He walked for days over the hot desert sand. One night he found the camp (宿营地) where he had been the night before. Gray had walked in a circle. He was lost. Two days later he had drunk all his water. He couldn’t walk. He crawled to the top of a sand dune (沙丘), and there he saw a man. The man was wearing smart, clean trousers, a white shirt and a tie. Gray crawled over to him.“Water… water…” he said.“I’m terribly sorry, old boy,” replied the man, “but I haven’t got any water with me.”“Help me!” shouted Gray, “I’m a rich man… a millionaire… I’ll give you anything.”“That’s very nice of you, old boy,” said the man. “Look, I can’t give you any water, but would like to buy my tie?”“A tie? Of course not!” screamed Gray, and crawled away. He crawled slowly up the next sand dune. His mouth was full of sand. His lips were cracked (破裂) and dry. He couldn’t breathe. In America and around the world, Christmas offers many opportunities to spread “peace on earth, good will toward men.” For example, Salvation Army bell ringers are a familiar sight to most Christmas shoppers. They stand outside malls and stores collecting money for the needy. Many churches and other organizations collect toys and clothes as Christmas gifts for poor families. Going caroling is another traditional way to bring cheer to neighbors—especially the elderly and people who can’t get out much. The Christmas spirit encourages people to help each other in many large and small ways. The spirit of helping others isn’t limited to Christmas, however. Americans help others year-round. Civic clubs such as the Lions Club, the Elks Club and the Rotary Club take part in local community projects. Many organizations exist just to help others. The Make a Wish Foundation gives terminally ill children a chance to have their dream come true. Habitat for Humanity helps poor people build their own houses. And besides supporting worthy causes with their money, thousands of Americans donate their time by serving as volunteers in hospitals, homeless shelters and schools. As the old saying goes, “Charity begins at home”—but it doesn’t stop there. Americans are concerned about helping needy people in other countries as well. The U.S. is often one of the first countries to provide relief to areas of the world in severe need. Many American organizations reach out to suffering people in other countries. Some of them have programs by which donors can sponsor needy children. For a certain amount per month, people can provide these children with food, clothing and education.Americans not only give money to help people in other countries; often they give themselves as well. Many people serve as volunteers with the Peace Corps for two years to provide assistance in some needy part of the world. They dig wells, help people improve farming techniques, build medical clinics and teach English. In addition, thousands of missionaries from America and other countries have devoted their lives to helping people. They have built schools, hospitals, orphanages and churches in order to share God’s love with those in need.As long as there are people in need, helping others will remain an important task.Americans are not the only ones who believe in helping others. People in every culture recognize that being helpful is one of the greatest virtues in life, as well as one of the sweetest joys. The Christmas season is a great time to renew our commitment to help people in need. We never know when we might need a little help ourselves. (15分)(1) What is the first paragraph mainly about? That is one reason why astronauts on solo (单独的) space flights were given plenty of work to keep them (1). They were also in constant communication with people on the earth. (2), being with people from whom you cannot get away might be even harder than being alone. This is what happens on long submarine (潜水艇) voyages. It will also happen on (3) space flights in the future. Will there be special problems of adjustment under such conditions? Some scientists have studied the reactions of men to one another during long submarine voyages. They have found that the longer the voyage lasts, the more serious the problem of (4) is. When men are (5) together for a long period, they begin to feel uneasy. Everyone has little habits of speaking and behaving that are ordinarily acceptable. In the limited space over a long period of time, however, these little habits may become very (6).Apparently, although no one wants to be (7) all the time, everyone needs some degree of privacy. When people are enclosed together, they are in what is called a stress situation. That means that they are under an unusual amount of (8) or stress. People who are well-adjusted are able to (9) stress situations better than others. That is one reason why so much care is taken in (10) our astronauts. These men undergo a long period of testing and training. One of the things tested is their behavior under stress. We can only make a (1), of course, but we can be sure that he will be different from what he is today, for man is slowly changing all the time.Let us take an obvious example. Man, even five hundred years ago, was shorter than he is today. Now on (2), men are about three inches taller. Five hundred years is relatively a short period of time, so we may imagine that man will continue to grow (3).Again, in the modern world we use our brains a great