Fountain of Youth
Fountain of Youth, for Heart not for AppearanceI have just finished reading Ancient Secret of the Fountain of Youth. At first it sounds quite mysterious and ponderously to me. But the further I go into it, the more puzzled I am towards this book. Before starting reading this book, I have thought that it is a book talking about the harmony between humankind and nature. I think the fountain of youth must be related to the permanent of spirit. However, as far as I’m concerned, the book Ancient Secret of the Fountain of Youth focuses more on the external benefits and charming physical appearance. Here are some statements and ideas I pick out from the book.ⅠAbout the definition of The YouthThe writer says that every man desires to live long but no man would be old at the very beginning of this book. The secret seeker, a man named Colonel Bradford, is troubled with not growing any younger after 40. Then he set out to accomplish his desire of a long-living. And when he has come back, he has been able to look much younger and stronger. He has passed his theory to others who eager to look younger and to be alive forever. And that’s it. That’s it the fountain of youth.Apparently, this Superman connects the Youth with a younger appearnce and more energetic organs. Of course, the Indu yoga also take the harmony of the man and nature, body and spirit quite seriously. We can tell that the fundamental purpose of yoga is to balance the speedand function of the seven vortexes, in other words, the seven energy centers inside the body. However, the whole book gives me the impression that it is preaching the secret of a long life rather than the secret of a contented and high-quality life.In my opinion, youth has little to do with the age and appearance. It is really about one’s attitude. Maybe it do can be achieved by the mysterious yoga. One can get the relief and content through a fully deep breath. One can be cheerful after finishing these difficult movements. These will be the internal benefits yoga brings to a exerciser, or a follower. What is most important is the inner peace.Ⅱ About the method of achieving itIt tries to achieve the miracle of youth by six rites in all. In addition there are also other methods like keeping on a diet on etc.It is said that ‘Most westerners think it is a law of nature that our bodies must grow old and deteriorate. By looking within, the Lamas know this to be a self-fulfilling illusion.’I can never be for this. Bearing and death is the most nature circle of the life and the nature. Maybe one can prolong the life and put off the coming of death, but it can never avoid it. I have been puzzled with one question since I started my reading: Will one die or how will one die if he has accomplished these six rites and become a superman or superwoman? Will he die in a fairly young appearance and with hisenergetic vortexes? For I believe that no mortals can live permanently. So sometimes I found that it does not make sense logically. What surprises me is the sixth rite it recommends. It make people become celibate so that reproductive energy can be re-channeled to a higher use. What seems most ridiculous to me is that the author has called it the ‘Elixir of Life’.I think a man who seeks for the genuine youth of life should not worship anything. There must be no elixir in this universe. And the theory of being celibate itself is against the nature. If it truly functions, why should the Christian abolished it hundreds years ago? Things against the nature cannot bring harmony and peace. And after reading the chapter of the diet, I think I will never live on such a diet even though you provide me with a permanent body.ⅢComparison and Contrast it with the Chinese point of view of youthThe Chinese religion believes in the circle of life. It believes that there is no need to seek for a permanent life. The life is beautiful and meaningful only if it is temporary. Or no one will treasure it. The spirit lives far longer than flesh. One will live forever if he left something beneficial and meaningful. There are also many people dying for the long life in the history. Many emperors in ancient China spend their life for the ‘elixir of life’ butno one succeeds. It tells that one cannot stop the step of growing and dying, even by practicing yoga. But one can walk to his death peacefully and gracefully with content in his heart.A genuine long life in my eye is just not regretting for the things I have done and haven’t when I recall my previous life. One will be youth forever, just not on appearance but inside your heart.。

How can reading fill it to overflowing with adventure, richness, and fullness?Your Pleasure-giving SkillSkills are skills. Pleasures are pleasures. But some skills are lasting pleasures. Such is reading. Listen to Hazilitt-"The greatest pleasure in life is that of reading." Or Macauly- "I would rather be a poor man in a garret with plenty of books than a king who did not love reading." To them and countless others all over the world, reading is a source of the deepest and fullest enjoyment. That's true from early school days to days of leisure and retirement.Your Fountain of YouthReading is more than that. It can be your fountain of youth. Virginia Woolf said, "The true reader is essentially young." One of your major problems is how to stay alive as long as you live. Some die at 30 but are not buried until they're 70. With some, youth slips away before being properly savored. Reading provides a spring of living water, refreshing and life-giving. Stay young for life with reading.Your Dream-fulfillment AidPart of youth lies in dreaming-dreaming impossible dreams that you can sometimes make possible. Robert F. Kennedy said this,"Some men see things as they are and say ‘Why?' I dream things that never were and say ‘Why not?'" Certain books push the boundaries of the human mind out beyond belief. After all, a little bit of greatness hides in everyone. Let books bring it into full bloom.Your Know-thyself AidWhat's your most important quest? Finding yourself. Finding your own identity. The Greeks epitomized that problem in two words: Know thyself. Well, articles and books help in that all important search. They supply assurance of the power and worth of your own life, a measure of your possibilities. To see yourself in proper perspective, you need detailed picture of real people in real situations. We need to see three-dimensional characters, with all the typical human fears and limitations. Then, and only then, can you begin to see and know yourself as you should.Your Vocational Counselor and ConsultantWhat about practical questions, such as those about your vocation? Will reading help you decide more intelligently what to do, how to prepare yourself and how to succeed on the job?To answer the first question, you have to know your own talents, abilities, and interests well. You must also, however, know the opportunities in the world around you. Some Bureau of Labor Statistics, for example, predicted a surplus of approximately two million school teachers. Still another source indicated that right now "the health fields are the only fields in which we have shortages." Balance such information with self-knowledge and you have some of the ingredients needed to make intelligent, perceptive choices.Second, you've decided on a career. How and where do you get the required preparation? Again, turn to reading. You'll probably find a listing of school programs to choose from. You may even find them rated. If so, you'll know exactly where to go for the best possible preparation.Third, don't stop yet. You've selected a career and trained yourself. Learn on reading now to help you succeed on the job. A variety of magazines and books will provide guidance and help. But that's not all. The day of only one lifetime career may be almost over. All too often, change throws hundreds out of work. Change hits the aircraft industry, for example. Result? Hundreds of well-qualified engineers suddenly out on the street. If you manage things well, keeping a close eye on changing conditions. You can avoid the pain of waking up to find yourself out of a job. Through reading develop some new skills and interests. Then if conditions change, you can slip with comparative ease from one field into another, hardly breaking stride. Most of the things taught in school-typing, shorthand, key punching, language, farming, business management-are readily available in interesting self-help articles and books. Let them smooth your path in any new direction you decide to take.Your Experience ExtenderWhat's the best teacher? Experience, of course! It's priceless. It comes from what you yourself have seen, heard, tasted, smelled, and felt - what you yourself have lived through.Take a closer look. Look at our limitations. No wonder experience is so precious. We can't begin to get enough of it. We can't even experience again what we just lived through. We're not born with instant replay. We can't actually relive any moment. And, obviously, we're limited to one lifetime.Space and time! How they limit us. Who has a time machine to carry him back into history? No one. It's the same with space. We can't literally be in two places at the same time. Right now you can't be sitting where you are and at the same time be strolling down the famed Champs Elysees in Paris. Here's where reading fits. It can bring us almost unlimited additional experience. To be sure, it's secondhand experience. But it's often so vivid that it seems firsthand, just as if we're living through it ourselves, being moved to tears, laughter, or suspense. That rich range of experience provides the ideal supplement to our own limited experience. In this way, reading becomes one of our most profound mind-shaping activities.Furthermore, all this experience is available when we want it. Books never impose on us. When we want them, we reach out and pull them off the shelf or table. At our convenience we invite them to share their unbelievable wealth with us.Carlyle sums this all up nicely,"All that mankind has done, thought, gained, or been; it islying as in magic preservation in the pages of books." Help yourself! Make reading your experience-extender for the rest of your life.1. According to the passage, reading is the lasting pleasure.2. Reading provides all the people in the world with a source of deepest and fullest enjoyment.3. Reading is a fountain of youth in that one can always learn something new from books and never cease to be young in spirit.4. The passage explains how books help fulfill your long-cherished dreams.5. To find your own identity simply means6. To make an intelligent decision on what to do, you should have an adequate knowledge of your own .7. According to the author, reading is even after you have selected a career and trained yourself.8. You should develop some new skills and interests with the help of books in order to prepare for .9. Though our experience is limited by , reading can bring us unlimited additional secondhand experience.10. Carlyle calls on people to make reading their for the rest of their life.Part ⅢListening Comprehension(35 minutes)Section ADirections: In this section, you will hear 8 short conversations and 2 long conversations. At the end of each conversation, one or more questions will be asked about what was said. Both the conversation and the questions will be spoken only once. After each question there will be a pause. Soon, that will change. Electronic commerce is growing fast and will soon bring people more choice. There will, however, be a cost:Protecting the consumer from fraud will be harder. Many governments therefore want to extend highstreet regulations to the electronic world. But politicians would be wiser to see cyberspace as a basis for a new era of corporate self-regulation.Consumers in rich countries have grown used to the idea that the government takes responsibility for everything from the stability of the banks to the safety of the drugs, or their rights to refund(退款) when goods are faulty. But governments cannot enforce national laws on businesses whose only presence in their country is on the screen. Other countries have regulators, but