The 400 phone messages said it all. Veterans(老兵) wanted to talk, and Jeff Beers, a military history buff and the son of a retired Navy man, was ready to listen. Beers had volunteered for the Veterans History Project, a program at the Library of Congress dedicated to preserving the oral histories of American’s 19 million veterans. Local newspapers listed Beer’s number, and the response was tremendous. He’s videotaped 52 vets ever since.“Most of them are shocked that anyone would be interested in their small story,” says Beers, 33, an assistant engineer for the city of Poway, Calif. “They ask, ‘Why now?’ B ut it has to be now, before it’s too late.” The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs estimates that 1,847 veterans die each day.Beers and the other volunteers are collecting the I-was-there detail. One of the most moving came from a World War II POW (prisoner of war): “He had to march 500 miles through the Black Forest in winter. They ate bark soup and slept at local farm.”The WW II generation comprises(包含) most of the 700 histories gathered since the program began in 2001. But, says director Ellen Lovell, they want to hear from vets of every war. “I interviewed my brother-in-law, an army surgeon in Vietnam,” she says. “He said he shared things with me t hat he’s never told anyone.”1. What do we know from the text about the veterans?A. They live a very happy life after the war.B. They often told their stories to others.C. They were highly respected by people.D. They are becoming fewer and fewer in numbers.答案解析:答案为D。

第一部分必修五Module 1Ⅰ.阅读理解A(2015·重庆,A)导学号 02280622 At thirteen,I was diagnosed (诊断) with a kind of attention disorder. It made school difficult for me.When everyone else in the class was focusing on tasks,I could not.In my first literature class,Mrs.Smith asked us to read a story and then write on it,all within 45 minutes.I raised my hand right away and said,“Mrs.Smith, you see,the doctor said I have attention problems.I might not be able to do it.”She glanced down at me through her glasses,“You are no different from your classmates, young man.”I tried, but I didn't finish the reading when the bell rang.I had to take it home.In the quietness of my bedroom, the story suddenly all became clear to me.It was about a blind person,Louis Braille. He lived in a time when the blind couldn't get much education. But Louis didn't give up.Instead,he invented a reading system of raised dots (点),which opened up a whole new world of knowledge to the blind.Wasn't I the “blind” in my class, being made to learn like the “sighted”students? My thoughts spilled out and my pen started to dance.I completed the task within 40 minutes.Indeed,I was no different from others;I just needed a quieter place. If Louis could find his way out of his problems, why should I ever give up?I didn't expect anything when I handed in my paper to Mrs.Smith,so it was quite a surprise when it came back to me the next day—with an “A” on it.At the bottom of the paper were these words:“See what you can do when you keep trying?”语篇解读:本文讲述了作者上学时的个人经历。

第一部分必修二Module 3Ⅰ.阅读理解A(2015·山西省太原五中高三月考)导学号 02280220 Both of Jessica's parents were lawyers and expected her to follow suit. So she went to law school, got a job at a great firm in Washington, DC, and worked as a lawyer for a decade. But her heart was never in it. “I had a big salary but no personal satisfaction,” she says.Jessica found pleasure in the same thing that had brought her joy since joining the church choir at the age of 12. “Singing always felt like communicating something real at a spiritual and emotional level,” says Jessica. Yet she never considered it a career option. “That seemed like something people did in fairy tales, and I would never let my parents down,” she says.It was her mom's diagnosis of brain cancer in 2009 that made Jessica realize she had to write her own happy-ever-after. “Work was busy and my mother was ailing. So I was flying back and forth from Washington, DC to Houston to see her,” Jessica says. “I finally said,‘Enough!’and quit.” While caring for her mom, Jessica made a plan. She would spend her savings and study music for a year, and then open a part-time law practice so she could pursue her passion. Before her mother passed away two years later, she encouraged Jessica to follow her dream. Her song Live This Life was inspired by her mom, and her dad came to watch her perform at clubs. In 2012, Jessica moved to Nashville to try singing and songwriting. A decade of presenting cases in court gave her the confidence to sing for a crowd. “At 20, I would have been too shy to perform,” says Jessica.“Doing music is so free,” Jessica says. “There's no pressure to be a star. Success, to me, isn't a dollar amount or a record deal; it's doing what I love.”语篇解读:本文讲述了Jessica听从当律师的父母的话成为一名律师,虽然工资高可是她并不开心。

2017年高考英语一轮阅读理解选编一【2016高考英语阅读理解训练】阅读下面短文,选择最佳答案。
