副标题
一、阅读理解(本大题共15小题,共30.0分)
A
My wife and I owned two dogs that we had owned before we met and brought into the marriage. Her dog was a pit bull(斗牛犬)named Zack, and he hated me.When our daughter was born,I was worried that the family pit bull would be dangerous to have around our young daughter.I warned my wife that the dog would have to go at the first sign of trouble.I said,"If he nips(啃咬)at the baby,he's gone."
We brought our daughter home in a car seat, and both dogs sniffed(嗅)and licked her, tails wagging.I had to pull Zack away from her because he wouldn't stop licking her.Zack immediately became my daughter's protector, and when she was lying on a blanket on the floor,he always had one foot on the blanket.
Zack loved my daughter extremely, and when she became a little older always walked her to bed,and then slept on the bed with her.He somehow knew whenever it was time to go upstairs, and he would wait at the bottom of the stairs for her,and then follow her up to bed.Zack was poisoned by some neighbor kids, and we had one of the worst days of our lives.Watching my daughter say goodbye to him as he lay still on the kitchen floor,my wife and I were both sobbing.
At 8:00 that night,my daughter walked to the stairs to go to bed.At that moment, all three of us realized what was about to happen. My daughter looked at her mother and me with a look of horror and panic. It was at that moment that my dog,Sam who loved my daughter dearly, stood up,walked over to her,and nudged her with his head.He put his foot on the stairs, and looked up at her. They walked up to bed, with my daughter holding his neck tightly.

For almost a decade, researchers at the Svalbard Seed Bank in Norway have been collecting and storing samples of seeds from around the globe, carefully preserving them in a huge storeroom. Then one day in October of 2015,some scientists did something for the first time:they took the seeds out, rolling 138 black boxes containing 38,000 seeds out of the storeroom, through its doors and back into the world.
The Svalbard Seed Bank is perhaps one of the most famous seed banks,or gene banks
----places meant to conserve biodiversity so that,in the event of a disastrous event like drought, disease or war,key crop species can be repopulated. For the first Svalbard withdrawal, that was man-made----the seeds had been sent to Svalbard before rebels(叛乱者)took over another seed bank in Aleppo during the Syrian Civil War.The removed from Svalbard were sent about 3,000 miles to Lebanon and Morocco, where scientists will continue research that had begun in Aleppo,Syria.
Gene banks is a relatively new concept tied to a very old idea:collecting plants of interest in a particular space in the interest of scientific research. They trace their roots back to ,botanic gardens, which originally served as centers for the academic study of medicinal plants as early as the 16th century.Later,as Europeans expanded across the globe, scientists and collectors would bring back plants from foreign locations to gardens like the Royal Botanic Garden,Kew,in England.
As European collectors increasingly filled botanic gardens with crops from faraway places, the scientific purpose of the gardens became less important.Instead, scientists began creating collections of plant genetic material that could be accessed to help introduce valuable characteristics into plants. Then,in the 1960s and 1970s,the idea of collecting this genetic diversity in an organized and systematic way- in gene banks-was born.
Today, there are 1,750 gene banks around the world, preserving more than 7 million samples of seeds, cuttings or genetic material. They are crucial to preserving biodiversity.
5.Which can describe withdrawals at the Svalbard Seed Bank?______
A. They often cause problems.
B. They are strictly limited.
C. They are complex processes.
D. They take place very rarely.
6.W here did the research mentioned in Paragraph 2 start?______
A. In Morocco.
B. In Lebanon.
C. In Syria.
D. In Norway.
7.Why are seed banks important?______
A. Because they can reduce the prices of seeds.
B. Because they can preserve the variety of plants.
C. Because they can prevent seeds from getting diseases.
D. Because they can offer financial support to farmers.
8.What do we learn about botanic gardens in Europe?______
A. They rejected crops that came from overseas.
B. They had served as medical centers for a long time.
C. They are where gene banks originated.
D. They were first built in the 20th century.

Have you had enough of being tortured by the summer heat?Well, here is good news for you.
Researchers at Stanford University have developed a new material that can move heat out of buildings and into space. The researchers say the material can cool buildings even on hot days. The cooling material is a very thin sheet with many layers that could be placed on a roof like solar panels. However, instead of turning sunlight into energy as solar panels do,the
material turns heat into infrared radiation.
Shanhui Fan is an electrical engineering professor at Stanford University. He says that panels have a layer of material that is like sand.He says that the panels act like a mirror. They take heat out of buildings and reflect the light from the sun.He says both the heat and sunlight are sent 100 kilometers into outer space."It's a structure that cools itself without electricity input, even under the sun. So,what it does is basically radiate heat to outer space and also reflect the sunlight so it doesn't get heated up by the sun."
The panels are cool to the touch, even in the sun.Researchers say they can reduce the indoor temperature to nearly 5degrees Celsius below the temperature outside.Mr.Fan says it is like having a window into space. He says the heat is sent directly into space without warming the air.Besides, buildings in developing countries that do not have electricity or air conditioning could use the panels."In areas where one is off-grid,there is a significant potential benefit for storing medicine or even food.In many of these situations, being able to reduce temperature is important. And this would provide a way to do it."
The Stanford researchers described their technology in the science publication Nature. They say the main problem is creating actual cooling systems using the high-tech panels. They say it may be possible to develop a cooling spray that could be used on existing solid structures. But they are confident that the cooling spray technology could be developed in the next three to five years. They say as much as 15percent of the energy used in the United States is spent providing power to air conditioning systems.
12.What is mainly talked about in the passage?______
A. how to stay cool in summer
B. how to save electricity
C. a new cooling material
D. solar panels
13.What do we know about the features of the newly-invented panel?______
A. It turns sunlight into energy
B. It has a layer of sand
C. It can only be used where there is no electricity
D. It radiates heat to outer space and reflects the sunlight
14.Which of the following statements is not true?______
A. This new technology is published in the science magazine Nature
B. The cooling system by using high-tech panels is already in use in our life.
C. Researchers say the panels can reduce the indoor temperature to 5 degrees Celsius
D. People in off-grid areas would benefit from this new cooling material
15.What is the researchers' attitude toward the future of the cooling system?______
A. optimistic
