Invariably a few hands would go up.“What did you learn in that course?” I’d ask.“Well, the main th ing was learning how to face an audience ... not to be inhibited( 拘谨 )... not to be nervousExactly, when you take a course in public speaking nowadays, you don’ t hear much about grammar and vocabulary. Instead, you’ re taught how not to be afraid or embarrassed, how to speak without a prepared script, how to read out to the live audience before you. Public speaking is a matter of overcoming your long-standing nervous inhibitions. The same is true of writing. The point of the whole thing is to overcome your nervous inhibitions, to break through the invisible barrier that separates you from the person who’ ll read what youwrote. You must learn to sit in front of your typewriter or dictating machine and read out to the person at the other end of the line.Of course, in public speaking, with the audience right in front of you, the problem is easier. You can look at them and talk to them directly. In writing, you’ re alone. It needs an effort of your experience or imagination to take hold of that other person and talk to him or her. When rainwater collects on the surface of the ground, some of it evaporates and some of it sinks into the earth. The remainder begins to flow downhill, commencing its lengthy journey form brook to stream to lake, or to a river that will carry it to the sea.As water flows along the ground, it picks up sand, pebbles, even boulders. It uses them to gnaw at the sides and bottom of its channel, gradually loosening more earth.By this process enormous amounts of mud and rock are moved from the land to the sea. Each year the Mississippi River carries 730 million tons of solid matter into the Gulf of Mexico. This constant hauling of land into the sea is lowering the United States’ average height above sea level at a rate of about one foot every 9000 years. If erosion continues at the same rate, the United States will be worn completely down to sea level in about 23 million years.(1). The Average Height of the United StatesD. The Mighty Raindrop4. It is a great truth because once we truly understand and accept it. Then life is no longer difficult. Most people do not fully see this truth. Instead they complain about their problems and difficulties as if life should be easy. It seems to them that difficulties represent ( 代表 ) a special kind of suffering especially forced upon them or else upon their families, their class, or even their nation. What makes life difficult is the process of facing and solving problems and it is a painful one. Problems, depending on their nature, cause us sadness or, loneliness or regret or anger of fear. These are uncomfortable feelings, often as painful as any kind of physical pain. And since life causes an endless series of problems, life is always difficult and is full of pain as well as joy.Yet, it is in this whole process of solving problems that life has its meaning. Problems are the serious test that tells us success from failure. When we desire to encourage the growth of human spirit, we encourage the human ability to solve problems, just as in school we set problems for our children to solve. It is through the pain of meeting and working out problems that we learn. As Benjamin Franklin said, "Those things that hurt, instruct." It is for this reason that wise people learn not to fear but to welcome the pain of problems.(1). The saying from Benjamin Franklin "Those things that hurt, instruct" suggest that ( ).A. we do not learn from experienceB. we do not learn when we are painC. pain teaches us important lessonsD. pain cannot be avoid答案:一、单项选择题(60分,共 60 题,每小题 1 分)1. 大学英语综合教程3课文翻译

大学英语综合教程3课文翻译第一课:生活中的困扰原文:Living With RegretRegrets. We all have them. They can range from minor inconsiderate acts to major life-changing decisions. But no matter the scale, regrets serve as a constant reminder of our past mistakes and missed opportunities.Regrets often stem from our desires to change the past. We wish we had made different choices or taken different paths. We dwell on what could have been, rather than accepting what is. This obsession with the past can hinder our ability to live in the present and enjoy the opportunities that await us.Living with regret can be a heavy burden to carry. It weighs us down emotionally and mentally. We constantly replay the past in our minds, seeking to find a different outcome and trying to understand how things could have been different. This constant rumination can lead to feelings of guilt, sadness, and even depression.Regret can also have a negative impact on our relationships. If we are constantly dwelling on past mistakes, it can prevent us from fully engaging with others in the present. We may be hesitant to form new relationships or trust others, fearing thatwe will make the same mistakes again. This fear and hesitancy can limit our social connections and prevent us