Take a walk. Go for a bike ride. Run around the block. You'll feel great! And you won't feel tired. Finally, some people feel embarrassed. "I feel silly exercising. I don't have a great body." Listen to this solution: Don't feel bad; you should feel great! You're taking care of your body. Little by little, you will feel better. Just do it!You have heard the five reasons why people don't exercise. (10 points)The vital role of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) in boosting innovation and driving economic growth has never been more apparent than in today's globalized world. IPR provides a legal framework 1 enforcing ownership rights over creations of the mind, allowing inventors, artists, and businesses to protect their work from unauthorized use.2 the rapid development of information and communication technologies, the protection of IPR is facing new challenges. The advent of digital technology and the Internet has made it easier to reproduce and distribute creative products,3 opening the door to rampant piracy. This has dealt a severe blow to the revenue streams of rights holders across various industries.4 combating piracy and upholding IPR, governments, law enforcement agencies, and international organizations have been5 their efforts. They have established stricter laws and regulations, established specialized IPR courts, and launched campaigns to raise public awareness6 IPR protection.7, IPR infringement seems to be a never-ending battle. Have you wished you were better at making a conversation? A great conversationalist is someone who connects with people and makes them feel important. When they talk to you, they make you feel like you're the only person in the room.Becoming a good conversationalist requires knowing three things: first, how to start a conversation; second, how to keep it going; and third, how to end it.Starting a conversation usually means coming up with an opening line or ice breaker. The best kind of ice breaker is one that's positive. A compliment is always a good ice breaker and will usually be appreciated. Any news event is a good ice breaker. The fact is, any opening line will do, as long as it's not negative, and as long as it's not a lie. The best way to entice a person to have a conversation with you is by being sincere and respectful, and letting them know that you are interested in talking to them.Once you've got a conversation going, the best way to keep it going is by asking the other person questions that don't require just a yes or no answer. Ask questions similar to those a reporter might ask to draw a person out; who, what, when, where, why and how questions. You keep asking questions based on the last thing a person says. This is called the "elaboration technique". Once you hit on something you find interesting, keep asking questions in order to get the person to elaborate about the topic as much as possible. A good conversationalist elaborates on the experiences they've had. Instead of saying the party was fun, tell why it was fun. Describe why you had a good time—who was there, what happened, where it was, and how people arranged the party. Go into detail. Description is the best form of communication because it keeps people's interest up and stimulates them.If you started a conversation with another person, and you're having difficulty ending it, there are several signals you can send to the other person that will bring the conversation to its close without hurting anyone's feelings.Breaking eye contact is a discreet signal that the conversation is about to end. Another way to signal is to use transition words like well, or at any rate. You may want to recap all that was said. Whatever you do, don't lie to the other person. If you're not interested in talking to them again, don't mention the possibility of a future meeting just to be polite. That's hypocritical. Instead, you may want to say, "Nice meeting you." And then, leave. Finally, be sure to give the other person a good, firm handshake. The final impression you make can be just as important as the initial one you made.First StoryMy husband and I met in high school. During our senior year, we studies biology together. We talked and laughed a lot during class. One Friday, we Joked that we should go on a date that night. At first, I didn't know if he was serious. He didn't know if I was joking. That night I put on a new dress and waited. He had a more difficult time. He had to knock on the door without knowing if I would be ready or not. But he knocked, and I was ready! That was our first date. This year, we celebrated our fortieth wedding anniversary'Second StoryMy husband and I met one day at an airport. It was Christmas day. I was picking up my friend Bernd. He was coming from Germany to spend the holidays with my family. While we were waiting for his luggage, I heard a man speaking in Italian. I decided to say something to him because I speak Italian.I said, "Buon Natale" which means, "Merry Christmas!" When I spoke in Italian, he said, "Mama mia! Why do you speak Italian? Who are you?" He asked me for my phone number. He called me the next day, and we dated for a year. Then we got married. So be careful who you talk to in the airport!Third StoryMy wife and I met through our