高中英语Unit1WomenofachievementSectionⅠWarmingUp
高中英语Unit1WomenofachievementSectionⅠWarmingUpⅠ.阅读理解AOn January 18, 1803, President Thomas Jefferson sent the U.S. Congress a message. He wanted to send a group of men to explore a_large_area_of_land that is now part of the United States. That group, led by men named Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, set out on May 14, 1804.The first part of Lewis and Clark's journey involved (包括) traveling up the Missouri River by boat. They had to travel upstream (逆流而上), so they pulled, pushed or forced the boats forward with poles. Heat and insects made the trip difficult. One member of the group died from an infection (感染) after only a few months. But the trip was very successful. Lewis and Clark discovered at least 180 species of plants and 120 animals on their journey. The explorers also named geological features they came across such as mountains and rivers. Many of these places still have the names of group members, their loved ones and even the group's dog.Native peoples lived in the lands that Lewis and Clark explored. Lewis and Clark met many Native American tribes (部落) on their journey. The explorers brought gifts for the Native Americans — beads, cloth, knives, mirrors and more. They hoped to build up trade with them. Most tribes agreed to trade with them, though some did not. Finally the group made it all the way to the Pacific Ocean in November 1805. They built a fort (营地) and spent the winter there. It was a difficult winter, but the group lived to head home.Lewis and Clark returned home to a hero's welcome. They had greatly expanded their country's knowledge of the lands to the west of it. They had developed friendly relations with many tribes and expanded scientific knowledge.【语篇解读】本文是记叙文。

一起来了解一下吧!Jane Goodall's journeyJane Goodall was born on April 3,1934,in England. Her parents divorced when she was eight years old and she moved with her mother to Bournemouth,England. In Bournemouth,Jane met the legendary wildlife expert,Sir Richard Attenborough, who taught Jane about the wonders of primates (灵长目动物) and the importance of preserving their habitats. In 1957,Jane was hired as a secretary to travel withLouis Leakey,a paleoanthropologist(古人类学家),toOlduvai Gorge in Tanzania. She was immediately trusted bya chimpanzee that she named David Greybeard. She soon beganfeeding David on a regular basis, and eventually David tookbananas straight from her hand and even allowed her to groom (刷洗) him.Other chimpanzees allowed Jane to observe them at close range later.Goodall soon began studying the Kasakela chimpanzee munity in Tanzania's Gombe Stream National Park. When studying chimpanzees,Goodall made several important discoveries about the animals. She first discovered that the chimps were intelligent enough to make tools from natural resources in their surroundings. It was the first time in history that animals other than humans had been documented constructing tools. Her observations led many scientists to consider the close evolutionary relationship between humans and chimpanzees.Goodall soon returned to England and obtained a doctorate(博士学位) from Cambridge University in ethology (animal behaviour).Goodall returned to Tanzania in 1965 and made more discoveries concerning thenature and society of chimpanzees. She gave names to the chimpanzees that she studied and recorded that each chimpanzee had distinct personalities, traits(特征),and behaviour. She wrote extensively about relationships within the chimpanzee society. In 1971,Goodall published IntheShadowofMan,in which she described her years of observations. The book focused on the events of the life of a female chimpanzee named Flo.In 1977,Goodall founded the Jane Goodall Institute to support continuous research into chimpanzee society.Goodall has received dozens of honored awards. In 2003,she was named as “Dame mander of the Order of the British Empire〞, an award similar to that of knighthood. In 2002,she was named a UN Messenger of Peace.[阅读障碍词]1.divorce n.离婚vt.与……离婚2.legendary adj.传奇的;著名的3.preserve v.保护;保持;保存4.document n.文档vt.证明;记录5.obtain v.获得6.distinct adj.明显的;清楚的7.focus on集中注意力于……;致力于……[诱思导读]根据短文内容判断正(T)误(F)1.Jane Goodall first discovered that the chimps simply could use tools made by humans.