from experiencing the joys of deep and meaningful relationships. So how do we break free from the grip of regret? It starts with acceptance. Accepting that we cannot change the past, no matter how much we wish we could. We must forgive ourselves for our mistakes and learn from them. It is through learning and growth that we can move forward and create a better future. In addition to acceptance, it is important to focus on the present moment. By practicing mindfulness and being fully present in our daily lives, we can let go of the past and embrace the opportunities that come our way. Life is constantly changing, and if we are too focused on what has already happened, we may miss out on the beauty of what is happening right now.Regrets are a natural part of life, but they do not have to consume us. By accepting the past, focusing on the present, and learning from our mistakes, we can live a life free from the burden of regret.翻译:带着遗憾生活遗憾,我们都有。

One way is to teach students how to learn more effectively and efficiently. Learning strategies are "Procedures or techniquesthat learners can use to facilitate a learning task." Instructing students of English in learning strategies can help them becomebetter learners. In addition, skill in using learning strategies assists students in becoming independent, confident learners. Finally, students become more motivated as they begin to understand the relationship between their use of strategies and success in learning English. Students need to develop an awareness of the learningprocess and strategies that lead to success. Students who reflect on their own thinking are more likely to engage in planning how to proceed with a learning task, monitoring their own performance on an ongoing basis, finding solutions to problems encountered, andevaluating themselves upon task completion. These activities may be difficult for students accustomed to having a teacher who solves all their learning problems and is the sole judge of their progress. Teachers need to encourage students to rely more on themselves. Because learning strategies are mental processes with few observable manifestations, teachers need to find ways to make the strategies as concrete as possible. When students are able to use the strategies their teachers have taught them, and to do so without prompting, then they need to explore new strategies, new applications, and new opportunities for self-regulated learning.(1). Better learning strategies can make language learning more( ).A. funB.interestingC.efficientD.exciting(2). Students who reflect on their own ( )will be more successful in learning.A. thinkingB.evaluationC.performanceD. activities(3). Most animals have little connection with animals of different kind, unless they hunt them for food. Sometimes, however, two kinds of animals come together in a partnership ( 伙伴关系 ) which does goodto both of them. You may have noticed some birds sitting on the backs of sheep. This is not because they want a ride, but because they find easy food in the parasites (寄生虫 ) on sheep. The sheep allow the birds to do so because they remove the cause of discomfort. So although they can manage without each other, they do better together. Sometimes an animal has a plant partner. The relationship develops until the two partners cannot manage without each other. This is so in the corals (珊瑚) of the sea. In their skins they havetiny plants act as "dustman", taking some of the waste products form the corals and giving inreturn oxygen which the animal needs to breathe. If the plants are killed, or are ever prevented from lighting so that they cannot live normally, the corals will die.(1). Most animals only have connection with animals.C. The connection between the living things.D. Corals have some connection with plants.3. Exercise is one of the few factors with a positive role in long-term maintenance of body weight. Unfortunately, that message has not gotten through to the average American, who would rather try switching to “light” beer and low-calorie bread than increase physical exertion. Doctors found that less than one-fourth of overweight adults who were trying to reduce weight said they were combining exercise with their diet.Still, exercise’s supporting role in weight reduction is necessary.A study confirmed that those who dieted without exercise regained almost all their old weight, while those who worked exercise into their daily routine maintained their new weight. If you have been sedentary and decide to start walking one mile a day, the added exercise could burn an extra 100 calories daily. In a year’ time, assuming no increase in food intake, you could lost ten pounds. By increasing the distance of your walks gradually and making other dietary adjustments, you may lose even more weight.