Video2. CEDABMike: Hey, guys. Come and look. I've found an interesting Web site on star signs. (The others come close to the computer and look at the star signs on the screen.) Ted: Hey, that's interesting! What's your sign, Sam?Sam: I'm a Scorpio. What's yours, Ted?Ted: I have no idea. I've never really thought about that. Let's have a look. I was born on September 5. Oh, I'm a Virgo.Simon: And I'm a Libra.Sam: What do they say about Libra, Simon?Simon: (He reads.) You're a sociable, charming person. You go out of your way to avoid confrontation and do everything in your power to make your life an easy one. Although you're generally likeable, you can be changeable, superficial and critical. But you manage to hide those traits most of the time.Mike: Do you agree with that? Are you that type of person?Simon: What do you think? I think there is something in what it says. I am social and outgoing. But I am not changeable, am I? What's your sign, Mike?Mike: I'm a Taurus. Ah, what's yours, Lilly?Lilly: I'm a Cancer.Ted: Now let's look at Taurus.( He reads.) You're a patient, practical type. Good points include your affectionate, kind nature, your trustworthiness and strength of character. Bad points include your possessiveness, self-indulgence and stubbornness. Do you think your character fits well?Mike: No, not at all. I'm not patient, and I'm not practical either. I am kind ofquick-tempered and ambitious. That's definitely not me! But one thing is right: I AM stubborn.Simon: Sam, let me read yours. (He reads.) You are secretive, and sexy. You have the worst reputation in the zodiac. Scorpio has a dark side, which includes revengeful and destructive traits. Yet despite this, you can be the wittiest, kindest and most entertaining of all the signs.Sam: Oh, that can't be true! Are you sure you were reading Scorpio?Simon: Yes, of course! Look for yourself.Sam: But that's unfair! I have the worst reputation in the zodiac?!The others: (They all laugh and say.) Ha ha... Poor Sam!Sam: Who could believe such silly things! Really, I think I'm intelligent, humorous, and kind-hearted.Mike: Yes, but those are just your good traits. Don't forget about your bad ones!Sam: Come on! Oh, Lilly, we haven't looked at your sign yet. Eh, you are a Cancer, right? You want me to read yours?Lilly: No, thanks. I'm afraid you'll distort what's written there. Let me read it myself. (She reads.) To some people, you appear tough and determined, but that's just a "front" you put up to protect the real you, which is rather more sensitive and softer. You can be moody, touchy and irritable, but you make up for those negative traits with your kindness, great intuition and protective nature. That's not bad, is it?Simon: No. But what counts is not what it says, but how you really are, what you are actually like.Lilly: (She is a bit defensive.) What do you mean? What are you trying to say about me?Simon: I think you are much nicer than what it describes.(Lilly smiles.)The other boys: Oh, Simon, don't sweet-talk her! We know what you are thinking.Ted: Hey, I haven't seen mine yet. Now it's my turn.Mike: Go ahead, Ted! Be our guest!Ted: It says: Virgo people like order in all things and are neat, clean and precise in their habits. Virgo people are perfectionists and they sometimes can be critical. They do not like to draw attention to themselves. Virgo people are modest, and careful about what they eat or drink.Sam: Do you have any objections to that?Ted: I think the description matches me quite well. I AM a perfectionist. I like things to be in order. Erm, I...I'm careful about what I eat and drink. But it doesn't mention my weak points.Lilly: Oh! And what are those?Ted: Well, sometimes I'm so careful I tend to waste a lot of time. I'm not very sociable, and I don't have many friends.Sam: I think everyone has some undesirable personality traits that could be improved. Don't you think we all could improve our personalities?Mike: I think we can. For example, my little sister was the youngest girl in our family. My parents loved her very much, but they spoiled her by giving her too much. She was at that time self-centered, selfish, aggressive, bad-tempered, and rude. Her personality didn't change any until she entered primary school. In school, she first acted as she did at home, and she couldn't make a single good friend. For a time, she was even isolated by her classmates. She complained to us, and finally understood her problem. From then on, she made every effort to get rid of her undesirable characteristics both at home and in school. Now she's in middle school and has turned into a popular girl.Lilly: In my opinion, our personalities are partly inherited and partly shaped by our home environment. As we all know, scientists have found that parents' personality traits can be seen in their children. Most children have some of their parents' personality traits.Mike: That's right. And our early home and school environment also has a big influence on the shaping of our personality. For instance, I've noticed that many children growing up in rich families may become wasteful, lazy, arrogant or cold. On the other hand, I've noticed that many children raised in poor families arehard-working, caring, sympathetic, and helpful.Sam: Does that mean you think we have to choose our parents wisely?