parents. Our parents arranged our marriage. Before we got married, my wife and I wanted to meet. Our parents arranged our first meeting in a restaurant. That night, we talked about ourselves and what we wanted in our lives. We talked for hours. We shared our hopes and dreams. After a while, we decided that our parents were right! And we got married.Fourth StoryMy wife and 1 met through a matchmaker. I'm an engineer, and in my field, most people are men. I couldn't meet any women at work. So one day I saw an advertisement for a matchmaking service, and I decided to call. The matchmaker introduced me to many nice women. I enjoyed meeting them, but I didn't meet anyone I wanted to marry. Finally, she introduced me to my wife. I decided not to date any other women because I liked her very much. We enjoyed the same things, and we laughed a lot together. We also had the same goals and values in life. My wife and I were married six years ago, and now we have two children. I'm glad I picked up the phone and called that matchmaker!Among married couples in the U.S., one finds a wide range of living patterns. Some older couples still have traditional marriages, with the man as breadwinner and the woman as homemaker. But most younger women today are not content to be full-time homemakers. The women's liberation movement, which swept the country in the 1960s, changed attitudes and behavior forever. Today's young American woman wants marriage, but she also wants her own identity. She wants what men have always had—a marriage that is important but still allows time to pursue individual goals. The maJority of American wives, even those with children, work outside the home- As a result, the older idea that housework, cooking, and child care are "women's work" is being discarded. In the contemporary American marriage, the husband and wife share both financial and domestic responsibilities.Sharing money-making and housekeeping responsibilities provides a better life for the family. Of course, problems can develop in the two-income family if the husband expects his working wife to be the perfect homemaker that his stay-at-home mother was- Also, there may be arguments if the wife expects her husband to help with household chores, but he is unwilling to do so. In most families, the working wife probably still handles the largest share of the housework, cooking, and child care. but she gets some help from her husband. The contemporary American marriage is also characterized by a relationship of equality and shared decision making. Most American women today will not tolerate a husband who considers himself the boss. The American girl is given freedom and education equal to a boy's. After completing her education, she is able to get a job and support herself. She does not need to marry for financial security. She is self-sufficient and will not accept a submissive role in marriage. When husband and wife are able to share decision making and respect each other's viewpoints, their marriage is probably closer than those of past generations. When they battle for dominance, they're likely to end up in divorce court.“Ring out the old, ring in the new,” wrote Alfred, Lord Tennyson, the nineteenth-century English poet. And that's exactly what Americans do every December 31. New Year's Eve is a time for noise and fun- At home or in restaurants, most Americans drink and dine with friends- At midnight on New Year's Eve, bells ring, horns blow, and friends toast each other with champagne. It's also customary to exchange kisses. New Year's Eve festivities often continue until two or three o'clock in the morning. Many people travel from one party to another to celebrate with several different groups of friends The country's most crowded New Year's Eve celebration takes place in New York City's Times Square. Since 1907, the famous ball-lowering ceremony has been a holiday highlight. To celebrate the arrival of the year 2000, an estimated 2 million people crowded into Times Square, and hundreds of million viewed the scene on TV The huge, 1,070-pound lighted crystal ball began its descent from a 77-foot flagpole at 11:59 p.m. and reached the bottom at exactly midnight. Simultaneously, confetti, balloons, and fireworks brightened the night sky. It was the biggest public event ever held in the city. What do Americans do on New Year's Day? Many sleep late because they stayed up all night long. Many watch TV which offers spectacular parades and football games between champion college teams. From ancient times to the present. New Year's customs have been connected with saying good-bye to the past and looking forward to a better future. Therefore, New Year's Day often inspires people to start new programs and give up bad habits. Some people make New Year's resolutions. People talk about "turning over a new leaf", referring to a clean, blank page or a fresh start. Typical New Year's resolutions are to spend less money, give up smoking, begin a diet, or be nicer to others. It's safe to assume that about half of them are forgotten by January 31'It was a cool autumn evening. Mrs. Brown was sitting in her living room, reading. "Have fun, and don't play any pranks."Every year on October 31. Halloween scenes like this occur throughout the USA. American