Vowel Sounds
The vowels (a, e, i, o, u) can have a ‘long’ or ‘short’ sound.
Let’s look at the short vowel sounds first. Brainstorm some words with the short vowel sounds and then write them in the table below.
Read the sentences below and circle the words with the short vowel sounds. Use a different colour for each vowel sound.
1. April ran happily through the park with her little sister.
2. I am very sorry you are sick. I hope you feel better soon.
3. Sarah’s old dog, John, is lying in the garden in the sun.
4. Matthew is maybe going to live in America next year.
5. The big black truck raced down the road and crashed.
6. Susie can’t go to university unless she does well in her exams.
7. Sam told Jamie to listen to the radio that night after dinner.