deal. Even so, we still make use of only about 20% of the brain’s capacity (能量). As time (4) on, however, we shall have to use our brains more and more—and eventually we shall need (5) ones! This is (6) to bring about a physical change too. The head, in particular, the forehead, will grow larger.Nowadays our eyes are in constant use. In fact, we use them so much that very often they become weaker and we have to wear glasses. But over a long period of time it is likely that man’s eyes will grow (7).On the other hand, we tend to make less use of our arms and legs. These, as (8), are likely to grow weaker. At the same time, however, our fingers will grow more sensitive because they are used a great (9) in modern life. But what about hair? This will probably disappear from the body altogether in course of time because it does not serve a useful purpose any longer. In the future, then, both sexes (性别) are likely to be bald (秃头的)!Perhaps all this gives the impression that future man will not be a very attractive creature to look at! This may well be true. All the same, (10) all these changes, future man will still have a lot in common with us. He will still be a human being with thoughts and emotions similar to our own. The spot at the southwest corner of the house, however, was never going to look nice. Not with that rock protecting weeds and crab grass to form a scab on the green.I went to the shed and got my shovel. I was going to dig out the rock. I braced myself for what was to be a long day, perhaps experienced by previous generations who had tried to dislodge the rock. I put on heavy shoes and rolled out my wheelbarrow. If it took the whole day, that rock was going to come out. Five minutes later the rock was out. It had been about a foot deep and maybe six inches wider than it looked from the top. I pried it loose with a crowbar and hoisted it into the wheelbarrow.I was stunned. That rock had persisted there beyond living memory. Each family had taken it on faith that the previous generation had tried and failed to remove it. Because the rock had appeared to be large and deep, it was treated as immovable and strong. I have seen people do this too—and get others to walk carefully around themand assume a depth of character and knowledge solely from demeanor rather than from actual accomplishment. The rock had earned my respect. I couldn’t j ust dump it behind the barn. So I wheeled it over to the shed, still within sight of the house. It rests there, with vinca growing around it.I still see the rock every day but now as something good in my little landscape. It’s a reminder that each genera tion ought to find things out for itself. So it stayed. My children were born, grew up and went away. My father-in-law died. Some time later, my husband died. Now I began to see the yard around me the way a woman sees her house when company comes unexpectedly. I saw a hundred little sore spots. Richard Gray was a famous explorer. He was also a millionaire. He has visited every country in the world. He had crossed Antarctica (南极洲), flown across the Atlantic by balloon, and climbed Mount Everest. Last year, he decided to walk across Death Valley, the hottest place on Earth. Gray crawled over to him.“Water… water…” he said.“I’m terribly sorry, old boy,” replied the man, “but I haven’t got any waterwith me.”“Help me!” shouted Gray, “I’m a rich man… a millionaire… I’ll give you anything.”“That’s very nice of you, old boy,” said the man. “Look, I can’t give you any water, but would like to buy my tie?”“A tie? Of course not!” screamed G ray, and crawled away. He crawled slowly up the next sand dune. His mouth was full of sand. His lips were cracked (破裂) and dry. He couldn’t breathe. He reached the top of the dune and there he saw a huge good hotel. Girls were swimming in the large swimming pool. Beautiful fountains were all around the hotel.“Is it a mirage(幻景)?” he thought. “Am I dying?” He stood up and staggered down the dune.A waiter in a shining white uniform came out of the door.“Water… water… a bath! Are you aware that you actually possess six senses? The sixth is a muscular sense responsible for directing your muscles intelligently to the exact extent necessary for each action you perform. For example, when you reach for an object, the sensory nerves linking the muscles to the brain stop your hand at the correct spot. This automatic perception of the position of your muscles in relation to the object is your muscular sense in action.Muscles are stringly bundles of fibers varying from one five-thousandth of an inch to about three inches. They have three unique characteristics, they can become shorter and thicker; they can stretch; and they can retract to their original positions. Under a high-powered microscope, muscle tissue is seen as long, slender cells with a grainy texture like wood.More than half of a person's body is composed of muscle fibers, most of which are involuntary-in other words, work without conscious direction. The voluntary muscles, those that we move consciously to perform particular actions, number more than five hundred. Women have only 60 to 70 percent as muchmuscle as men for their body mass. That is why an average woman can't lift as much, throw as far, or hit as hard as an average man. (16分)(答题时限:00:01:00)(1) According to the selection, the muscular sense is responsible for (). I had just