Former Irish President Mary Robinson was just making a polite conversation with an Ethiopian(埃塞俄比亚的)teenager about her wedding day. The 16-year-old had already been married for a year."She looked at me with the saddest eyes and said, 'I had to drop out of school,'" Robinson said in a telephone interview."That conveyed to me the reality, "said Robinson, the first woman to serve as Ireland's president and former U.N.high commissioner for human rights."Her life, as far as she is concerned, had more or less ended."Robinson said keeping girls in school was one of the most important things policymakers could do to address the coming challenges of an ever-increasing population, predicted by the United Nations to reach 7 billion soon."European countries are concerned about aging populations as is Japan, but this is much less of an issue than the huge number of people which we are going to see over the next 40 years when the population goes from 7 billion to 9 billion, "she said."Almost all of that increase will be in poor developing countries, so that we have a very big challenge."Family planning experts worry in particular about the future population explosion in sub-Saharan Africa. In May, the United Nations projected the world population would reach 9.3 billion in 2050 and 10.1 billion by 2100. Much of that growth will come from Africa, where the population is growing at 2.3 percent a year—more than double Asia' s 1 percent growth rate. If that rate stays consistent, which is not certain, Africa's population will reach 3.6 billion by 2100 from the present 1 billion.Joel Cohen, a professor of population studies at Rockefeller University and Columbia University in New York, said universal secondary education offered a way to reduce population in high birth-rate regions. In addition to providing information about birth control, a secondary education teaches women to reduce their own fertility(生育力), improve the health of their children and allows them to move from a mind-set of having many children, in the hopes that some will survive to improving the quality of each child's life, Cohen wrote in the journal Nature.59. In the first paragraph, the author introduces his topic by_____.A. explaining the author's opinionsB. giving an exampleC. describing the poor education systemD. coming straight to the topic60. What can we learn from the passage?A. Robinson is happy after talking to the Ethiopian girl.B. Robinson is a successful expert in population studies.C. Robinson is worried about population growth.D. Robinson encourages female education.61. What is Joel Cohen's view about secondary education?A. It provides basic knowledge of health.B. It improves the health of children.C. It makes people pay more attention to education.D. It can change people's parenting ideas.62. According to the passage, the most important way to control high population growth is .A. keeping girls in schoolB. letting girls go away from AfricaC. letting young girls remain singleD. keeping girls in families2.阅读下列短文,从短文后所给各题的四个选项(A、 B、 C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

I'd go out on my dad's fishing boat, and every birthday I'd get a tiny boat with a viewing window. In Michigan, we're surrounded by lakes and I soon discovered that I loved diving and even skipped school days for the coast.Three years ago, I successfully put forward an idea of running glassbottom boat tours to my husband. We headed out on the Cheboygan River and Lake Huron, running five trips every day over summer. We sailed past lots of places of significance, with a historian on board explaining the history. We often scanned the river to see what we could find. One weekend while diving, I managed to find a giant shell. Then I saw a green bottle on top of a fishbed and I picked it up. I swam to my boat, took a photo and then opened the bottle. It had paper inside. I unfolded the paper and saw the date—November 1926. The note read,“Return this paper to George Morrow.” It gave me a big surprise to have found it.We made sure to keep the paper safe. I kept the bottle. Before leaving the shore, I posted a picture on my social media page and didn't expect what followed. The next morning, my phone blew up with messages. While I was driving home, I got a phone call from Michele Primeau. She told me she was George Morrow's daughter.I didn't believe her at first. She said her dad would float notes in bottles when he went on vacation or hide them in walls when redecorating. She worked out he had posted this one on his 18th birthday. In autumn, Michele came to visit. She brought some of his writing and the handwriting matched. She insisted I keep the message and the bottle. It now sits in a glass case in my shop. That post now has 87,000 likes. In a hard year, the discovery has brought pure joy. For a