2020年上学期《高级阅读(二)》期末考试试卷课程名称:1.(阅读理解)Reading Comprehension (30%, 2×15) Passage One Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage. In giving a business presentation, many speakers think that if their idea is strong, their audience will get it readily. They feel discouraged when the audience is unable to understand their presentations. That happens a lot especially when technical experts are invited to make a product presentation to a group of users. What can we do to make a business presentation easier to understand? In my view, good presentations have always been simple and visual. In an effective business presentation, the fewer the points, the better the message gets passed on. You focus on the depth of coverage instead of the width of coverage. Additionally, you make your ideas visual and relevant, so the message is understood better and remembered longer. Great business presenters relate their ideas and concepts to their audience by using simple, powerful diagrams instead of relying on text-based slides. In fact, drawing diagrams forces a presenter to make the idea clear even at the preparation. It is impossible to draw a diagram when you are not clear about an idea. When your idea is clear, it is easier to transfer it. Most audiences understand a diagram faster and remember it longer. This possibly explains why most of the memorable presentations have been visual in nature.(本题10.0分)1.(单选题)Many speakers believe that the stronger their idea______.(本题2.0分)A.the more powerful their speech will beB. the more meaningful their speech will beC. the more easily the audience will understand itD.the harder the audience will find it to follow答案:C.解析:无.2.(单选题)Why are you advised to give fewer points in your presentation?(本题2.0分)A.To pass on the messages better.B.To avoid wasting too much time.C.To allow audience to take notes.D. Blue Jeans Company was established in October 2012 and operates as a partnership between Elena Horowitz and James Foster. In fact, it began in Elena’s basement when they sold jeans to friends. And now the company has grown to have its own online store, relationships with suppliers in Alisa, and local factories. The company has had its revenues double every two months. For our day-to-day operations, Blue Jeans Company has established several key relationships and we can easily expand our production when the demand for our goods increases. We obtain the best organic cotton from two suppliers, one located in Turkey and the other in Japan, which means that their supplies are produced without the use of any chemicals. Once t he shipment arrives in the US, it’ll be routed to our production and shipping partner in Los Angeles. We work closely with our partner to ensure quality through regular checks. It is also where the products will ship out. Our office is located on 2029 Century Park East where all staff work together, handling all online order processing and ensuring the purchase and delivery of the products run smoothly. Falls are the number one cause of death to old people athome. Most old people can live safely at home if they make a few changes. Falls are common as people are getting older. Up to half of home accidents could be prevented by making some very simple changes. Here are a few suggestions: Mark trouble spots with bright tapes. The first and last steps on stairs are usually high-risk accident areas. Applying bright tapes and using bright light in these areas would make these spots easier to see. Put grab bars (扶手) in the bathroom.A large number of falls occur in the bathroom. This is unfortunate because it’s easy to make the area from accidents. Putting grab bars in the bathroom gives people something to hang on to. Invest in a personal alarm. A personal alarm can be started if a person falls or otherwise gets in trouble.

2013-1In an essay entitled “Making It in America”, the author Adam Davidson relates a joke from cotton country about just how much a modern textile mill has been automated: The average mill has only two employees today,” a man and a dog. The man is there to feed the dog and the dog is there to keep the man away from the machines.”

”Davidson’s article is one of a number of pieces that have recently appeared making the point that the reason we have such stubbornly high unemployment and declining middle-class incomes today is also because of the advances in both globalization and the information technology revolution, which are more rapidly than ever replacing labor with machines or foreign workers.