the rules of consumer protection differ, as does enforcement. Even where a clear right to compensation exists, the online catalogue customer in Tokyo, say, can hardly go to New York to extract a refund for a dud purchase. One answer is for governments to cooperate more: to recognize each other's rules. But that requires years of work and volumes of detailed rules. And plenty of countries have rules too fanciful for sober states to accept. There is, however, an alternative. Let the electronic businesses do the "regulation" themselves. They do, after all, have a self-interest in doing so.In electronic commerce, a reputation for honest dealing will be a valuable competitive asset. Governments, too, may compete to be trusted. For instance, customers ordering medicines online may prefer to buy from the United States because they trust the rigorous screening of the Food and Drug Administration; or they may decide that the FDA's rules are too strict, and buy from Switzerland instead.Consumers will need to use their judgment. But precisely because the technology is new, electronic shoppers are likely for a while to be a lot more cautious than consumers of the normal sort-and the new technology will also make it easier for them to complain noisily when a company lets them down. In this way, at least, the advent of cyberspace may argue for fewer consumer protection laws, not more.47. What can people benefit from the fast-growing development of electronic commerce?48. When goods are faulty, consumers in rich countries tend to think that it is who takes responsibility for everything.49. In the author's view, why do businesses place a high premium on honest dealing in the electronic world?50. We can infer from the passage that in licensing new drugs the FDA in the United States is .51. We can learn from the passage that are probably more cautious than consumers of thenormal sort when buying things.Section BDirections:There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A),B),C)and D).You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre.Passage OneQuestions 52 to 56 are based on the following passage. Some people say that the study of liberal arts is a useless luxury we can not afford in hard times. Students, they argue, who do not develop salable skills will find it difficult to land a job upon graduation. But there is a problem in speaking of "salable skills". What skills are salable? Right now, skills for making automobiles are not highly salable, but they have been for decades and might be again. Skills are another example of varying salability, as the job market fluctuates. What's more, if one wants to build a curriculum exclusively on what is salable, one will have to make the courses very short and change them very often, in order to keep up with the rapid changes in the job market. But will not the effort be in vain? In very few things can we be sure of future salability, and in a society where people are free to study what they want, and work where they want, and invest as they want, there is no way to keep supply and demand in labor in perfect accord.A school that devotes itself totally to salable skills, especially in a time of high unemployment, sending young men and women into the world armed with only a narrow range of skills, is also sending lambs into the lion's den. If those people gain nothing more from their studies than supposedly salable skills, and can't make the sale because of changes in the job market, they have been cheated. But if those skills were more than salable, if study gave them a better understanding of the world around them and greater adaptability in a changing world, they have not been cheated. They will find some kind of job soon enough. Flexibility, and ability to change and learn new things, is a valuable skill. People who have learned how to learn can learn outside of school. That is where most of us have learned to do what we do, not in school. Learning to learn is one of the highest liberal skills.52. From the passage, we can learn that the author is in favor of .A) teaching practical skills that can be sold in the current job marketB) a flexible curriculum that changes with the timesC) a liberal educationD) keeping a balance between the supply and demand in the labor market53. The word "fluctuate"(Line 5,Para.1) most probably means .A) remain steady B) change in an irregular wayC) follow a set pattern D) become worse and worse54. According to the author, who of the following is more likely to get a job in times of high unemployment?A) A person with the ability to learn by himself.B) A construction worker.C) A car repairman.D) A person with quite a few salable skills.55. According to the author, in developing a curriculum school should .A) predict the salability of skills in the future job marketB) take the current job market into considerationC) consider what skills are salableD) focus on the ability to adapt to changes56. We can learn from the passage that .A) liberal arts education is being challenged nowB) schools that teach practical skills fare better during hard timesC) extracurricular activities are more important than classroom learningD) many students feel cheated by the educational systemPassage TwoQuestions 57 to 61 are based on the following passage.Over the past decade, American companies have tried hard to find ways to discourage senior from feathering their own nests at the expense of their shareholders. The three most popular reforms have been recruiting more outside directors in order to make boards more independent, linking bosses'pay to various performance measures, and giving bosses share options, so that they have the same long-term interests as their shareholders. These reforms have been widely adopted by American's larger companies, and surveys suggest that many more companies are thinking of following their lead. But have they done any good? Three papers presented at the annual meeting of the Academy of Management in Boston this week suggest not. As is usually the case with boardroom tinkering, the consequences have differed from those intended.Start with those independent boards. On the face of it, dismissing the boss's friends from the board and replacing them with outsiders looks a perfect way to make senior managers more accountable. But that is not the conclusion of a study by Professor James Westphal. Instead, he found that bosses with a boardroom full of outsides spend much of their time building alliances, doing personal favors and generally pleasing the outsiders. All too often, these seductions succeed. Mr.Westphal found that, to a remarkable degree, "independent" boards pursue strategies that are likely to favor senior managers rather than shareholders. Such companies diversify their business, increase the pay of executives and weaken the link between pay and performance. To assess the impact of performance related pay, Mr.Westphal asked the bosses of 103 companies with sales of over $1 billion what measurements were used to determine their pay. The measurements varied widely, ranging from sales to earnings per share. But the researcher's big discovery was that bosses attend to measures that affect their own incomes and ignore or play down other factors that affect a company's overall success. In short, bosses are quick to turn every imaginable system of corporate government to their advantage-which is probably why they are the people who are put in charge of things. Here is a paradox for the management theorists: any boss who cannot beat a system designed to keep him under control is probably not worth having.57. What is the purpose of the large companies in recruiting outsiders and putting them on the board of directors?A) To diversify the business of the corporation.B) To enhance the cooperation between the senior managers and the board directors.C) To introduce effective reforms in business management.D) To protect the interests of the shareholders.58. What does Professor James Westphal's study suggest?A) Boardroom reforms have failed to achieve the desired result.B) Outside board directors tend to be more independent.C) With a boardroom full of outsiders, senior managers work more conscientiously.D) Cooperation between senior managers and board directors suffered from the reforms.59. The word "seduction"(Line 1,Para.4) probably means " ".A) efforts to conquerB) attempts to win overC) endeavors to increase profitsD) exertions to understand60. Which of the following statements is true?A) Corporate executives in general are worth the high pay they receive.B) The income of corporate executives is proportional to the growth of corporate profits.C) Corporate executives tend to take advantage of their position to enrich themselves.D) The performance of corporate executives affects their own interests more than those of the shareholders.61. How does the author feel about the efforts to control senior executives?A) Doubtful. B) Optimistic. C) Positive. D) Approving.Directions:This part consists of a short passage. In this passage, there are altogether 10 mistakes, one in each numbered line. You may have to change a word, add a word or delete a word.Mark out the mistakes and put the corrections in the blanks provided. If you change a word, cross it out and write the correct word in the corresponding blank. If you add a word, put an insertion mark(∧)in the right place and write the missing word in the blank. If you delete a word, cross it out and put a slash(/)in the blank.Conflict is a necessary element in fiction. Indeed, it isthe backbone of a story; it is conflict that gives us the senseof a story going somewhere. The conflict in a story must first be obvious importance 62to the characters involved. We can illustrate this byreference to experience. All of us face constant conflicts ourdaily lives-whenever we cross a street, for example, orwhenever the alarm goes off and we have to get up for aclass. Most of our conflicts are easily resolved-we wait fortraffic and then cross the street without fear, or we shut offthe alarm, get up, and after two cups of coffee forget ourpain. Furthermore, we also experience conflicts that are not 63easily resolved. All of us, for example, are faced almostdaily with conflicts which have some kind of a permanenteffect to us-which alter our basic values or our conception 64of human nature. Should we report the fellow student whomwe look cheating on an examination? Should we pad (虚报) 65our accounts for books and supplies in that letter home-particularly since we know that father cheats a little hereand there on his income-tax returns? None of us have 66witnessed teachers or ministers or high public officialspreach one thing and practice other. All of us have found 67ourselves in that most common of all dilemmas-the choicebetween holding to a set of moral and ethical convictionsand violate them in order to be accepted by our group. 