It was a traditional Chinese wedding with lots of fun customs and rituals. But some of my friends have parents from Western countries, and their weddings look quite different. After going to a few weddings of different cultures, I've noticed many fascinating differences between Chinese and Western wedding traditions. One of the biggest differences is the clothing. In a Chinese wedding, the bride usually wears a stunning red qipao or long traditional gown. The color red is super important because it symbolizes good luck, happiness and prosperity. My cousin's dress was the most beautiful shade of ruby red with delicate embroidered phoenixes and peonies all over it. She looked like a goddess! Western brides, on the other hand, almost always wear a white gown. White represents purity and a fresh start in theirculture. The dresses are usually poufy at the bottom and have long trailing trains. Some have lace or beadwork decorations which look very pretty and intricate.Another major contrast is the ceremony itself. Chinese weddings involve lots of ancient customs passed down over thousands of years. There are elaborate rituals like the bride being picked up by the groom after a series of games, and the couple bowing to heaven and earth as part of their vows. Western weddings tend to be a little more simplified. The couple usually recites straightforward vows they wrote themselves while standing before an officiant. However, they make up for the simplicity with personalized touches like unique readings, musical performances, and decorations that reflect their personality as a couple.Food is also quite different between the two cultures' weddings. At a traditional Chinese banquet, there will be course篇2Weddings Are Fun but Really Different in China and America!Hi there! My name is Emma and I'm 10 years old. I love learning about different cultures and traditions around the world. Today I want to tell you about the big differences I've noticedbetween weddings in China and weddings in America. Get ready, because there's a lot to cover! In China, weddings have tons of really cool traditions that go way back in history. One of the biggest differences is the colors. While American brides usually wear a white dress, Chinese brides wear a red dress! Red is considered a very lucky color in China. It represents prosperity, joy, and good fortune. I think the red dresses look so vibrant and pretty.Another major Chinese wedding tradition is the Tea Ceremony. This dates back thousands of years to ancient times! Basically, the newlyweds serve tea to their parents, grandparents, and other close family elders. By serving the tea, the couple shows respect and thanks to their families. The elders can then give the couple words of wisdom for a happy marriage. How sweet is that?Speaking of families, Chinese weddings involve both the bride and groom's families a whole lot more than American weddings. The parents often help plan every little detail and make a lot of the big decisions. American weddings tend to focus more just on the couple themselves. I can see pros and cons to both approaches! One more unique tradition is the hairstyling for the bride. On her wedding day, a Chinese bride has her hair styled in an elaborate updo with phoenix crowns, dragon headpieces, and tons of pretty ornaments and flowers! It's such an intricate and beautiful look. A makeup artist spends hours perfecting it. In America, most brides just wear their hair down or in a simple updo. Now let's talk about American weddings for a bit. The biggest shocker for me was that American brides actually toss their bouquet to their single friends! In China, the bride is supposed to keep her bouquet as a symbol of lasting love and good luck. I would be so sad if I had to throw away my pretty bouquet!Another difference is that Chinese couples tend to have more modest wedding ceremonies and celebrations compared to America. While Chinese weddings do have delicious food, music, and sometimes dancers, it's usually just for one day. In America, it's super common to have a huge blowout wedding weekend with tons of different events and parties! For example, American couples often have engagement parties, bridal showers, bachelor/ette parties, welcome parties, farewell brunches, and more. That sounds both really excitingbut also exhausting to me! I can barely keep up with all of those parties as a kid. How do the adults handle it?One thing I like more about American weddings is that couples have a lot more freedom to personalize everything. They can pick their own venue, colors, foods, DJ, photographers, you name it! In China, a lot of those decisions are more dictated by tradition and family preferences. But honestly, all of the different traditions are what make weddings so special and unique across cultures. They symbolize the couple's heritage, beliefs, and background. At their core, both Chinese and American weddings are all about celebrating two people joining their lives together through the sacred bond of marriage. Those are some of the biggest differences I've noticed so far between weddings in the East and West. I'm sure there are plenty more fascinating traditions and customs I haven't even learned about yet. I'd love to be a wedding planner someday so I can help bring different cultural elements together for couples. Weddings are just the coolest!I hope you found this peek into Chinese and American wedding traditions interesting. Even though the specifics vary, both cultures make weddings an incredibly joyful, meaningful,once-in-a-lifetime occasion. Marriage is a beautiful thing to celebrate no matter where you are in the world. Thanks for reading my essay! Let me know if you have any other questions.篇3My Views on the Differences Between Chinese and Western WeddingsWeddings are super fun! You get to dress up, eat yummy food, and celebrate two people who love each other a whole lot. But did you know that weddings can look really different depending on if you're in China or in a Western country like America or England? I'm going to tell you about some of the biggest differences I've noticed. In China, red is a very lucky color for weddings. The bride will often wear a red dress or at least have red decorations or accents. She might even have red makeup or red jewelry! In Western weddings though, white is the color for the bride's dress. The white dress is supposed to symbolize purity and a fresh start. I think red is such a vibrant, exciting color though - I might want to wear red on my wedding day when I grow up!Another big difference is the type of food served at the weddings. At Chinese weddings, there are often many courses offood like seafood, meat dishes, rice, noodles, dumplings, and soup. It's basically like having a huge fancy dinner with all your favorite Chinese dishes. At Western weddings, there is usually just one main course like chicken, beef, or fish that everyone eats. But there are also tons of little finger foods and appetizers to snack on before the main meal. The ceremonies themselves are quite different too. In a traditional Chinese wedding, there are a lot of customs and rituals that take place over several days. Things like the groom's family giving the bride's family gifts, the couple bowing to elders and heavens, sharing a drink of wine or tea together, and even the bride getting carried in a decorated sedan chair! Western weddings usually just have one ceremony on a single day at a church or venue. The couple exchanges rings and vows, has a first dance and cake cutting, and that's it!One tradition I really like from Western weddings is the bouquet toss. After the new husband and wife's first dance, the bride will turn around and toss her flower bouquet over her shoulder to all the single women in attendance. Whoever catches the bouquet is said to be the next one who will get married! How fun is that? Chinese weddings don't really have an equivalent tradition. The wedding attire is quite different too, especially for the groom. At a Chinese wedding, the groom will often wear a traditional long robe called a Changshan. It's brightly colored like red, blue, or golden yellow. For Western weddings though, the groom just wears a basic tuxedo or suit like he would for any very formal occasion. Definitely not as fancy as the Chinese groom attire!Whether the wedding is Chinese or Western style, I think the most important part is celebrating the love between two people who want to spend their whole lives together. The different traditions are what make weddings so unique and special for each culture. I can't wait to decide whether I want a red Chinese wedding dress or a classic white Western one when I get married someday! Maybe I'll mix a little of both traditions to make my wedding extra memorable.篇4The Different Ways People Get MarriedWeddings are a big deal all over the world. It's when two people who love each other very much make a promise to stay together forever. But even though weddings are about the samebasic thing, the way people celebrate them can be really different depending on where they're from.In the United States and other Western countries, there are a lot of fun traditions for weddings. The bride, which is the name for the woman getting married, usually wears a big fancy white dress. The dress is often super long with a wedding veil over the bride's face. The groom, which is what you call the man getting married, wears a black tuxedo suit.At the actual wedding ceremony, the bride walks down a long aisle towards the groom while special wedding music plays. Brides often get accompanied down the aisle by their father. The bride carries a bouquet of flowers, usually roses or other pretty flowers. Once she gets to the front, the bride and groom face each other and make their vows, which are the special romantic promises they make to each other. They exchange rings as a symbol that they'll be married forever. After the vows, the bride and groom share their first married kiss. Then there's usually a big party called the reception where everyone eats fancy food, drinks champagne (the adults, not the kids!), and dances to celebrate the new married couple. At the end of the night, the bride throws her bouquet over her shoulderto all the unmarried women behind her. Whoever catches it is supposedly the next one who will get married!Chinese weddings have some similarities, like the bride wearing a fancy dress and the couple making vows. But there are a lot of interesting differences too. Like, traditional Chinese brides don't wear just one dress – they might change into three different dresses throughout the day! The first look is bright and colorful, the second is more elegant, and the third dress at the end of the night is often a Western-style white gown.Another unique Chinese tradition is the tea ceremony. At the wedding reception, the new husband and wife serve tea to their parents, grandparents, and other close elderly relatives. Serving the tea is a sign of respect, and the relatives give the couple gifts like red envelopes with money inside as a blessing for their marriage.Speaking of blessings, there are a lot of symbols and traditions at Chinese weddings that are supposed to bring the couple good luck. Decorations like dragons and phoenixes (which are mythical bird creatures) represent power, strength, and prosperity. The color red is everywhere because it's a lucky color symbolizing happiness and fertility. Firecrackers are set off to scare away evil spirits. And both families try to find anauspicious date on the lunar calendar to hold the wedding for the best possible fortune.Food is a really big part of Chinese wedding celebrations too. There are often 10 or more elaborate courses of symbolic dishes like whole fish (for abundance) and longevity noodles (for a long life together). Desserts like lotus seed soup and egg tarts represent fertility so the couple can have many children. Yum!Other cool Chinese customs include the groom giving his bride's family gifts like money and food before the wedding as a formality. And the night before their wedding, the couple drinks a sweet wine called "ui tiu" from two cups tied together with a red string to show their bond.So as you can see, weddings are these amazing celebrations of love all over the world. But the specific rituals and details look quite different depending if you're in the West or China. Both have their own beauty and special meaning. I think getting to see two different cultures' wedding traditions is so neat! One day when I get married, maybe I'll combine some Western and Chinese customs to have the best of both worlds. But no matter what, I'll be sure to have a wonderful time celebrating my marriage just like brides and grooms everywhere.