diver, this feels like a lifetime achievement.4.What can be known about the author from the first paragraph?A.She would receive many gifts on her birthday.B.She hated going to school when she was young.C.She was very enthusiastic about boats and diving.D.She would go boating with her father over summer.5.How did the author feel when she read the note?A.Curious. B.Amazed.C.Doubtful. D.Excited.6.What happened to the bottle in the end?A.It was hidden in the wall again.B.It was thrown back into the river.C.It was brought back home by Michele.D.It was kept by the author as a souvenir.7.What is the purpose of the author in writing this passage?A.To stress the power of social media.B.To show off her great achievements.C.To mark her glassbottom boat tours.D.To share her fun experience as a diver.C[2022·云南省第一次高三复习统一检测]More plants are growing and expanding around Mount Qomolangma as the area continues to experience the consequences of global warming, researchers have found.Scientists from the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom used satellite data to establish increases in subnival vegetation—plants that grow between the tree line and the snow line.Using NASA Landsat satellite data from 1993 to 2018, scientists measured“small but significant” increases in vegetation cover between 4,150 and 6,000 meters above sea level.“There are now more areas that are covered in p lants than there were in 1993,” said Karen Anderson, a remote sensing scientist who led the research.“We don't know what the impact is. It may be that plants trap snow and might cause it to melt more slowly. It might be that the plants cause the snow to melt more quickly,” she added.1.4 billion people depend on water collected in the region, and changes to water cycles and supplies could have farreaching impacts, their research, published in the GlobalChangeBiology journal, said.“We know that plants a nd the water cycle are coupled,” Anderson explained. “Wherever you have plants growing, it changes the way the water cycle behaves inthose areas.”“This is particularly important in the Himalayas because glaciers are receding, and we know from lots of scientific work that this is already affecting water supplies in this region,” she added.Climate change is already having an impact on Himalayan communities. A 2019 study from Columbia University found that Himalayan glaciers have been losing almost half a meter of ice each year since the start of this century. This is already resulting in flooding for local communities, and could ultimately result in drought. In 2019, an assessment from the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development found that at least a third of the ice in the region could melt by the end of the century.8.What did Karen Anderson say about their finding?A.The increase in Himalayan vegetation is huge.B.The plants prevent snow from melting.C.Water supplies have been affected in the Himalayas.D.Loss of Himalayan glaciers is continuing each year.9.What does the underlined word “coupled” in Paragraph 7 probably mean?A.Contradicted. B.Balanced.C.Opposed. D.Linked.10.What can be inferred about the research of the Anderson team?A.It has not been published.B.It is based on remote sensing technology.C.It involves a great deal of field research.D.It is jointly conducted with Columbia University.11.What is the text mainly about?A.Climate change is making Mount Qomolangma lower.B.Plant life is expanding around Mount Qomolangma.C.Why this year has been so dangerous for Mount Qomolangma.D.Urgent research is needed to understand the increase in vegetation.D[2022·南京市、盐城市高三一模]I'm rather good at using maps. But I forgot the maps and here we were, late afternoon, last day of vacation, my daughter, my cousin and I, driving along a twolane highway in Oregon. No other car in sight, and the sun had just gone down. Where was that sweet little village? It was supposed to be right along this river. We drove on, farther into the unknown river always at left as our guide. We kept passing farms and fields and now a few lights were coming out. In my head, I was doing a lot of selfcriticisms: Why didn't we start earlier, bring the map and so on? My cousin and I were both impatient and stressed. My daughter, at least, was happy in the back seat, texting a friend.I pulled up on the shoulder of the road to think.Just then—Wow! Amazing! A new scene appeared. Where did it come from?Right there, out of nowhere: a magical misty landscape. Fields stretched in silent purple, with rows of tall trees, darkening in the dusk (黄昏). I turned the car engine off. All was silent in the hot summer air. Beside us, a plumcolored river hardly moved between a border of trees, its dark lazy water reflecting the last light of day.How breathtaking! Where had it been? If I had seen even a bit of