gone to bed after a very hard day when the phone rang.It was an eccentric(怪僻的)farmer. I hadnever met him before although I had often heard people talk about him. He sounded quite nervous and he had been talking for a minute or so before I understood anything. Even then all I could make out was that someone called Milly had had a very bad accident.I hadn't the slightest idea who she was but I obviously had to go .It had been snowing heavily that day and I didn't know the way. I had been driving for at least an hour when I finally found his place. He was standing there, waiting for me. It seemed Milly had died."She meant more to me than anyone…even my own wife!" he said. I could see that he had been crying. I thought something terrible had taken place, a possible scandal(丑闻).I was even more shocked when he told me he had put her in the barn(厩)."I wouldn't leave her out in the cold!" he said. Fifty years ago, only 4 out of every 100 people in the United States were 65 or older. Today, 10 out of every 100 Americans are over 65. The aging of the population will affect (影响) American society in many ways — education, medicine, and business.Quietly, the graying of America has made us a very different society— one in which people have a quite different idea of what kind of behavior (行为)is suitable (合适) at various ages. A person's age no longer tells you anything about his/her social position, marriage or health. There's no longer a particular year in which one goes to school or goes to work or gets married or starts a family. The social clock that kept us on time and told us when to go to school, get a job,or stop working isn't as strong as it used to be.It doesn't surprise us to hear of a 29-year-old university president or a 35-year-old grandmother, or a 70-year-old man who has become a father for the first time. Public ideas are changing. Many people say, 'I am much younger than my mother- or my father - was at my age.' No one says ‘Act your age’ anymore. For a practitioner of yoga, the progression through these stages is a movement from the physical toward a perfect mental state. There are eight major schools of yoga, each varying in its area of emphasis. The type of yoga that is taught in the West is mainly a combination of exercise and meditation called Hatha Yoga.Hatha Yoga is said to have a number of positive effects, such as reducing weight, strengthening muscles and nerves, cleaning out the body, and generally improving health and prolonging life.Recent decades have seen yoga gain widespread acceptance as a method of staying in shape, as well as a way of handling stress. Pop singer Madonna and supermodel Christy Turlington are just two of the many celebrities known to be strong advocates of yoga.At present, there is a lot of speculation and uncertainty about yoga and its effects. It was not yet eleven o'clock when a boat crossed the river with a single passenger who had obtained his transportation at that unusual hour by promising an extra fare. While the youth stood on the landing-place searching in his pocket for money, the ferry man lifted a lantern, by the aid of which, together with the newly risen moon, he took a very accurate survey of the stranger’s figure. He was a young man of barely 18 years old, evidently the country breed, and now, as it seemed, on his first visit to the town. He was wearing a tough gray coat, which was in good shape, but which had seen many winters before this one. The garments under his coat were well constructed of leather, and fitted tightly to a pair of muscular legs; his stockings of blue yarn must have been the work of a mother or sister, and his head was a three-cornered hat, which in its better days had perhaps sheltered the grayer head of the lad’s father. In his left hand was a walking stick, and his equipment was completed by a leather bag not so abundantly stocked as to inconvenience the strong shoulders on which it hung. Brown, curly hair, well-shaped features, bright, cheerful eyes were nature’s gifts, and worth all that art could have done for hisadornment. The youth, whose name was Robin, paid the boatman, and then walked forward into the town with a light step, as if he had not already traveled more than thirty miles that day. As he walked, he surveyed his surroundings as eagerly as if he were entering London or Madrid, instead of the little metropolis of a New England colony. (15分)(1) The story took place in ______. Some people say that human beings are the only animals that have language. Is this true? It is a very difficult question to answer. A person must have a good definition of “language”. Different kinds of animals must be studied. Some animals certainly seem to have a communication system. That system may or may not be a language. For example, the bee has ways of telling other bees about food. The dolphin has ways of giving information to other dolphins. The monkey can use ahuman language system. Does this mean animals have language? The answer to this question depends on how “language” is defined. We may define language as any system for exchanging information. If this definition is used, then bees, dolphins, and monkeys all have a language. But language may be defined in another way. We may define language as a system for exchanging information by making new combinations of symbols. If this definition is used, then bees and dolphins do not