(The others laugh.)LS-11. FFTFTTInterviewer: Angela, you were born in Korea but you've been living in Canada for a long time, haven't you?Angela: Yes, I was 10 years old when my parents immigrated to Canada and I've been living here for 20 years now.Interviewer: Do you think that belonging to two different cultures has affected your personality?Angela: Yes, definitely. There are times when I think that I have two personalities. Depending on where I am and who I'm with, I'm Korean or I'm Canadian.Interviewer: That sounds complicated. Could you explain what you mean?Angela: Well, growing up in Canada when I was going to high school, for example, I was known as Angela to the outside world, and as Sun-Kyung at home. I would wave hello to my teachers, but bow to my parents' Korean friends when they visited our home.Interviewer: Do different cultures have different ideas as to what is polite?Angela: Yes, definitely. In high school, I was expected to look straight in the eyes of my teachers and to talk openly with them. But when Koreans spoke to me, I was expected to look at my feet and to be shy and silent.Interviewer: Do you think that having two personalities makes you a richer person?Angela: Yes, but sometimes I don't know who I am.LS-22. BCADBI am a very sensitive person, and that's good to a point. I feel everyone should be able to feel or understand what others are going through. But when you hurt, cry, or are unhappy for people you don't know, or for a movie that is not real, then I think that's a little too sensitive. That's the way I am.I am a very independent person. I must do things for myself. I don't like people doing things for me, or helping me, or giving me things. It's not that I don't appreciate it, because I do. I just feel that when someone does something for you, you owe them, and if there is one thing I don't like to feel, it's that I owe anyone anything.I think I would be a good friend. I would do almost anything for someone I like, and would share or give anything I have. I'm very caring and understanding. People trust me with their secrets, and they're right for doing so because I never tell any secret that is told to me. I'm always there to help in any way that I can. All you have to do is ask.I enjoy life and people, which makes me feel good. I find fun in almost everything I do (except housework). I like to watch people, talk to them, and be around them. It makes no difference whether I agree or disagree with what they feel, or how they live, or what they look like, or what age they are. I just enjoy learning and being aware of everything and everyone around me.ML-12. TFTFFTTom: Hey, Bill. Do you have any plans for this weekend?Bill: Yeah, Tom. Cindy and I are going ice-skating on Saturday.Tom: Oh.Bill: Why do you ask?Tom: Well, I thought you might want to come over and study for next week's chemistry test.Bill: Study?! No way. Hey, what if I try to fix you up with Cindy's sister, Kristi. We could double-date. She's really outgoing, bright, and funny too.Tom: Hey, I still remember the girl you fixed me up with last time. She was very moody and self-centered. She couldn't stop talking about how great she was. I'm not sure if I can trust you, "Mr. Matchmaker".Bill: Oh come on. So I made a mistake last time. Cindy's sister is really different. Tom: Well, what does she look like?Bill: Ah. Looks aren't important. She has a wonderful personality.Tom: Right.Bill: Okay. She has long wavy blond hair and blue eyes. She's of medium height, just a little shorter than you are.Tom: Go on.Bill: She has a great figure, a nice complexion, and she has a sexy voice. Oh, and she has a tattoo of an eagle on her arm.Tom: A what?Bill: No, just kidding. By the way, she was the runner-up in the Miss California Beauty Pageant two years ago. Well, you're probably not interested.Tom: No, wait!Bill: Ah, just forget I ever mentioned it.Tom: No, I'm interested!ML-22. DEJ BF CH AGIDavid: Barbara, before you go, could you tell me about these students that are coming into my class?Barbara: Oh, yes. Now, let me think, well, there's...er...Paul. He's a tall, slim lad with fair hair. Very friendly face, lovely smile... He's particularly good with group activities, and he's a very helpful person to have in the class and very helpful with the other students. He speaks fluently, but does make a lot of mistakes! He doesn't seem to mind making mistakes. He asks a lot of questions...er...he tends to speak first and think later. But he's got lots of interesting ideas.David: Good.Barbara: Ah...Susan...Susan. Now, she's very lively, quick, and very bright. She talks all the time but not always in English.David: What? Is she difficult or anything?Barbara: No...she's quite young but she does behave in quite a grown-up way really for her age. It can be a bit difficult