68These are the kinds of conflicts which we find fiction; and 69because they are of this nature, we call fictional conflictscrisis situations. We mean by this that as a result of a givenconflict, the character or characters involving will never 70again be quite the same people that they are before the 71incident occurred.Part ⅥTranslation(5 minutes)Directions:Complete the following sentences on Answer Sheet 2 by translating into English the Chinese given in brackets.72. If I had (足够的钱,我会毫不犹豫地买一辆名牌车).73. With tears in her eyes, the mother (看着吸毒成瘾的女儿被带上了警车).74. After the outbreak of the infectious disease, all the citizens (被警告暂时取消任何旅行计划).75. Nowadays, the young people prefer to correspond with each other (通过发电子邮件而不是写信).76. It must be kept in mind that (你只有通过终身学习才能在这个竞争激烈的社会中生存).Part ⅠWritingIs It Appropriate for College Students to Rent Apartments Outside Campus?Nowadays, many university students do not like to live in a dorm in the campus, but choose to rent apartments outside. If we want to know whether it is appropriate to do so, we should analyze its advantages and disadvantages. The advantages of living outside campus are obvious. Students who live outside can enjoy more freedom and have more independence. For senior students, they may also have more opportunities for jobs. But there are also many disadvantages. For instance, they may have less time to know other students, they have to spend time traveling forth and back, their life may be less interesting, and it is obviously more expensive and less safe to live outside.Considering the advantages and disadvantages, I think students should decide according to their own situations. If they want to save money and have more time to study and more contacts with other students, it is better for them to live inside the campus. But if they value freedom and independence more than anything else and do not have to worry about the costs, it is also appropriate for them to rent a room or an apartment outside the campus. Whatever they decide, their decisions should be appropriate for themselves.Part ⅡReading Comprehension (Skimming and Scanning)1. Y本题的判断依据为文章第一个小标题下的第三、四句"But some skills are lasting pleasures. Is there a way to turn back the aging process? For centuries, people have been looking for a “fountain of youth”. The idea is that if you find a magical fountain, and drink from its waters, you will not age.Researchers in New York did not find an actual fountain of youth, but they may have found a way to turn back the aging process. It appears the answer may be hidden right between your eyes, in an area called the hypothalamus (下丘脑). The hypothalamus is part of your brain. It controls important activities within the body.Researchers at New York’s Albert Einstein College of Medicine found that hypothalamus neural (神经的) stem cells also influence how fast aging takes place in the body. What are stem cells(干细胞)? They are simple cells that can develop into specialized cells, like blood or skin cells. Stem cells can also repair damaged tissues and organs.Dongsheng Cai is a professor at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He was the lead researcher in a study on aging in mice. He and his team reported their findings in the journal Nature, Cai explained when hypothalamus function is in decline, particularly the loss of hypothalamus stem cells, and this protection against the aging development is lost. it eventually leads to aging.Using this information, the researchers began trying to activate, or energize, the hypothalamus laboratory mice. They did this by injecting the animals with stem cells, Later, the researchers examined tissues and tested for changes in behavior. They looked for changes in the strength and coordination (协调) of the animals muscles. They also studied the social behavior and cognitive ability of the mice. The researchers say the results show that the treatment slowed aging in the animals, Cai says injecting middle-aged mice with stem cells from younger mice helped the older animals live longer. But these results were just from studying mice in a laboratory. If the mice can live longer, does that mean people could have longer lives? The next step is to see if the anti-aging effects also work in.4. In Paragraph 2 a “fountain of youth” is mentioned to ________.A. introduce the main topicB. show a hidden secret.C. describe scientists researchD. recommend a way to stay young5. Aging takes place in the body when _______.A. stem cells develop into specialized cellsB. there are important activities within the bodyC. hypothalamus neural stem cells fail to protect against agingD. the hypothalamus fails to repair damaged tissues and organs6. What do we know about the researchers at Albert Einstein College of Medicine from the text?A. They did experiments to see how stem cells work.B. They studied mice to find their connection with humans.C. They have found a possible way to slow the aging progress.D. They have found no changes in mice s behavior during the experiment7. What will the researchers probably do next?A. They will help some animals live longer.B. They will announce the fountain of youth doesn’t existC. They will develop products to help people live a longer life immediatelyD. They will do research to see if what they have found in mice will apply to humans.CWilliam had worked hard to pass the exams to enter high school. When the term began, however, his father told him that there was no money to pay for his school fees because of the summer drought. Still, William wanted to learn. He made the village library his school. One day, he found a book calledUsing Energy. On the book’s cover was a picture of windmills, tall steel towers with blades (叶片) spinning like giant fans. He learned that wind—something of which his hometown had plenty—could produce electricity. He couldn’t help picturing his own windmill in mind, but collecting the parts and tools he needed would take months. In a junkyard, he dug through piles of used metal, old cars, and worn-out tractors, searching for anything that might help him construct his machine. He made four-foot-long blades from plastic pipe, which he melted overa fire, flattened out, and hardened with bamboo poles.Earning some money, he paid a blacksmith to attach the piston (活塞) to the pedal sprocket (踏板链轮) of an old bicycle frame. This would be the axle (轮轴) of the windmill. When the wind blew, the spinning blades would turn the bicycle wheel and spin a small dynamo (发电机), donated by his friend. When he had collected all the parts, William began putting them together. He fixed the blades to the tractor fan he found, using washers (垫圈) he’d made from bottle caps. Next he pushed the fan onto the piston joint to the bicycle frame. With the help of his two best friends, Williambuilt a 16-foot-tall tower from trunks of trees and lifted the ninety-pound windmill to the top.The big moments eventually came. He climbed up the tower and connected two wires that held a small bulb. As the wind whipped around him, the blades began to turn, slowly at first, then faster and faster. The light bulb flickered (闪烁), then flashed to life. The crowd cheered from below. “Wachitabwina (well done)!”William’s machine now powered his house. And the story of the boy who’d built a power-generating windmill to rescue his family from the drought spread across the Internet.8. After readingUsing Energy, what did William decide to do?A. Make use of wind.B. Enter a high school.C. Build a village library.D. Learn to survive a drought.9. According to Para.3, which of the following word can best describe William?A. Humorous.B. Determined.C. Cooperative.D. Friendly.10. What can you learn about William’s machine?A. It was built by villagers.B. It worked at the first attempt.C. It took him years to complete it.D. It was made from metal materials.11. What is the besttitle for the passage?A. Winds Of HopeB. Ideas Worth SpreadingC. Learning from ExperienceD. Windmills for VillagesDAdvertisers tend to think big and perhaps this is why they're always coming in for criticism. Their critics(批评家)seem to hate them because they have so much money to throw around. Why don’t they stop advertising andreduce the price of their goods? After all, it’s the consumer who pays. The poor old consumer! He'd have to pay a great deal more if advertising didn't create mass markets for products. It is precisely because of the heavy advertising that consumer goods are so cheap. But we get the wrong idea if we think the only purpose of advertising is to sell goods. Another equally important function is to inform. A great deal of the knowledge we have about household goods is largely from the advertisements we read. Advertisements introduce us to new products or remind us of the existence of ones we already know about. Supposing you wanted to buy a washing machine, it is more than likely you would obtain details regarding performance, price, etc., from an advertisement.Lots of people pretend that they never read advertisements, but this claim may be seriously doubted. It is hardly possible not to read advertisements these days. And what fun they often are, too! Just think what a railway station or a newspaper would be like without advertisements. Would you enjoy gazing at a blank wall or reading railway byelaws while waiting for a train? A cheerful, witty advertisement makes such a difference to a dull wall or a newspaper full of the incidents and disasters. We must not forget, either, that advertising makes a positive contribution to our pockets. The fact that we pay so little for our daily paper, or can enjoy so many broadcast programmers is due entirely to the money spent by advertisers. Just think what a newspaper would cost if we had to pay its full price!Another thing we mustn't forget is the “small ads.” What a tremendously useful service they perform for the community! Just about anything can be accomplished through these columns. For instance, you can find a job, buy or sell a house, announce a birth, marriage or death in what used to be called the “hatch, match and dispatch” column(栏目) but by far the most fascinating section is the personal or “agony” column. No other item in a newspaper provides such entertaining reading or offers such a deep insight into human nature. It's the best advertisement for advertising there is!12. What is the main idea of this passage?A. Advertisements steal money from our pocketsB. The critics get the wrong idea of advertisements.C. Advertisers perform a useful service to communities.D. Advertisements are everywhere.13. What is the attitude of the author toward advertisements?A. He appreciates the role of advertisements.B. He doubts the effect of advertisements.C. He believes what is said in advertisements.D. He complains too many advertisements in daily life.14. Which of the following is Not True?A. The personal or “agony” column makes us know more about human nature.B. The only purpose of advertising is to sell goods.C. A newspaper will cost us more if there is no advertisement on it.D. Advertisement makes our life color1 ful.15. Whicof the following shows the structure of the passage?( ①=" Paragraph" 1, ②=" paragraph" 2, ③=" paragraph" 3, ④=" paragraph" 4 ⑤=" paragraph" 5)A B.C. 2023大学英语六级阅读理解完形填空测试题
2023大学英语六级阅读理解完形填空测试题The Look Younger DietIs the Fountain of Youth a myth? Not entirely, many experts in nutrition now believe, Age fast, or age slow—its up to you. declares Dr. Kenneth Cooper, president and founder of the Aerobics Center in Dallas. Jeffrey Blumberg, associate director of the U. S. Department of Agricultures Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University in Boston, agrees, Research shows that many so-called age-related declines in physiological function seem to have less to do with aging than with environmental factors like diet and exercise.Obesity (过度肥胖) is one of the leading causes of accelerated aging, according to Cooper, If you lose weight, stop smoking, and exercise, he says, you can slow the aging process—and make dramatic changes in your looks in a relatively short period of time.A 37-year-old sales director for a Boston computer-distribution company is a prime example. Over six feet tall, he had been considerably overweight most of his like. Then he began to worry that his appearance could be hurting his career. I got tired of people thinking I was the same age as my brother, whos nearly nine years older, he says, When youre fat, people in the business world assume youre out of control.Determined to change, the sales director entered a hospital-based diet program and dropped over 70 pounds. I feel—and look—ten years younger. he says.At 82, Clarice R. Mc Williams, a retired business owner in Dallas, has the appearance, skin tone (肤色) and mental agility of someone many years younger. Most people think Im in my 60s. she boasts.Mc Williams admits genes play some role in the way she looks, but believes diet is an important factor. It doesnt matter how good the genes are if you dont eat properly and take care of yourself, she says. If you want to look good, get plenty of rest, exercise every day, eat mostly raw fruits and vegetables—and quit worrying.Says Blumberg, Theres certainly a link between good nutrition, a positive attitude and improved quality of life. People can have a say in whats going on with their bodies by selecting a healthful diet.Skin. Nowhere do the signs of aging manifest themselves more clearly than in the condition of the skin. When your weight fluctuates, the skin stretches with each up cycle, but it