children love to dress up in costumes and go trick-or-treating. If an adult refuses to supply a treat—candy, cookies, fruit, or money— the children may play a trick. Typical Halloween pranks are soaping windows, writing on doors with crayons, overturning garbage cans, sticking pins into doorbells to keep them ringing, throwing raw eggs, and spraying shaving cream on cars and friends.Halloween is celebrated by nearly all American children, and over 70% of adults also participate in some Halloween activity. College students and other young adults may attend masquerade parties or Halloween parades. Many families carve pumpkins and decorate the outside of their homes with the traditional Halloween symbols. Businesses get into the act, too. Store windows display jack-o'-lanterns, scarecrows, and witches. Servers in restaurants and salespeople in supermarkets and bookstores are often in costume. Take care. Most people know that exercise is important. But many people don't exercise. In this announcement you will hear the five most common reasons why people don't exercise. You will also hear some easy solutions. The first problem? No time. "I don't have any time to exercise. I'm too busy." But you don't need a lot of time to exercise. Short periods of exercise are just as good as long periods of exercise. The solution? You should take two or three short walks every day. For example, ten minutes in the morning, ten minutes at lunch, and ten minutes after dinner.Next, money. "I don't have money to go to a gym. 1 don't have money to buy expensive shoes." No problem. You don't have to spend money to exercise. All you need is a street and comfortable clothes. Our solution? Walk. Don't drive. For instance, walk to the store, to the library, to the bank. Walking is free and easy. The third most common reason is bad weather. "It's raining. It's too hot. It's snowing." Here's a solution. Exercise inside. For example, turn on some music. Dance. More importantly, you have heard five solutions to overcome these problems. Now that you have heard this message, go out and exercise! Good luck.。

If you're invited to an American friend's home for dinner, keep in mind these general rules for polite behavior.First of all, arrive approximately on time(but not early).Americans expect promptness. Being a few minutes late might give the host more time to get dressed or finish preparing the dinner,so it's OK to be10 or15minutes late but not45minutes late. Dinner might be overcooked and ruined by then. When you're invited to someone's home for a meal,it's polite to bring a small gift.Flowers or candies are always appropriate. If you have an attractive item made in your native country, your host would certainly enjoy receiving that as a gift.If you are served some food that you don't like or can't eat, don't make a fuss about it.If your host doesn't say anything about what you aren't eating, then you shouldn't,either.Simply eat what you can and hope that no one notices what you left. If you are questioned, you may have to admit that you don't eat meat(or whatever),but you can also say that you've enjoyed the other foods and have had"more than enough"to eat.Don't make the host feel obliged to prepare something else for you.Be sure to compliment the host on the food that you enjoyed.Don't leave immediately after dinner, but don't overstay your welcome, either. When your friend seems to be getting tired and running out of conversation, take their behavior as a cue to leave. The next day, call or write a thank-you note to say how much you enjoyed the evening.如果你被邀请到美国朋友的家里吃饭,请记住这些一般的礼貌行为准则。

She primarily speaks to students in health classes, but sometimes the school will arrange for her to speak to several different groups of girls. Her biggest concern is the emphasis American culture places on thinness and the negative way that affects girls today. Jody has a Ph.D. in nutrition, but, more important, she has personal experience. Her mother taught her to diet when she was only 8 years old. Jody has created several different presentations, which she gives to different types of audiences and she tries to establish an emotional connection with the students so that they will feel comfortable asking questions or talking to her privately. She shows them pictures and images from popular culture of beautiful women and explains how computers are used to make the women look even more thin and "beautiful" than they are in real life. She describes how the definition of beauty has changed over the years and even from culture to culture. She then talks about health issues and the physical damage that can occur as a result of dieting. Finally, she addresses self-respect and the notion that a person's sense of beauty must include more than how much a person weighs. Sometimes Jody feels that she succeeds in persuading some students to stop dieting; other times she feels that she fails.一、重要单词1. nutrition [nuˈtrɪʃn] n. 营养,营养学;营养品“nutrition”在文中指“营养”或“营养学”。