篇5My Views on the Differences Between Chinese and Western Wedding CulturesWeddings are super duper important events! They are when two people who really really love each other promise to be together forever and ever. I've been to a few weddings of family members and friends, and I've noticed some big differences between Chinese weddings and Western weddings. Here are my thoughts! One major difference is the wedding clothes. In China, the bride usually wears a sexy red dress called a qipao or a big fancy ballgown style dress. The groom wears a snazzy suit. But in America and other Western countries, the bride normally wears a gorgeous white dress! Can you imagine?? A white dress just for one day and then you can never wear it again. That seems kind of wasteful to me. The white dress represents purity and a new start, which is nice, but red is such a happier and luckier color in Chinese culture. The groom in Western weddings also wears a suit, but sometimes they are cute colored suits or tuxedos.Another big difference is all the crazy games and traditions that happen before a Chinese wedding! Like, the groom has todo all these tasks and pay money to the bride's family. One time, I saw some groomsmen had to eat really really gross stuff like stinky tofu or chicken feet before they could pick up their buddy, the groom. How funny is that? The families make the groom work super hard to show he is worthy of marrying their daughter. Some brides even get helped into their dresses by a bunch of ladies locked in the same room to keep them "pure" for the groom. So many rules! Western weddings seem a lot more relaxed by comparison. But probably the biggest difference between Chinese and Western weddings is the receptions and ceremonies themselves. Chinese weddings are usually massively huge events with hundreds of people invited from both sides of the family tree. The receptions go on for hours with tons of delicious food, drinks, games, and entertainment. Comedians are even hired to keep things fun! My aunt's wedding had a crazy money dance where guests had to pay to dance with the bride and groom. The more money you paid, the longer you could dance. My dad jokingly paid 5 to dance for like 10 seconds. So silly!Western weddings often seem a lot smaller to me. Like just very close friends and family rather than everyone you've ever met. Sometimes there are fun receptions to party and dance, butother times it's just a quick ceremony at a church or courthouse and then maybe a small reception with cake afterwards. Doesn't seem as exciting if you ask me! Though I guess it's nice they don't have to pay for a crazy expensive wedding if they don't want to.Another thing I find really fascinating is all the symbolism and luck involved in Chinese weddings. Like, there are specific dates that are better for weddings based on fortune tellers and the zodiac calendar. Certain symbols like dragons and phoenixes have to be included in the decorations and clothes to represent the groom and bride. Even giving money in red envelopes is supposed to bring good wealth and fertility. Western weddings don't seem to have as many superstitions and symbolic meanings from what I've seen. One similarity between Chinese and Western weddings though is the throwing of the bouquet and garter. The bride throws her bouquet over her shoulder and whichever single lady catches it is supposed to be the next to get married. How crazy would that be if it actually came true every time?! I've caught the bouquet before but I'm definitely too young to think about getting married. I'll just re-gift it to my mom. The groom also takes off the bride's garter and throws it to the single guys forgood luck. I always think that part is kind of gross for some reason.Overall, while I find all the different cultures and traditions super interesting, I think Chinese weddings seem way more lively, festive and filled with laughter and chaos. Food for hundreds of people, wild games, and enough superstitions to make your head spin! Western weddings look a bit more formal andlow-key by comparison. But no matter what the traditions are, a wedding is a wonderful celebration of love between two soul mates. I can't wait to go to more weddings and see all the fun customs for myself as I get older. Maybe I'll even get to catch the bouquet again!篇6Different Kinds of Weddings Around the WorldHi there! My name is Lucy and I'm 10 years old. I love learning about different cultures and traditions from around the world. Today, I want to tell you about some of the cool differences I've noticed between Chinese weddings and Western weddings like the kind you might see in America or England. In China, red is a really important color for weddings because it symbolizes good luck and prosperity. The brideusually wears a red dress and red decorations are everywhere at the wedding venue. But in Western countries, white is the traditional color for the bride's dress. A white gown represents purity and a fresh start for the new marriage. Some Chinese brides also change into a white dress later in the wedding day.Another big difference is all the crazy games and traditions that happen before a Chinese wedding! The groom has to go through a bunch of challenges set up by the bride's family and friends before he can see his bride. He might have to answer hard riddles, eat weird foods, or even get tied up! This is meant to prove his worthiness and commitment. Western weddings usually skip straight to the ceremony.Speaking of ceremonies, Chinese weddings are a lot louder and more boisterous than Western ones. There is lots of loud music, drums, firecrackers, and rowdy guests. But Western weddings are generally more solemn and quiet during the vows. Although afterwards at the reception, there is just as much eating, drinking, and dancing! At Chinese weddings, it's extremely important to have an even number of guests because odd numbers are considered unlucky. Red envelopes stuffed with cash are given to the newlyweds as gifts. The bride's family also gives the groom'sfamily elaborate gift baskets. But in the West, couples usually just get household items and gift cards from a wedding registry. After the ceremony, the bride takes off her bouquet and tosses it over her shoulder to all the unmarried ladies behind her. Whoever catches it is supposedly the next to get married. I've never seen this funny tradition at any of the Chinese weddings I've been to!Thefeasting and banqueting is a huge part of both Chinese and Western weddings. But the types of food served are quite different. At Chinese banquets, there are usually 8-10 elaborately prepared courses featuring delicacies like whole roasted pig, shark fin soup, lobster, and birds nest dishes. Everything is meant to symbolize prosperity and fertility. Western receptions tend to have a lighter meal with dishes like steak, chicken, pasta, salads and cake for dessert. Finally, Chinese newlyweds usually go on shorter"mini-moon" honeymoons right after the wedding, while Western couples often take much longer romantic getaways to exotic destinations around the world. Some even wait a year or so for an extended anniversary trip. Those are just some of the fascinating cultural differences between Chinese and Western style weddings! There are somany other fun traditions and symbolic meanings. While the celebrations may look different on the surface, they all represent the same thing at the core - the joyous union of two souls coming together as one. I can't wait until I'm old enough to get married myself someday!。

I. IntroductionMarriage is the basic system and form that both sexes combine in society. The marriage culture is produced with the development of marriage, which reflects a certain marriage conception. Marriage custom not only incarnates the social appearance in some times, but also shows values, ways of thinking, and religious beliefs of one nation.1In ancient China, people thought highly of marriage culture. Ancient people regarded marriage as the primary and incipience of all decorum. Chinese long history and abundance culture have penetrated into marriage culture, so it is the cohesion of Chinese culture. While because of geography, nationality, history, religious beliefs and other aspects, the marriage culture in western countries is different from Chinese. Therefore, this paper has discussed the differences of marriage culture among Chinese, British and American. Firstly, it has introduced some similarities of marriage culture between China and Western Countries. Secondly, it has described ancient and modern Chinese marriage culture, the British and American marriage culture. Besides, it has introduced some main differences, such as the wedding process, the wedding dress, the wedding car and other details. Finally, it analyzed the causes of differences, including religious beliefs, the ways of thinking.II. Similarities of Marriage Culture between China and Western Countries Every country has her nationality, but they have some similarities. No matter in China or Western Countries, marriage is a great turning point in life. Both of people all pay great attention on it, and they always choose a nice day, which is sunny and propitious time, so wedding date is very important in every country. In ancient China, people would like to choose an auspicious day based on lunar calendar, which meant the couple would love each other and live a good life in the future. Similarly, the foreigners also choose a perfect day to hold wedding. For example, in England men hate to hold wedding in May. Because May has been considered an unlucky month to marry in. In addition, Fridays were considered unlucky particularly Friday the 13th. There has a famous old rhyme advises a wedding of the week. “Monday for wealth, Tuesda y for health, Wednesday the best day of all, Thursday for losses, Friday for crosses, Saturday for no luck at all.2At present, western cultures have made great influences on Chinese wedding, so they also have some similarities. We can see that many young people would like to hold their weddings in church. Moreover, in wedding, the bride wears wedding veil, the groom dresses suit and necktie, their relatives and friends are all sit there to make bless for them. After the wedding, the bride will stand back the other people and then throw a red ball to the unmarried female. As the story says, no matter who got the ball, she would be married soon or later. So all the unmarried females stand together and try their best to gain it. Besides, many newlyweds would like to take their honeymoon, a one-to-two week vacation