may not completely shrink back to its original size in the down cycle. As a result, the skin may sag(松弛下垂).A severely deficient diet can lead to skin disorders, dramatically affecting ones appearance. By the same token, a well-balanced diet with ample supplies of nutrients is thought by many experts to produce a glowing, younger look.Zinc and vitamin A are important for normal, healthy skin. Zinc helps the skin repair itself, and vitamin A aids in keeping skin supple, preventing dryness and helping shed dead cells. Good sources of zinc are beef, eggs and seafood, while many dark-green leafy vegetables are rich in beta carotene, which the body converts to vitamin A. Other foods containing ample amounts of beta carotene include carrots, cantaloupe, winter squash, sweet potatoes, sweet red peppers, apricots and mangoes.Vitamin C helps improve the blood supply to the skin and aids in forming collagen(胶原) , the fibrous protein that lies beneath the skins surface and gives it a smooth appearance. Good sources of vitamin C include citrus fruits and juices, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, snow peas, redand green peppers, broccoli, white and sweet potatoes, tomatoes, watermelon, honeydew melon and cantaloupe.Greens are excellent sources of skin-preserving nutrients and, generally, the darker the leaves, the more nutritious. Romaine lettuce, for example has about six times as much vitamin C and eight times as much beta carotene as iceberg lettuce. How food is prepared matters too. The longer vegetables cook, the greater the loss of vitamins and texture. Dont soak vegetables when washing them, since water-soluble vitamins such as C will be lost.Blumberg also recommends drinking six to eight glasses of water or other fluids each day to help keep skin and other tissues hydrated. Thats especially important for older people, he says, who are at risk for dehydration because their thirst drive becomes blunted with age. Coffee, colas and tea arent the best sources, since they contain caffeine, a diuretic that induces water loss.Hair. Healthy, shining hair is second only to vibrant skin for making one look younger. Yet many people unwittingly mistreat their hair by eating an unbalanced diet. When a 33-year-old employee at a Texas corporation decided to lose weight quickly, she went on a fad diet, high in fiber and bulk, but low in protein. Over three months, she lost a lot of weight. She also lost a good deal of her hair.Dermatologist (皮肤病学家) David Alkek, a clinical professor at the University of Texas Southwest Medical Center at Dallas, sees too many cases like this womans. When diets dont contain enough amino acids, the building blocks of protein, theres dramatic increase in hair loss as the body breaks down its own protein.Hair and skin cells are constantly reproducing and are, therefore, very sensitive to nutritional deficiencies, explains Dr. Alkek. Foods high in amino acids include meats, eggs, milk, grains and legumes. Just remember that the body cannot store protein. So foods high in protein must be ingested daily. Under Alkeks care, the woman began eating nutritionally balanced meals, and her hair was restored in about eight months.Immune system. Vitamins E and C and beta carotene, known as antioxidants (抗氧化剂) , are considered powerful disease-fighters, capable of slowing down or preventing a number of ailments typically associated with aging.A growing body of evidence suggests that aging and decline in immune function may result in part from accumulated damage to cells caused by certain toxic compounds called free radicals (自由基). Antioxidants seem to counteract or impair the ability of these substances to attack healthy cells, thus avoiding at least some of the damage. Foods containing these nutrients are being linked—by science rather than myth—to the control and prevention of heart disease and cancer, stroke, cataracts and to the bodys ability to ward off infectious diseases.Good general nutrition is essential to maintaining a healthy, youthful appearance. And the key to good general nutrition is balance. Proteins should make up roughly ten percent of your daily calorie intake; no more than 30 percent should come from fats; and the remaining calories should come mostly from complex carbohydrates.1. The passage primarily tells us how to lose weight so as to improve ones appearance.2. Dark-green leafy vegetables are good sources of beta carotene.3. When one gains weight, the skin becomes loose.4. It is particularly important for the old to drink 6 to 8 glasses of water to help keep skin andother tissues hydrated.5. Food low in protein is harmful to hair.6. Free radicals play an important role in immune function.7. In order to look younger, one should cut back on fats.8. Amino acids are the building blocks of______.9. Genes are______than diet in determining ones looks.10. The body changes______into vitamin A.参考答案:1. N2. Y3. N4. Y5. Y6. N7. NG8. protein9. less important 10. beta carotene。
饮酒与健康(英文论文材料)
Wine and Health... benefits are not without cautions ...The medical profession has recognized the healthful and nutritive properties of wine for thousands of years. Recent archeological evidence shows wine was in use as a pharmaceutical as early as 3,150 B.C.1 Hippocrates recommended specific wines to purge fever, disinfect and dress wounds, as diuretics, or for nutritional supplements, around 450 B.C. A French doctor wrote the earliest known printed book about wine in 1410 A.D.Most of the pathogens that threaten humans are inhibited or killed off by the acids and alcohols in wine. Because of this, wine was considered to be a safer drink than much of the available water up until the 18th century.Wine is a mild natural tranquilizer, serving to reduce anxiety and tension. As part of a normal diet, wine provides the body with energy, with substances that aid digestion, and with small amounts of minerals and vitamins. It can also stimulate the appetite. In addition, wine serves to restore nutritional balance, relieve tension, sedate and act as a mild euphoric agent to the convalescent and especially the aged.POLITICAL SUPPRESSIONAlthough wine may be the oldest remedy and prophylactic still in use, there was an entire generation of medical professionals, especially in America, that obtained their medical education during the historical period known as Prohibition. Medical texts for nearly twenty-five years were purged and censored of any mention of alcohol, including wine, for any application other than external. This medical generation became educators to the following one, perpetuating medical ignorance of the potential health benefits of wine.In the 1970s, the National Institute of Health excluded and suppressed evidence from the Framingham Heart Study that showed moderate drinkers had 50 per cent fewer deaths from coronary disease than non-drinkers.FRENCH PARADOXOnly when the television news magazine "60 Minutes" reported in November, 1991, the phenomenon that has come to be known as the French Paradox did popular thinking of wine as medicine rather than toxin begin to return. Typically, the diet of people in Southern France includes a very high proportion of cheese, butter, eggs, organ meats, and other fatty and cholesterol-laden foods. This diet would seem to promote heart disease, but the rate there was discovered to be much lower than in America; herein lies the paradox.REGULARITY & MODERATIONRegular moderate wine drinking was discovered to be the one consistency. Studies in England and Denmark found the occurrence of coronary NOTE: Any claim that one particular wine type, or region, or extract, hasdisease to be much higher in heavy or binge drinkers and (surprise!) even higher in abstainers. It is very important to note that Europeans generally drink wine and water with their meals, while Americans drink milk, iced tea, soft drinks, or coffee. (See "R X for Society: Wine and Water")higher health orlife-prolonging benefits is entirely BOGUS, FALSE, and intended to promote commercial sales and profit, and not to benefit public health.ANTI-CANCER & CORONARY BENEFITSModerate consumption of red wine on a regular basis may be a preventative against coronary disease and some forms of cancer. The chemical components thought to be responsible are catechins, also known as flavonoids and related to tannins . Catechins are believed to function as anti-oxidants, preventing molecules known as "free-radicals" from doing cellular damage. One particular form of flavonoid, called oligomeric procyanidin, recently proved to prevent hardening of the arteries. There are also compounds in grapes and wine (especially red wine, grape juice, dark beers and tea, but absent in white wine, light beers and spirits) called resveratrol and quercetin. Clinical and statistical evidence and laboratory studies have shown these may boost the immune system, block cancer formation, and possibly protect against heart disease and even prolong life. One recent study, published in the 2004 year-end edition of the American Journal of Physiology, indicates that resveratrol also inhibits formation of a protein that produces a condition called cardio fibrosis, which reduces the heart's pumping efficiency when it is needed most, at times of stress. More evidence suggests that wine dilates the small blood vessels and helps to prevent angina and clotting. The alcohol in wine additionally helps balance cholesterol towards the good type.Research is ongoing and it is a mistake for anyone to radically change their consumption pattern based on preliminary data. A study of obese mice showed that doses of resveratrol prolonged their life spans, but for a human to duplicate this prescription using wine, he would to drink over 250 gallons per day!2FOUNTAIN of YOUTH?A Harvard study of factors that influence aging, as reported in the May 8, 2003, issue of the journal Nature, has shown that resveratrol extends the life span of yeast cells by 80%. Preliminary results of tests on multi cellular animals are said to be encouraging; study coauthor David Sinclair told Reuters News Agency that "Not many people know about it yet, but those who do have almost invariably changed their drinking habits, that is, they drink more red wine."Wine might even preserve cognitive function in the elderly. Several European studies have shown the prophylactic effects of regular light to moderate alcoholconsumption may include the prevention or postponement of Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and other forms of dementia. Could wine be the original brain food?DIGESTIVE PROPHYLAXISA study published in January, 2003, in the American Journal of Gastroenterology showed that moderate, regular consumption of wine or beer decreases the risk of peptic ulcers and may help to rid the body of the bacteria suspected of causing them. Interestingly, both over-consumption, especially of beer, and any regular consumption of spirits at all, even at a low level, seemed to increase the ulcer risks. The Harvard School of Public Health conducted a 14-year study of over 100,000 women, aged 25 to 42, from 14 states. The Nurses Health Study required participants to complete a questionnaire every two years, detailing lifestyle choices and diagnoses of any medical conditions. The subjects were categorized into three levels of alcohol consumption. After factoring in such variables as family histories of diabetes and smoking habits, the study found that women who drank regularly and moderately (one or two drinks per day, a total of 15 to 30 grams of alcohol) had a 58% lower likelihood of developing diabetes. Both those levels that drank more or that drank less had a 20% lower risk than either abstainers or former drinkers. When preferences for types of alcohol were compared, those who chose beer and wine shared similar levels of risk, but those in who drank spirits and consumed more than 30 grams per day had a 150% higher risk to develop diabetes than evennon-drinkers.Other medical studies point to multiple benefits of regular moderate wine drinking that may include lowered risks of stroke, colorectal tumors, skin and other types of cancers, senile dementia, and even the common cold, as well as reduce the effects of