专业英语四级-245(总分100,考试时间90分钟)READING COMPREHENSIONSECTION A MULTIPLE-CHOICE QUESTIONSPASSAGE ONEThroughout this long, tense election, everyone has focused on the presidential candidates and how they"ll change America. Rightly so. But selfishly, I"m more fascinated by Michelle Obama and what she might be able to do, not just for this country, but for me as an African-American woman. As the potential First Lady, she would have the world"s attention. And that means that for the first time people will have a chance to get up close and personal with the type of African-American woman they so rarely see.Usually, the lives of black women go largely unexamined. The prevailing theory seems to be that we"re all hot-tempered single mothers who can"t keep a man. Even in the world of make-believe, black women still can"t escape the stereotype of being eye-rolling, oversexed females raised by our never-married, alcoholic mothers. These images have helped define the way all black women are viewed, including Michelle Obama. Before she ever gets the chance to commit to a cause, charity or foundation as First Lady, her most urgent and perhaps **plicated duty may be simply to be herself. It won"t be easy. Because few mainstream publications have done in-depth features on regular African-American women, little is known about who we are, what we think and what we face on a regular basis. For better or worse, Michelle will represent us all.Just as she will have her critics, she will also have millions of fans who usually have little interest in the First Lady. Many African-American blogs have written about what they"d like to see Michelle bring to the White House-mainly showing the world that a black woman can support her man and raise a strong black family. Michelle will have to work to please everyone—an impossible task. But for many African-American women like me, just a little of her poise, confidence and intelligence will go a long way in changing an image that"s been around for far too long.PASSAGE TWOA nine-year-old schoolgirl single-handedly cooks up a science-fair experiment that ends up debunking a widely practiced medical treatment. Emily Rosa"s target was a practice known as therapeutic touch (TT for short), whose advocates manipulate patients" "energy field" to make them feel better and even, say some, to cure them of various ills. Yet Emily"s test shows that these energy fields can"t be detected, even by trained TT practitioners. Obviously mindful of the publicity value of the situation, journal editor George Lundberg appeared on TV to declare, "Agedoesn"t matter. It"s good science that matters, and this is good science."Emily"s mother Linda Rosa, a registered nurse, has been campaigning against TT for nearly a decade. Linda first thought about TT in the late 80s, when she learned it was on the approved list for continuing nursing education in Colorado. Its 100,000 trained practitioners (48,000 in the U.S.) don"t even touch their patients. Instead, they waved their hands a few inches from the patient"s body, pushing energy fields around until they"re in "balance." TT advocates say these manipulations can help heal wounds, relieve pain and reduce fever. The claims are taken seriously enough that TT therapists are frequently hired by leading hospitals, at up to $70 an hour, to smooth patients" energy, sometimes during surgery.Yet Rosa could not find any evidence that it works. To provide such proof, TT therapists would have to sit down for independent testing—something they haven"t been eager to do, even though James Randi has offered more than $1 million to anyone who can demonstrate the existence of a human energy field, (He"s had one taker so far. She failed.) A skeptic might conclude that TT practitioners are afraid to lay their beliefs on the line. But who could turn down an innocent fourth-grader? Says Emily: "I think they didn"t take me very seriously because I"m a kid."The experiment was straightforward: 21 TT therapists stuck their hands, palms up, through a screen. Emily held her own hand over one of theirs—left or right—and the practitioners had to say which hand it was. When the results were recorded, they"d done no better than they would have by simply guessing. If there was an energy field, they couldn"t feel it.PASSAGE THREEI was born in Tuckahoe, Talbot Country, Maryland. I have no accurate knowledge of my age, never having seen any authentic record containing it. By far the larger part of the slaves know as little of their age as horses know of theirs, and it is the wish of most masters within my knowledge to keep their slaves thus ignorant. I do not remember having ever met a slave who could tell of his birthday. They **e nearer to it than planting-time, harvesting, springtime, or falltime.A lack of information concerning my own was a source of unhappiness to me even during childhood. The white children could tell their ages. I could not tell why I ought to be deprived of the same privilege. I was not allowed to make any inquires of my master concerning it. He considered all such inquires on the part of a slave improper and impertinent. The nearest estimate