this beauty while driving along, I could have stopped and taken a look. I had missed it all.We miss a lot, almost e verything, in fact, in our world. Our taskfocused filters (过滤器) take care of that, selecting only what we need. We need to get to work. Have some lunch. We see what we need to see, often for purposes of survival. Gregory Bateson, speaking of beauty, said the judgment is selection of a fact. In our daily lives, who or what is doing the selecting? Can we make a change? Can we see further?12.Which of the following might be the destination of the author's driving?A.Her own home. B.A vacation spot.C.A tourist centre. D.Her cousin's farm.13.What made the author keep blaming herself in the beginning?A.That the vacation was below her expectations.B.That she wasn't as good at using maps as before.C.That her cousin and daughter couldn't get along.D.That lack of full preparations got her to lose her way.14.The author felt really amazed because ________.A.her carelessness brought an unexpected pleasureB.she discovered a tourist spot unknown to the publicC.she unintentionally reached what she had plannedD.the right route to her destination came out of nowhere15.What does the story intend to tell us?A.Stay cool when you are trapped in trouble.B.Make a change for the purpose of survival.C.Slow down your pace to enjoy the beauty in life.D.Be positive because there's always an alternative.第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

This link could be deeply rooted in our evolutionary past when help with childcare was important for the survival of the human species,” said Sonja Hilbrand, one of the researchers. The findings are drawn from data on more than 500 people over age 70. Overall, after accounting for grandparents' age and general state of health, the risk of dying over a 20year period was onethird lower for grandparents who cared for their grandchildren, compared with grandparents who provided no childcare.Caregiving was associated with a longer life even when the care receiver wasn't a relative. Half of all childless seniors who provided support to friends or neighbors lived for seven years after the study beg an, while nonhelpers lived for four years on average.“Caregiving may give caregivers a purpose of life because they may feel useful for others and society. Caregiving may be thought also as an activity that keeps caregivers physically and mentally active,” said Professor Bruno Arpino.Arpino noted, however, that caregiving is not the only activity that can improve health and that too many caring responsibilities can take away from other beneficial activities like working, being in social clubs, or volunte ering. “Children should take_into_account their parents' needs, willingness, and desires and agree with them on the timing and amount of childcare,” he suggested.“It is very important that every individual decides forhimself/herself, what ‘proper amounts of help’ means,” Hilbrand said, adding, “As long as you do not feel stressed about the intensity (强度) of help you provide you may be doing something good for others as well as for yourself.”体裁:议论文题材:社会文化主题:祖父母适当照顾孙辈对身体有益【语篇导读】德国柏林一项研究发现,祖父母适当地帮忙照顾孙辈比不照顾孙辈的老年人寿命长。

And none of your business. But her coming will be a fine thing for our five boys.”“How so? How can it possibly affect them? ”“My dear love: those lazy boys need something to wake them up.There are bound to be jobs going.”“ Is that her point in settling here? Surely as a woman she has simply taken a fancy to the place.”“ Nonsense,my love, how little you’ve noticed the world has changed. She’s got a first-rate degree and some sort of business qualification,I’m told. She surely needs one of our boys! Perhaps you might give her a call.”“ Me? No.Perhaps you can take an interest. You still have your looks, after all.She may even offer you a job.”“Oh,that’s not like ly.These new chances belong to the younger generation. But now you mention it,I think I’ll go along all the same.”And Mrs Bennet went along. That was 10 years ago.She is now managing director of a FTSE-listed company....It would remain the case,of course, that Mrs Bennet would be one of very few women on the company board, that her salary would be lower than her male colleagues, her bonus of a more “female” dimension and her lifespan (年限) among the city’s business leaders shorter than theirs.Still, she’d no dou bt have enjoyed Davos—and might even have hobnobbed (攀谈) with influential figures.1.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?