(1). According to the passage, what is the advantage of exercise mentioned by the author? ( )A. It can help you keep good health.B.It can help you maintain body weight.C. Bill Gates, the head of the world’s biggest computer softwarecompany, the Microsoft Corporation, has a mission: “to put a computer on every office desk and in every home”. Bill Gates has had this mission since he was a university student years ago. This deep personal interest, together with his technical skills and his business marketing skills helped him to create a giant computer company and to make him wealthy.Although he is so wealthy, Bill Gates does not want to give up. He is still very interested in his vision and he travels the globe, making quick stops in cities to sell the new software products of his company. The central vision of Bill Gates is the “information highway”. This is a network for computers that will link every home, office and shop in the future. This computer network system will have an effect on business, shopping and education. Bill Gates says that the main use of this new technology will be in communication. It will be a way to find people with common interests and to share opinions with them. But is this communication by computer along the “information highway” really a good thing? Won’t we be sitting at home, only “socializing” with our computer, paying big compani es money so that we can receive information that some large communication corporation somewhere had decided is “acceptable” for us to read? No, says Bill Gates, he thinks that the phrase “information highway” is aterrible phrase. It makes people think that we are all going down the same road, he says. In fact, the computer network will let us choose our own intellectual direction. It will give us freedom. It will also bring good to society, because it will allow for the spread of education. When more and more people receive education, the gap between the rich and the poor will narrow. In the meantime, however, the gap between the rich and the poor is still there. 大学英语3课文及翻译篇1The Expensive Fantasy of Lord WilliamsTomintoul, Scotland —On Saturday night at The Grouse's Nest, they're still willing to raise a glass or two to “Lord Williams” though now his title prompts laughter. And now they just call him “Tony”.There are those in this beautiful village in the mountains of Scotland (population, 320) who say they were never quite sureabout Anthony Williams, the soft-spoken, wealthy noble who arrived in 1986 with his well-dressed wife. And there are others who say their suspicions were aroused over time, as the 55-year-old Mr. Williams, who appeared onweekends turned out in fine suits, bought up property after property, providing such a large injection of cash into the villagethat he single-handedly brought the community back to life. But no one could have possibly guessed the truth — that the man with endless money and a friendly manner was not a lordat all but a government employee living out a fantasy that he was a Scottish noble and paying for it by stealing funds fromScotland Yard.About two weeks ago, a regretful Mr. Williams, who had worked for the London police since 1959 and had risen to a £65,000 a year position as deputy director of finance, was brought into court and sentenced to seven and a half yearsinprison.Estimates are that he poured nearly £5 million of the stolen money into the village and gave jobs to 43 people. And nowthat he has fallen upon dark days at least some villagers are sticking by him.“I found him a very charming man, very friendly, considerate —not at all proud,” said Georgie McAllister, 70, themanager of the local museum whose family has been farming the surrounding hills for generations. “It's hard to understandhow a clever person like him could mislead people like that. It's sad. Of course, it did benefit the village. A lot of the propertieswere beautifully restored.”A few doors down the square, barber Donald Corr sat inside his shop and described how suspicions began to grow. “Everyonewondered where the money was coming from. Why was he spending it in a little place in the mountains? Christ, he wouldn'thave gotten it back in 100 yea rs.”According to the court, Mr. Williams stole more than £8 million over eight years. Most of it came from a secret fund thathad been placed under his sole authority and that was supposed to be used to pay spies and conduct secret activities againstthe Irish Republican Army.Instead, it went to create one more British lord.Mr. Williams bought an estate with a fine brick house in England. He bought a beautiful home with white walls and a poolin Spain. He bought noble titles at auctions, spending £95,000 to become the Lord of Chirnside, and then adding on 10 moreScottish titles. But most of all, he sunk his dishonest gains into this village that captured his heart with its fine stone cottages, its centralareaof green grass, green rows of hedges, and its fantastic view of rolling fields and pine forests disappearing into the distancelike the men of an ancient army marching over the horizon. He bought multiple cottages and fixed them up. He purchased the pub and made it into a fine place to have a glass ofGlenlivet Scotch whiskey, produced only 10 miles (16 kilometers) to the north. And most of all, he bought the run-downGordon Arms Hotel and totally restored it, transforming it from a mess into a glorious first-class hotel with 30 handsomelyfurnished rooms, wood-paneled stairs, false bookshelves with fake leather books and an outstanding restaurant.