UINT 1 SECTION CHave you wished you were better at making a conversation? Describe why you had a good time—who was there, what happened, where it was, and how peoplearranged the party. Go into detail. Description is the best form of communication because it keeps people's interest up and stimulates them.If you started a conversation with another person, and you're having difficulty ending it, there are several signals you can send to the other person that will bring the conversation to its close without hurting anyone's feelings.Breaking eye contact is a discreet signal that the conversation is about to end.Another way to signal is to use transition words like well, or at any rate. You may want to recap all that was said. Whatever you do, don't lie to the other person. If you're not interested in talking to them again, don't mention the possibility of a future meeting just to be polite. That's hypocritical. Instead, you may want to say, "Nice meeting you."And then, leave. Finally, be sure to give the other person a good, firm handshake. The final impression you make can be just as important as the initial one you made.UINT 3 SECTION BFirst StoryMy husband and I met in high school. During our senior year, we studies biology together. We talked and laughed a lot during class. One Friday, we Joked that we should go on a date that night. At first, I didn't know if he was serious. He didn't know if I was joking. Dance. More importantly, you have heard five solutions to overcome these problems. Now that you have heard this message, go out and exercise! Good luck.。

Unit 1 Famous PeopleAs the owner of a small business selling software I find it hard to recruit good people in today‘s tight labor market and having got people on board, there is an equally, if not more difficult task of keeping them happy.Staff turnover is a real problem. Twoyears ago our staff turnover at Epmus plc was out of control. We were consistentlylosing staff across the spectrumfrom clerical workers to senior managers, Butour real worry was the skilled technical people who were leaving us. They comprised a bulk of our work force so we brought in a group of consultants to help usfigure out why they were leaving. It wasn‘t too difficult to see what had gone wrong. Getting new recruits to deal with clients without any specialist training wasn‘t a g ood idea. We were putting our staff in an unfair position, especially when they had to reach sales targets. Nor was the system of evaluating employee performance only once a year a good idea. It meant we won ' t pick up potential problems early enough. So having conducted our assessment we established a formal plan to retain the people who had worked so hard to recruit and hire. We laid out specific steps for communicating with ourstaff. Firstly, every year we close down the company and invite our entire staff to an off-site meeting. We talk shop and it gives us a chance to reinforce what the company vision is. It is after allessential that everyone is aware of where we are goingand what we have to achieve. Then to build on this ground work, the session managers send e-mail messages every 3 months to describe any modifications there have been to that division, as the process took hold we noticed that doing this quarterly wasn‘t adequate. As a result i now have a meeting once a week with the managers whoare directly responsible to me to review and revise their department goals. However, in my view, communicating theplan of where the company is headed is something let medown on a continual basis ever amid the often chaotic day-to-day undertakings of our fast-growing company. I think that this jogs to the memory or to be incorporated into every CEOs usual interaction with their staff. Our staff turnover ratehas fallen to just over 30 percent this yearwhich we were very pleased with. And thesteps we took might prove useful to other entrepreneurs. There are key things that need to be done. For example, set up meetings every 3 months or so with your most important personnel and use these occasions to provide feedback, and talk about any problems the staff may have. In addition, make sure new recruits are put through a proper 2-week training period and spend time with a mentor who has been formally delegated to look after them and answer their questions. Also when looking to retain staff, don‘t just focus on compensation. Bear in mind that when it comes to keeping people you need to show publicity that you value their contribution. There are also other methods of rewarding staff who stay with you, such as stock options and in the long term our goal is for all employees to be receiving these.Unit 2 Growing PainsYouth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind. It is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of deep springs of life.Youth means temperamental predominance of courage over timidity, of the appetite for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in aman of 60 more than in a boy of 20. Nobody grows older merely by the number of years. We grow older by deserting our ideals.Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turn the spirit back to dust.Whether 60 or 16, there is in every human being‘s hear t the lureof wonder, the unfailing childlike appetite of what‘s next, and the joy of the game of living. In the cente r of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station; so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, courage and power from man and from the infinite, so long are you young. When the aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old, even at 20; but as long as the aerials are up, to catch waves of optimism, there is hope that you may die young at 80.Unit 3 Sports and GamesPlay is very important for humans from birth to death. Play is not meant to be just for children. It is a form of freedom and connectionthat can tap into your creativity, and can allow you the chance to find your inner child and the inner child of others. I have collected the top five benefits of play here.Play can stimulate you to think differently. It can go against all the rules, and change the same old boring way of doing things. Walt Disney was devoted to play, and his willingness to oppose the common wisdom changed the world of entertainment. The next time you are stuckin a fixed and boring way of life, pull out a box of color pencils, modeling clay, glue and scissors, and invite your inner child out and break free. You will be amazed at the way your thinking shifts the new world of discovery.Playing can bring greater joy into your life. What do you think the world would be like-if every human spent time each day in play? I bet just asking you this question has brought a smile to your face. Play creates laughter, joy, entertainment, and a feeling of inner peace. Starting today, try to get 30 minutes each day to engage in some form of play, and watch your joy factor rise!Play is known to reduce stress. Studies show that, as humans, play is part of our nature. We have the need to play because it isinstinctive and basic to human existence. With regular play, our problem-solving and adaptive abilities will be in much better shape to handle this complex world, and we are much more likely to choose healthy answers to challenging situations as they arise. It creates laughter and freedom that can instantly reduce stress and add a feeling of relaxation to our daily living.Play can stimulate the imagination, curiosity (18), and creativity. Research shows that play is both a ?hands-on' and ?minds-on' learning process. It produces a deeper, more meaningful understanding of the world and its possibilities. We begin giving meaning to life through story making, and playing out various possible situations.Unit 4 Culture and Corporate CultureSome of the best American companies today have turned themselves upside down. They‘ve found the old top-down pyramid style management chart doesn‘t work. So they‘ve flipped the pyramid over, giving employees more say in what goes on. And it works, as evidenced in improved sales and earnings.Interested in inverting the pyramid in your operation? Here are some tips:Challenge employees to come up with their own better ways to do their jobs, You may be surprised at how valuable some of their suggestions are.Seek out ideas from everyone, not just those who have a direct involvement with the job,Sometimes good ideas come from unlikely resources.Tr eat employees with honesty and respect. Don‘t dictate to them if they are not going to have their ideas enacted. Explain the reasons that underline a decision or policy.Spread authority around. If the largest part of the pyramid is to be at the top, the top people should have authority. At one auto plant any worker who sees a problem can shut down the whole assembly line until the problem is solved. By giving employees more control over their work environment and more involvement in running their jobs, you tap into a valuable source of ideas and productivity—and that pays off for everyone.Unit 5 Science and TechnologyRight Reverend Lord HARRIES(Member, House of Lords; Former Bishop, Oxford for the Church of England): Now you ask, what is the relationship between scientific theory and Christianfaith? The simplest way of thinking is to say, well, they're really answering different questions.Science is trying to address the question, how do things happen. And in answer to that, you get the theory of evolution. Things happened over millions and millions of years by a very gradual process through natural causes.PALCA: But Harries says if you ask why did things happen, then you get a completely different answer. It's the why of life that belongs in the spiritual domain. Harries says the problems some religions have with Darwin and evolution come from a literal interpretation of the Bible. And he says, while the Bible contains profound truths, it's not word for word true.Right Rev. Lord HARRIES: First of all, take the issue of the age of the Earth. I mean, do people really think that the universe is only4,000 years old where every science - chemistry, paleontology, physics, astronomy- every single science points with huge amounts of evidence to the Earth being billions of years old and the universe being even more billions of years old.So you just have to ask people, what do they make - do they think that the vast majority of scientists in every scientific discipline on Earth are liars?PALCA: In the beginning - in other words, in 1859 when "On theOrigin of Species" was published, the church was uncomfortable with Darwin's theories. But clearly, that position has changed. So much so that recently, a spokesman for the Church of England wrote an article saying the church might owe Darwin an apology for its initial resistance to evolution. The Rev. Dr. Malcolm