( )A.Austen was born 200 years ago.B.Austen rewrote Pride and Prejudice.C.Austen’s success lies in her wisdom.D.Austen’s updated work gains popularity.2.The underlined part in the passage suggests that Mrs Bennet . Passage 1A person who is able to speak more than one language is said to be bilingual. Being bilingual offers a lot of advantages. Bilingual people have better job prospects and can communicate with a larger population. There are several ways to become bilingual. The two most common ways are to learn a second language at school or to live in an environment where the second language is spoken. Both methods have their own advantages and disadvantages.Learning a second language at school is a gradual process. Students typically start learning a second language in elementary school and continue throughout their school years. The advantage of this method is that students can receive professional guidance from language teachers who specialize in second language acquisition. However, the downside is that students may not have the opportunity to practice speaking the language in real-life situations.Living in an environment where the second language is spoken allows for greater immersion(融入)in the language. When people live in a foreign country, they are forced to use the second language on a daily basis, which gives them ample opportunities for practice. However, this method may notbe as effective for adults as for children. Young children have a greater ability to absorb new languages, while adults may find it more challenging. In conclusion, becoming bilingual can offer numerous benefits. Learning a second language at school provides a structured approach with professional guidance, while living in an environment where the second language is spoken offers greater immersion in the language. Few laws are so effective that you can see results just days after they take effect. But in the nine days since the federal cigarette tax more than doubled-to $1.01 per pack-smokers have jammed telephone “quit lines” across the country seeking to kick the habit. This is not a surprise to public health advocates. They've studied the effect of state tax increases for years, finding that smokers, especially teens, are price sensitive.Nor is it a shock to the industry, which fiercely fights every tax increase. The only wonder is that so many states insist on closing their ears to the message.Tobacco taxes improve public health, they raise money and most particularly, they deter people from taking up the habit as teens, which is when nearly all smokers are addicted.Yet the rate of taxation varies widely. In Manhattan, for instance, which has the highest tax in the nation,a pack of Marlboro Light Kings, cost $10.06 at one drugstore Wednesday. In Charleston,S.C.,where the 7 cent a pack tax is the lowest in the nation, the price was $4.78.The influence is obvious. In New York, high school smoking hit a new low in the latest surveys-13.8%,far below the national average.By comparison,26% of high school students smoke in Kentucky.Other low tax states have similarly depressing teen smoking records.Hal Rogers,Representative from Kentucky, like those who are against high tobacco taxes, argues that the burden of the tax falls onlow income Americans “who choose to smoke.”That's true. But there is more reason in keeping future generations of low income workers from getting hooked in the first place. As for today's adults,if the new tax drives them to quit, they will have more to spend on their families, cut their risk of cancer and heart disease and feel better.【语篇解读】烟草税增加后,取得了立竿见影的效果——许多烟民纷纷戒烟。

The New Age of InventionInterviewer: Good evening, and welcome to Between the Pages. This evening, I’ll be talking to Dr Richard Fairhurst, whose new book The New Age of Invention has just been published. Welcome, Richard!Richard: Thank you. It’s a pleasure to be here.Interviewer: I guess you have been asked about the title of your book before. It suggests that the present day is a new age for inventions, but many people might think that the great age of invention is over.Richard: Well, that’s an interesting point. There have been golden ages of invention throughout history. Think of the four great inventions in Ancient China: gunpowder, papermaking, printing and the compass. These things changed the world forever. Then there were the great Western inventions: the steam engine, the telephone and the radio. And now, we find ourselves in the great new age of technology.Interviewer: So are most of the new great inventions tech-based?Richard: A lot, yes. For example, advances in virtual reality and wearable tech, as well as the flexible battery, mean we should soon be seeing further developments. In addition, important advances have been made in medicine and environmental science thanks to increasing computer power.Interviewer: Can you give us some examples?Richard: Sure. New inventions like 3D printers have been used to make replacement hearts and bone parts. In terms of the environment, it is now possible to create an intelligent walking house. It is capable of using GPStechnology