to actually shut her up sometimes and make her listen to you.David: Ah, right.Barbara: She's very nice. She has dark hair and dark eyes.David: Right, well...are there any other girls in the class?Barbara: Yes, there is Maria. She's Susan's sister.David: Yes.Barbara: Actually it's quite difficult to tell them apart although...er... Maria is slightly older. She's a bit plumper and has longer hair than Susan. She's not quite asbright as her sister and I think that makes her feel a bit inferior really. Well, you know, she sulks a bit when she gets things wrong or she misunderstands you. But on the whole, a very sensible girl.David: OK.Barbara: And then there's Peter, who's older than the others. He's got a sort of moustache, spectacles and wavy dark brown hair. He usually wears a jacket and sometimes a suit. He's very smart and takes notes all the time. He's also very serious and determined to learn as much as possible. He asks quite difficult questions but he doesn't mean to be nasty.David: Well, thanks, Barbara. It's all up to me now, isn't it? Have a good holiday, won't you?Barbara: Thanks.David: Bye.ML-31. Pedro sleeps only six hours a night. He goes to school full-time and workspart-time in the afternoons. At night he plays soccer or basketball. He's seldom tired and his favorite way to relax is to jog two or three miles. What kind of person is Pedro?2. Mr. Miller was teaching his fourth grade class how to divide. The students didn't understand. He had to repeat his lesson and explain the idea more slowly. Over the next few days he explained and explained the lesson until almost the whole class understood and knew how to divide. What kind of teacher is Mr. Miller?3. People in the High Street neighborhood don't buy their fruits and vegetables in the supermarket. They buy them from Mr. Smith's truck. You can trust Mr. Smith. He never tries to sell any bad or unripe fruit. His prices are fair. What kind of person is Mr. Smith?4. Jake and Charles ran into the classroom. Each one saw the chair he wanted to sit on. Unfortunately, it was the same chair. They both sat down at the same time. Each of them had half a chair. Charles said he was there first and tried to push Jake off the chair. Jake said he was first. Both boys refused to move."All right, boys," said the teacher. "If you won't move, then you can sit like that for the whole period." Jake and Charles sat like that for the whole period until the bell rang. When they stood up they were stiff and sore."I don't care," said Jake. "I was there first."What kind of person is Jake?5. Room 46A at Travis High School was always the dirtiest room in the school. Many of the students threw paper on the floor. One day, Mrs. Duke had an idea. She fastened a basketball hoop over the wastebasket. Now the students love to practice throwing their paper into the basket. When they miss, they pick the paper up and try again. And that was the end of the problem. What kind of person is Mrs. Duke?ML-41. FTFFTA number of visitors to the UK, who had traveled throughout the British Isles, were asked by a newspaper reporter what their impressions of the British people were. Here's a brief summary of what they thought. There were many different opinions among those interviewed: Some were very flattering, others very critical. The distinction between the English and the British wasn't always understood, but, on the whole, it seemed that the Scots were very popular with visitors. They were thought to be very friendly, even though one Dutch visitor confessed she'd found it hard to understand their English.A great number found the British generally reserved, particularly the English, although one Australian visitor called the English "the friendliest people in the world and most hospitable". But she did admit that speaking the same language was a great help. Some Asian businessmen, who had traveled widely throughout England, said quite openly that they found North country people "much nicer" than people in the South. When asked what exactly they meant by "much nicer", one of them said, with a playful smile on his face, "By much nicer I mean much more like us!"A few continentals praised "English courtesy", but the majority found it dishonest and dull. "You're forever saying 'please' and 'sorry' when you don't feel pleased or sorry," one explained.A young student from South Africa had no views on the matter. He hadn't met any Englishmen, he said. The country appeared to be full of foreigners like himself. Statements:1. It was easy to tell the English from the British.2. Speaking the same language helped one Australian visitor a lot.3. By "much nicer", one of the visitors meant that the British people were more friendly than people of other countries.4. The majority of continentals thought highly of English manners.5. To the young student from South Africa, Britain seemed to have a lot of foreign visitors.TY-1One day, when Mr. Smith came home from work, he found his wife very upset about something. Mr. Smith always thought that he was more sensible than his wife, so he