People have wondered for a long time how their personaliti es and behaviour are formed. It is not easy to explain why on e person is intelligent and another is not, or why one is cooper ative and another is competitive.Social scientists are of course extremely interested in these types of questions. They want to explain why we possess cer tain characteristics and exhibit certain behaviour. There are n o clear answers yet, but two distinct schools of thought on the matter have developed. As one might expect, the two approa ches are very different from each other, and there is a great d eal of debate between proponents of each theory. The contro versy(争论) is often conveniently referred to as “nature and nurture”. Those who support the “nature” side of the conflict believe t hat our personalities and behaviour patterns are largely deter mined by biological factors. That our environment has little, if anything, to do with our abilities, characteristics and behaviou r is central to this theory. Taken to an extreme, this theory states that our behaviour is predetermined to such a great degree that we are almost completely governed by our instincts (本能).Proponents of the “nurture” theory, or, as they are often call ed, behaviourists, claim that our environment is more importa nt than our biologically based instincts in determining how we will act. A behaviourist, B.F. Skinner, sees humans as beings whose behaviour is almost completely shaped by their surrou ndings. The behaviourists’ view of the human being is quite m echanistic. They state that, like machines, humans respond to environmental stimuli (刺激) as the basis of their behaviour. Socially and politically, the consequences of these two theo ries are far-reaching. In the , for example, blacks often score below white s on standardized intelligence tests. This leads some “nature”proponents to conclude that blacks are genetically lower in st atus than whites. Behaviourists, on the contrary, say that the differences in scores are due to the fact that blacks are often r obbed of many of the educational and other environmental ad vantages that whites enjoy, and that, as a result, they do not d evelop the same responses that whites do.Neither of these theories can yet fully explain human behav iour. In fact, it is quite likely that the key to our behaviour lies somewhere between these two extremes and that the controve rsy will continue for a long time is certain.1. This passage is mainly concerned with ___________.A. relation between personality and behaviourB. relation between behaviour and environmentC. different accounts of patterns of human behaviourD. different theories of the formation of human personality a nd behaviour.2. The underlined word “proponents” in Paragraph 2 means _ _________.A. teachersB. advisorsC. advocatesD. judges3. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the passage?A. To call our attention to the changes of human behaviour.B. To urge scientists to do more research in social science.C. To give us a detailed explanation of human behaviour.D. 湖南岳阳市2017高考英语一轮阅读理解统练及参考答案【2016模拟题】阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
Scientists recently found three animal species living two miles below the surface of the Mediterranean Sea,where the super-salty waters don't have oxygen(氧)。
They’re multicellular(多细胞的), which means their bodies have many cells。
They each are as small as a large grain of sand。
But they are animals. The most exciting thing about these creatures, say the scientists,is that they obviously don't need oxygen to live. What biologists know about life so far is that only single—celled living things can live in places that have no oxygen, and that multicellular organisms(有机物) can visit these places, but not live there。
These newly found creatures could change that idea。
Finding animals down th ere was so surprising that the scientists couldn’t believe it。

firstannual International Jazz Day.UNESCO(United Nations Educational,Scientific and Cultural Organization)recently set April 30 as a day to raise awareness of jazz music, its significance, and its potential as a unifying (联合)voice across cultures.Despite the celebrations, though,in the U.S.the jazz audience continues to shrink and grow older, and the music has failed to connect with younger generations. It's Jason Moran's job to help change that.As the Kennedy Center's artistic adviser for jazz,Moran hopes to widen the audience for jazz, make the music more accessible, and preserve its history and culture."Jazz seems like it's not really a part of the American appetite,"Moran tells National Public Radio's reporterNeal Conan."What I'm hoping to accomplish is that my generation and younger start to reconsider and understand that jazz is not black and white anymore. It's actually color, and it's actually digital."Moran says one of the problems with jazz today is that the entertainment aspect of the music has been lost."The music can't be presented today the way it was in 1908 or 1958.It has to continue to move, because the way the world works