to travel to different places, with computing technology controlling its “legs”. What’s mo re, huge advances in solar technology mean it can beeco-friendly, too.Interviewer:Impressive stuff! I’ve also been told that you’re an inventor yourself. Is that correct?Richard: Yes, I am, but I’m only one member of a big team—most inventors now work as part of big international teams.Interviewer: I see. So what is it that inspires us to invent things?Richard: Most inventions start with recognising a problem that needs a solution. This was no doubt the reason behind the invention of the wheel in ancient times, which much later developed into the car. Now, reduced energy supplies and environmental pollution have led to more advances in the technology of new energy vehicles. But what remains important is that we have an incredible desire to think and c reate, and that’s the real spirit of invention.Interviewer: One last question. This is the one everyone really wants to know: will anybody ever invent a time machine?Richard: I think you’ve been watching too many movies! Nothing like this has been invent ed yet and I’d say we’re a long way from an invention like that at the moment! But, as they say, “Never say never!”根据课文内容选择正确答案1. What do we know about Richard?A. He is an interviewer.B. He is the author of Between the Pages.C. He is writing a book called The New Age of Invention.D. His new book The New Age of Invention has come out.2. What does Dr Richard agree?A. The great age of invention is over.B. We ourselves are in a new age of invention.C. There will be a golden age of invention.D. The four great inventions in Ancient China are the greatest ones throughout history.3. What does " eco-friendly" probably mean?A. User-friendly.B. Family-friendly.C. Environment-friendly.D. Bicycle-friendly.4. What's the real spirit of inventors?A. Having a strong desire to think and create.B. Recognising a problem needing a solution.C. Having the belief " Never say never".D. With all the wars, fighting and sadness in the world today, it's not only necessary, but also essential to have a good sense of humor just to help us get through each and every day of our lives. Putting a smile on someone's face when you know they are feeling down in the dump, makes me feel good and warms my heart. How would you feel if you could not joke around with your wife, husband, child, co-worker, neighbor, close friends, or even just someone that you are standing in line with at your corner store? I am always saying things that make others smile or laugh, even if I don't know the person I'm joking around with. My Grandma always found humor in everything she did, even if it was the hardest job anyone could imagine. This not only relieves stress in any situation, but also is common courtesy(礼貌)to speak to others that are around you.I know of a few people that don't have a funny bone in their bodies, as they say.Everyone around them could be rolling on the floor after hearing a great joke and they would sit there without the slightest smile on their face. They don't get the joke that makes others laugh. I am busting__a__gut while they just sit there, looking at me as if I were from outer space. How can people not get a really funny joke?Laughing is essential to keep your stress levels under control. Without humor we would find ourselves with a lot of psychological problems, or on a lot of medications to keep us from going crazy. There is too much sadness in this present world. It drives people crazy. We all need to find a way to ignore the sadness and bring a little light into our lives. So, I believe our best medicine is to get together and tell some jokes and have some fun laughing together.【语篇解读】面对生活中的不如意,保持一种幽默精神可以让人觉得心情更好。

How to Graduate from College with a High GPA (Grade Point Average)One Hour a DayOne of the most challenging things about college is time management. It’s not that you don’t have enough. In fact you usually have too much time, and as a result time gets wasted. If you take good notes in class, and spend one hour reviewing your notes every day before going to sleep, you make use of the power of the subconscious (下意识) to absorb information and by the time exams come around you’ll know all the material on a subconscious level, and you don’t have to sit up the night before exams. Considering the amount of free time you usually have in college, one hour a day is not much in view of the long-term benefits.Select Easy CoursesIn your first term of college, load up on as many “easy A’s” as possible. There are several reasons for this. The first term of college is full of excitement as it is, and there are probably even more today than ever thanks to Facebook, Twitter, and more. The last thing you want to do is add difficult coursework to this. The other reason why selecting