have a language, but monkeys may have one. Monkeys are clearly able to combine symbols in a human language that they have been taught. This is not their usual language, however. (15分)(1) What do some animals seem to have according to the passage? Research shows that the average high school student will study four hours per week for any major test. The outcome of this four hours of study varies from an A to an F, which means in high school grades are strongly determined by intelligence since every one studies the same amount of time. But college is different. Most of the students are highly intelligent and each has plenty of time for self study. To score high on any test, a college student has to work hard and, probably more importantly, know how to use his or her time most efficiently. The problem is that your study habits formed in high school may makeyou unable to study well in college because you have never experienced what it takes to perform at the college level. That is why the freshman year is the hardest year for all college students.Based on my extensive observation of student performance on college tests., I recommended the following study time per test: 6 hours per week for an A,4 hours for a B, 3.5 hours for C, 2.5 hours for a D and 0 hours for a F. An hour of study is defined as studying for 45 minutes and break of 15 minutes. Ten hours of continuous study without a break is defined as one hour of study. The brain does not process and store information the way students prefer studying. Occasionally, some succeed by studying at the last minute, but they are exceptions to the rule.Research also suggests that the slowest 10 percent of the students may need 5 to 6 times as much time to learn the same material as the fastest 10 percent. Each person is very likely to have strengths and weaknesses. Overcoming your weakness increases your strength.(15分)(1) According to the writer, the reason why high school students get different test results is that . Among the few scientists who have had a great effect on science and history, Albert Einstein is perhaps the greatest. An American university president once commented that Einstein had created a new view of the universe. His theory hascompletely changed the way scientists understand time and space. Now, more and more people agree that the universe is something complicated than what they have ever thought before.Einstein was born is Germany in 1879. By 1914, young Einstein, already internationally famous, became a professor at an institute in Berlin. He had few duties, little teaching and unlimited opportunities for study. However, his peaceful life was soon broken by the First World War.Einstein hated violence. He was deeply affected by the war; he sat unhappily in his office doing little and lost interest in his research. Only when peace came in 1918 was he able to get back to work.In the years following the First World War, people showered honors upon him. He became the head of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute of Theoretical Physics. In 1921 he won the Noble Prize for Physics and was greatly honored and respected in Germany. However, his life was again disrupted. The Second World War broke out and Einstein had to move to the US, where he lived until his death in 1955. (10分)(1) The first paragraph is mainly about _______. In fact, we tend to fully realize the importance of good health only when we or those close to us become seriously ill. At such times we keenly appreciate the ancient truth that health is our most precious asset, one for which we might readily give up such rewards as power, wealth, or fame(荣誉).Because ill health is universal problem, affecting both the individual and society, the human response to sickness is always socially organized. No society leaves the responsibility for maintaining health and treating ill health entirely to the individual. Each society develops its own concepts of health and sickness and authorizes certain people to decide who is sick and how the sick should be treated. Around this focus there arises, over time, a number of standards, values, groups, statuses, and roles: in other words, an institution(体系;机构). To the sociologist(社会学家), then, medicine is the institution concerned with the maintenance of health and treatment of disease. In the simplest pre-industrial societies, medicine is usually an aspect of religion. The social arrangements for dealing with sickness are very elementary, often involving only two roles: the sick and the healer(治疗者). The latter is typically also the priest (牧师), who relies primarily on religious ceremonies, both to identify and to treat disease: for example, bones may be thrown to establish a cause, songs may be used to bring about a cure. In modern industrialized societies, on the other hand, the institution has become highly complicated and specialized, including dozens of roles such as those of brain surgeon, druggist, hospital administrator, linked with various organizations such as nursing homes, insurance companies, and medical schools. Medicine, in fact, has become the subject of intense sociological interest precisely because it is now one of the most pervasive andcostly institutions of modern society.