“I would offer him three choices of glasses for the restaurant: an average one, a poor one, and fine crystal. Always, he chosethe crystal. Nothing but the best,” said David Abdy, who was chosen by Mr. Williams to manage the construction work andrun the businesses.Mr. Williams deceived everyone, including Mr. Abdy and including even his own wife, telling them that he inherited themoney from a rich uncle. He was caught because his bank deposits were so large that they were noticed by the bank'smanagement. The bank notified the police, who discovered, to their terrible embarrassment, that the criminal was one oftheir own.The London police commissioner publicly apologized for poorly supervising his department. Under a hastily madearrangement, the police will sell the properties, but at a substantial financial loss. Mr. Abdy, a 27-year-old businessman, acquired the bulk of the properties for about half a million pounds, obtaining bank loans and striking deals withvarious peopleto pay only a part of what they are owed by Mr. Williams. In the only interview he has given since his arrest a year ago, Mr. Williams discussed his motives for the crime with aLondon newspaper: “I discovered this bloody huge amount of money. I went from the need to pay off a few debts to what canonly be described as greed. There is no way to justify it.”翻译我哥哥吉米出生时遇上难产,因为缺氧导致大脑受损。

But why do people read newspapers?Five hundred years ago, news of important happenings —battles lost and won, kings or rulers overthrown or killed — took months and even years to travel from one country to another. The news passed by word of mouth and was never accurate. Today we can read in ournewspapers of important events that occur in far away countries on the same day they happen.Apart from supplying news from all over the world, newspapers give us a lot of other useful information. There are weather reports, radio, television and film guides, book reviews, stories, and of course, advertisements. The bigger ones are put in by large companies to bring attention to their products. They pay the newspapers thousands of dollars for the advertising space, but it is worth the money for news of their products to go into almost every home in the country. For those who produce newspapers, advertisements are also very important. Money earned from advertisements makes it possible for them to sell their newspapers at a low price and still make a profit.1. They had planned either to live in a furnished apartment or to buy used furniture. But they soon learned about a new system that more and more people are using. The renting of home furnishings (bed, tables, dishes, and so on) has become one of America’s fastest growing businesses. What kinds of people rent their home furnishings instead of buying them? People who are international businessmen or government officials, foreign students, airline workers, young married couples — people whose job or business may force them to move frequently from one city to another. They save a lot of trouble and the cost of moving their furniture each time. They simply rent new furniture when they reach their new homes. Young people with little money do not want to buy cheap furniture that they may soon dislike. They prefer to wait until they have enough money to buy furniture they really like. Meanwhile, they find they can rent better qualityfurniture than they could afford to buy.One family, who now have a large, beautiful home of their own, liked their rented furniture so much that they decided to keep renting it instead of buying new things. But usually people do n’t like to tell others about it. The idea of renting home furnishings is still quite new, and they are not sure what their neighbors might think.6. Renting furniture is still not popular with the majority of Americans.C. Only those who don’t have enough money rent furniture.D. People usually grow to like the furniture they have rented.9. Which of the following can best serve as the title of the passage?A. Rent or Buy?B. A New Way of Getting Home FurnishingsC. Furnished ApartmentsD. A New Idea10. Young people like renting home furniture in that_________A. They have less money.B. They don’t want to buy old furniture.C. The new furniture is of good quality.D. They don’t have much money and don’t want to buy the cheap furniture.Passage 3Spending 50 minutes with a cell phone close to your ear is enough to change brain cell activity