I can give makes me now between twenty-seven and twenty-eight years of age. I come to this, from hearing my master say, some time during 1835, I was about seventeen years old.My mother was named Harriet Bailey. She was the daughter of Isaac and Betsey Bailey, both colored, and quite dark. My mother was of a **plexion than either my grandmother or grandfather. My father was a white man. The opinion was also whispered that my master was my father; but of the correctness of this opinion, I know nothing. The means of knowing was withheld from me. My mother and I were separated when 1 was but an infant—before I knew her as my mother. It is a common custom, in the part of Maryland from which I ran away, to part children from their mothers at a very early age. Frequently, before the child has reached its twelfth month, its mother is taken from it, and hired out on some farm a considerable distance off; and the child is placed under the care of an older woman, too old for field labor. For what this separation is done, I do not know, unless it was to hinder the development of the child"s affection towards its mother. PASSAGE FOURAs many as one thousand years ago in the Southwest, the Hopi and Zuni Indians of North America were building with adobe—sun baked brick plastered with mud. Their homes looked remarkablylike modem apartment houses. Some were four stories high and contained quarters for perhaps a thousand people, along with store rooms for grain and other goods. These buildings were usually put up against cliffs, both to make construction easier and for defense against enemies. They were really villages in themselves, as later Spanish explorers must have realized since they called them "pueblos", which is Spanish for town. The people of the pueblos raised what are called "the three sisters"—corn, beans, and squash. They made excellent pottery and wove marvelous baskets, some so fine that they could hold water. The Southwest has always been a dry country, where water is scarce. The Hopi and Zuni brought water from streams to their fields and gardens through irrigation ditches. Water was so important that it played a major role in their religion. They developed elaborate ceremonies and religious rituals to bring rain. The way of life of less settled groups was simpler and more strongly influenced by nature. Small tribes such as the Shoshone and Ute wandered the dry and mountainous lands between the Rocky Mountains and the Pacific Ocean. They gathered seeds and hunted small animals such as small rabbits and snakes. In the Far North the ancestors of today"s Inuit hunted seals, walruses, and the great whales. They lived right on the frozen seas in shelters called igloos built of blocks of packed snow. When summer came, they fished for salmon and hunted the lordly caribou. The Cheyenne, Pawnee, and Sioux tribes, known as the Plains Indians, lived on the grasslands between the Rocky Mountains and the Mississippi River. They hunted bison, commonly called the buffalo. Its meat was the chief food of these tribes, and its hide was used to make their clothing and covering of their tents and tipis.1. Why didn"t the author know exactly when he was born?(PASSAGE THREE)14. What does the passage mainly discuss?(PASSAGE FOUR)15. According to the passage, what was the most important animal to the Plains Indians?(PASSAGE FOUR)SECTION A MULTIPLE-CHOICE QUESTIONSPASSAGE ONENapoleon Bonaparte"s ambition to control all the area around the Mediterranean sealed him and his French soldiers to Egypt. After losing a naval battle, they were forced to remain there for three years. In 1799, while constructing a fort, a soldier discovered a piece of stele (stone pillar bearing an inscription) known as the Rosetta stone. This famous stone, which would eventually lead to the deciphering of ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics dating to 3100 B.C., was written in three languages:hieroglyphics (picture writing), demotic (a shorthand version of hieroglyphics), and Greek. Scientists discovered that the characters, unlike those in English, could be written from right to left and in other directions as well.Twenty-three years after discovery of the Rosetta stone, Jean Francois Champollion, a French philologist, fluent in several languages, was able to decipher the first word Ptolemy— name of an Egyptian ruler. This name was written inside an oval called a "cartouche". Further investigation revealed that cartouches contained names of important people of that period. Champollion painstakingly continued his search and was able to increase his growing list of known phonetic signs. He and an Englishman, Thomas Young, worked independently of each other to unravel the deeply hidden mysteries of this strange language. Young believed that sound values could be assigned to the symbols, while Champollion insisted that the pictures represented words. PASSAGE TWOThere is a new type of advertisement becoming **mon in newspaper classified columns. It is sometimes placed among "situations vacant", although it doesn"t offer anyone a job, and sometimes it appears among "situations wanted", although it