easy courses is powerful is that it allows you to start off your college career with an extremely high GPA. Good grades have less and less of an impact on your GPA later in your college career and raising your GPA becomes much more difficult. Selecting easy courses in the first term also leaves room for the occasional failure when coursework becomes more challenging.Join (or Form) Study GroupsIf you go to a large public school where classes often have 700 plus people, study groups are an extremely effective way to ensure good grades. Study groups are often led by older students who have taken the course and received A’s in that particular course. They also often provide you with resources such as practice tests, practice problems, and many others that might not be provided by professors.Use Personal DevelopmentI can honestly say I didn’t involve myse lf in personal development when I was in college. Looking back I realize that I suffered from low self-respect and a very unhealthy self-image. Without doubt this had a negative impact on my GPA. But, if I had combined personal development techniques with the three steps above, my college career would have turned out very different. If you have already started school, I recommend developing a strategy that applies these four ideas to yourcurrent schedule. If you haven’t started school yet, do some research on easier courses and what study groups might be available. If you follow through and commit to the four recommendations above, you’ll set yourself up for a very successful first term, and hopefully a very successful college career. Good luck to all of you starting the college journey.第五部分 书面表达(满分25分)66.without 67.reviewing/memorizing/learning/studying/revising 68.Select/Choose/Take/Attend 69.beginning 70.high/good/remarkable 71.member 72.resources 73.involved 74.positively 75.success 第四部分 任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入最恰当的单词。

2011届高三英语专题复习阅读理解练习(3)AImagine a boy from a small village in East Africa, He from a very early age has been looking after cattle. At twelve years old he knows mote about cattle than most of you. However, he has never been to school. Has dais boy ever had any education? Education is discovering about ourselves and about the people and things around us. All the people who care about us —our parents, brothers , sisters, friends —are our teachers. In fact, we learn something from everyone we meet. We start learning on the day we are born, not on the first day" we go to school . Every day we have new experiences, like finding a bird's nest, discovering a new street in our neighborhood, making friends with someone we didn't like before. New experiences are even more fun when we share them with other people.Encouragement from the people around us enables us to explore things as much as possible. As we grow up, we begin to find out what we are capable of doing. You may be good at cooking, or singing or playing football. You find this out by doing these things. Just thinking about cooking doesn't tell you if you are good at it.We learn so much just living from day to day. So why is school important? Of course you can learn some things better at home than at school, like how to do the shopping, and how to help old or disabled people who can' t do everything for themselves. At school, teachers help us to read and write. With their guidance, we begin to see things in different ways.1. The writer takes the African boy as an example to show that _______.A. Li said.6. According to the article, which of the following statements is true?A. China Motion Picture Industry Promotion Law, with the film rating system in it, has been put into practice.B. New Film Rating System Against some Unhealthy Western FilmsCA historic journey across the Solar System reached its end on Friday as a little probe (探测器)took a big step for human knowledge. The US $ 3 billion Cassini-Huygens mission(使命), a joint project of NASA and the European and Italian space agencies was launched in 1997 from Cape Canaveral, Florida, to study Saturn, its rings, its moons and its magnetosphere(磁层) —which surrounds it.Huygens was named after the Dutch scientist who discovered Titan in 1655, NASA officials said. Some science team members monitoring the flight at the European Space Agency's Space Operations Centre in Darmstadt, Germany, have waited tens of years to see the first of 750 pictures and other scientific readings from the yellow- skied moon." I have been in this mission almost 21 years and I' m very excited," ESA mission manager Jean -Pierre LeBreton said at a news conference on Thursday.