trip, to celebrate their new marriage. III. Differences of Marriage Culture between China and Western CountriesA. Marriage Culture of China1. Traditional Marriage CultureIn ancient China, the model of traditional marriage culture including six etiquettes. The first step was proposing, which was very important in ancient China. Because it was the first time to meet with each other for the two families. If a male’s parents liked someone’s daughter and thought she had some qualities to become their daughter-in-law, they would appoint a matchmaker carried with some presents to the identified girl’s family. If the girl’s parents would like to agree this proposal, they would send someone who carried wit h some presents to the boy’s family in return. The second step was asking name. In ancient times, the girl’s name did not tell others until she chosen husband. In fact, it was not only to know the girl’s name, but also to write down the girl’s birthday and birth-hour on paper, which used to make a divination. In this step, matchmaker played an important role in communication. We knew in Chinese traditional marriage, people qualified a validity marriage for parents and matchmaker. In ancient, a boy wanted to make a proposal with a girl, and the girl also enjoyed him, but she refused his requirement. She said that she could not accept his mind because he not had matchmaker.3 Today we will be confused for her words. While in ancient times, without a matchmaker, their marriage would be immorality. The next step was birthday matching. After asking the name, male’s parents would appoint the matchmaker to ask for the girl’s birthday and birth hour to assure the compatibility of the potential bride and groom. The divination included two aspects: the first was asking women’s quality. In ancients’ view, a man always had several wives. In order to let them get well with each other, he always considered his wife’s quality as an important factor. The second was to see whether the girl could match up with her husband. If her birthday and birth hour did not conflict with her husband according to astrology, the marriage would step into the next stage. The fourth step was presenting betrothal gifts. After birthdays matching, the groom’s family arranged the matchmaker to present betrothal gifts, enclosing the betrothal letter to the bride’s family. This stage including two meanings: one side was to show their thanks for the girl’s parents, the other side was to purchase dowrie s for Bride. If the girl’s parents accepted the betrothal gifts, their marriage could be a deal, and could not be changed on their own opinion. The fifth step was picking a wedding date. When they chosen a good day, they would tell the girl’s family and g ive them time to prepare dowries. The ancients would like to choose the marriage time on spring or autumn. Because people thought spring was the beginning of a year and good for everything, and autumn was a harvest season, so they had enough money to hold a wedding. The last step was wedding ceremony, which was the most liveliness and best time of the traditional marriage culture. At that day, groom who wore hat and safflower departured with a troop of escorts and musicians, playing happy music all the way to meet his bride. However, before he met his bride, the bride’s relatives and good friends would settle some obstacles to groom until they satisfied with him. While at the same time, the bride put on new clothes in her room. Then, she got in sedan, and escorted by a group of people to her new home. After they reached the destination, the bride’s feet could not touch the threshold when entering her new home, so need her husband to carry her over it. When the groom’s parents and all the relatives gathered in the hall, the newlyweds began to do some obeisance, such as kowtows to the Heaven and Earth, the family ancestors and parents, bow to each other and so on. Under the applauses of the audience, the bride was taken to her chamber. This was the end of the wedding.2. Modern Marriage CultureNowadays, modern marriage culture has some innovations based on traditional marriage culture. To sum up, modern marriage culture has two characteristics: firstly modern marriage culture still depends on the past. Nowadays many young people enjoy to pursuit an original and unusual wedding, but it is easy to find some reflections of the traditional culture, especially in some countries and minorities. Secondly, western marriage culture influenced modern marriage culture. With the open and reform of China, more and more foreigners come to our country, expecting for increasing our economy, they also influence our traditional culture, religious beliefs and ways of thinking. Therefore, modern marriage culture consists of amativeness, engagement and marriage. The first is amativeness. We have learned that parents and matchmaker played important roles in traditional marriage culture. While for the two actors, they have no choice but to accept this engagement. However, at present, matchmaker is not important in marriage. Even many young people do not consider their parents’ feeling any longer, most times they would like to choose their companions by themselves. They always hope that their companions have the similar hobbies, characteristics and ambition with them. Besides, they hope they should have equal rights in their life. When they meet some difficult problems, they will tell each other at first and then discuss how to deal with them. Once they think that they have find perfect companions, they will clear away all troubles to live together. After they get along with each other several months or several years, they begin to discuss matrimony. This called engagement. In urban, the traditional engagement is weaker than before. The man’s parents carrying with some presents to call at woman’s home. During this meeting, both of them are familiar with each other and discuss the wedding date, the bridal chamber, and other necessary things. Once they reach an agreement, the man will b uy a golden ring for his fiancée. After the engagement, this thing can’t be cancelled at will. While in rural it is a significant event. First, the woman’s mother invites her relatives to call at the man’s home. If they satisfy with all things, they begin to discuss some details about the marriage. Besides, the man’s parents still prepare some precious gifts and a lot of money for their daughter-in-law to purchase dowries. In some undeveloped country, they can’t offer enough money for dowry, so many grown m en can’t get married. Even if in some wealthy countries, many marriages have to be cancelled because both of them can’t make an agreement on money. Therefore, money is to be an obstacle to a happy marriage in rural, which needs us to change it.4 Once the engagement come into force, the woman and her parents cannot go back their words. Otherwise, they are not only considered immorality, but also have to pay for the economic loss to the other side.At last, it is turn to hold wedding. In our country after getting a certificate, people can hold a wedding. On wedding day, the bride gets up early and dresses up herself in a beauty parlor, then stays at home to wait for her groom. At the same time, the groom and his relatives drive several decorated cars to meet bride. Similarly, before him meet his wife, the bride’s relatives and good friends will settle some obstacles to spite him until they satisfied with him. About twelve o’clock, the groom dresses up business suit and necktie and the bride wears bridal veil, standing in the front of the restaurant to receive their relatives and friends. When all the guests arrive there, the new couple goes to the dinner hall with Wedding March, which is the climax of the wedding. At this time, the guests can ask the newlywed to introduce their love affairs, and even their friends will do some hoaxes to make fun of them. Afterwards under the guidance of the elders, the newlywed will drink toasts to their guests one by one. This isthe end of the marriage.B. Marriage Culture of Western CountriesMany western countries have some similarities in marriage culture, but also have their own national characteristics. Now, I will take Britain and American for example.1. British Marriage CultureIn the past, parents or guardians arranged marriage. The bride and groom often were not acquainted until their marriage. The parents often made the marriage arrangements and betrothals while the bride and groom were small children. The children would continue to live with their own parents and meet from time to time for meals or holiday celebrations. However, because of the Civil Marriage Act, a qualified marriage always required parents’ agreement, publication of banns, a register, two or more witnesses, or issuance of a license.Today, British marriage culture has some changes based on the tradition. Young people can choose their girl friends or boy friends on their own wishes. When the men and women’s affection become stable, they will tell their parents and then publish the engagement on newspaper. The betrothal rites of England often hold at bride’s home. They arrange a wedding banquet, and invite their friends and relatives to take part. Under the celebrations of all the guests, the groom wears the ring on the bride’s left middle finger, which implies that she belongs to him. After the engagement, they begin to prepare the wedding. Generally, it holds in church, groom who wears formal dress standing in front of alter to wait for his bride. While the bride whose one-hand holds a rose, and the other hand hooks on her father’s arm and walks to her groom. Then minister reads out the meaning and purpose of Christianity marriage, and ask the bride and groom if they would like to marry with each other. When their answers have no doubt, the minister will give the bride’s right hand to the groom’s and speak out the marriage vows together. After this, groom puts the ring on his bride’s third finger of the left hand. Then, groom takes his bride out of the church, while their relatives throw rice, colorful pieces of paper to them.At the dinner, the new couple will use a knife to cut a big cake, and feed each of them a bit. Guests mingle while enjoying cake, punch and other treats. Later the bride throws her bouquet of flowers to a group of single girls. At the end of the dinner, the couple bid farewell to their friends and then take a honeymoon, one or two week’s vacation trip, to celebrate their marriage.2. American Marriage CultureIn American traditional wedding custom, a young man asks the father of hissweetheart for permission to marry her. If the father agrees, the man later proposes to the woman. The man usually gives his fiancée a diamond ring as a symbol of their engagement. After they engaged for weeks, months, or even years, they begin to prepare their wedding. Before two or three months of the wedding, the bride’s family will arrange a bridal shower. In that day, the bride’s relatives and friends give their special gifts to her, and then she open these gifts one by one to enjoy them. Usually, women will prepare cake to regal their both relatives. Besides, the groom and the bride will hold parties with their own friends to farewell their single life. Then the bride’s parents begin to prepare all things of the wedding, such as the bridal wedding veil, the invitation, the auditorium and so on.At last, it’s time for the wedding. At that day, the couple may invite hundreds of people or just a few close friends to join in their wedding in church. As the ceremony begins, the groom stands with the minister, facing the audience. Followed by Wedding