started to give her a lecture on the importance of always remaining calm. Finally he said, "It's a waste of your strength to get excited about small things. Train yourself to be patient, like me. Now, look at the fly that has just landed on my nose. Am I getting excited or annoyed? Am I swearing or waving my arms around? No. I'm not. I'm perfectly calm."Just as he had said this, Mr. Smith started shouting. He jumped up and began to wave his arms around wildly and swear terribly. He couldn't speak for some time, but at last he was able to tell his wife: The thing on his nose was not a fly, but a bee.TY-2BBDBDACTom: Oh, that Mr. Taylor. He is so boring!Mother: What do you mean?Tom: His lessons put me to sleep. And he's so quick-tempered, Mum.Mother: Quick-tempered? Mr. Taylor? Are you sure darling?Tom: Yes, he gets angry very quickly.Mother: That doesn't sound like Mr. Taylor at all!Tom: And do you know, he spends all the time looking at his reflection in the window, admiring himself.Mother: Really? And why does he do that?Tom: Because he's vain, that's why! And conceited! He thinks he knows everything. Mother: Oh, Tom. Be reasonable. I'm sure you're exaggerating. Mr. Taylor seems such a nice, kind man.Tom: Well, he isn't. He is mean and cruel.Mother: Cruel? Now how can a history teacher be cruel?Tom: Because he only gave me two out of ten points in my history test.Mother: Oh, now I understand. Tom, I think you'd better get on with your homework!TY-3(S1 = the first speaker; S2 = the second speaker; S3 = the third speaker; S4 = the fourth speaker)S1: In this week's edition of Up with People we went out into the streets and interviewed a number of people. We asked a question they just didn't expect. We asked them to be self-critical...to ask themselves exactly what they thought they lacked or—the other side of the coin—what virtues they had. Here is what we heard. S2: Well...I...I don't know really...it's not the sort of question you ask yourself directly.I know I'm good at my job... At least my boss considers me hard-working, conscientious, and efficient. I'm a secretary by the way. When I look at myself in a mirror as you sometimes do in the privacy of your own bedroom...or at your reflection in the shop windows as you walk up the street... Well...then I see someone a bit different. Yes...I'm different in my private life. And that's probably my main fault I should say... I suppose I'm not coherent in my behavior. My office is always in order...but my flat! Well...you'd have to see it to believe it.S3: Well...I'm retired, you know. Used to be an army officer. And...I think I've kept myself...yes, I've kept myself respectable the whole of my life. I've tried to help those who depend on me. I've done my best. I am quite self-disciplined. Basically I'm a good guy, fond of my wife and family... That's me.S4: Well...when I was young I was very shy. At times I...I was very unhappy...especially when I was sent to boarding school at age seven. I didn't make close friends till later...till I was about...fifteen. Then I became quite good at being by myself. I had no one to rely on...and no one to ask for advice. That made me independent. My wife and I have two sons. We...we didn't want an only child because I felt...well I felt I'd missed a lot of things.。

B3-Unit1 listening and speaking

B3-Unit1 listening and speaking

Book 3 Unit1Using Language: Listening and speaking段廷凤Teaching analysisAnalysis of teaching materialLike teaching any other English skills, teachers should make the students want to listen and speak first. So, before listening, I will introduce a little background knowledge and offer them the map of Trinidad on ppt. This gives them an impression that Trinidad and its carnival are not imaginary, so they are relevant to us. Meanwhile, I will let them look at the pictures in part 1 and guess what the carnival might include. This acts as a warming-up process. This part is based on the previous reading class. It is an out-put process which enables the students to use what they have leaned. If the students are well guided, they can acquire confidence through listening and speaking. But listening and speaking are always more difficult than reading, so I must try to make it easier for the students to deal with this task. Thus I have designed a form for them to fill while they are listening for the first time. This form guides them to notice the time and people in the listening material. This task is very easy to finish. It helps to reduce their anxietydesigner wants the students to listen to the conversation and answer questions. I think it is better to adapt this part as the following. Thus the students just need to fill the blanks.Part 1.1 ) What is wrong with Li Mei’s clothing and shoes?Li Mei’s clothing is too heavy and her shoes are not comfortable enough to walk in for a long time.2 ) What advice does Carla give LiMei?Carla suggests that Li Mei should change her shoes to something more comfortable, wear some light and cooler clothing and also take a hat. Before the students prepare their