“I’m also quite sure we arc goi ng to see something very special tomorrow (on Friday) "Timers inside the probe will awaken it just before it enters Titan's atmosphere. Huygens is shaped like a wok(锅) and covered with a heat shield(防护装置) so that it can survive the extreme heat that it will face upon entry. It will then unfold a series of parachutes to slow its fall to the moon's reddish surface, expected to take about 2.5 hours. As it goes down, the probe will lose its heat shield and unfold its special camera and instruments tobegin collecting information on wind speeds and the makeup of Titan's atmosphere. This is the momentscientists have been waiting for. This data will then be sent back to Cassini, which will relay it to NASA’s Deep Space Network in California and on to ESA controll ers in Darmstadt German. Scientists believe the organic chemical reaction taking place on Titan are similar to the process that gave rise to life on Earth. Its atmosphere is mostly nitrogen, like Earth, but its surface temperature of about minus 180℃ makes it improper to life.Titan, believed to be the only moon in the solar system with an atmosphere, is largerthan the planets Mercury and Pluto.9. I am no fan of computer games. Some guys forget themselves and forget day and night when they play games. For example, a colleague has been playing since 1 o’clock this morning and now it is 7 o'clock. He is still commanding his army of little people to attack strange-looking animals. Some games could be fun, 1 admit, and it is therefore understandable that such a game catches players. For example, games like Red Storm or some role-play games, you do something and try to outwit(智胜) your computer. You get some fun out of these games. It is understandable that such a game pushes you into a pitfall(陷阱) of pleasures. But some games look quite stupid and simple. Again for example, my colleague has been interested in Stone Age, a cartoon-like game rooted in prehistoric time. The game is well made, full of strange people and animals and you can play on line with partners. You can have reference books to study so as to shortcut your rivals(对手) and increase your own conquering power.I believe some kinds of games are really created for adults. But seeing these adults play the simple games with such interest, I just wonder if there is something wrong with me and if I am losing the greatest possible fun of my life. I ask why I don' t bother playing such games and why I seem to have some aversion(讨厌) to such games.I have no answers. Certainly computer games is no my idea of a good time. I would rather listen to some music or read a book. Take music for example. Good music tops my list of pleasures. Nothing could beat music, all in a harmony of sounds and emotions. But how about games? Why an I so strongly biased(偏见) against such games?12. From the passage we know that ______.A. the author is a fan of computer games.B. the author spends much time playing computer gamesC. the author once played a whole nightD. the author doesn't like playing computer games13. The radio operator in the control tower looked at his watch. It was 3:15 p.m. Lieutenant Charles Taylor and five Navy bombers were in trouble. "We are off course. We cannot see land…repeat…we cannot see land."The control tower grew silent. The operator garbed (戴上) his microphone. "What is your position? We are not sure of our position," Lieutenant Taylor replied. "We seem to be lost." Taylor had over 2,500 hours of flight time. What was happening? The tower called back: "Assume bearing(方位) due west." "We don't know which way is west," Taylor replied. "Everything is wrong…strange… We cannot be sure of any direction…Even the ocean looks odd…" The radio operator told Taylor to fly north "with the sun on the left" until he reached a Naval Air Station. Anyone could find the sun, especially a good pilot like Taylor. Soon the radio crackled again. "We have just passed over a small island," said the pilot. "No other land in sight." That was the last message Flight 19 sent to the radio tower. Five Navy bombers were lost. They had left the Naval Air Station for a routine(常规的) training flight at 2:00 p.m., December 5, 1945. Each plane had enough fuel to fly more than a thousand miles. The weather was sunny and mild. Pilots from other flights had not seen anything strange there. So what happened? How could five Navy bombers and their crews just disappear? The search for the five bombers covered 380,000 square miles of land and sea. Hundreds of boats and planes searched large areas of the Atlantic, the Caribbean, the Gulf of Mexico, the mainland of Florida, and many neighboring islands. Some of the boats were aircraft carriers, destroyers, and submarines. They searched the area for weeks. Nothing was ever found. No life rafts. No wreckage. Not even an oil slick(浮油). Oil from the engines should float on the surface, even if everything else had sunk.16. The pilot knew that they were in trouble when ______.A. The radio operator warned himB.