Brown says some people misread his comments to say the church was, in fact, apologizing.Reverend Dr. MALCOLM BROWN(Director of Mission and Public Affairs, Church of England): I suggested than an apology might be owed, which isa slightly different thing. I don't have the authority to make it.My point was that by raising doubts about Darwin at the beginning, by getting our first reaction wrong, even though as the Church of England, we pretty quickly got OK with Darwin, we legitimized,to some extent, later movements, particularly in the States in the early 20th century, to raise creationism as an ideology and make Darwina whipping boy.Unit 6 LiteratureThere are many theories about the beginning of drama in ancient Greece. The one most widely accepted today is based on the assumptionthat drama evolved from ritual. The argument for this view goes as follows. In the beginning, human beings viewed the natural forces of the world –even the seasonal changes as unpredictable, and they sought through various means tocontrol these unknown and feared power. Those measures which appeared to bring the desired results were then retainedand repeated until they hardened into fixed rituals. As time passed some rituals were explained or veiled the mysteries of the rites. As time passed some rituals were abandoned, but the stories, later called myths, persisted and provided material for art and drama. Those who believe that drama evolved out of ritual also argue that those rites contained the seed of theater because music, dance, masks, and customers were almost used. Furthermore, a suitable site had to be provided for performances and when the entire community did not participate, a clear division was usually made between the ― acting area ‖ and the ― auditorium ‖. In addition, there were performers, and since considerable importance was attached to avoiding mistakes in the enactment of rites, religious leader usually assumed that task, wearing masks and costumes often impersonated other people, animals, or supernatural beings, and mimed the desired effect –success in hunt or battle, the coming rain, the revival of the Sun –as an actor might. Eventually such dramatic representations were separated from religious activities.Another theory traces the theater ' s origin from the humaninterest instorytelling. According to this view tales ( about the hunt , war, or other feats ) aregradually elaborated at first through the use of impersonation, action, anddialogue by a narrator and then through the assumption of each of the roles by adifferent person. A closely related theory traces theater to those dances that are primarily rhythmical and gymnastic or that are imitations if animal movements and sounds.。

A Brush with the Law I have only once been in trouble with the law. The whole process of being arrested and taken to court was a rather unpleasant experience at the time, but it makes a good story now. What makes it rather disturbing was the arbitrary circumstances both of my arrest and my subsequent fate in court. In happened in February about twelve years ago. I had left school a couple of months before that and was not due to go to university until the following October. I was still living at home at the time. One morning I was in Richmond, a suburb of London near where I lived. I was looking for a temporary job so that I could save up some money to go travelling. As it was a fine day and I was in no hurry, I was taking my time, looking in shop windows, strolling in the park, and sometimes just stopping and looking around me. It must have been this obvious aimlessness that led to my downfall. It was about half past eleven when it happened. I was just walking out of the local library, having unsuccessfully sought employment there, when I saw a man walking across the road with the obvious intention of talking to me. I thought he was going to ask me the time. Instead, he said he was a police officer and he was arresting me. At first I thought it was some kind of joke. But then another policeman appeared, this time in uniform, and I was left in no doubt. 'But what for?' I asked. "Wandering with intent to commit an arrestable offence,' he said. 'What offence?' I asked. 'Theft,' he said. 'Theft of what?' I asked. 'Milk bottles,' he said, and with a perfectly straight face too! 'Oh,' I said. It turned out there had been a lot of petty thefts in the area, particularly that of stealing milk bottles from doorsteps. Then I made my big mistake. At the time I was nineteen, had long untidy hair, and regarded myself as part of the sixties' 'youth countercultrue. As a result, I want to appear cool and unconcerned with the incident, so I said, 'How long have you been following me?' in the most casual and conversation tone I could manage. I thus appeared to them to be quite familiar with this sort of situation, and it confirmed them in their belief that I was a thoroughly disreputable character. A few minutes later a police car arrived. 'Get in the back," they said. 'Put your hands on the back of the front seat and don't move them.' They got in on either side of me. I wasn't funny any more. At the police station they questioned me for several hours. I continued to try to look worldly and au fait with the situation. When they asked me what I had been doing, I told them I'd been looking for a job. 