is not placed by someone looking for a job, either. What it does is to offer help in applying for a job. "Contact us before writing your application", or "Make use of our long experience in preparing your curriculum vitae or job history", is how it is usually expressed. The growth and apparent success of such a specialized service is, of course, a reflection on the current high levels of unemployment. It is also an indication of the growing importance of the curriculum vitae (or job history), with the suggestion that it may now qualify as an art form in its own right. There was a time when job seeker simply wrote letters of application. "Just put down your name, address, age and whether you have passed any exams", was about the average level of advice offered to young people applying for their first jobs when they left school. The letter was really just for openers, it was explained and everything else could and should be saved for the interview. And in those days of full employment the technique worked. The letter proved that you could write and were available for work. Your eager face and intelligent replies did the rest. Later, as you moved up the ladder, something slightly more sophisticated was called for. The advice then was to put something in the letter which would distinguish you from the rest. It might be the aggressive approach. "Your search is over. I am the person you are looking for," was a widely used trick that occasionally succeeded. Or it might be some special feature specially designed for the job interview. There is no doubt, however, that it is the increasing number of applicants with university education at all points in the process of engaging staff that has led to the greater importance of the curriculum vitae.PASSAGE THREEA great deal of attention is being paid today to the so-called digital divide—the division of the world into the info (information) rich and the info poor. And that divide does exist today. My wife and I lectured about this looming danger twenty years ago. What was less visible then, however, were the new, positive forces that work against the digital divide. There are reasons to be optimistic. There are technological reasons to hope the digital divide will narrow. As the Internet becomes more and **mercialized, it is in the interest of business to universalize access—after all, the more people online, the more potential customers there are. More and more governments, afraid their countries will be left behind, want to spread Internet access. Within the next decade or two, one totwo billion people on the planet will be netted together. As a result, I now believe the digital divide will narrow rather than widen in the years ahead. And that is very good news because the Internet may well be the most powerful tool **bating world poverty that we"ve ever had.Of course, the use of the Internet isn"t the only way to defeat poverty. And the Internet is not the only tool we have. But it has enormous potential. To take advantage of this tool, some impoverished countries will have to get over their outdated anti-colonial prejudices with respect to foreign investment. Countries that still think foreign investment is an invasion of their sovereignty might well study the history of infrastructure (the basic structural foundations of a society) in the United States. When the United States built its industrials infrastructure, it didn"t have the capital to do so. And that is why America"s Second Wave infrastructure—including roads, harbors, highways, ports and so on—were built with foreign investment. The English, the Germans, the Dutch and the French were investing in Britain"s former colony. They financed them. Immigrant Americans built them.Guess who owns them now? The Americans. I believe the same thing would be tree in places like Brazil or anywhere else for that matter. The more foreign capital you have helping you build your Third Wave infrastructure, which today is an electronic infrastructure, the better off you"re going to be. That doesn"t mean lying down and becoming fooled, or letting foreign corporations run uncontrolled. But it does mean recognizing how important they can be in building the energy and ** infrastructures needed to take full advantage of the Internet.PASSAGE FOURAsk most people how they define the American Dream and chances are they"ll say, "Success." The dream of individual opportunity has been home in America since Europeans discovered a "new world" in the Western Hemisphere. Early immigrants like Hector St. Jean de Crevecoeur praised highly the freedom and opportunity to be found in this new land. His glowing descriptions of a classless society where anyone could attain success through honesty and hard work fired the imaginations of many European readers. InLetters from an American Farmer(1782) he wrote, "We are all excited at the spirit of an industry which is unfettered and unrestrained, because each person works for himself...We have no princes, for whom we toil, starve, and bleed. We are the most perfect society now existing in the world." The promise of a land where "the rewards of a man"s industry