Match, groomsmen and bridesmaids, maid of honor, ring bearer and flower girl, and then bride’s father take her daughter entering. When they reach the altar, the bride’s father put her daughter’s right hand into the groom’s left hand. Then, the bride and the groom face the minister to take vows.Firstly, minister announces to the audience: Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to join these two people in holy matrimony, if any one can show just cause why they may not be lawfully joined together, let them speak now or forever hold their peace. If there is anyone who feels that this ceremony should not continue, please speak now. For several minutes, if there is no one to oppose, he then addresses the newlywed and asks: do you take this man or woman to be your lawfully wedded husband or wife, to live together after god’s ordinance, in the holy estate of matrimony? Will you love, honor, comfort, and cherish her from this day forward, forsaking all others, keeping only unto her for as long as you both shall live. After the couple answering ‘I do’, they begins to make their marriage vows: I take thee to be my wedded wife or husband, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better for worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love, honor, and cherish, until death do us part, according to God’s holy ordinance; and thereto I plight thee my troth. After taking the vows, the minister gets bride’s and groom’s rings from the best man and maid of honor, and then prays over their rings. Groom and bride exchange their rings. The minister joins their right hands together and pronounces that they are husband and wife. Later out of church, the bride throws her bouquet of flowers to a group of single girls. Tradition says that the one who catches the bouquet will be next to many. Then the newlywedsrun to their decorated car with a ‘Just Married’ and speed off to celebrate their new marriage.C. Main differences of Marriage Culture between China and Western Countries1. The Wedding ProcessIn ancient China, people considered marriage as a very important thing in life. Therefore, they divided marriage into six steps: Proposing, Asking Name, Birthday Matching, Presenting Betrothal Gifts, Picking a Wedding Date, Wedding Ceremony. This was a very complicated process. At the wedding day, the groom was crowed among his friends as escorts and musicians who played happy music all the way to bride’s home. About twelve o’clock, the bride and groom reached their new home, and went to the family altar, where the couple paid kowtows to Heaven and Earth, the family ancestors and parents successively. After bowing to each other, the bride went to the bridal chamber. The western-style wedding including ceremony and banquet two parts:At 17:00 o’clock, the ceremony start, the Priest arrives; broadcast approach music, the best man and bridesmaid enter the church, nearby weight stand and face the guests. The ring child gives the wedding ring to the Priest. At 17:03, along with the wedding ceremony matching song, the bride pulls her father and enters the church. Then bride’s father personally puts his daughter’s hand to the groom’s hand. At 17:10, music stop and entire audience are silent. The bride and the groom exchange the rings and take on oath. At 17:15, Chief wedding witness gives a speech. At 17:20, the ceremony finish. The newlywed leave the stage after music resounds, the guest applauds the celebration and strews the flower petal to the newlywed. At 17:30, the newlywed and the guests photograph accepts as a memento. At 17:40, the orchestra plays music, the guests enter the dinning room, may enjoy themselves to dine the savory and drink. At 18:10, after the newlywed enters the dinning room, first food starts to provide, and the waiter pours out the champagne to the visitor. The important guest gives a speech. At 18:40, after the savory, the newlywed jump the bridal waltz. The best man, bridesmaid and other guests enter the dance floor afterwards to dance together. At 19:00, all the people takes a seat again and waiting for the staple food. At 19:30, while provide the sweet snake, the dance party continued. At 20:00, the bride throws the bouquet of flowers. At 20:10, the newlywed shuttle between the guests and thank for their presence, also provide the coffee and each kind of drinks. At 20:30, after the newlywed cut the cake together, the guests dance or leave the banquet freely.52. The Wedding DressIn ancient China, people like red color, so on their wedding day bride and groom are all putting on red clothes, which symbolize jubilation, lively, and happiness. Today, people like to hold wedding in church, but the bride’s wedding veil is borrowed from a certain wedding company. However, in western countries, people advocate purity and romantic, therefore, the brides always wear traditional white, and draw on a pair of white glove, and their wedding veils made by themselves. Especially, American brides always wear something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue. Something old is the wedding veil, or headgear, which inherits from the bride’s mother. Something new is the bride’s gifts, which come from her friends, such as skirt, accouterment and so on. Something borrowed is from anybody else. It said that the bride puts borrowed gold or silver in her shoes will bring her luck of wealth. Something blue is the bride’s blue accouterments or bouquets, which mean bride’s purity and chastity.63. The Wedding CarChinese people decorate their wedding cars with red flowers and balloon. Besides, they put a pair of moppets on the car, which symbolize the bride and the groom. While, foreigners decorate their wedding cars with tissue paper, cans or old shoes, and a "Just Married" sign. As said that the sounds made by the cans or old shoes can lustrate demon and bring good luck for the newlywed.74. Other DetailsFirstly, the groom’s family bears the expense of the marriage in China, while in western countries, the costs are totally took by the bride’s family. Secondly, Chinese wedding always needs one groom man and bride maid, while the foreigners need two or more groomsman and bridesmaid. In addition, the bride always goes back to her parents to live with them several days. However, in western countries after the wedding, the newlywed runs to take their honeymoon directly, to celebrate their new marriage. While best man and bridesmaid hold their wedding dinner.IV. Causes of differences in Chinese Marriage Culture and Western CountriesA. Religious BeliefsChina regards Buddhism as principle, and thinks the marriage is destined by heaven, so people have no ability to change it. Therefore, in traditional marriage culture, bowing to heaven and earth is an important part of wedding. Moreover, Chinese people apply red to add happy atmosphere in such big days. Therefore, at the wedding day, the bride’s clothes and shoes are red, even bridal’s chamber and their sedan chairs are decorated with red. Besides, people consider that a qualified marriage must need a matchmake r’s collection and parents’ agreement. While Christianity believesthat “marriage is joined together by god, let not man put asunder.”8 When they get married, they should gain the god’s agreement. Therefore, theyhold their wedding in church, where bride and groom read out vows to each other under the witness of the minister and their relatives. In addition, the bride must wear traditional white veil in western wedding. Since Roman times, white has symbolized happiness, and wealth. Even now, it stands for purity and romantic.B. Ways of ThinkingThe different marriage custom has a direct contraction with the ways of thinking. Chinese people are more conservative, and more old-fashioned. So several thousand years past, their marriage custom hasn’t changed a l ot until western cultures are introduced into their nation. In addition, Chinese people love jollification. For example, after wedding banquet, the friends of the new couple will go to their new room. They believe that the livelier in the bride’s chamber, the more happiness the new couple will get in their later life. So people take various methods to make difficulties for the newlywed. However, the western people are quite more open and they demand a little about their wedding. Their wedding always holds in church: the bride and groom entering the church followed with wedding match, the bride whose one-hand holds a rose, and the other hand hooks on her father’s arm and walk to the groom. Then the bride’s father put her right hand on the groom’s hand, which means he trust the groom and hope the groom can protect, love his daughter forever. At the same time, all the people will bless the new couple. In the front of the minister, the newlywed makes their marriage vows and exchanges their rings. After the minister saying that seal the promises you have made with each other with a kiss, the wedding ends. At last, bride and groom will take their honeymoon for one or two weeks. V. ConclusionThe marriage culture is produced with the development of marriage, which reflects a certain marriage conception. It does not only incarnate the social appearance in some times, but also shows values, ways of thinking, and religious beliefs of one nation. So it is very important to understand the differences of marriage culture in different countries. Firstly, I have introduced the similarities of marriage culture between China and Western Countries. For example, they all choose propitious day to hold their wedding. Besides, they have some other similarities in modern marriage culture. Then I have introduced differences among Chinese, British and American marriage culture, including the wedding process, the wedding dress, the wedding car, and other details. According to the comparison of marriage culture, we can understand their religious beliefs, ways of thinking, culture and so on.In a word, with the development of global economy, people from different countries communicate with each other frequently, so understanding their different culture is very important and significant in intercultural communication, and the thesis is just one part. The author believes the study of this field will go on and will acquire more achievements.。

English:In terms of differences between Chinese and Western wedding cultures, there are several notable distinctions. A key aspect is the concept of the wedding ceremony itself - in Western culture, the focus is often on the couple exchanging vows and rings in a church setting, whereas in Chinese culture, the emphasis is on elaborate traditions and rituals that symbolize family values and respect for ancestors. Additionally, the role of family and guests differs significantly between the two cultures. In Western weddings, the emphasis is on the couple and their love, with an emphasis on personal expression and individuality. On the other hand, Chinese weddings are often seen as a union not just between two individuals, but between two families, with an emphasis on honoring and respecting one's elders. The attire worn by the bride and groom also differs - Western brides typically wear white gowns symbolizing purity and innocence, while Chinese brides often opt for vibrant red dresses symbolizing luck and happiness. Furthermore, the overall atmosphere of the two types of weddings can also vary greatly - Western weddings tend to be more intimate and emotional, whileChinese weddings are often grand and festive celebrations involving many guests and elaborate banquets. Despite these differences, both Chinese and Western wedding cultures share a common goal of celebrating love and commitment between two people.