in the part of the brain closest to the antenna(天线). But whether that causes any harm is not clear, scientists at the National Institute of Health said at a conference last month, adding that the study will not likely settle concerns of a link between cell phones and brain cancer. “What we showed is glucose (葡萄糖) metabolism(代谢)(a sign of brain activity) increases in the brain in people who were exposed to a cell phone in the area closest to the antenna,” said Dr. Nora Volkow, whose study was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. The study was meant to examine how the brain reacts to electromagnetic(电磁的) fields caused by wireless phone signals.Volkow said she was surprised that the weak electromagnetic radiation(辐射) from cell phones could affect brain activity, but she said the findings do not shed any light on whether cell phones cause cancer. “This study does not in any way indicate that. What the study does is to show the human brain is sensitive to electromagnetic radiation from cell phone exposures.” Use of the devices has increased dramatically since they were introduced in the early 1980s, withabout 5 billion cell phones now in use worldwide. Some studies have linked cell phone exposure to an increased risk of brain cancers, but a large study by the World Health Organization did not of fer a clear answer to this. Volkow’s team studied 47 people who had their brain examined while a cell phone was turned on for 50 minutes and another while the phone was turned off. While there was no complete change in brain metabolism, they found a 7 percent increase in brain metabolism in the region closest to the cell phone antenna when the phone was on.Experts said the results were interesting, but urged that they be understood with great care. “Although the biological significance, if any, of increa sed glucose metabolism from too much cell phone exposure is unknown, the results require further investigation,” Henry Lai of the University of Washington in the U.S. and Dr. Lennart Hardell of University Hospital in Sweden, wrote in an article in JAMA. “Much has to be done to further investigate and understand these effects.” They wrote.11. According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?A. Cell phone use is dangerous.B. Cell phone use causes cancer.C. The human brain is an electromagnetic field.D. There are about 5 billion cell phone users in the world right now.12. Doctor Volkow was astonished because ______.A. her research has shed light on her understanding of cell phoneB. she found that cell phone exposure is harmful to human brainC. she found that using a cell phone for about 50 minutes could influence or change brain activityD. human brain is not responsive to electromagnetic radiation13. According to the passage, cell phones were launched _______。

许多居住在城镇的人梦想着自己办个农场,梦想着靠土地为生。

但他写道,自己并不后悔,对自己作出的改变生活方式的决定仍热情不减。

After the violent earthquake that shook Los Angeles in 1994, earthquake scientists had good news to report: The damage and death toll (死亡人数) could have been much worse.More than 60 people died in this earthquake. By comparison, an earthquake of similar intensity (强度) that shook America in 1988 claimed 25,000 victims.Injuries and deaths were relatively less in Los Angeles because the quake occurred at 4:31 a.m. on a holiday, when traffic was light on the city's highways. In addition, changes made to the construction codes (准则) in Los Angeles during the last 20 years have strengthened the city's buildings and highways, making them more resistant to quakes.Despite the good news, civil engineers aren't resting on their successes. Pinned to their drawing boards are blueprints (蓝图) for improved quake-resistant buildings. The new designs should offer even greater security to cities where earthquakes often take place. In the past, making structures quake-resistant meant firm yet flexible materials, such as steel and wood, that bend without breaking. Later, people tried to lift a building off its foundation, and insert rubber and steel between the building and its foundation to reduce the impact of ground vibrations (振动). The most recent designs give buildings brains as well as concrete and steel supports. Called smart buildings, the structures respond like living organisms to an earthquake's vibrations. When the ground shakes and the building tips forward, the computer would force the building to shift in the opposite direction. The new smart structures could be very expensive to build. However, they would save many lives and would be less likely to be damaged during earthquakes.1.One reason why the loss of lives in the Los Angelesearthquake was comparatively low is that ___D_____.A. new computers had been built into the buildingsB. it occurred in the residential (居住的) areas rather than onthe highwaysC. large numbers of Los Angeles residents had gone for aholidayD. improvements had been made in the construction