On the other hand, for parents, the period of their children's adolescence means regularly worrying about their safety and formation as a citizen. Thus, a method of ___22___teenagers' security is needed, and curfews(宵禁)are often seen as such a measure, since they have proved their ___23___the same time, certain peculiarities exist about establishing curfews for children. The issue of teenage curfews is widely debated in the United States, where this method is still rather ___24___, and in European democracies, where this measure is yet not so widely used .The first and foremost reason for establishing curfews is children's security. ___25___curfews require teenagers under 17 years to stay out of streets starting from 11p.m.or midnight. This is believed to protect them from crimes committed after nightfall,as well as from breaking the law, and there exists serious evidence ___26___this belief. For example, when New Orleans enabled a dusk-til-dawn curfew in 1994, the rates of juvenile crime were reported to fall more than 20 percent.Even more impressive ___27___were recorded in Dallas, which reported a 30-percent decrease in violent juvenile crime, and a 21-percent decrease in the overall rates of crimes committed by young people (The New York Times). On the other hand, curfews can be seen as a preventive measure that rob young people of their rights,___28___ their freedom. Some parents will buy any high-tech toy if they think it will help their child, but researchers said puzzles help children with math-related skills.Psychologist Susan Levine, an expert on mathematics development in young children the University of Chicago, found children who play with puzzles between ages 2 and 4 later develop better spatial skills. Puzzle play was found to be a significant predictor of cognition(认知) after controlling for differences in parents' income, education and the amount of parent talk, Levine said. The researchers analyzed video recordings of 53 child-parent pairs during everyday activities at home and found children who play with puzzles between 26 and 46 months of age have better spatial skills when assessed at 54 months of age."The children who played with puzzles performed better than those who did not, on tasks that assessed their ability to rotate(旋转)and translate shapes," Levine said in a statement. The parents were asked to interact with their children as they normally would, and about half of children in the study played with puzzles at one time. Higher-income parents tended to have children play with puzzles more frequently, and both boys and girls who played with puzzles had better spatial skills. However, boys tended to play with more complex puzzles than girls, and the parents of boys provided more spatial language and were more active during puzzle play than parents of girls. The findings were published in the journal Developmental Science.(1)In which aspect do children benefit from puzzle play?A.Building confidence.B.Developing spatial skills.C.Learning self-control.D.Gaining high-tech knowledge.(2)What did Levine take into consideration when designing her experiment?A.Parents' age.B.Children's imagination.C.Parents' education.D.Child-parent relationship.(3)How do boy differ from girls in puzzle play?A.They play with puzzles more often.B.They tend to talk less during the game.C.They prefer to use more spatial language.D.They are likely to play with tougher puzzles.(4)What is the text mainly about?A.A mathematical method.B.A scientific study.C.A woman psychologistD.A teaching program.2.(2019·浙江)阅读理解California has lost half its big trees since the 1930s, according to a study to be published Tuesday and climate change seems to be a major factor(因素).The number of trees larger than two feet across has declined by 50 percent on more than 46, 000 square miles of California forests, the new study finds. No area was spared or unaffected, from the foggy northern coast to the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the San Gabriels above Los Angeles. In the Sierra high country, the number of big trees has fallen by more than 55 percent; in parts of southern California the decline was nearly 75 percent. Many factors contributed to the decline, said Patrick Mclntyre, an ecologist who was the lead author of the study. Woodcutters targeted big trees. Housing development pushed into the woods. Aggressive wildfire control has left California forests crowded with small trees that compete with big trees for resources(资源).But in comparing a study of California forests done in the 1920s and 1930s with another one between 2001 and 2010, Mclntyre and his colleagues documented a widespread death of big trees that was evident even in wildlands protected from woodcutting or development. The loss of big trees was greatest in areas where trees had suffered the greatest water shortage. The researchers figured out water stress with a computer model thatcalculated how much water trees were getting in comparison with how much they needed, taking into account such things as rainfall, air temperature, dampness of soil, and the timing of snowmelt(融雪).Since the 1930s, Mclntyre said, the biggest factors driving up water stress in the state have been rising temperatures, which cause trees to lose more water to the air, and earlier snowmelt, which reduces the water supply available to trees during the dry season.(1)What is the second paragraph mainly about?A.The seriousness of big-tree loss in California.B.The increasing variety of California big trees.C.The distribution of big trees in California forests.D.The influence of farming on big trees in California.(2)Which of the following is well-intentioned but may be bad for big trees?A.Ecological studies of forests.B.Banning woodcutting.C.Limiting housing development.D.Fire control measures.(3)What is a major cause of the water shortage according to Mclntyre?A.Inadequate snowmelt.B.A longer dry season.C.A warmer climate.D.Dampness of the air.(4)What can be a suitable title for the text?A.California's Forests: Where Have All the Big Trees Gone?B.Cutting of Big Trees to Be Prohibited in California Soon.C.Why Are the Big Trees Important to California Forests?D.Patrick Mclntyre: Grow More Big Trees in California3.(2019·北京)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