It is for celebrating the beginning of a marriage. Each country and each nation has their own traditional wedding. Wedding is the most important ceremony in our whole life. There are three influential wedding in the world: Confucianism wedding; Hindu wedding and Christian wedding. Confucianism wedding is a traditional wedding of China and the Christian wedding is a tradition wedding of America. In Christianity, there is a clear significance of marriage. It is said that marriage is a decree from God. In my opinion, marriage is a new life for people who love their lovers and the wedding is a ceremony for people to verify their sweet affection.1.2 The Origin of Chinese WeddingThe origin of Chinese wedding is from a myth and legend. It is said that in remote antiquity, there was likely to be some heavy flooding, almost all animals and human died except Nuwa and Fuxi. The God of Venus who is an immortal of Chinese ancient mythology asked them to get married to reproduce human, but both of them disagreed with this because they were brother and sister. However, if they didn’t get married, mankind would deracinate. At the same time, Nuwa and Fuxi came up with a method that if they can connect the bamboos which were cut down and then they would get married. It was unexpected that those bamboos were connected. But they were still not willing to marry each other. Therefore, they thought out another way that if two millstones which rolled down from two mountains rolled together and then they would get married. Sure enough, the two millstones rolled together. But they also didn’t want to get married. Finally, Nuwa figured out a way that Nuwa ran first and then if Fuxi caught up with Nuwa they would get married. However Fuxi can’tovertake Nuwa. Fuxi met a turtle afterwards and the turtle taught him that he can run oppositely to catch up with Nuwa. Fuxi did what the turtle told him and he overtook Nuwa eventually. In the end, they got married. Chinese wedding was taking shape.1.3 The Origin of American WeddingWhen mentioning the origin of American wedding, we must first talk about the origin of Western wedding because American culture is influenced by Western cultures. The origin of western wedding is a legend. It is from the Bible of Christianity. It is said that God created world in seven days. Jehovah God made a man named Adam with mud at the sixth days and blew some breath to him. Then Adam was alive suddenly. Jehovah God built the Garden of Eden and asked Adam not to eat the fruitages of wisdom. Afterwards, Jehovah God wanted to make a spouse to help Adam, so he made a woman called Eve with one of Adam’s rib. Since then Adam and Eve lived in the Garden of Eden happily. According to the original idea of Bible, that era is the golden age of human. However they couldn’t resist the lure from a snake and they ate the forbidden fruits. They understood the shame and they began to love each other. Ultimately Jehovah God realized that both of them went against with his order. Jehovah God was very angry and dislodged them from the Garden of Eden. Since then there had appeared the ethnic group with love, enmity and warfare. From the discrimination mentioned above, people in primitive times got married with no more love and responsibility. With the development of social productivity and the perfection of political system, marriage had appeared. Western wedding had taken shape progressively.ⅡThe Comparison of Wedding Between Chinese and American Cultures2.1 The Differences of Costume in Chinese and American WeddingIt is obvious that costume in Chinese wedding and costume in American wedding is as different as chalk and cheese. For example, the color and the style of Chinese wedding costumes are different from American’s. Now let me demonstrate this contention.2.1.1 Costume in Chinese WeddingAt the mention of the costume in Chinese wedding, we have to date back to ancient China. In Zhou Dynasty, people thought that the color of black represented the universe. Therefore, the tone of their costumes at the wedding is black with a little crimson. It’s very solemn and simplicity. It is said that in Qin Dynasty, the color of wedding gowns is as same as that in Zhou Dynasty. In Han Dynasty, the color of the wedding dress is like that in Zhou and Qin Dynasty. But there are also some differences. The bridegroom and the bride needed to wear the warped shoes and the bride had to adorn the hairpin to comb up her hair. In Sui and Tang Dynasty, the style of wedding gowns is as same as that previously. But the tone of the costumes had changed a lot. The bridegroom wore crimson clothes and the bride wore cyan clothes. It seems very jubilant and enthusiastic. In Ming Dynasty, Ming emperor Zhu Yuanzhang made a new institution. When the common people got married, the bridegroom can wear the fake official robe like an officer, the bride can wear a phoenix coronet on her head and wear a red long dress and also wear a robe of rank on her shoulders. It just looks like an empress. Besides, before the bride get into the bridal sedan chair she must wear the red veil to cover her head and embroidered shoes on her feet. The tone of all clothes at the wedding is red during that time. The style and tone of wedding gowns in Ming Dynasty is from generation to generation. Sincethen this kind of wedding gowns has been used for more than 500 years. Nowadays at some traditional weddings, there usually appear phoenix coronet and official robes. In Qing Dynasty, the bridegroom usually wore a skullcap, a long gown and a mandarin jacket like a Manchu. And except phoenix coronet and robes of rank, the bride also wore a long red dress with an embroidered gown. In my opinion, the most beautiful wedding costume is Ming’s style. It is not only enthusiastic but also dazzling and charming. Besides, I think all the costumes in each dynasty are also treasures to show about the traditional culture of China.2.1.2 Costume in American WeddingThe bride in America always wears a wedding dress and the bridegroom wears western-style clothes. It is unbelievable that there are only 200 years for brides to wear white wedding dress(吴国华,2006). The wedding dress was a ceremony dress of Catholic. When people got married they must accept the prayer or the blessing from priest because western people thought that the marriage was an order from God and the priest is envoy of God to convey the order. Therefore, the bride had to wear the ceremony dress of Catholic to express that she was pure and honest. However before 19 centuries, the style and tone of the bride wedding dress weren’t unified. Some of brides wore flaxen long dress, and some of them wore blue long dress, others wore pink long dress with some jewels on it. In 1840 Victoria wore an 18 feet white wedding dress and was unfolded before everyone’s eyes, and all people were fascinated by the white wedding dress(吴国华,2006). Therefore white wedding dress played an important role in wedding dress of western countries. In addition, the bride had to wear a veil to cover her face. It is because that only in this way can they keep away from the demon. Also it is said that the bridegroom needed to hold a sword on his right side formerly because of dueling with the guy who wanted to rend the bride away from him. Generally, the traditional costumes of American wedding lay stress on the four key points, ”new”; ”old”; ”borrowed” and ”blue”. The”new” means the new white wedding dress, which signifies the beginning of new life. The “old” isthe old veil. It means unforgettable love and kindness of the bride’s parents. The “borrowed”is the handkerchief borrowed from the bride’s best friend to show the precious friendship. The “blue”is the blue satin which means sincere love of the newlyweds. Through discovering the costume in American wedding(潘文晋,2008), we can understand that the features of western culture are very interesting and historic.2.2 The Differences of Ceremony in Chinese and American WeddingThe ceremony in Chinese and American wedding is different from each other absolutely. In general, ceremony in Chinese wedding is quite lively and jubilant; on the contrary, the ceremony in American wedding is very quiet and holy. I will refer to some details.2.2.1 Ceremony in Chinese WeddingThe wedding ceremony is the most important part in wedding. In our country, when the bridegroom picks up the bride from the bride’s house, it always besets with difficulties. For example, the family of the bride will not let the bridegroom enter the house except that the bridegroom gives them red paper containing money as a gift; after the bridegroom get into the house, the family of the bride will hide the shoes of the bride in order to stop the bride going out with the bridegroom. And then when they come out of the house, the bride has to step over a brazier and a saddle, which means booming and safe. After that they will get to the bridegroom’s house where a wedding ceremony will be held. The toastmaster of wedding ceremony is always a matchmaker of the newly-weds. In ancient China, people always stood for the theory that man is an integral part of nature. Thus there are three major ceremonies in wedding ceremony. First, the newly-weds kowtow to the heaven and earth; second, they will kowtow to their parents; thirdly, they willkowtow to each other. It means that newly-weds get the permission of getting married from god and parents. And then the bridegroom and the bride give a cup of tea to their parents. After that their parents also give red packets to them. In the end, the bride gets into the bridal chamber and the bridegroom stays at the banquet to entertain guests with food and liquor and drinks a toast to all of guests. At the end of the ceremony, the best friends of the newly-weds stay and celebrate wedding in bridal chamber. The steps of Chinese wedding ceremony are extremely complex, however, the ceremony is also lively and jubilant.2.2.2 Ceremony in American WeddingIn American wedding, the ceremony is always quiet and holy. There aren’t so many steps for the newly-weds when they are getting married. In America, wedding ceremonies are always held in churches. At the wedding day, all friends and families of the bridegroom and the bride are invited to the wedding. With the music starts, the bride and her father will walk into the church hand in hand. And then the ceremony starts. The pastor who is the toastmaster of wedding starts to officiate at a marriage. He will tell the significance of marriage to everybody in the church. According to the traditional habitude, the pastor will let the bride and the bridegroom to promise to each other, “no matter good or bad it is, rich or poor it is, weak or healthy we are, I swear I will love you and cherish you until I die.”Then the bridegroom will kiss the bride and they exchange the wedding rings. After that, there will be a big feast and the type of food in the feast is depended on the favor of the bride and her families. There are so many prismatic wedding cakes in the corner. Traditionally, the bridegroom and the bride will hold the knife together and cut cakes. This is the first thing they do together. It indicates one thing that since then they will live happily and sweet. And they will eat cakes with guests. After eating, women who don’t get married get together to wait for the bride throw