ofbuildings and highways2.The function of the computer mentioned in the passage is to______A__.A. counterbalance (抵消) an earthquake's action on thebuildingB. predict the coming of an earthquake with accuracyC. help strengthen the foundation of the buildingD. measure the impact of an earthquake's vibrations3.The smart buildings discussed in the passage ___B_____.A. would cause serious financial problemsB. would be worthwhile though costlyC. would increase the complexity of architectural designD. can reduce the ground vibrations caused by earthquakes4.It can be inferred from the passage that in minimizing thedamage caused by earthquakes attention should be focused on _____C___.A. the increasing use of rubber and steel in capitalconstructionB. the development of flexible building materialsC. the reduction of the impact of ground vibrationsD. early forecasts of earthquakes5.The author's main purpose in writing the passage is to_____D___.A. compare the consequences of the earthquakes thatoccurred in the USB. encourage civil engineers to make more extensive use ofcomputersC. outline the history of the development of quake-resistantbuilding materialsD. report new developments in constructing quake-resistantbuildingsQuestions 6 to 10 are based on the same passage or dialog.I'm 90 years old. The advantage of being 90 is that you can look forward to death. The world is getting noisier, sexier and more horrible by the minute, but at least I can comfort myself with the fact that the end is in sight. Or so I thought. Imagine my anger when I opened the newspaper and discovered they were going to make us live till 130. When you're 60 or 70 the thought of death crosses your mind like a shadow. It disturbs you, it worries you. But by the time you reach my age you hope for it.My body is dying on me. It's horrible. You start to smell—the smell of death—and you can do nothing about it. I can no longer see properly. You go deaf, and people talk to you as if you're a child. Your legs give up on you. Nowadays I spend so much time working out how to avoid making the trip downstairs more than once a day. When I do get out, I can barely walk more than a few yards—and according to those who know me, I'm lucky in good shape for my 90 years.Ah, but the world would be so much wiser, some people say. I'm afraid that's an illusion. As we get older, we lose our wisdom, our mind, and even our language. We would have a world in which no one could communicate because we'd have forgotten how to.No. The absolute nothingness of death is something to look forward to. If I discovered a medicine to make people live until 130, the first thing I'd do is to bury it.6.What is the advantage of being 90 years old?BA. You can become sexier.B. You can look forward to death.C. You can enjoy the world more.D. You can hear less noise.7.Why did the speaker get angry?AA. He learned people will live longer.B. He learned people will be noisier.C. He learned people will become sexy.D. He learned people will think about death.8.Why is the speaker lucky, according to some?CA. He doesn't have to walk much.B. He doesn't need to listen to others.C. He is in good health for his age.D. He is much wiser than before.9.What is an "illusion", according to the speaker?DA. That the world has become a better place.B. That the world has become sexier and noisier.C. That old people are happy to live longer lives.D. That old people are wiser than they were before.10.What would he do with a medicine that makes life longer?DA. Live 130 years.B. Become wiser.C. Forget where it is.D. Bury the medicine.Part 4 Reading Comprehension (Banked Cloze)(每小题:1 分)Directions: Fill in the blanks in the following passage by selecting suitable words from the Word Bank. And today, at 29, he has discovered the power of another good idea that has helped him rise in just a few years from a teenager to a rich businessman. He has become thefourth-largest manufacturer of personal computers in America and the youngest man ever to head a Fortune 500 corporation. Growing up in Houston, Michael and his two brothers were encouraged bytheir parents with the desire to learn and the drive to work hard. Even so, stories about the middle boy began to be told early.Early school lifePeople tried to talk him out of finishing high school early, but Michael explained that he thought it was best to get high school out of the way quickly.A few years later Michael had another good idea, to trade stamps by advertising in stamp magazines. With the $2,000 profit he made, he bought his first personal computer. Then he took it apart to figure out how it worked. In high school Michael had a job selling newspapers. This time Dell made $18,000 and bought a BMW. The car salesman was surprised when the 17-year-old had all the money he needed to pay for it. The next year Dell enrolled at the University of Texas in Austin. Like most freshmen, he needed to earn spending