A Grassroots RemedyA) Most of us spend our lives seeking the natural world. To this end, we walk the dog, play golf, go fishing, sit in the garden, drink outside rather than inside the pub, have a picnic, live in the suburbs, go to the seaside, buy a weekend place in the country. The most popular leisure activity in Britain is going for a walk. And when joggers (慢跑者) jog, they don't run the streets. Every one of the minstinctively heads to the park or the river. It is my profound belief that not only do we all need nature, but we all seek nature, whether we know we are doing so or not.B) But despite this, our children are growing up nature-deprived ( 丧失) , I spent my boyhood climbing trees on Stratham Common, south London. These days, children are robbed of these an cientfreedoms, due to problems like crime, traffic, the loss of the open spaces and odd new perceptions about what is best for children, that is to say, things that can be bought, rather than things that can be found.C) The truth is to be found elsewhere. A study in the U.S. families had moved to better housing and the children were assessed for ADHD -- attention deficit hyperactivity disorder ( 多动症) .Those whose accommodation had morenatural views showed an improvement of 19%; those who had the same improvement in material surroundings but no nice view improved just 4%.D) A study in Sweden indicated that kindergartenchildren who could play in a natural environment had less illness and greater physical ability than children used only to a normal playground. A U.S. study suggested that when a school gave children access to a natural environment, academic levels were raised across the entire school.E) Another study found that children play differently in a natural environment. In playgrounds, children create a hierarchy (等级) based on physical abilities, with the tough ones taking the lead. But when a grassy area was planted with bushes, the children got much more into fantasy play, and the social hierarchy was now based on imagination and creativity.F) Most bullying (持枪凌弱) is found in schools where there is a tarmac (柏油碎石) play ground; the least bullying is in a natural area that the children are encouraged to explore. This reminds mean pleasantly of Sunny hill School in Stratham, with its harsh tarmac, where I used to hang about incomers fantasizing about wildlife. The children are frequently discouraged from involvement with natural spaces, for health and safety reasons, for fear that they might get dirty or that they might cause damage. So, instead, the damage is done to the children themselves: not to their bodies but to their souls.G) One of the great problems of modem childhood is ADHD, now increasingly and expensively treated with drugs. Yet one study after another indicates that contact with nature giveshuge benefits to ADHD children. However, we spend money on drugs rather than on green places.H) The life of old people is measurably better when they have access to nature. The increasing emphasis for thegrowing population of old people is in quality rather than quantity of years. And study after study finds that a gardenis the single most important thing in finding that quality.I) In wider and more difficult areas of life, there is evidence to indicate that natural surroundingsim prove all kinds of things. Even problems with crime and aggressive behavior are reduced when there is contact with the natural world. Dr. William Bird, researcher from the Royal Societyfor the Protection of birds, states in his study, "A natural environment can reduce violent behavior because itsrestorative process helps reduce anger and impulsive behavior." Wild places need encouraging for this reason, no matter how small their contribution.J) We tend to look on nature conservation as some kindof favor that human beings are granting to the natural world. The error here is far too deep: not only do humans neednature for themselves, but the very idea that humanity andthe natural world are separable things is profoundly damaging. Human beings are a species of mammals For seven million years they lived on the planet as part of nature. Our ancestral selves miss the natural world and long for contact with nonhuman life. Anyone who has patted a dog, stoked a cat, sat under a tree with a pint of beer, given or received a bunch of flowers or chosen to walk through the park on a nice day, understands that. We need the wild world. It isessential to our well-being, our health, our happiness.Without the wild world we are not more but less civilized. Without other living things around us we are less than human.K) Five Ways to Find Harmony with the Natural World Walk:Break the rhythm of permanently being under a roof. Get off a stop earlier, make a circuit of the park at lunchtime, walkthe child to and from school, get a dog, feel yourself moving in moving air, look, listen, absorb.Sit: Take a moment, every now and then, to be still inan open space. In the garden, anywhere that's not in the office, anywhere out of the house, away from the routine. Sit under a tree, look at water, feel refreshed, ever so slightly renewed.Drink: The best way to enjoy the natural world is by oneself; the second best way is in company. Take a drink outside with a good person, a good gathering: talk with the sun and the wind with