dialogue in part 3 on page 6, I will five them two minute to scan the form at the bottom of the page and offer them a sample dialogue. The following is the sample dialogue:Sample dialogue :A: Hi, Thomas! Would you like to come to a party on Sunday?B: Yes, I’d love to! Where and when will it be?A: It’ll be at my home at three o’clock in the afternoon.B: Thanks! I’ll be there! Should I bring anything?A: Hmm…Could you bring something to drink? I’ll have plenty to eat.B: Sure! I’d be happy to!Analysis of studentsIn the previous reading class, students have learned various festivals. They are emotionally ready and linguistically prepared to this listening task to some extent. Most students have trouble in listening and speaking because they are lack of reading aloud practice and they can not think in English smoothly. They are not sensitive to English pronunciations, stresses, rhythms, intonations, and liaisons and loss of explosion. All of the above elements can be enhanced through reading accurately and loudly. So after listening, I will offer them the text of the listening material so they can imitate the tape and read the text several times after class.Analysis of teaching methodsWhile teaching listening, I think it is very important to motivate the students, activate their previous knowledge, and get them emotionally and linguistically ready for listening. I designed my Lead-in part according to the above ideas. Also, students should be trained to listen for a gist at the beginning and then listen for details later.Analysis of learning methodsMost students are very nervous before listening. So teachers should often tell them not to have impractical expectations on themselves. It is impossible for us to memorize all what we have heard. We just extract some important information when we are listening in our daily life. Teachers should also tell students not to pay much attention to strange words and phrases they have heard and encourage them to guess their meanings through the context. In addition, teachers should encourage students to practice their reading skills through reading aloud, such as pronunciations, stresses, rhythms, intonations, and liaisons and loss of explosion, because language skills are not isolated. One skill can influence the other skill greatly. Listening, speaking, reading and writing should be integrated in both teaching and learning process.Analysis of teaching proceduresAccording to the above analysis, I divided my lesson plan into three steps. They are Lead-in, listening and speaking. The lead in process is designed to motivate the students and get them emotionally and linguistically ready before listening. My students should listen to the text four times. While they are listening for the first time, they are supposed to fill a simple form. While listening for the second time, they should fill the blanks. At the third time, they should listen to check their answers to the blanks. While listening for the last time, they are asked to answer the following questions using full sentences. The blanks and the questions are as the following:Part 1.1 ) What is wrong with Li Mei’s clothing and shoes?Li Mei’s clothing is too heavy and her shoes are not comfortable enough to walk in for a long time.2 ) What advice does Carla give LiMei?Carla suggests that Li Mei should change her shoes to something more comfortable, wear some light and cooler clothing and also take a hat.Part2.3) Why is it important for them to have water? It is important for them to have water because it is very hot and they will be doing a lot of walking and dancing.4) Why is it difficult for them to hear each other? It is important for them to hear each other because the music is very loud.5) Why do they plan to meet at the parking lot at 8 o’clock? They plan to meet at the parking lot at 8 o’clock because they may get lost in the crowd.1.What is wrong with Li Mei’s clothing and shoes?2.What advice does Carla give Li Mei?3.Why is it important for them to have water?4.Why is it difficult for them to hear each other?5.Why do they plan to meet at the parking lot at 8 o’clock? Finally, I want the students to check their answers in pairs for five minutes and then invite some students to report their answers to the whole class. Of course I will give some necessary comments. As for speaking, the students have already had a reason to speak. They are speaking to invite their friends to a Chinese festival. This is very important. They will not feel that they are doing something irrelevant to their lives. I will also make it easier for them to prepare their speaking by offering sample dialogue.Analysis of writing designWhile teaching this part, I think I only need to show the students the keys to their listening exercises. I will show it on the screen on ppt. If I really need to write something down on the board, I’ll try to write them in a way that is clear, simple, accurate and helpful. I will also try to heighten the most important information with different colors.Teaching PlanAims:1.Develop students’ listening and