2012届高考英语二轮专题总复习阅读理解汇总〔二〕1Photos that you might have found down the back of your sofa are now big business! In 2005, the American artist Richard Prince’s photograph of a photograph, Untitled (Cowboy), was sold for $ 1, 248, 000.Prince is certainly not the only contemporary artist to have worked with so-called “found photographs〞—a loose term given to everything from discarded(丢弃的) prints discovered in a junk shop to old advertisements or amateur photographs from a stranger’s family album. The German artist Joachim Schmid, who believes “basically everything is worth looking at〞, has gathered discarded photographs, postcards and newspaper images since 1982. In his on-going project, Archiv, he groups photographs of family life according to themes: people with dogs; teams; new cars; dinner with the family; and so on.Like Schmid, the editors of several self-published art magazines also champion (保卫) found photographs. One of them, called simply Found, was born one snowy night in Chicago, when Davy Rothbard returned to his car to find under his wiper(雨刷) an angry note intended for some else: “Why’s your car HERE at HER place?〞 The note became the starting point for Rothbard’s addictive publication, which features found photographs sent in by readers, such a poster discovered in our drawer. The whole found-photograph phenomenon has raised some questions. Perhaps one of the most difficult is: can these images really be considered as art? And if so, whose art? Yet found photographs produced by artists, such Richard Prince, may riding his horse hurriedly to meet someone? Or how did Prince create this photograph? It’s anyone’s guess. In addition, as we imagine the back-story to the people in the found photographs artists, like Schmid, have collated (整理), we also turn toward our own photographic albums. Why is memory so important to us? Why do we all seek to freezein time the faces of our children, our parents, our lovers, and ourselves? Will they mean anything to anyone after we’ve gone?64. The first paragraph of the passage is used to _________.A. remind readers of found photographsB. advise reader to start a new kind of businessC. ask readers to find photographs behind sofaD. show readers the value of found photographs65. According to the passage, Joachim Schmid _________.A. is fond of collecting family life photographsB. found a complaining not under his car wiperC. is working for several self-published magazinesD. wondered at the artistic nature of found photographs66. The underlined word “them〞 in Para 4 refers to __________.A. the readersB. the editorsC. the found photographsD. the self-published magazines67. By asking a series of questions in Para 5, the author mainly intends to indicate that ________.A. memory of the past is very important to peopleB. found photographs allow people to think freelyC. the back-story of found photographs is puzzlingD. the real value of found photographs is questionable68. The a uthor’s attitude towards found photographs can be described as _________.A. criticalB. doubtfulC. optimisticD. satisfied 2The summer I was ten, my mother decided to bring us to the world of art. My brother and I were not very excited when we realized what my mother meant. What she meant was not that we could take drawing classes or painting classes but that we would haveto spend one afternoon a week with her at the Fine Arts Museum. Before each visit to the museum, she made us read about artists and painting styles(风格). It was almost as bad as being in school. Who wants to spend the summer thinking about artists when you could be with your friends at the swimming pool?First we had to read about ancient Egyptians(古埃与人) and their strange way of painting faces and then go to look at them at the museum. My 12-year-old brother thought this was so funny, but I was not interested. Later we had to learn about artists in the Middle Ages who painted people wearing strange long clothing. We had to look at pictures of fat babies with wings and curly (鬈曲的) hair and with no clothes on flying around the edges of paintings. I certainly couldn't see what was so great about art.On our last visit to the museum, something happened when I saw a painting by a woman called Mary. In it, a woman was reading to a child. The colors were soft and gentle, and you could tell by the mother' s expression how happy she was just to be with the child. I couldn't stop looking at this painting ! I wanted to see every painting Mary had ever made! It was really worth looking at so many paintings to finda painter who could interest me so much.68. The aim of the mother' s plan was to _________.A. take them to visit the museumB. introduce them to the world of artC. ask them to read about artistsD. show them different painting styles69. What was the writer' s experience in the museum before the last visit?A. She came to feel her mother' s love.B. She liked many paintings.C. She hardly enjoyed herself.D. She could understand the pictures of fat babies.70. What made the writer go through a change that summer?A. One of Mary's paintings.B. A strange way of painting.C. Artists in the Middle Ages.D. Her mother' s instruction.71. From the text, we can see _________.A. the importance of curiosityB. the effect of artC. the value of learningD. the power of family education3Meeting people from another culture can be difficult. From the beginning, people may send the wrong signal (信号). Or they may pay no attention to signals from another person who is trying to develop a relationship.Different cultures emphasize (强调) the importance of relationship building to a greater or lesser degree. For example, business in some countries is not possible until there is a relationship of trust. Even with people at work, it is necessary to spend a lot of time in "small talk", usually over a glass of tea, before they do any job. In many European countries -- like the UK or France -- people find it easier to build up a lasting working relationship at restaurants or caf6s rather than at the office.Talk and silence may also be different in some cultures. I once made a speech in Thailand. I had expected my speech to be a success and start a lively discussion; instead there was an uncomfortable silence. The people present just stared at me and smiled. After getting to know their ways better, I realized that they thought I was talking too much. In my own culture, we express meaning mainly through words, but people there sometimes feel too many words are unnecessary.Even within Northern Europe, cultural