follow with equal steps the progress of his labor" drew poor immigrants from Europe and fueled national expansion into the western territories. Our national mythology is full of illustration of the American success story. There"s Benjamin Franklin, the very model of the self-educated, self-made man, who rose from modest origins to become a well-known scientist, philosopher, and statesman. In the nineteenth century, Horatio Alger, a writer of fiction for young boys, became America"s best-selling author with rags-to-riches tales. The notion of success haunts us—we spend million every year reading about the rich and famous, learning how to "make a fortune in real estate with no money down", and "dressing for success". The myth of success has even invaded our personal relationships—today it"s as important to be "successful" in marriage or parenthoods as it is to come out on top in business. But dreams easily turn into nightmares. Every American who hopes to "make it" also knows the fear of failure, because the myth of success inevitably **parison between the haves and the have-nots, the stars and the anonymous crowd. Under pressure of the myth, we become indulged in status symbols: we try to live in the "right" neighborhoods, wear the "right" clothes, and eat the "right" foods. These symbols of distinction assure us and others that we believe strongly in thefundamental equality of all, yet strive as hard as we can to separate ourselves from our fellow citizens.16. But isn't there more to life than laying the foundations for your future 1? This preoccupation with CV-building is linked to the pressure on people in today's society to be conspicuously 2. You have only to turn on the TV to be 3 that a lot of people have achieved far more than you at a younger age. This creates a feeling of urgency to do something extraordinary as quickly as possible—or at least to find a way of 4 yourself as extraordinary. Almost like a business, we are managing our time and 5 to develop a brand that we present to the world. One example is our Facebook page: we constantly sift through pictures and information, deciding what to share and what to leave out. When it comes to our CVs, we are 6having experiences that we can list as "achievements". In today's jobs market, the message is clear: good grades are no longer enough. We need an impressive list of extracurricular activities that distinguish us from all the other smart and motivated students: we need some 7 work-experience; we need to volunteer; we should have done some work for a charity or devoted our time to some impressive hobbies. In short, we need to prove to our future employers that we are unique, and a perfect fit for the job they're 8. A CV doesn't really say anything about the authentic person behind it 9 the entire thing is carefully constructed around the expectations of future employers.

The TEM-4 (Test for English Majors-Band 4) is a standardized examination designed to assess the English proficiency of undergraduate students majoring in English. The listening comprehension section, being a crucial component, often poses a challenge for many candidates. This article aims to provide an in-depth analysis of the TEM-4 listening comprehension section, along with effective preparation strategies.**Listening Comprehension Section Overview**The listening comprehension section of the TEM-4 typically consists of three parts: short conversations, passages, andcompound dictation. Each part requires a different set of skills and strategies.**Short Conversations**These are brief dialogues between two speakers, usually in a casual setting. Candidates are required to answer questions based on the information provided in the conversations. To excel in this section, candidates should focus on understanding the main idea and key details ofeach conversation. They should also practice note-taking skills to quickly jot down important information.**Passages**Passages are longer audio recordings, often with multiple questions related to the content. Candidates need to listen carefully and understand the main ideas, supporting details, and the relationships between different pieces of information. It is essential to practice active listening skills and to develop a good understanding of language structure and vocabulary.**Compound Dictation**In this section, candidates are presented with a passage with some words or phrases missing. They are required to fill in the blanks by listening to the recording and writing down the missing words or phrases. This section tests both listening and writing skills. To prepare for this section, candidates should practice dictation exercises and work on improving their phonetic transcription skills.