money. People wanted low-cost machines to meet their needs, and these were not readily available. Why should dealers charge so much for so little added value, Dell wondered. Why not sell from the manufacturer directly to the end user?Computer businessDuring a holiday break, Dell's parents told him they were concerned about his grades. "If you want to start a business, do it after you get your degree," his father begged. Dell agreed, but back in Austin he felt the opportunity of a lifetime was passing him by. "I couldn't bear to miss this chance," he says. After one month he started selling computers again.Over spring break, Dell confessed to his parents that he was still in the computer business. They wanted to know how classes were going. "I have to quit school," he replied. "I want to start my own company." "What exactly is it that you want to do?" asked his father."Compete with IBM," he answered simply.Compete with IBM? Now his parents were really worried. But no matter what they said, Dell wouldn't change his mind. So they made a deal: over summer vacation he would try to launch a computer company. If he didn't succeed, he would have to go back to school in September. Returning to Austin, Dell risked all his savings and incorporated (组成) Dell Computer Corp. When he was 19, heobtained a one-room office on a month-to-month lease (租借) and hired his first employee, a 28-year-old manager to handle finance and management. For advertising, he grabbed an empty food box and on the back sketched the first ad for Dell Computer. A friend copied it onto paper and took it to the newspaper.Dell still specialized in direct marketing of stripped-down (拆卸) IBM PCs to which he added custom features. As orders came in, Dell rushed around gathering up the right parts to assemble each order. First-month sales topped $180,000; the second, $265,000. Dell barely noticed when the new school year arrived.Within a year, he was selling thousands of PCs, so he hired more staff. Customers phoned orders to a toll-free (免费电话) line, and then the staff assembled the units. Trucks picked up daily that day's production for delivery. It was very efficient, and made a lot of money. Just when it seemed the sky was the limit, and sales had topped $3 million, the manager that Dell had hired quit. But, as Dell always told himself, "Every time you have a crisis, something good comes out of it." From necessity, he learned accounting that would prove very helpful in the years ahead. "It's a lot easier to learn something if it's important to you," he says.Unlike other manufacturers, Dell gave his customers money-back guarantees. He also realized that when a computer breaks down, the customer wants it working right away. So Dell guaranteed a next-day on site service for his products, and introduced a24-hour-a-day line for customers to talk directly with computer experts. Ninety percent of computer technical problems, according to Dell, can be solved over the phone.Constant telephone contact with customers kept the company close to the market. Customers let Dell Computer know directly what they liked or didn't like about a particular model. "My competitors were developing products and then telling customers what they should want, instead of finding out what the market really wanted and then developing products," Dell says. By the day Michael Dell would have graduated from college, his company was selling $70 million worth of computers a year.Successful careerToday Dell Computer has wholly owned subsidiaries (分公司) in 16 countries, including Japan. The company has capital of over $2 billion, employs some 5,500 persons, and Dell's personal fortune isbetween $250 million and $300 million. To encourage even greater productivity, Dell Computer gives its employees awards for ideas worth trying even if they don't succeed. "Our success has forced the giants to become more competitive," Dell says. "That's good for the consumer."Dell, his wife and their two-year-old daughter lead a pretty normal life. His charity is generous but quiet. Recently the couple announced they would give land to Austin's Jewish community. Dell also regularly lectures to MBA students at the University of Texas Graduate School of Business in Austin. He credits his own success to the fact that Alexander and Lorraine Dell expected their three sons to study and work hard. "The reason our schools are failing isn't because classroom sizes are too big. I can show you schools in Thailand where kids study in unbelievably crowded classrooms and yet they're learning much more than our students. Why? Because they want to learn, they want to work hard, because their parents and their teachers expect that of them."Back when his firm was two people in one room, Dell told his friends his dream was to become the world's largestpersonal-computer maker. He was unrealistic, they said. Why would anyone want to be second or third or tenth?" he replied.