(10分)(1) Which of the following statements is true according to Paragraph 1? When children learn a language, they learn the gr ammar as well as the words or vocabulary. No one teaches them; children just “pick them up”.Before babies begin to produce words, they produce sounds. Some of these sounds will remain if they occur in the language being acquired, and others will disappear. This is called the “babbling(牙牙学语)stage”. A child does not learn the language “all at once”. The child first utterances(言语)are one-word sentences. After a few months, the two-word stage arises. During this stage, the child puts two words together. These two-word sentences have definite patterns and express grammatical and meaningful relationships. Still later, in the telegraphic stage, the child will produce longer sentences. These longer sentences are mainly made up of content words. The child s early grammar lacks many of the rules of the adult grammar, but eventually it will become mature. All normal children everywhere learn language. This ability is not dependent on race (种族), social class, geography, or even intelligence. This ability is uniquely human. (10分)(1) This passage is mainly about _________. But drivers will rush you; storekeepers will be in a hurry as they serve you; people will push past you as they walk along the street. You will miss smiles, brief conversations with people as you shop or dine away from home. Do not think that because Americans are in such a hurry they are unfriendly. Often, life is much slower outside the big cities, as is true in other countries as well. Americans who live in cities such as New York, Chicago, or Los Angeles, often think that everyone is equally in a hurry to get things done; they expect others to “push back”, just as city people do in Tokyo, Singapore or Paris, for example. But when theydiscover that you are a stranger, most Americans become quite kindly and will take great care to help you. Many of them first came to the city as strangers and they remember how frightening a new city can be. If you need help or want to ask a question, choose a friendly looking person and say, “I am a st ranger here. Can you help me?”Most people will stop, smile at you, and help you find you way or answer your questions. But you must let them know that you need help. Otherwise they are likely to pass you by, not noticing that you are new to the city and in need of help. Occasionally, you may find someone too busy or perhaps too rushed to give you aid. If this happens, do not be discouraged; just ask someone else. Most Americans enjoy helping a stranger. (10分)(1) Many people who first visit the United States will find that _______. The SOS mothers are regarded as great examples of maternal care. They are admired and respected for their committed work and patience in the care of so many children, normally six to ten kids in a family. For the kids of the village, the celebration has turned out to be twice as important. For them, it is not a common mother’s day. Many have lost their biological mothers, others have no contact with them, and a few cannot live with them because their mothers and family are in trouble. In this context, the SOS mother is everything to them, and, of course, she receives all their attention and love during this celebration. At school, the kids prepare special cards for their mothers. Most of the time, they make them with their own hands, while other children, the more imaginative, add on a little flower, often taken from the garden of a neighbor. At the end of the day, though, no child forgets to give a present to his mother. They all love them and feel proud of having someone like her when Mother’s Day arrives. At school, they shout out “Mummy” in front of their school mates, kind of trying to underline that they also have a mother.Right on Mother’s Day, which is commemorated the second week of May in Ecuador, I came across Zoila, an experienced SOS mother. And as I took the chance to ask her what it feels like to be an SOS mother, she answered, “I am proud of being a mother, and I feel happy to have the chance to care for innocent, ingenious and mischievous creatures—my sons and daughters. They are so young that they give me their love with total sincerity. They don’t seem to expect anything from me but just an ‘I care for you and I love you’. I don’t have children myself, but these kids really make me feel like a mother—more human, fuller of life. This work is hard, but the recompense of my children is absolutely great.”So, Happy Mother’s Day to every woman in the world! All we really know is that men, unlike animals, somehow invented certain sounds to express thoughts and feelings, actions and things, so that they could communicate with each other; and that later they agree upon certain signs, called letters, which could be combined to represent those sounds, and which could be written down. Those sounds, whether spoken or written in letters, we call words. The power of words, then lies in their associations—the things they bring up before our minds. Words become filled with meaning for us by experience; and the longer we live, the more certain words recall to us the glad and sad events of our past; and the more we read and learn, the morethe number of words that mean something to us increase. Sending text messages from your mobile phone while driving is more dangerous than driving under the influence of drink or drugs, a study by Britain's Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) has found. The reaction time of people texting as they drove fell by 35 percent, while those who had drunk the legal limit of alcohol, or taken cannabis, fell by 21 percent and 12 percent respectively, according to the study. The study, which was commissioned by the motoring group RAC Foundation, also found that while texting the driver’s ability to stay in lanes or keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front was worse than those who were under the influence of cannabis.