is not the same,"says Moran.Last year,Moran worked on a project that arranged Fats Waller's music for a dance party,"just to kind of put it back in the mind that Waller is dance music as much as it is concert music,"says Moran."For me,it's the recontextualization. In music, where does the emotion(情感)lie? Are we,as humans, gaining any insight (感悟)on how to talk about ourselves and how something as abstract as a Charlie Parker record gets us into a dialogue about our emotions and our thoughts?Sometimes we lose sight that the music has a wider context,"says Moran,"so I want to continue those dialogues. Those are the things I want to foster."28.Why did UNESCO set April 30 as International Jazz Day?A.To remember the birth of jazz.B.To protect cultural diversity.C.To encourage people to study music.D.To recognize build﹣it﹣yourself solar still(蒸馏器)is one of the best ways to obtain drinking water in areas where theliquid is not readily available.Developed by two doctors in the U.S.Department of Agriculture,it's an excellent water collector.Unfortunately, you must carry the necessary equipment with you, since it's all but impossible to find natural substitutes. The only components required, though, are a 5'×5'sheet of clear or slightly milky plastic, six feet of plastic tube, and a container﹣perhaps just a drinking cup﹣to catch the water. These pieces can be folded into a neat little pack and fastened on your belt.To construct a working still, use a sharp stick or rock to dig a hole four feet across and three feet deep.Try to make the hole in a damp area to increase the water catcher's productivity.Place your cup in the deepest part of the hole. Then lay the tube in place so that one end rests all the way in the cup and the rest of the line runs up﹣and out﹣the side of the hole.Next, cover the hole with the plastic sheet, securing the edges of the plastic with dirt and weighting the sheet's center down with a rock. The plastic should now form a cone(圆锥体)with 45﹣degree﹣angled sides. The low point of the sheet must be centered directly over, and no more than three inches above, the cup.The solar still works by creating a greenhouse under the plastic.Ground water evaporates (蒸发)and collects on the sheet until small drops of water form, run down the material, and fall off into the cup. When the container is full, you can suck the refreshment out through the tube, and won't have to break down the still every time you need a drink.32.What do we know about the solar still equipment from the first paragraph?A.It's delicate.B.It's expensive.C.It's complex.D.It's portable.33.What does the underlined phrase"the water catcher"in paragraph 2 refer to?A.The tube.B.The still.C.The hole.D.The cup.34.What's the last step of constructing a working solar still?A.Dig a hole of a certain size.B.Put the cup in place.C.Weight the sheet's center down.D.Cover the hole with the plastic sheet.35.When a solar still works, drops of water come into the cup The number of speakers of English in Shakespeare's time is estimated (估计) to have been about five million.Today it is estimated that some 260 million people speak it as a native language, mainly in the United States,Canada,Great Britain,Ireland,South Africa,Australia and New Zealand. In addition to the standard varieties of English found in these areas, there are a great many regional and social varieties of the language as well as various levels of usage that are employed both in its spoken and written forms. In fact,it is impossible to estimate the number of people in the world who have acquired an adequate(足够的) working knowledge of English in addition to their own languages. The purpose for English learning and the situations in which such learning takes place are so varied that it is difficult to explain and still more difficult to judge what forms an adequate working knowledge for each situation. The main reason for the widespread demand for English is its present importance as a world language.Besides serving the indefinite needs of its native speakers,English is a language in which some of important works in science, technology, and other fields are being produced, and not always by native speakers. It is widely used for such purposes as meteorological and airport communications, international conferences, and the spread of information over the radio and television networks of many nations. It is a language of wider communication for a number of developing countries, especially former British colonies. Many of these countries have multilingual populations and need a language for internal communication in such matters as government, commerce, industry, law and education as well as for international communication and for entrance to the scientific and technological developments in the West.1.What would be the best title for this passage?A.The Difficulties of Learning EnglishB.International CommunicationsC.The Standard Varieties of EnglishD.English as a World Language答案:D主旨大意题。