scarring from radiation treatments.SUMMARY / BOTTOM LINEin large populations, have concluded that most healthypeople who drink wine regularly and moderately livelonger. The single group exception, whose membersshould not consume any alcohol, is pre-menopausalwomen with a family history of breast cancer. The keys to the beneficial aspects of wine drinking are regularity and moderation. The importance of this pattern of consumption cannot be over-emphasized. An occasional serving of wine is better than none, but overindulgence can be considerably more harmful than total abstinence.NUTRITIONThe nutritional content of wine is minimal. There is no fat, cholesterol, or dietary fiber in any wine. On the other hand, only with overindulgence would anyone reach their Minimum Daily Requirement for calories, carbohydrates, sodium, protein, vitamins or minerals, all of which all wines contain to some mostly insignificant degree. This is a rather weak and passive permission, rather than the ringing endorsement moderate wine consumption deserves, according to the vast majority of medical and scientific evidence. It is, however, a progressive leap from the 1990 Guidelines, which said, "wine has no net health benefit", which is the contemporary scientific equivalent of saying "the earth is flat". (see Wine Politics)CAUTIONSOn the other hand, wine is not a cure-all and not everyone should drink wine. There are also circumstances when no one should drink any alcohol. When combined with certain over-the-counter or prescription drugs, for example, alcohol in any form can produce an adverse reaction (see the 5th paragraph under "Headaches" below). Wine should not be given to people with inflammations of the digestive tract, peptic ulcers, liver disease, pancreatitis, kidney or urinary infections, prostate disorders, epilepsy, or alcoholism. As previously mentioned, pre-menopausal women with a family history of breast cancer should abstain from drinking any alcohol, including wine.Sulfites exist in nature and are also naturally contained in or even added to preserve a very long list of many common foods, including wine, cheese, yogurt and other processed dairy, bread and baked goods, tortillas, dried fruits, dried spices, shellfish, dried seafood, canned, bottled, or frozen fruits and juices, jams and jellies, tofu and other soy protein products, packaged pasta or rice mixes, etc.. The human body actually produces about 1 gram of sulfites daily through normal metabolism.About 1% of the general population and about 5% of asthma sufferers may react to sulfites. Symptoms commonly include restricted breathing ability to varying degrees from mild to severe, even life-threatening, especially in asthmatics prescribed to steroids. Skin rashes, hives, itching and nausea are relatively rare symptoms for sulfite allergy. Reactions depend on both the sensitivity of the individual and the level of sulfites ingested. Headaches are not a symptom of sulfite reaction, although this is a common folk tale (see next section).Foods may legally contain sulfites at levels ranging from 6 to 6,000 parts per million. The legal maximum for wine is 350 ppm, but the average content in premium wine is under 40 ppm. White wines are generally higher in sulfites than red wines. Inexpensive wines generally have higher sulfur content than expensive wines. There are no wines that are entirely sulfite-free, even those labeled "organic".The best advice is to waste no time thinking about sulfites, unless your personal physician has warned you against them. For a more complete discussion, visit our article on Understanding Wine Labels.Headaches, affecting some people (estimated to be less than 1% of the human population) during or after consuming wine, may result from individual reactions to one or more of wines' natural compounds. Although clinical trials have produced inconsistent results, red wine is suspected by some sufferers to trigger migraine headaches. Some clinical evidence has shown that phenolic flavonoids (the same ones that provide anti-oxidant benefits), a component in grape skins related to tannins, to be the most probable culprits. Red wine has a much higher content than white wine of both tannins and flavonoidsIn September, 2006, UC Davis Professor David Mills announced his research in the field of genetic mapping indicates that slightly modified amino acids in red wine are responsible for the headaches. Professor Mills says slight changes in fermentation techniques will be able to solve the problem.Scientist Dr. Giuseppe Palmisano, doing post-doctoral research in 2010, at the University of Southern Denmark, discovered some common chemistry shared by wine and known allergens. Dr. Palmisano's main interest is studying glycosylation (the formation of compounds bonding carbohydrates to protein) both in allergenics and in metastatic progressions. He developed a sensitive, resilient, and fairly simple test procedure to identify glycoproteins, in order to measure the quantity of cells affected and their level of transformation. Knowing glycosylation also occurs in wine, he tested a Chardonnay and identified 28 separate grape glycoproteins, many sharing great similarity to previously identified allergens present in bananas, kiwis, latex, and tomatoes. Further testing is needed to test the potential human reactions to these compounds. This could ultimately lead to changes in viticulture practices or wine production methods that would render wines less likely to cause allergic reactions.Chemicals called amines either dilate (histamines) or constrict (tyramines) blood vessels in the brain, either of which may cause headaches in a small segment of the population. Aged and fermented foods such as cheese, sauerkraut, salami, and sourdough bread are high in histamines. Although both red and white wines contain histamines, reds generally have higher content, especially low-acid reds made from grapes grown in warmer areas. Chocolate, vanilla, beans, nuts, bananas, cultured products like cheese and yogurt and fermented products, especially dark beer, soy sauce and red wine are all significant sources of tyramines. Taking antihistamine drugs, either before or after consuming, won't prevent or cure headaches. The use of either aspirin or acetaminophen (the active ingredient in Tylenol) either before of after alcohol consumption can seriously damage the lining of the stomach and should be avoided. The combination of acetaminophen and ethanol causes liver damage, so the former should never be used to treat hangover symptoms. The only way to prevent a hangover is to avoid consuming too much alcohol. One good habit to develop is to match every glass of wine or drink with one full glass of water. Alcohol depletes electrolytes from the body and brain, so "sports" drinks can help also. The worst possible hangover "cure" is "hair of the dog", since hangover is merely the winky-winky, socially-tolerant slang term to describe episodic alcoholism withdrawal.Overindulgence is potentially the worst health problem of consuming wine or any alcoholic beverage. Drinking too much ethanol at one time will cause headaches, nausea, and other symptoms for anyone, regardless of individual tolerance to other compounds in wine. Drinking too much or too fast leads to loss of control and judgment. A couple of glasses of wine may help relaxation and lower blood pressure, but four or more raises blood pressure to a level of concern.Alcohol enters the bloodstream while it passes from the stomach to the small intestine and continues to the liver which uses an enzyme called dehydrogenase to break down and eliminate alcohol from the body. Evidence suggests factors of body size, muscle mass, food intake, gender, and experience affect one's capacity to resist drunkenness to some degree. On average, a healthy human can metabolize one-half ounce of alcohol per hour. The best rule is to not consume more than one drink (4 ounces of table wine) per hour, regardless of size, sex, or a full stomach.Practiced in moderation and consumed with food at mealtime, wine drinking may develop cultural and sociological patterns that actually help to prevent alcoholism. The vast majority of healthy people may enjoy wine regularly and moderately as a pleasure that supports and prolongs a gracious life.。

Ancient Secret of the Fountain of__ Youth
Ancient Secretof theFountain of Youth.Part OneEvery man desires to live long;but no man would be old.Jonathan Swift.O ne afternoon some years ago, I was sitting in the park reading the afternoon paper, when an elderlygentleman walked up and seated himself alongside me. Appearing to be in his late sixties, hewas grey andbalding, his shoulders drooped and he leaned on a cane as he walked. Little did I know thatfrom that moment, the whole course of my life would change forever.I t wasn't long before the two of us were engaged in a fascinating conversation. It turnedout that the old manwas a retired British Army Officer, who had also served in the diplomatic corps for the Crown. As a result, hehad travelled at one time or another to virtually every corner of the globe. And ColonelBradford as I shall callhim-though it is not his real name-held me spellbound with highly entertaining stories of hisadventures. When we parted, we agreed to meet again, and before long, a close friendship haddeveloped between us.Frequently, we got together at his place or mine for discussions and conversation that lastedlate into the night. On one of these occasions, it became clear to me that there was something of importancethat ColonelBradford wanted to talk about, but for some reason he was reluctant to do so. I attempted totactfully put himat ease, assuring him that if he wanted to tell me what was on his mind, I would keep it in strictconfidence.Slowly at first, and then with increasing trust, he began to talk. While stationed in India some years ago, Colonel Bradford had from time to time comeinto contact withwandering natives from the remote regions of the interior, and he had heard some fascinatingstories of theirlife and customs. One strange tale that particularly caught his interest was repeated quite anumber of times, andalways by the natives of a particular district. Those from other districts seemed never to haveheard of it.It concerned a group of Lamas, or Tibetan priests who, according to the story, knew thesecret of the"Fountain of Youth." For thousands of years this extraordinary secret had been handed downby members ofthis particular sect. And while they made no effort to conceal it, their monastery was so remoteand isolated, theywere virtually cut off from the outside world. This monastery and it's "Fountain of Youth" had become something of a legend to thenatives who spoke of it.They told stories of old men who mysteriously regained health, strength, and vigour afterfinding and entering themonastery. But no one seemed to know the exact location of this strange and marvelousplace.Like so many other men, Colonel Bradford had become old at the age of 40, and sincethen had not beengrowing any younger. The more he heard of this miraculous "Fountain of Youth," the more hebecameconvinced that such a place actually existed. He began to gather information on directions, thecharacter of thecountry, the climate, and other data that might help him locate the spot. And once hisinvestigation had begun, the Colonel became increasingly obsessed with a desire to find this "Fountain of Youth."The desire, he told me, had become so irresistable, he had decided to return to India andearnestly searchfor this retreat and it's secret of lasting youth. And Colonel Bradford asked me if I would joinhim in the search.Normally, I would be the first to be sceptical of such an unlikely story. But the Colonelwas completelysincere. And the more he told me of this "Fountain of Youth," the more I became convincedthat it could betrue. For a while, I was tempted to join the Colonel's search. But as I began to take practicalmatters intoconsideration, I finally sided with reason and decided against it.As soon as Colonel Bradford had left, I began to doubt whether I had made the rightdecision. To reassuremyself, I reasoned that perhaps it is a mistake to want