( )2.IntheShadowofMan mainly focused on the distinct personality of a female chimpanzee named David Greybeard. She and her organization were given the Noble Peace Prize in 1997.2. Let students read the following and examine the six women using the rules3. Have a discussion in pairs what they have in common and what makes them great and give their reasons. For reference:As great women, they don`t care for themselves at all, and at some point or rather, they must give some sacrifices, just like Lin Qiaozhi, she devoted all her life to medical work for Chinese women and children and had chosen not to have a family of her own. Instead, she made sure that about 50,000 babies were safely delivered totheir mothers. Not all people can do this. Once they have chosen their careers, they would carry on with them without any withdrawal. What they did is encouraging thousands of people to continue their careers. Those who are only famous but not great can`t matched.Step 3 Pre-leadingAsk students to answer some questions to lead in the new text. What do you think Jane Goodall went to Africa to study chimps rather than to university? Do you think she is right? Give some reasons. After a glance the title, what do you think the passage is about?Where doo you think the photos were taken? What do you think of when you see the pictures?Step 4 Reading1. Where did Jane Gooodall arrive at Gombe?(She arrived at Gombe in East Africa.)4. What did Jane do in the forest?(She studied the animals in the forest.)5). They -------.A. went into the forest slowlyB. left the chimp family sleeping in a treeC. observed the family of chimps wake upD. helped people understand the behavior of the chimps(2). Why did Jane go to Africa to study chimps in the wild? Because she wanted to -------.A. work with them in their own environmentB. prove the way people think about chimps was wrongC. discover what chimps eatD. observe a chimp family(3). Jane was permitted to begin her work after ------.A. the chimp family woke upB. she lived in the forestC. her mother came to help herD. she arrived at Gombe(4). Why?Step 6 Closing down by discussingLet students discuss the following questions:1). What should we learn from Jane Goodall?2). What made her a great success?3). What do you think is the best way to protect the wildlife? For reference:(Wisdom and courage; deeply love for the animals; her consideration; her hard work.We think there are two points that made her successful. One is her way to study chimps, and the other is her true love for the animals. The first one is facile, because it is only a way. Everyone can do it. But for the second one, it is more easily said than done. As a woman, she gave up everything, went to the forest to study the chimps and devoted all her love to these animals. It is really not easy. What we cannot understand is that how she has such a great personality. We should call for all the citizens to love animals, protect their living conditions, forbid hunters to kill them freely, build more natural reserves for them and we should not disturb them. The national wildlife protection parks shouldn`t be open to the tourists.Step 7 HomeworkLearn the useful new words and expressions by heart.Read the reading passage again and try to write something about Jane Goodall. The second period: Learning about language: Important language points The emphasis of this period will be placed on the important new words, expressions and sentence patterns in the parts Warming up, Pre-reading, Reading and comprehending. Now turn to page 1, look at the photos, read the captions and describe to your neighbor the women in focus. Who is she? What is she? What did she do to benefit the world?Warming up by discussingHi, every one. How did you spend your winter vacation? Did you read any books? Did you read any women of achievement? What makes a woman of achievement? Now in pairs discuss the women on page one. Which of these women do you think is a great woman? Give reasons for your choice.Warming up by reading aloud and translatingNice to see you back at school, boys and girls. As you have all prepared lessons before class I shall ask six of you at random to read aloud and translate the captions under the photos on page one. Zhao Yanfei, would you try reading aloud and translating the first caption? We ll done! Next let’s have Ju Xiaohong do the second one.Step II. Pre-reading1. Looking and sayingWork in pairs. She studies a family of chimps, delivers a speech on their behaviour, arguing for them to be left in the wild and protected. )2. Talking and sharingWork in groups of four. T ell your group mates what you know about wildlife protection. Then the group leader is to stand up and share your group idea with the class.(Key: I am from Group 3. Setting up special places where they can live safely is important and effective)Closing down by retelling the story of Jane GoodallI shall write some key words and expressions on the board.