differences can cause serious problems. Certainly, English and German cultures share similar values; however, Germans prefer to get down to business more quickly. We think that they are rude. In fact, this is just because one culture starts discussions and makes decisions more quickly. People from different parts of the world have different values, and sometimes these values are quite against each other. However, if we can understand them better, amulticultural environment (多元文化环境) will offer a wonderful chance for us to learn from each other.72. In some countries, eating together at restaurants may make it easier for people to _______.A. develop closer relationsB. share the same cultureC. get to know each otherD. keep each other company73. The author mentions his experience in Thailand to show that _________.A. the English prefer to make long speechesB. too many words are of no useC. people from Thailand are quiet and shy by natureD. even talk and silence can be culturally different74. According to the text, how can people from different cultures understand each other better?A. By sharing different ways of life.B. By accepting different habits.C. By recognizing different values.D. By speaking each other' s languages.75. What would be the best title for the text?A. Multicultural Environment.B. Cross-Cultural Differences.C. How to Understand Each Other.D. How to Build Up a Relationship.4.The literal meaning of philosophy is “love of wisdom〞. But this meaning does not tell us very much. Unlike the other disciplines〔学科〕,philosophy cannot be defined by what you study ,because it is actually unlimited. Anything can be the subject matter of philosophy: are, history, law, language, literature, mathematics, and in fact, the other academic disciplines are directly related to philosophy. For this reason you get a Doctorate〔博士学位〕of Philosophy (Ph. D.) in biochemistry, or computer science, or psychology. Two broad sub-fields of philosophy are logic and the history of philosophy. Logicis the science of argument and critical thinking. It provides sound methods for distinguishing good from bad reasoning .The history of philosophy involves the study of major philosophers and period in the development of philosophy.Of what use is philosophy? First it is useful in educational advancement. It is necessary for understanding other disciplines. Only philosophy questions the nature of the concepts used in a discipline, and its relation to other discoveries. And through the study of philosophy, one develops sound methods of research and analysis that can be applied to any field. There are a number of general uses of philosophy. It strengthens one’s ability to solve problems, to communicate, to organize ideas and issues, to persuade, and to take what is the most important form a large quantity of data. These general uses are of great benefit in the career field, not necessarily obtaining one’s first job after graduation, but for preparing for position of responsibility, management and leadership later on. It is very shortsighted after all, to take a course of studies only for the purpose of getting one’s first job. The useful skills developed through the study of philosophy have significant long-term benefits in career advancement. No other discipline systematically follows the ideals of wisdom, leadership, and capacity to resolve human conflict.72.According to Paragraph 1. Philosophy can best be described as the study of .A.social sciencesB.natural sciencesC.both social and natural sciencesD.the subject matter of politics73.With the study of philosophy, you can .A.become a great leaderB.succeed in everythingC.find a good job soon after graduationD.make progress in your career development74.According to the passage, which of the follwing statements is TRUE?A.Philosophy is an independent discipline.B.Logic helps you to become a better thinker.C.The study of philosophy brings you immediate benefits.D.The meaning of philosophy is too limited to define.75. From the passage, we can concludeA.not all the subjects have to do with philosophyB.a person will get a Ph. D. if he/she studies philosophyC.philosophy can be helpful for the study of any other subjectsD.philosophy is the only solution to all the problems in the world5I believe that my country, Poland, is a perfect example for a place where food is particularly important. When we were little children, we began to understand how much a loaf of bread meant to our parents—to some it might sound silly but for me the custom of kissing bread before you started cutting it was simply amazing. It's not so common nowadays to treat food that way, since you hardly ever bake your own bread. Besides, everyone would call you crazy if you tried to kiss every bread roll before you ate them! But though we no longer make our food from scratch (起点), some customs have been kept--that's why I feel so sorry every time I have to throw any food away—even though I no longer live with my parents and nobody would blame me for this anymore! Many people of our nation are still working as farmers, eating what they grow and harvest and therefore enjoying everything more. It's widely known that you value more anything that needs your effort in the first place. In most homes in Poland, especially those of farmers, the whole family would try and have their meals together--extremely difficult now, but so rewarding (值得) ! You can share other members' troubles and successes, give your children some attention, or just sit down for a moment instead of rushing through life aimlessly. Furthermore, your body, and stomach in particular will be very grateful (感激) for such a time!In Poland, a wedding, Christmas or even a birthday is celebrated with a great meal.Women in the house get together and cook, sometimes for a few days before the event, and the extremely good or unusual food will be remembered and widely talked about. You cannot over-value the importance of food in the country. What's more, almost everyone in Poland will be as interested in the topic as I am.56. When the writer was a child, he / she ________.A. found people were crazy about breadB. began to realize the importance of foodC. thought that cutting bread was amazingD. learned people hardly baked their own bread57. The writer feels very sorry when he/she has to throw away any food becauseA. he/she makes food from scratchB. his/her parents would blame him/herC. some customs still have effect on him/herD. many people are still working hard as farmers58. From the text, we can learn that, in Poland, ________.A. most meals can be interesting topics for a long timeB. the whole family often have meals together nowadaysC. it's common for women to get together to cook for a few daysD. family members can know more. about each other by having meals together参考答案1答案 64.D 65.A 66.D 67.B 68.C2. 答案 68.B 69.C 70.A 71.B3答案 72.D 73.D 74.C 75.B4, 答案 72.C 73.D 74.B 75.C5. 答案 56.B 57.C 58.D。