the bouquet of flowers to them and the woman who catches the bouquet will get married next. Because they think that the bouquet of flowers means happiness. After throwing the bouquet, thebride will throw the garter and the man who catches the garter will marry a beautiful girl soon. Next, all guests throw rice to the bridegroom and the bride because it expresses the best wishes to them(刘利,2011). At the end of the ceremony, the bridegroom and the bride will drive the wedding car to make a wedding trip. Going on a honeymoon is a romantic thing. This activity will help the newly-weds enhance their sweet and happy life.2.3 The Differences of Preparation before Chinese and American WeddingThere are so many differences in preparation before Chinese and American weddings. I think the major reason of forming these differences is different concepts between Chinese and American people. In addition, the way of thought is another one of reasons.2.3.1 Preparation before Chinese WeddingInfluenced by Confucianism, the process of preparations in Chinese wedding is very complex. There is a specific process called “three letters and six rites”. “Three letters” include the letters of appointment, present, escorting; and “six rites”mean proposing a marriage, asking name, divination of the auspicious day, sending bride-price to bride’s home, selecting the date of wedding and greeting bride(林琳,2010). In detail, first of all, the bridegroom asks the matchmaker to propose marriage to the bride. Then when matchmaker arrives at the bride’s home, she will ask the name and date of birth of bride and divine whether it is auspicious or not. Next, both of newly-weds’ families get together to discuss the date of wedding and then the bridegroom will send the bride-price to bride’s home, and then they will select the date of wedding and at that day, the bridegroom goes to the bride’ s home to escort her back to the wedding. Greeting bride is the most important link of the preparation. After the process of greeting, the bride marries the bridegroom formally. From the first part of six rites, the bridegroom and the bride have little communication with each other, almost all arrangements and decisions are decided by their parents and the matchmaker plays an important role in communicating with two families. It reflects that Chinese people influenced by Confucianism deeply because Confucianism is a core of thought in each dynasty and it is a direction of Chinese behavior(贾剑秋,2003). And it advocates obeying the order of parents and following the advice of matchmaker. Nowadays, most of Chinese go with the tradition. At the present, except these steps people also have to decide a place to hold the wedding ceremony before the wedding. In addition, the bride and bridegroom will pack the wedding candies and wedding cigarettes for the families and guests who take part in their wedding ceremony.2.3.2 Preparation before American WeddingThe preparation of American wedding is much simpler than Chinese wedding. According to the traditional customs, there are some necessary procedures. First of all, when people want to get married, they always publish this information on newspapers. The name of the bridegroom, the bride and their parents and the date of wedding will be written on that announcement. And then the bridegroom and the bride will send wedding cards to their families and friends. Before the wedding ceremony, the bridegroom and the bride will first get engaged. At that time the bridegroom and the bride need to exchange the engagement rings. This custom makes us to date back to final stage of primitive society. When the people who lived in the primitive tribe wanted to get married, two of the newly-weds always exchanged the garland to ensure the combination of their souls. And this custom has passed down from generation to generation. Then the newly-weds will arrange the layout at the church and hold some bachelor party with their friends to celebrate finishing their single lives. In America, the bridegroom and the bride are free to communicate with each other before they hold the wedding ceremony. They believe in the freedom of marriage. When they love each other and decide to get married, they tell their parents about that and discuss allthings of wedding. And then the man can take the initiative in a proposal of marriage to the lady. The man holds roses and ring and then kneels to the lady and ask her”will you marry me?” The lady must say”yes” with a happy smile. That’s the most romantic part. Obviously, the preparation before American wedding is very simple, dreamlike and romantic.2.4 The Differences of Music in Chinese and American Wedding 2.4.1 Music in Chinese and American WeddingThere are lots of differences between music in Chinese wedding and that in American wedding. In China, the traditional wedding music is very resonant and overwhelming. The main instruments are suona horns and trumpets. These instruments are very popular in Chinese wedding because of the loud and sonorous voice. However, the music in American wedding is different from Chinese wedding music. The traditional American wedding music is soft and soothing. This kind of music can keep the solemn and harmonious atmosphere in churches. At the same time, it is to pay people’s respects to gods.Ⅲ The Reasons of Forming These Differences3.1 The Difference of Thought Patterns Between Chinese and American CulturesDifferent cultures influence different people. In China, the Chinese people are influenced by Confucianism and the system of feudal society, which both put great emphasis on filial piety. At ancient times, when it is time for people to get married, their parents always make decisions for them. Of course they act on the orders of their parents. When their parents select an appropriate mate, the parents will ask a matchmaker to serve as a link between two young people who are ready to get married. This is the traditional thought pattern of marriage in China. The young people don’t have the freedom to choose their own marriage partners. They must listen to their parents and the matchmaker. The purpose of getting married is to produce a male heir to carry on the family line and it is responsibility and duty for the male to get married. The newly-weds may don’t know each other and they even never meet each other before they get married. In addition, the wife must honor her husband and comply with her husband’s wishes. And all husbands at that time can take concubines. It reflects the society of the male sovereignty in China. In America, it is different from China. American always advocates independence and freedom. The American people are independent and equal in their families. Because of the influence of Christianity, American believes that marriage is a decree from God(潘文晋,2008). The marriage is based on being in love with each other and being honest. America people always have the freedom to choose their own marriage partners. So they can date whoever they like. They have right to make decisions of making friends, dating and getting married. And after getting married, the wife has rights to do anything because everyone is equal. Therefore, in America, the man can only marry on woman. If he wants to marry another lady, he should offer divorce agreement.3.2 The Difference of Philosophy and Values Between Chinese and American CulturesThe ability of social intercourse connects with the philosophy and values. Every culture has it own philosophical system. This system can help people to differentiate between good and evil. In other words, it is moral outlook and code of conduct. Influenced by Li Ji, which is a book of rites, Chinese people are modest, prudent, polite and traditional. Therefore the Chinese wedding follows Confucianism and the steps of wedding are very complex and extravagant. However, American people uphold egotism extremely, so the American wedding is independent and simple.3.3 The Difference of Religious Belief between Chinese and AmericanIn China, most of Chinese people believe in Confucianism and Taoism. Chinese people always advocate a view that human beings are an integral part of nature and regard the universe as a mother of everything of earth. Therefore, the first part of a wedding ceremony is that the newly-weds kowtow to the heaven and earth. They think that they get the permission to get married from the universe. However, in America, American people profess a belief in Christianity. Most of American people think that marriage is a decree from God and the priests are envoys of God. Thus they always hold a wedding ceremony in a Christian church and let a priest to take charge of the wedding ceremony.Ⅳ ConclusionNowadays, there are more opportunities for Chinese to go abroad and Chinese people have more communication with American people. The numbers of getting married between Chinese and American are rapidly increased recently. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the different customs of Chinese and American wedding. Wedding is a phenomenon of culture. As an important part of culture, it is an important part in our life too. However, there are many kinds of wedding in every country. With the development of society and the influence of globalization, wedding in each country has changed a lot. The article talks about the differences of wedding costumes, wedding ceremony, preparation of wedding and wedding music. And then analyze the differences of thought pattern, philosophy and values and religion belief between Chinese and American cultures, which are the reasons of forming those differences mentioned above. The differences of cultures between China and America are worthwhile for us to respect and study. Through the research and introduction, we can do better in the intercultural communication and the cross-cultural transmission. We must contain the similarities and differences, and absorb what is good and reject what is bad. It can help China to be a stronger country in the world.AcknowledgementsI would like to extend my profound appreciation to my tutor Ms Zheng Yi who encouraged me to pursue this topic in the first place, for her guidance and patience, for the time and effort she spent in helping the accomplishment of this thesis.
Weddings are a significant milestone in both Western and Chinese cultures, but the way they are celebrated can differ greatly. In Western weddings, the ceremony usually takes place in a church or other religious setting, while Chinese weddings often take place in a banquet hall or hotel. Western brides typically wear a white wedding dress, while Chinese brides wear a red qipao or other traditional dress.Another difference is the role of the bridesmaids and groomsmen. In Western weddings, they usually stand beside the bride and groom during the ceremony and participate in the reception. In Chinese weddings, the bridesmaids and groomsmen are responsible for playing games and pranks on the newlyweds during the reception. One similarity between the two cultures is the exchangeof rings. Both Western and Chinese weddings involve the exchange of wedding rings as a symbol of the couple's commitment to each other. Another similarity is the importance of the wedding banquet. In both cultures, the wedding banquet is a time for family and friends to come together and celebrate the newlyweds.