**Preparation Strategies**Preparing for the TEM-4 listening comprehension section requires a combination of strategies:1. **Regular Practice**: Regular practice with past TEM-4 exam papers and other similar materials is crucial. This helps familiarize candidates with the format and difficulty level of the exam.2. **Improving Vocabulary**: A rich vocabulary is essential for understanding the passages and conversations. Candidates should focus on learning and reviewing new words and expressions regularly.3. **Note-Taking Skills**: Developing effective note-taking skills can help candidates quickly capture key information during the exam. Practicing this skill with sample questions can be beneficial.4. **Active Listening**: Active listening involves focusing on understanding the meaning and context of the audio material, rather than just hearing the words. Candidates should practice actively listening to English materials, such as podcasts, news broadcasts, and movies, to improve their comprehension skills.5. **Time Management**: Managing time effectively during the exam is crucial. Candidates should practice timing themselves when doing mock exams to ensure theyallocate enough time to each section without rushing through the questions. In conclusion, the TEM-4 listening comprehension section requires candidates to have excellent listening, vocabulary, and note-taking skills. By regularly practicing with sample materials, improving their vocabulary, developing active listening skills, and managing their time effectively, candidates can increase their chances of achieving a good score in this section. Remember, consistent practice and dedication are the keys to success in any exam.**英语专业四级考试真题听力深度解析与备考策略** 英语专业四级考试(TEM-4)是针对英语专业本科生的标准化考试,旨在评估学生的英语能力。

During the 1920s, Hemingway became a member of the group Americans living in Paris, which he described in his first important work, The Sun Also Rises. Equally successful was A Farewell To Arms, the study of an American ambulance officer’s disillusionment in the war and his role as a deserter. Hemingway used his experience as a reporter during the Civil War in Spain as the background for his most ambitious novel, For Whom the Bell Tolls. Among his later works, the most outstanding is the short novel The Old Man and The Sea, the story of an old fisherman’s journey, his long and lonely struggle with a fish and the sea, and his victory in defeat. Now Hemingway is the classic symbol of bravery, or strong man.PART II LISTENING COMPREHENSION (20 MIN)Directions: In Sections A, B and C you will hear everything ONCE ONLY. I sailed right through, but you were standing in a long line.W: Yeah. I waited an hour to sign up for a distance-learning course.M: Distance-learning? Never heard of it!W: Well, it’s new this semester. It’s only open to psychology majors. But I bet it’ll catch on elsewhere. It must really help with their schedules, not to mention how it will cut down on traffic.W: You know, last year my department did a survey and they found out that 80 percent of all psychology majors were employed. It was cheaper.W: I don’t have to show my passport or my driving license, do I?M: No, Jane, you only need a letter from your college.W: OK, I’ll ask my teacher for one.M: And then you take everything to the tourist office andask the travel agent.W: Great, next time you go to London, I’ll come, too!M: Great! But what if they tell you you’re going to have a disease for which there’s currently no known cure?M: If I know it’s hereditary then I might think twice before having any children.W: They can take a piece of someone’s hair now and tell you all about that person’s medical life. Now that could be an incredible invasion of someone’s privacy.M: How do you mean?W: Look. So at your job interview they ask you for a piece of hair, ring you up ten days later or whatever and tell you they don’t want to employ you because you’ve got such and such a disease and you might die in five years.M: Don’t be absurd.W: I’m not being absurd.M: Do you think people would let them get away with that, huh? (分数:106.00)__________________________________________________________________________________________ 正确答案:()解析:{{B}}Campus Love{{/B}} Campus love isn't a newly-born phenomenon. Some people are strongly against it while some others think it's natural. I don't advocate it. The reasons are as follows. First of all, undergraduates are neither fully psychologically mature nor able to assume the responsibility, especially freshmen and sophomores. Second, they may indulge in it, thus dilapidate their study, which isn't rare. Third, some just take advantage of it to kill time, avoid boredom with much time at their own disposals and have someone keep company. What's more, some change dating "partners" frequently, holding a paradox opinion that they could show off their charm or accumulate experience? but more often than not, they would leave a bad impression, such as lacking the sense of responsibility, on others, especially their former sweethearts. Finally, the proportion of successful couples is too low. The overwhelming majority reach the same end- parting just before graduation, forced by reality. So, look before you leap', discard campus love and make a wiser decision after graduation.二、{{B}}Part Ⅱ Reading Comprehension (Skimming and Scanning){{/B}}(总题数:10,分数:70.00)2.The main idea of the passage is that how Nightingale combated the obstacles from her family and the society and finally become a nurse.(分数:7.00)填空项1:__________________ (正确答案:N)解析:本题考查的是对文章内容的总体把握。