'Aha,' I could see them thinking,'unemployed'. Eventually, I was officially charged and told to report to Richmond Magistrates' Court the following Monday. Then they let me go. I wanted to conduct my own defence in court, but as soon as my father found out what had happened, he hired a very good solicitor. We went along that Monday armed with all kinds of witnesses, including my English teacher from school as a character witness. But he was never called on to give evidence. My 'trial' didn't get that far. The magistrate dismissed the case after fifteen minutes. I was free. The poor police had never stood a chance. The solicitor even succeeded in getting costs awarded against the police. And so I do not have a criminal record. But what was most shocking at the time was the things my release from the charge so clearly depended on. I had the 'right' accent, respectable middle-class parents in court, reliable witnesses, and I could obviously afford a very good solicitor. Given the obscure nature of the charge, I feel sure that if I had come from a different background, and had really been unemployed, there is every chance that I would have been found guilty. While asking for costs to be awarded, my solicitor's case quite obviously revolved around the fact that I had a 'brilliant academic record'. Meanwhile, just outside the courtroom, one of the policemen who had arrested me was gloomily complaining to my mother that another youngster had been turned against the police. 'You could have been a bit more helpful when we arrested you,' he said to me reproachfully. What did the mean? Presumably that I should have looked outraged and said something like, 'Look here, do you know who you're talking to? I am a highly successful student with a brilliant academic record. How dare you arrest me!' Then they, presumably, would have apologized, perhaps even taken off their caps, and let me on my way. UNIT 25What’s She Like?Describing the Appearance and Character of People IntroductionIn your everyday life, you usually have to answer questions such as “What’s so-and-so like?”This question doesn’t mean that you have to exactly describe the appearance of thisperson. The best way to answer this kind of question is to point out what kind of person he orshe is and then maybe the characteristics of his or her appearance. To ask about a person’s 5appearance specifically, the question “What does so-and-so look like?”is usually used.Consider the following clues in describing people.Physical description: general personal impression, age, height, face, clothes and so on.Other characteristics: personality, job, interests or hobbies, their life history, achievements, family and so on.Make sure you realize that the description of a person or place should be tactful. It is extremely rude to say to someone something like this: “You are a narrow-minded overweightmiddle-aged person!”5Part One Listening InKen: Hello?Mary: Hi, Ken. It’s Mary, Mary Graham.Ken: Oh hi, Mary. How are you?Mary: I’m fine. How are you?Ken: Fine.Mary: Listen, um... I want to ask you some questions about Jim Wilson—you know him, don’t you?Ken: Sure.5Mary: What’s he like?Ken: Well, why are you asking about Jim?Mary: Well, I want to try and get a part-time job at his store...Ken: Oh, well Jim’s a nice guy...Mary: Mm-hmm.Ken: I mean he’ll give you decent hours, a decent wage, and plenty of breaks.Mary: Well, that sounds good. Um, what does he look like? I’ve got to meet him at the Sunset Restaurant for lunch and I can’t remember.Ken: Oh, well he’s about thirty-six...Mary: Uh-huh.5Ken: ... six-foot-two...Mary: Oh, sounds kind of nice.Ken: Mm.Mary: Um, is he a, a formal kind of guy, or does he dress casually?Ken: Oh, he rarely dresses casually. He always wears three-piece suits and ties—dresses very 0much in style.Mary: Oh, I see, I better dress up then...Ken: Yeah, it might be a good idea.Part Two Better Listening5Section A006: You’d better give me my instructions. I have to leave soon.Z: Just a minute, 006. I have a message for you. You have to meet the Boss, tonight.006: Oh no! Not... the Boss!Z: That’s right, 006! He’ll be in a disco called Mama Mia tonight at ten o’clock.006: In a disco? But... I’ve never met him! What does he look like?Z: Well, he’s very tall, very tall, and he has very long, dark hair.006: Long hair? How old is he?5Z: Mm... About forty-five, I guess.006: And what about a flower? Will he be wearing a flower of any kind?Z: A flower? No. But he will be wearing a T-shirt saying “Bruce Springs is the Boss!”006: A Bruce Springs T-shirt?! All right, Z. And thanks!Z: Good luck, 006. And enjoy the disco! Listen carefully. You have to meet Agent X at the bus 0station at 7:00 this evening.Section BConversation One5Reporting a CrimePoliceman: You say he was around average height.Victim: Yes, that’s right. Around five nine, five ten.Policeman: Weight?Victim: I’m not sure. Medium, I suppose. Maybe a little on the heavy side.Policeman: Any marks on his face?Victim: No, I don’t think so.Policeman: Glasses?Victim: No.Policeman: What about his hair?5Victim: Black or dark brown.5Policeman: Long or short? Straight? Curly?Victim: Straight, I think, and about average length.Policeman: Boy, this sure