Goody),就以人口学的方法,写成了《欧洲家庭和婚姻的发展》(The Development of the Family and Marriage in Europe)一书。

A Comparison of the Wedding Culture between China and Western Countries in Modern Times IntroductionThe 21st century is dominated by science and technology, which makes the whole world develop quite rapidly. With the constantly increasing economic globalization and international exchange, the cultures of different regions are gradually spread and fused, such as the wedding cultures of China and Western Countries. It is clear that Chinese wedding and Western wedding differ from each other in many aspects: custom, ceremony procedures, styles and dress, marriage media and place. This thesis discusses the differences between Chinese and Western wedding cultures. It is extremely important to understand the different cultures between China and Western countries, which will help us to correctly understand the words and deeds of Westerners in the intercultural communication, fully understand each other, and respect each other's customs so as to get the best effect of communication.1. Chinese and Western Different Wedding Cultures1.1 Custom1.1.1 Three Papers and Six EtiquettesAccording to Chinese wedding customs, the first etiquette is Three Papers and Six Etiquettes, which is as important as the engagement at Western wedding.Three Papers consists of the paper of engagement, the list paper of the presents to the bride’s and the paper of fetching the bride. They are going to be used on the day of engagement, the bridegroom’s giving the presents of marriage to the bride’s an d going and fetching the bride.Six Etiquettes includes asking for engagement, asking for the name and births of the newlyweds, showing some presents for engagement to the bride’s, giving the presents of marriage to the bride’s, choosing a good date for the wedding and going and fetching the br ide on the day of the wedding. All these etiquettes must be completely in proper order before thewedding, and then the formal wedding can be held.1.1.2 EngagementIn Western countries, people always engage first and then they can hold the formal wedding. Many etiquettes and symbols need to be paid much attention to, especially the diamond ring at the engagement ceremony. Diamond is considered as the best symbol of forever love. The diamond is produced by heat energy and press, which makes it the hardest material discovered by human beings so far. Thus, the bridegroom must send a diamond ring to his bride to show his promise of forever unchanged love at their engagement ceremony. 1.1.3 Other Etiquettes and CustomsEtiquettes and Customs at the Chinese WeddingIn China, the parents always prepare some dowry for their daughter. The dowry means a good wish for their rich and nice life. At the bridegroom’s home, there are also many things to be prepared. At the same time the bridegroom must prepare some money packaged in red paper bags to thank some people on the day of the wedding, such as his bride’s brother and people who helped him. People think the money in a red paper bag from the bridegroom will bring them good luck and nice life.Etiquettes and Customs at the Western Wedding“Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue, and a Silver Sixpence in Her Shoe”.Each item in this poem represents a good-luck taken for the bride. If she carries all of them on her wedding day, her marriage will be happy. “Something old” symbolizes continuity with the bride's family and the past. “Something new”means optimism and hope for the bride's new life ahead. “Something borrowed”is usually an item from a happily married friend or family member, whose good fortune in marriage is supposed to carry over to the new bride. The borrowed item also reminds the bride that she can depend on her friends and family. “Something Blue”dates from the ancient Rome time, brides wore blue to symbolize love, modesty, and fidelity, as evidenced in proverbs like “Marry in blue, lover be true”. And finally, a silver sixpence dates back to a Scottish customs of a groom putting a silver coin under his foot for good luck, today it represents wealth and financial security.1.1.4 TaboosTaboos at the Chinese WeddingOn the day of the wedding, people can’t say bad words. People say it will bring something bad if they don’t follow the customs. Everything prepared for the wedding must be in pairs. When the bride arrives at the b ridegroom’s, she can’t touch the threshold when she goes across, or she will bring bad luck. The pregnant women and the women who lose a parent or her husband recently can’t attend the wedding, and they can not touch the bride’s new clothes and all of the items in the bridal chamber. If they did this, she had to crawl through the new couple’s unmarried brother’s legs before she can go out.Taboos at the Western WeddingThere are also many taboos at the Western wedding, especially concerning the bride’s wedding dress. White wedding dress must not be matched with red shoes, because red shoes means to jump into the fire pit. Red flower, red belt and other red things mustn’t be matched with white dress, either, since white symbolizes pure while red is the opposite. White wedding dress should match white, golden or silver shoes. The bride must cover her face with a veil at the ceremony, for it is not only a decoration but also representing a dividing line, and it can’t be exposed by other people except the bridegroom. The bridegroom always stands on the right of his bride, in order to avoid others from grabbing his bride away. When the new couple goes back to their bridal chamber, the bridegroom must hug the bride into the house and put her on the bed, avoiding her getting into the house with her left foot first, for they think that may bring bad luck to the new family. 1.2 Ceremony ProceduresCeremony Procedures at the Chinese WeddingThere is a certain order in Chinese wedding. Generally speaking, the whole process of the wedding includes a series of details.( 1 ) Going and Fetching the BrideOn the day of the formal wedding, the bride is dressed up by the elders at her home, waiting for the bridegroom. When the bridegroom meets his bride, they are to say goodbye tothe bride‘s family members after worshipping the bride’s ancestors. They bow down before her parents, after which the newlyweds can set off after the bride’s mothe r drapes kerchief over for her.( 2 ) Performing the Formal Wedding CeremonyIn China, people will select a good date very carefully for a big event, especially for one’s marriage or death, for there are many taboos to avoid and they think a good date may bring good luck. Usually, they consult professional Mr. Fengshui(The one who studies the geomantic omen professionally) for advice.People paste congratulatory couplets and large red Chinese character on the doorframes and walls. And they also lay out red blanket on the ground. The bride and bridegroom will be led across the red blanket, the colorful paper strips and one kind of spray stuff will be setting off above the new couple’s heads. They walk shoulder by shoulder to the front of their parents who have already sat in a row of chairs at the end of the blanket. They bow down before their parents three times, and then they bow to each other three times, too. After that they formally become a couple.( 3 ) Disturbing the NuptialAfter the wedding feast, some of their close friends will plan to make fun of the new couple in their bridal chamber, and usually they play games. The new couple can’t have a rest until all the friends stop to left, and the whole wedding ends.( 4 ) Going back to the Bride’s Three Days LatterOn the third day after the marriage, the bride must go back to her parents with her husband with roasted meat and some other gifts. There, they worship her ancestors again, and they can even stay for a period of time before they return their own home.Ceremony Procedures at the Western WeddingMost Westerners are Christians, so Western wedding is always held in the church, presided by the priest. On the day of the wedding, the new couple’s relatives and friends gather at the church to celebrate their wedding and to be the witnesses of their marriage. As the ceremony begins, the bridegroom and his groomsmen stand with the priest, facing the audience. Music signals the entrance of the bridesmaids, followed by the beautiful bride, and the bride will be led into the church by her father. Then the priest will ask the new coupleand all people to present several questions one by one, beginning with the bridegroom, and then they give their promises of marriage to each other “for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health.” After that they can exchange their rings and kiss each other. Finally, the priest will declare their marriage, which means the end of the wedding.1.3 Styles and DressA Chinese wedding is a very special occasion filled with bright red color everywhere. That's because red represents happiness and prosperity, and also it is a symbol of good luck, indicates the days after marriage is booming.Western wedding trends to be romantic. The whole wedding is full of romantic atmosphere. The bride usually wears a beautiful, long white wedding dress, because white means jubilation in the West. The bridegroom wears a formal suit or tuxedo. For example, in the Andaman Islands, white was the representative of the status change. Traditional white wedding dress was the privilege of nobility in the early days. In Liberia times, most of the brides can only wear the traditional national costumes, and only the upper class can wear white dress at the wedding, which was the symbol of power and identity. Until modern times, after the privilege of nobility disappears the bride can wear white wedding dress ordinarily. 