“This research shows how dangerous it is to text while driving,” TRL Senior Human Factors Researcher Nick Reed said in a statement. He pointed out that drivers who texted were distracted by taking their hand off the wheel to use their phone, by trying to read small text on the phone display and by thinking about how to write their message.“The combination of these factors resulted in the impairments to reaction time and vehicle control that place the driver at a greater danger than having drunk alcohol to the legal limit for driving,” Reed told reporters. One conclusion researchers made about why texting is so dangerous is the length of time it takes to write a message while driving. The TRL said that writing a text message behind the wheel took 63seconds, in which time acar travels half a mile within town centre speed limits and over a mile within motorway speed limits.Nearly half of all 18-24 year-olds admitted to texting as they drove, a separate survey by theRAC Foundation discovered. The TRL study selected 17 people from the 18-24 year-old age group to take part in asimulated road test, in which they were asked to read, write, and ignore texts on a variety of roads.“Almost all the participants in this study shared the same view that drink-driving was themost dangerous action on the road,” RAC Director Stephen Glaister said.He said the research clearly showed that a driver who is texting is significantly more impaired than a driver at the legal limit for alcohol.“No responsible driver would drink and drive,” Glaister said in thes tatement. “We need tomake sure that text fans understand that texting is one of the most dangerous things that canbe done while in charge of a car.”(15分)(1) Which of the following statements is true according to the passage? 中南大学大学英语口语考试题目(2)

中南大学大学英语口语考试题目(2)

DO YOU THINK THAT HOME-SCHOOLING IS UNSUITABLE FOR MOST FAMILIES ?A(FOR) B(AGAINST)A--In my opinion,home-schooling maybe suitable for some special families and their children, but is not suitable for most families. Schools have been in existence for centuries as suitable place to educate student. School education is more disciplined ,organized ,standard ,comprehensive ,as opposed to home-schooling .There is no doubt that school education should be more suitable for most families and their children .B--I don't think I can agree with the view just expressed, like most things ,home-schooling has its positive side and negative side .but the advantage of home-schooling ,I think ,far outweigh its disadvantage .A--There are many issues to consider .Home-schooling becomes the primary job of the parent once it's started .Parent don't need to have PhD's in order to teach their children. But, if a parent has had only 7th grade education, it's going to be hard to teach higher levels. If a parent can't read, then it's very difficult to teach another person anything that involves any level of reading.B--Such parent that you said just is only a few part .Though people can't home-school through college ,most families could provide a better quality education to their children through primary even senior school .And the purpose of education should not be filling a child with fact like public school .We should educate our children for life ,not just for achievement test .A--It's feared that in home-schooling children may not be able to rise above the level of academic achievement of their parent .Not every father or mother is a good teacher who is experienced in teaching ,you know .B--Study after study has show that children that are home-schooling outrank their public and private school peer in every academic area .There is also the benefit of reducing your children exposure to peer pressure regarding drug alcohol and sexual activities .it's also an alternative for families living in isolated rural location or living temporary aboard .A--That most home-schooler seem to live on remote farm or have unique lifestyle make it possible for them to be deeply involved in their children education ,but home-schooling children might lose their social skill .It may be difficult to foster in home-schooling a sense of the collective ,cooperation ,team work ,communication skill .B--As you said ,may be all of us should think it out again .IF THE ONLY WAY TO PRESERVE PEACE IS TO PREPARE FOR WAR ?A(FOR) B(AGAINST)A--In my esteem ,preparing for war is the only way to preserve peace .If a county doesn't prepare for war ,he will have few concerns that he will not endeavour to strengthen military force .A liberty ever said ' live in worry ,die in happiness '.A country who has not strong military force ,some developed countries will tend to exploit them for some benefits or damage its benefit which may cause dispute that disobey the peace .B--Conflict should be resolved through peaceful means ,war is human tragedy ,millions of people die and families fall apart as result of war .