We can learn a lot from kids, especially ones who are working on making the world a better place. GoFundMe started a program called Kid Heroes to celebrate them. The program includes an activity celebrating over 100 kid heroes, a Parents' Guide, and short videos showing the work of a few kid heroes. Last year, on November 28, GoFundMe donated (捐赠) $ 100 000 to the Kid Heroes program through their Gives Back program."The kids in the GoFundMe community were our source of inspiration (灵感), and in speaking to them, we realized that kids are often great role models for us adults because they don't have prejudice (偏见) and they just jump in and help, which is quite different from adults," said Raquel Rozas, chief marketing officer at GoFundMe.The program supports hundreds of kids who not only help solve problems in their community, but also help other kids in need. For example, there is Paul Burnett, who raised over $ 10 000 to buy a new wheelchair for his best friend Kamden. Through the Parents' Guide, parents are able to learn more about how to make their children take part in these projects. A lot of conversation starters are also provided to help parents guide their kids and raise kids that are open to giving back. What started out as just a holiday program may become year-round. Kids such as Burnett are always doing amazing things. Another example is Ryder who created an activity on his birthday to raise money to buy presents for kids at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, hoping to help brighten their day. There's also Walt, who raisedover $ 4 000 to donate clothes to some children who aren't able to take their belongings from house to house."We kicked it off for the season, but we think it actually makes a difference," said Rozas. "Because these kids are running projects all year round, and the kinds of projects that are running are not just seasonal, they really are solving basic problems in their communities."(1)For what purpose was Kid Heroes started?A.To guide kids how to be more helpful.B.To celebrate kids making a difference.C.To encourage kids to be heroes.D.To offer kids some inspiration.(2)What can we know about kids according to Raquel Rozas in Paragraph 3?A.They think little of adults' helping other people.B.They hold different attitudes towards good deeds.C.They have prejudice against those people in need.D.They behave better than adults when helping others.(3)What can parents learn from the Parents' Guide?A.They can guide their kids to join interesting activities.B.They can learn how to communicate with their kids.C.They can guide their kids how to do good deeds.D.They can learn how to give back to society.(4)Why are Ryder and Walt mentioned in the text?A.To show that they are actually daily heroes.B.To show the role kids have played in their life.C.To show that the holiday program is year-round.D.To show the influence of the program on kids' life.2. 5G stands for the fifth generation, meaning the next step in the progress of technology to take the place of the present 4G system. 4G took the place of 3G, which came after 2G, and so on. These systems are wireless (无线的) computer networks.Earlier "G" systems were to improve mobile communication operations. Each new technology brought major improvements in speed and greatly increased the network ability. The new 5G system promises more of the same. However, technology experts say there is a major way that 5G is different from the earlier networks. It will move well beyond mobile network technology to influence more industries than other "G" systems.Wireless industry groups say 5G will help build future "smart cities" by connecting sensor (传感器) networks. Such networks will be able to control traffic and quickly find out streetlight problems. 5G is also expected to connect self-driving cars. Higher 5G speeds could also allow doctors to commonly perform long-distance operations. Factories and businesses could use 5G technology to improve the collection of information. However, there are some safety concerns with 5G. More data (数据) —and many more kinds of data—will be traveling across 5G networks. Much of the data could include private information about people, businesses or government organizations. The increased data flow would give Internet attackers (袭击者) a lot more possibilities to steal and misuse data.In addition, the wider use of a 5G wireless network means any breakdown of the network would have more serious results. Such difficulties could influence public safety as well as world business activity. Government network failures could create national safety risks. A failure during a doctor's long-distance operation could lead to the death of a patient. Or a network breakdown could cause terrible accidents of self-driving cars.(1)What are the "G" systems?A.They are wireless industries.B.They are wireless computer networks.C.They are improvements in technology.D.They are generations of computer development.(2)How will 5G change people's life?A.More people will lose their jobs.B.People will cut down the number of cars.C.We can see a doctor without visiting him.D.We can avoid any serious traffic accidents.(3)What problem may 5G bring to us according to the last two paragraphs?A.There are more Internet attackers.B.The network is easy to break down.C.World business activity will be reduced.D.Personal information is at greater risk of being stolen.(4)What is the main idea of the text?A.5G will take the place of 4G.B.5G brings advantages and disadvantages.C.5G pushes the development of technology.D.5G will make industries change completely.3. When I arrived in Sydney two years ago from Brazil to study, I struggled (努力) to find work to support myself.