1.4 Marriage MediaIn Chinese wedding, matchmaker is the compere of the wedding. Listening to matchmaker’s proposals is the rule that people must abide by. They usually were women. The bride and bridegroom were directed by her to finish the ceremony. But in Christian’s opinions, wedding ceremony is considered as an important way to get god’s save and wedding ceremony is a very important part of marriage. Priest plays an essential role in it. And marriage is not valid, unless the ceremony is hosted by priest.1.5 PlaceChinese wedding is usually held in the bridegroom's house. The bride and bridegroom worship the heaven, the earth, their parents and each other in the hall of the house. The relatives and friends have dinner in the courtyard. Most of the Westerners are Christians and they believe in God and regard him as the only master of the universe, so Western wedding takes place in church.2. The Reasons for Differences2.1 Social SystemsChina's emperors treat themselves as the Son of Heaven, but “No one is born noble.”Ancient China's political system is Centralized system that the autocratic centralization of power as the core. Despotic centralized system in China continuities 2000 years, and it had a profound impact on the China's reunification and development. While in the West, the emperor and his people are in accordance with the sanctity of contracts under the name of God, and the emperor in accordance with God's will to control the country.2.2 Thought PatternsChinese ThoughtsChinese people are always more conservative, and they like to gather together enjoying the jollification and they have a relatively rigid mind. Thus there is not much change in the wedding customs in the thousands of years’ Chinese history. Many traditional wedding customs and etiquettes remain alive. And the Chinese people’s character of loving jollification is fully manifested in the Chinese traditional complicated wedding ceremony. In the end of the wedding, the couple will be disturbed by friends and family in their bridal chamber, and people think that the more serious the new couple is disturbed, the happier they will be in their life. Therefore, their friends and family use various methods to make things difficult for the bride and the bridegroom.Westerner’s ThoughtsWestern people are more open-minded, and their requirement for the wedding is relatively lower. The climax of their wedding is in the church. With the sacred “Wedding M arch”, th e bride is led by her father with a bouquet of roses in her hand stepping onto the red carpet, walking slowly to the bridegroom. The bride's father will put her daughter's hands in the hand of the bridegroom, entrusting her daughter's life to him. There sounds their oath in the sacred church and both the bridegroom and the bride exchange their marriage rings. After the priest declared the marriage, the bride and the bridegroom may go to the wedding banquet or to take their honeymoon without the complex etiquettes of the Chinese traditionalweddings.2.3 Value OrientationChinese Value OrientationP eople’s marriage is relatively stable because Chinese people always consider marriage as one of the most important things in one’s life. They choose it carefully, and once they decide to get married it will be not easy to change. And as Chinese people always regard marriage as something serious as well as moral; they think it’s immoral to destroy other’s marriage.Chinese people’s marriage is much more a rational choice and it is doubtful how much love there is in such a rational choice of marriage. Therefore, the Chinese people's marriage is much less roma ntic than the Western people’s. Of course, Chinese people have love, too. But there is no inevitable connection between love and marriage. Love and marriage are two entirely different matters, Chinese people can marry someone they love or they do not love. Westerner’s Value OrientationWesterners believe that marriage is purely a private matter, and no one can interfere. They have the right to choose a favorite person to live together, and they will have a second choice once they find the existing marriage is a mistake. It can be said that the Westerners’ marriage is in more need of love, and love is the basis of marriage. What’s why there are the categories of “Golden Marriage”,”Silver Marriage” and "Honeymoon", which look so romantic. In the Western countries, love is the most sacred part of human being’s emotion, which can never be sullied. And this makes it as sacred and absolute as the religious idols. At the same time, it is the extreme emotion of human beings. That’s why they make a life promi se to each other at the wedding and exchange the diamond rings to witness their love.2.4 Religious ViewsChinese Religion and Its Influence on the Wedding CustomsIn China, the traditional moral and religious beliefs are always the most important cornerstone of marriage and stable family. The most popular religion in China is Buddhism whose teachings greatly influence people’s thought. This is reflected in Chinese customs, such as the wedding customs. The Buddhism teaches the common people to enjoy a reasonable arrangement of a good secular life, and to be good people. For example, they prepare things for the wedding in pairs, and they decorate the whole wedding with red items that means goodness. Therefore, Chinese people pay much attention to the etiquettes at the wedding, they stress much and they have many taboos. The Buddhism also tells people to respect the heaven, the earth, the King, their parents and the persons who teach them, that’s why Chinese people must bow down before them at the wedding ceremony. At the same time, religion teaches people how to be a good wife or husband, how they should respect their elders and grow their kids, and the way of making a harmony marriage. Thus, Chinese people always treat marriage as one of the most important things in one’s life, and they can keep a steady family.Western Religion and Its Influence on the Wedding CustomsMost of the Westerners are Christians, they believe in God as the only master of the universe. Christians pay serious attention to marriage. According to the Bible, the Christians have two views: firstly, marriage is sacred, because the origin of marriage is the creation of god himself; secondly, marriage should insist on the principle of monogamy, that’s why God created Eve for Adam. Christians traditionally believe that the premise of divorce is one of the couple committed the crimes of lascivious or one leave voluntarily for different believes, mentioned in the Bible.3. The Measures of blending Chinese and Western Wedding Cultures3.1 Changing Teachers’ Way of Thinking and Improving Teaching MethodsIn China's current education system, foreign language teaching has only been carried out in the classroom and teachers play a leading role. If the teachers will only focus on grammar and vocabulary teaching, the students can not learn the practical application of language, but lack of cross-cultural communication capabilities. Therefore, teachers must be taught to change their concepts, practical understanding of the importance of cross-cultural communicative competence. For a long time, the teaching of English in universities are placed emphasis on teaching knowledge of the language at the expense of cross-cultural communication abilities. In order to change this situation, we must improve teaching methods, both in the aspects of quantitative and qualitative to control the culture of teaching in classroom, and to make fulluse of modern teaching methods to mobilize the enthusiasm of students, teacher can let students to play the bridegroom and the bride in the wedding ceremony. In addition, we must make the new content and language knowledge in close contact, and communication practice must be closely integrated with the language.3.2 Emphasizing on Non-verbal Communication AbilityNon-verbal communication is also an important means of communication, referring to a particular context of using of non-verbal behavior in the process of information exchange and understanding the knowledge. They are not really the units of language, but sometimes it was able to make people communicate better in culture than the language itself. Some specific non-verbal behavior often represents a specific meaning, which must pay attention to cross-cultural communication. To know more about non-verbal behavior is good for understanding the wedding cultures, such as the ceremony procedures.3.3 Extensive Contact with Western Culture MaterialsPeople should make good use of their leisure time reading the West English literary works, newspapers, magazines and current affairs comments and other materials to learn wedding culture and improve cross-cultural communicative competence. In addition, people can go to the English corner to discuss the wedding culture.ConclusionMarriage is an important part of social life, we can make the wedding culture as a breakthrough point to know more about the differences between Chinese and Western culture. In the Chinese and Western weddings, the custom, ceremony procedures, styles and dress, marriage media and place are different and there are many reasons causing the differences such as social system, thought pattern, value orientation and religious views. It is extremely important to know and understand the differences between them, so that we can understand the words and deeds of Westerners correctly and respect each other's customs in the communication, and then we can get the best effect of communication. In conclusion, the Western and Chinese culture is a vast field for Chinese and English learners to explore and study. We still have a long way to understand it deeply.References[1] JiaYuxin.Intercultural Communication Research [M]. Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press, 1997[2] Linell Davis.
Chinese and Western weddings have their own unique traditions and customs, reflecting the cultural differences between the East and the West. In this essay, we will explore the differences between Chinese and Western weddings.First and foremost, the attire worn by the bride and groom is one of the most noticeable differences between Chinese and Western weddings. In a Chinese wedding, the bride typically wears a traditional red qipao or cheongsam, symbolizing good luck and happiness. The groom wears a black suit with a red tie or a traditional tang suit. In contrast, Western brides usually wear a white wedding gown, symbolizing purity and innocence, while the groom wears a tuxedo or suit.Secondly, the ceremony itself is quite different in Chinese and Western weddings. In a Chinese wedding, the ceremony is usually a blend of traditional rituals, such as the tea ceremony, where the newlyweds serve tea to their parents as a sign of respect and gratitude. In a Western wedding, the ceremony is often held in a church or a secular venue, with the exchange of vows and rings being the focal point.Another noticeable difference is the guest list and seating arrangements. In Chinese weddings, it is common to invite a large number of guests, including distant relatives and acquaintances. Seating arrangements are usually based on hierarchy, with the most important guests seated closest to the bride and groom. In Western weddings, the guest list is usually smaller and more intimate, with close family and friends being invited. Seating is often more casual, with guests free to sit wherever they choose. In terms of the reception, Chinese and Western weddings also have distinct differences. In a Chinese wedding, the reception often includes a lavish banquet with multiple courses of traditional Chinese dishes. There may also be entertainment such as lion dances or traditional music performances. In a Western wedding, the reception usually includes a sit-down meal followed by dancing and celebrations. The cutting of the wedding cake is a common tradition in Western weddings, symbolizing the couple's first task together as a married couple.Lastly, the symbolism and customs associated with Chinese and Western weddings differ as well. In Chinese weddings, the color red is considered auspicious and is often used in decorations and attire. Symbolic items such as the doublehappiness character and dragon and phoenix motifs are also common. In Western weddings, traditions such as throwing the bouquet and garter, the first dance, and the honeymoon are all part of the celebration. In conclusion, while Chinese and Western weddings share the same ultimate goal of uniting two people in marriage, the traditions and customs surrounding these ceremonies are distinct and reflective of the respective cultures. From attire and ceremonies to guest lists and receptions, Chinese and Western weddings showcase the unique customs and beliefs of their cultures. Ultimately, both types of weddings are a beautiful celebration of love and commitment, no matter the cultural differences.。

在西方,婚礼时有旧(Something Old)、新(Something New)、借(Something Borrowed )、蓝(Something Blue)等习俗。