to conquer aging. Perhaps we should allsimply resignourselves to growing old gracefully, and not ask more from life than others expect.Yet in the back of my mind the haunting possibility remained: a "Fountain of Youth."What a thrilling idea! For his sake, I hoped that the Colonel might find it.Y ears passed, and in the press of everyday affairs Colonel Bradford and his "Shangri-La"grew dim in mymemory. Then one evening on returning to my apartment, I found a letter in the Colonel'sown handwriting. Iquickly opened and read a message that appeared to have been written in joyous desperation. The Colonelsaid that in spite of frustrating delays and setbacks, he believed that he was actually on the vergeof finding the"Fountain of Youth." He gave no return address, but I was relieved to at least know that theColonel was stillalive. Many more months passed before I heard from him again. When a second letter finallyarrived, my handsalmost trembled as I opened it. For a moment I couldn't believe it's contents. The news wasbetter than I couldpossibly have hoped. Not only had the Colonel found the "Fountain of Youth," he was bringingit back to thestates with him, and would arrive sometime in the next two months.Four years had elapsed since I had last seen my old friend. And I began to wonder howhe might havechanged in that period of time. Had this "Fountain of Youth" enabled him to stop the clock onadvancing age?Would he look as he did when I last saw him, or would he appear to be only one year olderinstead of four?Eventually the opportunity to answer these questions arrived. While I was at home aloneone evening, thehouse phone rang unexpectedly. When I answered, the doorman announced. "ColonelBradford is here to seeyou." A rush of excitement came over me as I said, "Send him right up." Shortly, the bell rangand I threw openthe door. But to my disappointment I saw before me not Colonel Bradford, but another muchyounger man.Noting my surprise, the stranger said, "Weren't you expecting me?" "I thought it would besomeone else," Ianswered a little puzzled and confused."I thought I would be receiving a more enthusiastic welcome," said the visitor in a friendlyvoice. "Lookclosely at my face. Do I need to introduce myself?"Confusion turned to bewilderment, and then amazed disbelief as I stared at the figurebefore me. Slowly, Irealized that the features of his face did indeed resemble those of Colonel Bradford. But thisman looked asthe Colonel might have looked years ago in the prime of his life. Instead of a stooping, sallowold man with acane, I saw a tall, straight figure. His face was robust, and he had a thick growth of dark hairwith scarcely atrace of grey."It is indeed I," said the Colonel, "and if you don't ask me inside, I'll think your mannersbadly lacking."In joyous relief I embraced the Colonel, and unable to contain my excitement, I usheredhim in under abarrage of questions."Wait, wait," he protested good naturedly. "Allow yourself to catch your breath, and I'll tellyou everythingthat's happened." And this he proceeded to do.A s soon as he arrived in India, the Colonel started directly for the district where the fabled"Fountain ofYouth" allegedly existed. Fortunately, he knew quite a bit of the native language, and he spentmany monthsestablishing contacts and befriending people. Then he spent many months more puttingtogether the pieces ofthe puzzle. It was a long, slow process, but persistence finally won him the coveted prize. Aftera long andperilous expedition into the remote reaches of the Himalayas, he finally found the monasterywhich, accordingto legend, held the secret of lasting youth and rejuvenation.I only wish that time and space permitted me to record all of the things that ColonelBradford experiencedafter being admitted to the monastery. Perhaps it is better that I do not, for much of it soundsmore likefantasy than fact. The interesting practices of the lamas, their culture, and their utterindifference to the outsideworld are hard for Western man to grasp and understand. In the monastery, older men and women were nowhere to be seen. The Lamas, goodnaturedly referred tothe Colonel as "The Ancient One," for it had been a very long time since they had seen anyonewho looked asold as he. To them he was a most novel sight."For the first two weeks after I arrived," said the Colonel, "I was like a fish out of water. Imarvelled ateverything I saw, and at times could hardly believe what was before my eyes. Soon, my healthbegan toimprove. I was able to sleep soundly at night, and every morning I awoke feeling more andmore refreshedand energetic. Before long, I found that I needed my cane only when hiking in themountains."One morning after I arrived, I got the biggest surprise of my life. I had entered for thefirst time a large wellordered room in the monastery, one that was used as a kind of library for ancient manuscripts. At one end ofthe room was a full-length mirror. Because I had travelled for the past two years in this remoteand primitiveregion, I had not in all that time seen my reflection in a mirror. So, with some curiosity Istepped before theglass."I stared at the image in front of me with disbelief. My physical appearance had changedso dramaticallythat I looked fully 15 years younger than my age. For so many years I had dared hope that'Fountain of Youth'might truly exist. Now, before my very eyes was physical proof of it's reality."Words cannot describe the joy and elation which I felt. In the weeks and months ahead,my appearancecontinued to improve, and the change became increasingly apparent to all who knew me.Before long, myhonorary title, 'The Ancient One,' was heard no more."At this point the Colonel was interrupted by a knock at the door. I opened it to admit acouple who, thoughthey were good friends of mine, had picked this inopportune moment to visit. Concealingmy disappointmentas best I could, I introduced them to the Colonel, and we all chatted together for a while. Then the Colonelrose and said, "I am sorry that I must leave so early, but I have another commitment thisevening. I hope I shallsee all of you again soon." But at the door he turned to me, and said softly, "Could you havelunch with metomorrow? I promise, if you do, you'll hear all about 'Fountain of Youth,'"We agreed to a time and place, and the Colonel departed. As I returned to my friends, one of themremarked, "He certainly is a fascinating man, but he looks awfully young to be retired fromarmy service.""How old do you think he is?" I asked."Well he doesn't look forty," answered my guest, "but from the conversation I wouldgather he's at least that old.""Yes, at least," I said evasively. And then I steered the conversation to another topic. Iwasn't about to repeatthe Colonel's incredible story, at least not until he had fully explained everything. The next day, after having lunch together, the Colonel and I went up to his room in anearby hotel. Andthere at last he told me full details on "The Fountain of Youth.""T he first important thing I was taught after entering the monastery," said the Colonel, "wasthis: the bodyhas seven energy centres which in English could be called vortexes. The Hindus call themchakras. They arepowerful electrical fields, invisible to the eye, but quite real nonetheless. Each of these sevenvortexes centreson one of the seven ductless glands in the body's endocrine system, and it functions instimulating the gland'shormonal output. It is these hormones which regulate all of the body's functions, including theprocess of aging."The lowest, or first vortex centres on the reproductive glands. The second vortex centres on the pancreas in the abdominal region. The third centres on the adrenal glandin the solar plexus region. The fourth vortex centres on the thymus gland in the chest or heart region. The fifth centres on the thyroid gland in the neck. The sixth centres on the pineal gland at the rear base of the brain. And the seventh, highest vortex centres on thepituitary gland at the forward base of the brain.*"In a healthy body, each of these vortexes revolves at great speed, permitting vital lifeenergy, also called'prana' or 'etheric energy,' to flow upward through the endocrine system. But if one or more ofthese vortexesbegins to slow down, the flow of vital life energy is inhibited or blocked, and-well, that's justanother name foraging and ill health."These spinning vortexes extend outward from the flesh in a healthy individual, but in theold, weak, andsickly they hardly reach the surface. The quickest way to regain youth, health, and vitality is tostart these energycentres spinning normally again. There are five simple exercises that will accomplish this. Anyone of them aloneis helpful, but all five are required to get best results. These five exercises are not reallyexercises at all. TheLamas call them 'rites,' and so that is how I shall refer to them too."RITE NUMBER ONE"The first rite," continued the Colonel, "is a simple one. It is done for the expresspurpose of speeding upthe vortexes. Children do it all the time when they're playing."All that you do is stand erect with arms outstretched, horizontal to the floor. Now, spinaround until youbecome slightly dizzy. One thing is important: you must spin from left to right. In other words, ifyou were toput a clock on the floor face-up, you would turn in the same direction as the clock hands.*While there are said to be many, perhaps even thousands of these chakras or vortexesthroughout the body, the generally accepted view is that there are seven primary ones. In the original edition of hisbook Mr Kelderasserts that one of these is located in the area of the knees. He does not link the vortexes to theendocrineglands. I have taken the liberty of changing this to conform to the more widely held viewdescribed here.--Editor"At first, most adults will be able to spin around only about half a dozen times beforebecoming quite dizzy. As a beginner, you shouldn't attempt to do more. And if you feel like sitting or lying down torecover from thedizziness, then by all means you should do just that. I certainly did at first. To begin with, practice the rite onlyto the point of slight dizziness. But with time as you practice all five rites you will be able tospin more andmore times with less dizziness."Also, in order to lessen dizziness, you can do what dancers and figure skaters do. Beforeyou begin to spin, focus your vision on a single point straight ahead. As you begin to turn, continue holding yourvision on thatpoint as long as possible. Eventually you will have to let it leave your field of vision, so that yourhead can spinon around with the rest of your body. As this happens, turn your head around very quickly, and refocus on yourpoint as soon as you can. This reference point enables you to become less disoriented anddizzy."When I was in India, it amazed me to see the Maulawiyah, or as they are commonlyknown, the whirlingdervishes, almost unceasingly spin around and around in a religious frenzy. After beingintroduced to ritenumber one, I recalled two things in connection with this practice. First, the whirling dervishesalways spin inone direction, from left to right, or clockwise. Second, the older dervishes were virile, strong, and robust. Farmore so than most men of their age."When I spoke to one of the Lamas about this, he informed me that this whirlingmovement of the dervishesdid have a very beneficial effect, but also a devastating one. He explained that their excessivespinningover-stimulates some of the vortexes, so that they are finally exhausted. This has the effect offirst acceleratingthe flow of vital life energy, and then blocking it. This building up and tearing down actioncauses the dervishesto experience a kind of 'psychic rush,' which they mistake for something spiritual orreligious."However," continued the Colonel. "The Lamas do not carry the whirling to excess. Whilethe whirlingdervishes may spin around hundreds of times, the Lamas do it only about a dozen times or so,just enough tostimulate the vortexes into action."RITE NUMBER TWO"Following rite number one," continued the Colonel, "is a second rite which furtherstimulates the sevenvortexes. It is even simpler to do. In rite number