speaking abilities.2.Enable students to make phone calls, invitations and show thanks.3.Master the words and phrases concerning festivals in daily expression.Knowledge:1.To learn about the Carnival in Trinidad and how people celebrate it so as to enable them tolearn more about different cultures while learning different language.2.Enable the students to master some expressions about making phone calls, invitations andshowing thanks.Ability:1. Enable students to use English to make phone calls, invitations and show thanks.2. Develop students’ problem solving ability through finding answers to the listening questions on page 6.3. Develop students speaking ability and thinking in English ability through exercise 3 on page 6.Attitudes:1.Arouse students’ interests in culture abroad.2.Develop students’ cultural awareness through the listening material.Teaching aid: a computer, a projector, courseware, a tape-recorderTeaching proceduresStep 1: Lead in①Teacher introduces Trinidad and Trinidad Carnival.Today we’ll talk about Trinidad Carnival. Trinidad is one of the islands in the two-island nation of Trinidad and Tobago(特立尼达和多巴哥). This country is in the Caribbean Sea. It is very close to the northeast coast of South America. Carnival time in February is the most important time for many people who live in Christian Catholic countries. It is a time of community celebration that lasts for several days and ends in a great parade of musicians, dancers and the local people.②Teacher shows the following maps on the screen.③Ask the students to look at the pictures of the Trinidad Carnival. Unit1Gender and SocietyBook 3A | &B |OK, so today we’re going to continue on the topic of how children are socialized. We’ll be looking at gender socialization—in other words, how, how children learn their gender roles. Gender issomething that we learn— first from our parents, then from our peers, from school, and from the culture we live in. OK, let’s start with our parents. Generally, our gender roles are pretty clear to us by the time we’re around three years old. So how do we, how do we learn these roles so quickly?Well, one way is simply by what our parents say to us. Parents give female children a lot of compliments on how they look—on their appearance, right? We say things like, “What a pretty girl!” orTo be continued >>>Listening 1“That’s a nice dress you’re wearing.” Girls might get compliments on other things, too, but they, they soon learn that being feminine has something to do with being attractive or pretty, right? Boys, in contrast, are complimented on what they do. We say things like,“Look how fast little Timmy can run! Good for you, Timmy!” So over time, boys learn that being, being masculine has something to do with their behaviour and with being active. Our peers, when we’re children—girls and boys around the same age as we are—also teach us about gender roles, and sometimes they’re not very nice about this either. They make fun of children who aren’t following the rules. Can you remember kids from your childhood who didn’t follow the gender rules? Schools continue, schoolsTo be continued >>>Listening 1continue the process of gender socialization. Some schools haveseparate classes for girls and boys, and, um, of course school uniforms are different— pants for boys, and skirts or dresses for girls. Finally, the culture we live in has a lot to teach us about gender roles.Listening 1C |As you know, one of the first questions when a baby is born is, “Is it a boy or a girl?” We think it’s important to know this because when children grow up, their role in the world depends on their gender—at least to some degree. But nowadays, gender roles are changing, and besides, there have always been a few people who are not average, who do not follow the usual gender pattern. One person from history who did not follow her usual gender role was Hatshepsut. Around 150 years before Tutankhamen ruled ancientEgypt as pharaoh, or king, Hatshepsut ruled for 21 years as the female king of Egypt. That’s right—female king, because there was no such thing as a queen as leader. A few women had filled the roleTo be continued >>>Listening 1of leader when their sons were too young to rule, but Hatshepsut stayed in power even after her stepson, Tutmose III, was old enough to rule. And she accomplished a lot while she was king! Up and down the Nile River we can still see the monuments and buildings that were constructed or repaired while Hatshepsut was king. It seems that she did not want to be forgotten.Besides the buildings and monuments, we have a lot of art from the time of Hatshepsut. And what’s interesting is that at first, Hatshepsut is shown with female characteristics—she was clearly a woman, but with the clothing and symbols of a king. For example, in one statue, she is seated and has the body of a woman but is wearing theheaddress of a king. In later years, we see the reverse. All of the later artwork shows her as a man, with male characteristics. We’re notTo be continued >>>Listening 1sure why Hatshepsut had her artists