2013高考英语二轮复习讲义〔阅读理解〕及训练11:〔答案〕小试牛刀---------阅读理解Does your older brother think he’s cleverer than you ? Well, he’s probably right.According to a new research published in the journal Intelligence, the oldest children in families are likely to have the highest IQs and the youngest the lowest ,A number of studies have suggested that IQ scores decline with birth order. In the most recent study, at Vrije University, Amsterdam, researchers looked at men and women whose IQ had been tested at the ages of 5,12 ,and 18.The results , which show a trend for the oldest to score better than the youngest in each test, involved about 200,000people.That showed that first-borns had a three-point IQ advantage over the second-born, who was a point ahead of the next in line. The order of birth can also affect personality, achievement, and career, with first-borns being more academically successful and more likely to win Nobel prizes. However, eldset children are less likely to be radical and pioneering . Charles Darwin, for example, was the fifth child of six.Exactly why there should be such differences is not clear, and there are a number of theories on environmental influences on the child. The so-called dilution(稀释法) theory suggests that as family resources, both emotional and physical, as well as economic, are limited, it follows that, as a result , as more children e along, the levels of parental attention and encouragement will drop.Another theory is that the intellectual(智力) environment in the family favors the first-born who has, at least for some time, the benefit of individual care and help. The theory which enjoys the most support is that the extra time and patience that the earlier-borns get from their parents, pared with those arriving later, gives theman advantage.72.What is the passage mainly about?A.IQ scores have little to do with the order of birth.B.Intellectual families favor the first-bornC.The order of birth can have an effect on IQD.The order of birth can affect personality, achievement, and carrer.73.By using Charles Darwin as an example, the author wants to prove that A.eldest children are the smartest in a familyB.youngest children will usually bee expertsC.first-borns are more likely to win Nobel prizesD.eldest children are less likely to try something new74.What do we know about the dilution theory?A.Intellectual parents love the people’s lives may be taking a toll on family life,a new study suggests. The study, which followed more than 1,300 adults over 2 years, found that those who consistently used a mobile phone throughout the study period were more likely to report negative “spillover’’ between work and home life—and,in turn, less satisfaction with their family life.Spillover essentially〔本质上〕means that the line between work and home begins to bee unclear.Work life may invade home life when a.parent is taking job—related calls at home, for instance--or family issues may start to take up work time. For example,a child may call mom at work, telling her "microwave exploded〞 explained Noelle Chesley,an assistant professor of sociology at the University of Wisconsin—Milwaukee and the author of the study. The problem with cell phones seems to be that they are allowing for ever more spillover between work and home.‘This may be especially true for working women, the study found.Among men, consistent use of mobile phones seemed to allow more work issues to creep 〔潜入〕into family time. But for women, the spillover tended to go in both directions being “connected〞 meant that work cut into home time, and family issues came:into work life.Cell phones seem to be opening more lines for stressful exchanges among family members. But there may be ways to control the spillover, according to Chesley.Employers, she said, could look at their policies on contacting employees after hours to make sure their expectations are “reasonable〞.For their part, employees could decide that cell phones go off during family time, Chesley said.60.What does the underlined phrase “taking a toll’’ probably mean in Paragraph 1?A.Explaining.B.Protecting.C.Extending D.Damaging.61.What is the pu rpose of offering the example “microwave “Barbara, be enthusiastic! Enthusiasm will take you further than any amount of experience.〞 How right they were!“Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.〞 Wrote Ralph Waldo Emerson. It is the paste that helps you hang on there when the going gets tough. It is the inner voice that whispers, “I can do it!〞When others shout, “No, you can’t!〞 It took years and years for the early work of Barbara Mclintock, a geneticist who won the 1983 Nobel Prize in medicine, to be generally accepted. Yet she didn’t stop working on her experiments. Work was such a deep pleasure for her that she never thought of stopping. We are all born with wide-eyed, enthusiastic wonder and it is this childlike wonder that gives enthusiastic people such youthful air, whatever their age. At 90, cellist Pablo Casals would start his day by playing Bach. As the music flowed through hisfingers, his stooped shoulders would straighten and joy would reappear in his eyes. As author and poet Samuel Ulman once wrote, “Years wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.〞Enthusiastic people also love what they do, regardless of money or title or power. Patricia Mellratl retired director of the Missouri Repertory Theater in Kansas City, was once asked where she got her enthusiasm. She replied, “My father, long ago, told me,I never made a dime until I stopped working for money.〞If we cannot do what we love as a full-time career, we can as a hobby. Elizabeth Layton Wellsville,Kan,was 68 before she began to draw. This activity ended periods of depression that troubled her for at least 30 years and the quality of her work led one critic to say, “I am tempted into a genius.〞We can’t afford to waste tears on“might-have-been〞. We need to turn the tears into sweat as we go after“what-can-be〞.We need to live each moment whole-heartedly, with all our senses—finding pleasure in the sweet smell of a back-yard garden, the simple picture of a six-year-old, the beauty of a rainbow.64.