two, one first lies flat on the floor, face up. It'sbest to lie on athick carpet or some sort of padded surface. The Lamas perform the rites on what Westernerscall a prayerrug, about two feet wide and six feet long. It's fairly thick, and is made from wool and a kind ofvegetable fiber. It is solely for the purpose of insulating the body from the cold floor. Nevertheless, religioussignificance isattached to everything the Lamas do, and hence the name 'prayer rug.'"Once you have stretched out flat on your back, fully extend your arms along your sides, and place the palmsof your hands against the floor, keeping the fingers close together. Then, raise your head offthe floor, tuckingthe chin against the chest. As you do this, lift your legs, knees straight, into a vertical position. Ifpossible, let thelegs extend back over the body, toward the head: but do not let the knees bend."Then, slowly lower both the head and the legs, knees straight, to the floor. Allow all ofthe muscles to relax, and then repeat the rite."With each repetition, establish a breathing rhythm: breath in deep as you lift the legs andhead: breathe outfully as you lower them. Between repetitions, while you're allowing the muscles to relax, continue breathing inthe same rhythm. The more deeply you breathe, the better."If you are unable to keep the knees perfectly straight, then let them bend as much asnecessary. But as youcontinue to perform the rite, attempt to straighten them as much as you possibly can."One of the Lamas told me that when he first attempted to practice this simple rite, hewas so old, weak anddecrepit that he couldn't possibly lift his legs into a straight position. So he started by lifting hislegs in a bentposition so that his knees were straight up and his feet were hanging down. Little by little, hewas able tostraighten out his legs until at the end of three months he could raise them straight with perfectease."I marvelled at this particular Lama," said the Colonel. "When he told me this, he was theperfect picture ofhealth and youth, although I knew he was many years older than I. For the sheer joy ofexerting himself, heused to carry a load of vegetables weighing fully a hundred pounds on his back from thegarden to themonastery several hundred feet above. He took his time, but never once stopped on the wayup. When hearrived, he didn't seem to be in the least exhausted. The first time that I attempted to followhim up the hill, Ihad to stop at least a dozen times to catch my breath. Later I was able to climb the hill as easilyas he, andwithout my cane. But that is another story.RITE NUMBER THREE"The third rite should be practiced immediately after rite number two. It too is a verysimple one. All thatyou need to do is kneel on the floor with the body erect. The hands should be placed againstthe thigh muscles."Now, incline the head and neck forward, tucking the chin against the chest. Then, throwthe head and neckback as far as they will go, and at the same time lean backward, arching the spine. As you arch, you will braceyour arms and hands against the thighs for support. After arching, return to the originalposition, and start therite all over again."As with rite number two, you should establish a rhythmic breathing pattern. Breathe indeeply as you archthe spine. Breath out as you return to an erect position. Deep breathing is most beneficial, sotake as much airinto your lungs as you possibly can."I have seen more than 200 Lamas perform this rite together. In order to turn theirattention within, theyclosed their eyes. In this manner they eliminated distractions, and could focus themselvesinwardly."Thousands of years ago, the Lamas discovered that all of the answers to life'simponderable mysteries arefound within. They discovered that all of the things which go together to create our livesoriginate within theindividual. Western man has never been able to understand and comprehend this concept. Hethinks, as I did, that our lives are shaped by the uncontrollable forces of the material world. For example, mostWesternersthink it is a law of nature that our bodies must grow old and deteriorate. By looking within, theLamas knowthis to be a self-fulfilling illusion."The Lamas, especially those at this particular monastery, are performing a great work forthe world. It isperformed, however, on the astral plane. From this plane, they assist mankind around theglobe, for it is highabove the vibrations of the physical world, and is a powerful focal point where much can beaccomplished withlittle loss of effort."One day the world will awaken in amazement to see the result of great works performedby these Lamasand other unseen forces. The time is fast approaching when a new age will dawn, and a newworld will be seen.It will be a time when man learns to liberate the powerful inner forces at his command toovercome war andpestilence, hatred and bitterness."So called 'civilized' mankind is in truth living in the darkest of dark ages. However we arebeing prepared forbetter and more glorious things. Each one of us who strives to raise his or her consciousness tohigher levelshelps to elevate the consciousness of mankind as a whole. So, performing the five rites has animpact far beyondthe physical benefits which they achieve."RITE NUMBER FOUR"The first time I performed rite number four," said the Colonel, "it seemed very difficult. But after a week, itwas as simple to do as any of the others."First sit down on the floor with your legs straight out in front of you and your feet about12 inches apart. With the trunk of the body erect, places the palms of your hands on the floor alongside yourbuttocks. Then, tuck the chin forward against the chest."Now, drop the head backward as far as it will go. At the same time, raise your body sothat the knees bendwhile the arms remain straight. The trunk of the body will be in a straight line with the upperlegs, horizontal tothe floor. And both the arms and lower legs will be straight up and down, perpendicular to the floor. Then, tense everymuscle in the body. Finally, relax your muscles as you return to the original sitting position, and rest beforerepeating the procedure."Again, breathing is important to this rite. Breathe in deeply as you raise up the body.Hold in your breath asyou tense the muscles. And breathe out completely as you come down. Continue breathing inthe same rhythmas long as you rest between repetitions."After leaving the monastery," continued Colonel Bradford, "I went to a number of largercities in India, and asan experiment I conducted classes for both English speaking people and Indians. I found thatthe oldermembers of either group felt that unless they could perform this rite perfectly from the verystart, no good couldcome of it. It was extremely difficult to convince them that they were wrong. Finally, Ipersuaded them to do thebest they could just to see what might happen in a month's time. Once I got them to simply dotheir best inattempting the rites, the results in one month's time were more than gratifying."I remember that in one city I had quite a few elderly people in one of my classes. Inattempting thisparticular rite-number four-they could just barely get their bodies off the floor; they couldn'tcome close toreaching a horizontal position. In the same class, there were some much younger persons whohad no difficultyperforming the rite perfectly the very first day. This so discouraged the older people that I hadto separate thetwo groups. I explained to the older group that when I first attempted this rite, I couldn'tperform it any betterthan they. But I told them, I can now perform fifty repetitions of this rite without feeling theslightest nervous ormuscular strain. And to prove it, I did it right before their eyes. From then on, the older groupbroke allrecords for progress."The only difference between youth and vigour, and old age and poor health is simply therate of speed atwhich the vortexes are spinning. Normalize the rate of speed, and the old man becomes likenew again."RITE NUMBER FIVEThe Colonel went on. "When you perform the fifth rite, your body will be face-down onthe floor. It will besupported by the hands, palms down against the floor, and the toes in a flexed position.Throughout this rite, the hands and feet should each be spaced about two feet apart, and the arms and legs shouldbe kept straight."Start with your arms perpendicular to the floor, and the spine arched, so that the body isin a sagging position. Now, throw the head back as far as possible. Then, bending at the hips, bring the body up intoan inverted 'V'.At the same time, bring the chin forward, tucking it against the chest. That's all there is to it.Return to theoriginal position, and start the rite all over again."By the end of the first week, the average person will find this rite one of the easiest toperform. Once youbecome proficient at it, let the body drop from the raised position to a point almost, but notquite, touching thefloor. Tense the muscles for a moment both at the raised point, and at the low point."Follow the same deep breathing pattern used in the previous rites. Breathe in deeply asyou raise the body.Breathe out fully, as you lower it."Everywhere I go," continued the Colonel, "people at first call these rites isometricexcercises. It's true that thefive rites are helpful in stretching stiff muscles and joints, and improving muscle tone.。

The next morning, however, she found her daughter, Mercy, nearly unconscious with two bite marks in the neck. “I didn’t know that it was a snake,” Mwende said.Although snakebites are common in her hometown, antivenom medication is difficult to get. Mwende lives about 160 kilometers east of Nairobi, Kenya’s capital. So she took her daughter to a traditional healer. He placed stones over the bites. Mercy died within hours. She was one of about 700 Kenyans killed by snakebites each year, notes a report in the scientific publicationToxicon. The Kenya Snakebite Research and Intervention Center (KSRIC) is working to change that. The KSRIC hopes to have East Africa’s first antivenom medication on the market within five years. It estimates the cost will be about 30 percent of an imported product, which often sells for about US $ 30.More than 70, 000 people are bitten in East Africa each year. Climate change and deforestation are worsening the problem as snakes get pushed out of natural surroundings into populated areas.Nearly 100 snakes live at the research center in a forest near Nairobi. Researchers take venom from snakes and study it before injecting small amounts into other animals, such as sheep. The animals then create antibodies that can be made into antivenom.“Up to now, no one has made any kind of antivenom in Kenya,’’ said Geoffrey Maranga Kepha, a senior snake handler. Two effective antivenoms are available in Kenya, from India and Mexico, the center says. The center is teaching communities that using antivenom immediately after receiving a snakebite can save lives, said head researcher George Adinoh.