doesn’t help us very much. It could be anybody. How about hisclothes? What was he wearing?Victim: Well, he had a checked or a plaid shirt—you know, the kind that lumberjacks wear. 0Policeman: OK, now we’re getting somewhere. Pants?Victim: Dark, maybe dark blue, maybe black. Unit 1Section Two (Martin Jacques: Understanding the rise of China)Q1The world is changing with really remarkable speed. If you look at the chart at the top here, you’ll see that in 2025, these Goldman Sachs projections suggest that the Chinese economy will be almost the same size as the American economy. And if you look at the chart for 2050, it’s projected that the Chinese economy will be twice the size of the American economy, and the Indian economy will be almost the same size as the American economy. And we should bear in mind here that these projections were drawn up before the Western financial crisis. A couple of weeks ago, I was looking at the latest projection by BNP Paribas for when China will have a larger economy than the United States. Goldman Sachs projected 2027. The post-crisis projection is 2020. That’s just a decade away. China is going to change the world in two fundamental respects. First of all, it’s a huge developing country with a population of 1.3 billion people, which has been growing for over 30 years at around 10 percent a year. And within a decade, it will have the largest economy in the world. Never before in the modern era has the largest economy in the world been that of a developing country, rather than a developed country. Secondly, for the first time in the modern era, the dominant country in the world –which I think is what China will become – will be not from the West and from very, very different civilizational roots. Now I know it’s a widespread assumption in the West that, as countries modernize, they also Westernize. This is an illusion. It’s an assumption that modernity is a product simply of competition, markets and technology. It is not; it is also shaped equally by history and culture. China is not like the West, and it will not become like the West. It will remain in very fundamental respects very different. Now the big question here is obviously, how do we make sense of China? How do we try to understand what China is? And the problem we have in the West at the moment by-and-large is that the conventional approach is that we understand it really in Western terms, using Western ideas. We can’t. Now I want to offer you three building blocks for trying to understand what China is like – just as a beginning.世界正以惊人的速度变化着。

Jody Hubbard is a diet and nutrition expert who travels around the state to speak in middle and high schools. Sometimes Jody feels that she succeeds in persuading some students to stop dieting; other times she feels that she fails.

Psychological research shows we consistently underestimate our mental powers. If you think this does not apply to you, then here is a simple test to show you’re wrong. Write down the names of all the American states you can remember. Put the list away, and then set yourself the same task a week later. Provided you have not cheated by consulting an atlas, you will notice something rather surprising. The two lists will contain roughly the same number of states, but they will not be identical. Somenames will have slipped away, but others will have replaced them. This suggests that somewhere in your mind you may well have a record of virtually every state. So it is not really your memory letting you down, just your ability to retrieve information from it.We would remember a lot more if we had more confidence in your memories and knew how to use them properly. One useful tip is that things are more likely to be remembered if you are in exactly the same state and place as you were when you learn them. So if you are a student who always reviews over black coffee, perhaps it would be sensible to prime yourself with a cup before the exam. If possible, you should also try to learn information in the room where it is going to be tested. When you learn is also important. Lots of people swear they can absorb new information more efficiently at some times of the day than at others. Research shows this is not just imagination. There is a biological rhythm for learning, though it affects different people in different ways. For most of us, the best plan is to take in new information in the morning and then try to consolidate it into memory during the afternoon. But this does not apply to everyone, so it is essential to establish your own rhythm. You can do this by learning a set number of lines of poetry at different times of the day, and see when most lines stick. When you have done this, try to organize your life so that the time set aside for learning coincides with the time when your memory is at its best.Avoid learning marathons—they do not make the best use of your mind. Take plenty of breaks, because they offer a double bonus: the time off gives your mind a chance to do some preliminary consolidation and it also gives a memory boost to the learning. 初步的;开始的三、词组积累1. apply to 适用于;应用于2. slip away 悄悄溜走3. retrieve from 取回;索回4. biological rhythm 生物节律5. set aside 省出;抽出6. coincide with 符合;与……相一致7. make the best use of 充分利用四、全文参考翻译心理学研究表明,我们总是低估自己大脑的能力。