do this, but it may have helped her to keep power. It might have been easier for Egyptians to accept a man as king—or at least someone who looked like a man.Mia: Hey, Dylan! Long time, no see!Dylan: Yeah, it’s been ages! I was gone all summer. I had a job workingfor my uncle, so I stayed with him in Toronto for two months. What about you, Mia? How’ve you been?Mia: Great! I just spent the time right here because I was taking acourse in summer school. I want to graduate early.Dylan: Wow, you’re really working hard! So,... What do you thinkabout this class we’re in?Mia: Oh, I think it’s going to be great! It’s such an interesting topic—“Gender and Sociology”.Dylan: Hmmph. I suppose. I can see that Professor Henley is veryknowledgeable on the subject. But I can also see that I disagree with her about a lot of things. Mia: Such as... ?B |Dylan: Well, I think some jobs just aren’t good for women likefirefighters for instance.Mia: What? You think women aren’t brave enough or something? Dylan: Hey, I never said that! But, well, they aren’t as strong—physically, I mean. Do you think a woman could carry me out of a burning building? Come on, everyone knows men are stronger than women.Mia: Ha! So, you think you’re stronger than the female athletes in theOlympics, just because you’re a man?Dylan: Well, no, of course not ...Mia: Then you can’t say that all men are stronger than all women. Here, let me draw you a graph ...Listening 2To be continued >>>Dylan: What’s that?Mia: It’s from my summer school class. We had to do some research ongender differences, and similarities. OK ... now ... look at this ... This line here shows how it looks if you make a graph of how strong women are, by how much weight they can lift. Here. A small woman can’t lift more than 20 pounds. And a woman athlete can lift 200 pounds. Right? Dylan: I don’t know, I guess so.Mia: Now, what about men? Can all men lift 200 pounds? Dylan: Well, no, probably not.Mia: Can you lift 200 pounds? Hmmm? Dylan: (laughter)Listening 2To be continued >>>Mia: So, maybe a really small man can only lift, oh, 50 pounds. And areally big man can lift 200, so not all men are equal in terms of physical strength either ... There are different levels of strength within the genders, too ... So, the line for men looks like this ... Do you see what I mean? In fact, it’s true that most men are stronger than most women ... so there is a gender gap when it comes to physical strength. But you can’t conclude that all men are stronger than all women. And if you have to lift, say, 150 pounds to be a firefighter, then some women can do the job. Dylan: Well, I suppose so.Mia: Besides, most women are smaller than most men. So possiblythey can go into smaller spaces to rescue people.Listening 2C |Dylan: It sounds like you just want women to compete with men andtake their jobs away. Mia: No, I don’t! There are lots of good jobs that only women used todo, and now men are hired for them, too. Dylan: Hmm. I can’t think of any!Mia: Well, look at flight attendants. For a long time people thoughtthat only women had the ability to be helpful on planes. Dylan: Yeah, back when they still used to call them stewardesses, right? To be continued >>>Listening 2Mia: Yeah! My aunt was a flight attendant— or stewardess—whenshe was young, and she said it used to be just awful. They were required to be very thin, and they weren’t allowed to keep their jobs if they gained weight! Oh, and they were forbidden to get married, and they had to stop working when they were 32—can you imagine? But now that’s all changed, fortunately, and the airlines encourage men to become flight attendants, too. There are lots of men who are flight attendants now. Dylan: It sounds like a great job to me—traveling every day andmeeting so many people. I can’t imagine why the airlines didn’t want men.To be continued >>>Mia: Well, they thought that all women were more helpful than allmen! Dylan: Now, that’s a stupid idea. And hey, men can lift heavier bagsfor the passengers! Remember? “Most men are stronger than most women.” Mia: Dylan, you’re impossible!Narrator: For 51 weeks of the year, the Wodaabe, a nomadic African tribe, eke out a living on a parched strip of land in West Africa. In the 52nd week, they dance. This is far more than an ordinarydance, though. Part beauty pageant and part mating ritual, this danceis part of a seven-day festival that gives the men in the tribe the opportunity to show off for the women. For Wodaabe men, this isthe time to weave the web of enchantment. For psychologists, the Wodaabe festival provides insight into the impact of appearance onattraction and social behavior. All the Wodaabe—but especially the men—pride themselves on their physical beauty. Light skin, thin lips, a long nose and jawline. The Wodaabe consider these to be the ideal features, and they accentuate them with carefully applied makeup. To be continued >>>Wodaabe Man: If a man puts black color on his lips, it makes his white teeth stand out, and this is very attractive to women. If a man puts yellow on his face, it