“After seeing how people died in Kenya from snakebites I decided to devote my life to coming up with arescue measure that will help or prevent people from dying from snakebites,” snake handler Kepha added.4. The traditional way is very effective to treat snakebites.D. She believed a traditional healer could cure her daughter.6. What is causing more snakebites to happen in East Africa?A. Lack of antivenom medication.B. Environmental damage and climate change.C. People’s low awareness of the danger of snakes.D. People’s pursuit of traditional cures for snakebites.7. What do we know about antivenom in Kenya from the text?A. Itis taken from antibodies of sheep.B. There is only one effective antivenom available.C. KSRIC is trying to develop a local antivenom now.D. People refuse to use antivenom after being bitten by snakes.CIt is a question people have been asking for ages. The next step is to see if the anti-aging effects also work in.8. In Paragraph 2 a “fountain of youth” is mentioned to ________.A. introduce the main topicB. show a hidden secret.C. describe scientists researchD. recommend a way to stay young9. Aging takes place in the body when _______.A. stem cells develop into specialized cellsB. there are important activities within the bodyC. hypothalamus neural stem cells fail to protect against agingD. the hypothalamus fails to repair damaged tissues and organs10. What do we know about the researchers at Albert Einstein College of Medicine from the text?A. They did experiments to see how stem cells work.B. They studied mice to find their connection with humans.C. They have found a possible way to slow the aging progress.D. They have found no changes in mice s behavior during the experiment11. What will the researchers probably do next?A. They will help some animals live longer.B. They will announce the fountain of youth doesn’t existC. They will develop products to help people live a longer life immediatelyD. They will do research to see if what they have found in mice will apply to humans.DWhether for a special holiday, as a way of showing gratitude or just a way of letting someone know you care, gift giving is a universal custom Though the purpose may be similar from place to place, traditions vary widely from one country to the next. A behavior that shows respect in one place might be consideredoffensivesomewhere else. Take a look at unique gifting traditions from around the world. Here in theUS, a set of kitchen knives seems like the perfect gift idea for a wedding. However, in certain European countries likeGermany, people believe that a knife presented as a gift will cut off your friendship. There is a way to break it: Tie a coin to the knife or gift box. The receiver then returns the coin to you as a “payment”to remove the bad luck. There's a well-known Italian wedding tradition where the groom's (新郎) tie is cut into a number of tiny pieces. Wedding guests can then "buy” these tie pieces in exchange for cash. It's a fun way to give money to the new couple thatleaves guests with a wedding souvenir. As left hands are considered unclean in Indian culture, behaviors such as touching, passing money, or giving gifts are to be done with the right hand. Different from some other cultures , an odd number (奇数) of thingsor currency represents good luck. For example, £11 should be given rather than £10.InZimbabwe, it is common to directly ask for a gift. When you receive a gift without asking for it, even if the giver's family is poor, it's the worst way to reject the offering. Also, expressing thanks with actions is better than giving thanks orally (口头地).These may include jumping up and down, dancing, or whistling.12. What does the underlined word “offensive“ in paragraph 1 refer to?A. Rude.B. Creative.C. Suitable.D. Caring.13. How do people prevent friendship breaking down when giving gifts like knives?A. The guests cut the groom's tie into pieces.B. The receiver returns the coin to the giver.C. The giver gives gifts with the right hand.D. The receiver expresses thanks by dancing.14. What can we learn about the gift giving inZimbabwe?A. It is not proper to ask for a gift directly.B. It's better to reject a gift from a poor family.C. One can express thanks by writing letters.D. Showing gratitude with actions is better than words.15. Which can be a suitable title for the text?A. The Wayof Showing GratitudeB. A Fun Behavior to Respect PeopleC. Various Gift Giving TraditionsD. This was dangerous because e-waste contains harmful chemicals that can leak into the environment, getting into crops, animals, water supplies and people.Alex was really worried and decided to make it next project for WIN-the Westerly Innovations Network. Alex and six of his friends had formed this organization to help solve community problems two years before. But what could they do about this project with e-waste? The team spent several weeks gathering information about the harmful chemicals in e-waste and their effects on humans. They learned how to dispose(处置) of e-waste properly and how it could be recycled. Then, they sent out a Survey and found only one in eight know what e-waste was, let alone how to properly dispose of it.Alex and his friends went into action. They advertised in the local newspaper and distributed notices to students, asking residents to bring their unwanted electronics to the school parking lot. The drive lasted two days, and they collected over 9, 500 kilograms of e-waste. The next step was to set up a long-term e-waste drop-off center for the town. After some research, they’d learned that reusing is the best way to deal with electronic devices and it is seven times more efficient than recycling. So, they began learning to retrofit (翻新) computers themselves and distributed them to students who didn’t have their own. In this way, they could help students inthe area and protect the environment at the same time. For a lasting solution to e-waste, the drop-off center wasn’t enough. Lawswould have to be passed. In 2016, WIN helped push for an e-waste bill in their town, which required companies that manufactured or sold electronics to take back e-waste. The bill clearly forbids the dumping of e-waste. Because of the work of WIN, more and more people, like Alex and his team, are getting the message about safe disposal of e-waste. As Alex says, “Today’s technology should not become tomorrow’s harmful garbage.”4. What was Alex’s worry after he read the article?A. The littering of e-waste.B. The recycling of plastic.C. But MacKenzie, a four-pound Chihuahua (奇瓦瓦狗), who was named winner of the 2020 American Hero Dog competition, is making the world a better place for humans and animals alike. Often called the “Oscars for dogs”, the award recognizes dogs who make great contributions to society. This year's competition attracted over 400 competitors from across the country. While all were impressive, it was tiny MacKenzie who won the judges' hearts. Born at a rescue shelter in Hilton, New York, in 2013, she had a cleft palate (腭裂) that required her to be tube fed for the first year of her life. A life-saving operation, performed in 2014, gave her the ability to eat and drink independently, enabling the tiny dog to focus on doing what she loved most: taking care of others. The seven-year-old Chihuahua is now gainfully “employed” by the Mid Foundation, a Rochester, New York-based non-profit organization that shelters and cares for animals born with disabilities. MacKenzie's official job is “to provide love and care for baby rescue animals born with birth defects”. The Chihuahua is good at her job and hasnurturedmany different species-from puppies to kittens to turkeys, squirrels, birds and even a goat. She acts as their mother and teaches them how to socialize, play, and have good manners. In addition to her role as an animal caretaker, MacKenzie also has the important job of greeting the foundation's volunteers and friends. The incredible dog, who has lost her ability to bark, also visits area schools to help children understand physical disabilities in both animals and people. Which can be a suitable title for the text?A. MacKenzie—The Most Hard-working DogB. MacKenzie—America's “Most Heroic Dog”C. Chihuahua—Inspiration of Positive EnergyD. Chihuahua—Appeal for Animals' ProtectionCIt is a question people have been asking for ages. Theyalso studied the social behavior and cognitive ability of the mice. The researchers say the results show that the treatment slowed aging in the animals, Cai says injecting middle-aged mice with stem cells from younger mice helped the older animals live longer. But these results were just from studying mice in a laboratory. If the mice can live longer, does that mean people could have longer lives? They will do research to see if what they have found in mice will apply to humans.DWhy isn’t science better? Look at career incentive(激励).There are oftensubstantial gaps between the idealized and actual versions of those people whose work involves providing a social good. Government officials are supposed to work for their constituents. Journalists are supposed to provide unbiased reporting and penetrating analysis. And scientists are supposed to relentlessly probe the fabric of reality with the most rigorousand skeptical of methods. All too often, however, what should be just isn’t so. In a number of scientific fields, published findings turn out not toreplicate(复制), or to have smaller effects than, what was initially claimed. Plenty of science does replicate — meaning the experiments turn out the same way when you repeat them -but the amount that doesn’t is too much for comfort. But there are also waysin which scientists increase their chances of getting it wrong. Running studies with small samples, mining data for correlations and forming hypotheses to fit an experiment’s results after the fact are just some of the ways to increase the number of false discoveries. It’s not like we don't know how to do better. Scientists who study scientific methods have known about feasible remedies for decades. Unfortunately, their advice often falls ondeaf ears. Why? Why aren't scientific methods better than they are? In a word: incentives. But perhaps not in the way you think. In the 1970s, psychologists and economists began to point out the danger in relying on quantitative measures for social decision-making. For example, when public schools are evaluated by students’ performance on standardized tests, teachers respond by teaching “to the test”. In turn, the test serves largely as of how well the school can prepare students for the test.We can see this principle—often summarized as “when a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measure”—playing out in the realm of research. Science is a competitive enterprise. There are far more credentialed (授以证书的) scholars and researchers than there are university professorships or comparably prestigious research positions. Once someone acquires a research position, there is additional competition for tenure grant funding, and support and placement for graduate students. Due to this competition for resources, scientists must be evaluated and compared. How do you tell if someone is a good scientist? An oft-used metric is the number of publications one has in peer-reviewed journals, as well as the status of those journals. Metrics like these make it straightforward to compare researchers whose work may otherwise be quite different. Unfortunately, this also makes these numbers susceptible to exploitation. If scientists are motivated to publish often and in high-impact journals, we might expect them to actively try to game the system. And certainly, some do—as seen in recent high-profile cases of scientific fraud(欺诈). If malicious fraud is the prime concern, then perhaps the solution is simply heightened alertness. However, most scientists are, I believe, genuinely interested in learning about the world, and honest. The problem with incentives is that they can shape cultural norms without any intention on the part of individuals. 12. Which of the following is TRUE about the general trend in scientific field?A. Scientists are persistently devoted to exploration of reality.B. The research findings fail to achieve the expected effect.C. Hypotheses are modified to highlight the experiments' results.D. The amount of science that does replicate is comforting.13. What doesdeaf earsin the fourth paragraph probably refer to?A. The public.B. The incentive initiators.C. The peer researchers.D. The high-impact journal editors.14. Which of the following does the author probably agree with?A. Good scientists excel in seeking resources and securing research positions.B. Competition for resources inspires researchers to work in a more skeptical way.C. All the credentialed scholars and researchers will not take up university professorships.D. The number of publication reveals how scientists are bitterly exploited.15. According to the author, what might be a remedy for the fundamental problem in scientific research?A. High-impact journals are encouraged to reform the incentives for publication.B. The peer-review process is supposed to scale up inspection of scientific fraud.C. Researchers are motivated to get actively involved in gaming the current system.D. Career incentives for scientists are expected to consider their personal intention.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。