brings out his charm and personality and makes him irresistible.Narrator: The first part of the dance, known as the yaake , begins in the late afternoon. The dancers face the setting sun so its golden rays will enhance their beauty. The object of the yaake is to make oneself as irresistible as possible to the group of eligible women who are monitoring every move and expression. To be continued >>>Narrator: The three most beautiful women of the clan act as judges. They express their approval of certain dancers by a tap on the chest without making eye contact. It is taboo for them to look directly at those they find attractive. The yaake ends just before sunset. Slowly the dancers disperse to prepare for the night’s festivities. After a rest period, preparations for the second part of the dance begin—the sacred dance of physical beauty called the geerewol . Unlike the yaake , in which the men are evaluated on charm and personality as well as looks, the geerewol dancers will be judged on the basis of beauty alone. Only the most handsome men dare to compete. To be continued >>>Narrator: Normally the geerewol would be danced throughout the night, but a drought has shortened the supply of drinking water, so the Wodaabe elders call a halt to the dancing shortly before midnight. By then, many of the members have paired up. The women have chosen the men they find most attractive and appealing.Shortly after sunrise on the final night, the Wodaabe prepare to leave the celebration site. After a week of dancing, they are once again nomads.Kabuki is a traditional form of singing and dancing theater that is still popular in Japan. One unusual characteristic of kabuki is that all the roles of women are played by male actors called onnagata . These actors spend many years studying women’s behavior and activities, such as sewing. Some people say that the actors are more feminine than real women are! There are many examples of male actors who play roles of the opposite gender, but the reverse doesn’t happen very often. The Year of Living Dangerously is a famous movie from the 1980s. It’s about an Australian journalist who meets a news photographer during a time of terrible violence. To be continued >>>Many people didn’t notice that the star who played the role of Billy Kwan, the photographer, was actually a woman. Linda Hunt won an Academy Award for her acting in the movie. She gave Billy Kwan many characteristics that people think are masculine, especially courage. In the time of William Shakespeare, women were generally not allowed to appear on a theater stage. In Shakespeare’s plays, female characters like Juliet (in Romeo and Juliet ) were played by young boys. Some of them became very famous, like Nathan Field. When their voices changed and they grew older, these actors had to start playing men’s roles.Question: Timis County is located in the western part of which European Country?Eric Yang knew the answer. “Romania!” he said, and became the winner of the National Geographic Bee. Every year, thousands of young people compete in this international contest of geographical knowledge. Three winners from each country go on to the world championship. For years, however, the contest’s organizers have wondered about a question of their own: An equal number of girls and boys enter the contest at the school and regional levels. Why are so many of the national winners boys? In the United States, Eric’s home country, only two girls have won the top prize since 1989.Listening 2To be continued >>>Gender may also be a factor in success at the world championships, too. When the National Geographic World Championship was held in Mexico City, a team of three boys from Canada beat 16 other national teams. The second prize went to three boys from the U.S.A., and the third prize to three boys from Poland. As in the past, most contestants were male, and two scientistsinvestigated the reasons for this. They concluded that there is in fact a small gender gap in geography, but they couldn’t find the cause. Possibly, boys are taught to be more assertive than girls, or they might feel more pressure from their parents. Maybe boys have a better ability to use maps. Or maybe teachers encourage boys more in geography classes.Listening 2For most of the year, the Wodaabe are nomadic, moving from place to place to find grass for their cattle. For one week each year, however, it’s festival time for the Wodaabe. It’s called the geerewol , and it’s a chance for Wodaabe men to show off for the women. The geerewol is a kind of beauty pageant, and the men who participate wear makeup to emphasize the features that areconsidered beautiful by the Wodaabe: long noses, strong white teeth, and large eyes, among other characteristics. The geerewol is all about attraction—both physical beauty and charm. While the men dance, the women watch and carefully evaluate the men’s appearance. When an available woman finds a man who is irresistible to her, she lets him know with small gestures. With many women watching, the pageant has many winners.Listening 3。