bird-song for background.Learn: Expand your boundaries. Leam five species of bird, five butterflies, five trees, five bird songs. That way, you see and hear more: and your mind responds gratefully to the greater amount of wildness in your life.Travel: The places you always wanted to visit: by the seaside, in the country, in the hills. Take a week-end break, a day-trip, get out these and do it: for the scenery, forthe way through the woods, for the birds, for the bees. Go somewhere special and bring specialness home. It lasts forever, after all.46. The study in Sweden shows that more access to nature makes children less likely to fall ill.47. The author's profound belief is that people instinctively seek nature in different ways.48. It can be very helpful to provide more green spaces for children with ADHD.49. Elderly people will enjoy a life of better quality when they contact more with nature.50. Nowadays, people think things that can be bought are best for children, rather than things that can be found.51. Dr. William Bird suggests in his study that access to nature contributes to the reduction of violence.52. According to a study in the U. S. Children with ADHD whose accommodation had more natural views showed much better improvement.53. Children who have chances to explore natural areas are less likely to be involved in bullying.54. We can find harmony with the natural world in various ways, among which there are walking, sitting, drinking, learning and traveling.55. It is extremely harmful to think that humanity and the natural world can be separated.

The Internet, of course, and everything that comes with it – Facebook, Twitter (微博). You can write your own list. There's been a warning about the imminent death of literate civilization for a long time. In the 20th century, first it was the movies, then radio, then television that seemed to spell doom for the written world. None did. Reading survived; in fact it not only survived, it has flourished. The world is more literate than ever before – there are more and more readers, and more and more books. The fact that we often get our reading material online today is not something we should worry over. The electronic and digital revolution of the last two decades has arguably shown the way forward for reading and for writing. Take the arrival of e-bookreaders as an example. Devices like Kindle make reading more convenient and are a lot more environmentally friendly than the traditional paper book.As technology makes new ways of writing possible, new ways of reading are possible. Interconnectivity allows for the possibility of a reading experience that was barely imaginable before. Where traditional books had to make do with photographs and illustrations, an e-book can provide readers with an unlimited number of links: to texts, pictures, and videos. In the future, the way people write novels, history, and philosophy will resemble nothing seen in the past.On the other hand, there is the danger of trivialization. One Twitter group is offering its followers single-sentence-long "digests" of the great novels. War and Peace in a sentence? You must be joking. We should fear the fragmentation of reading. There is the danger that the high-speed connectivity of the Internet will reduce our attention span - that we will be incapable of reading anything of length or which requires deep concentration. In such a fast-changing world, in which reality seems to be remade each day, we need the ability to focus and understand what is happening to us. This has always been the function of literature and we should be careful not to let it disappear. Our society needs to be able to imagine the possibility of someone utterly in tune with modern technology but able to make sense of a dynamic, confusing world. In the 15th century, Johannes Guttenberg's invention of the printing press in Europe had a huge impact on civilization. Once upon a time the physical book was a challenging thing. We should remember this before we assume that technology is outto destroy traditional culture.81. Which of the following paragraphs briefly reviews the historical challenges for reading?A. Paragraph One.B. Paragraph Two.C. Paragraph Three.D. Paragraph Four.82. The following are all cited as advantages of e-books EXCEPT _____.A. multimodal contentB. environmental friendlinessC. convenience for readersD. imaginative design83. Which of the following can best describe how the author feels towardsingle-sentence-long novels?A. IronicB. Worried.C. Sarcastic.D. Doubtful.84. According to the passage, people need knowledge of modern technology and _____ to survive in the fast-changing society.A. good judgmentB. high sensitivityC. good imaginationD. the ability to focus85. What is the main idea of the passage?A. Technology pushes the way forward for reading and writing.B. Interconnectivity is a feature of new reading experience.C. Technology is an opportunity and a challenge for traditional reading.D. Technology offers a greater variety of reading practice.TEXT BI know when the snow melts and the first robins (知更鸟) come to call, when the laughter of children returns to the parks and playgrounds, something wonderful is about to happen.Spring cleaning.I'll admit spring cleaning is a difficult notion for modern families to grasp. T oday's busy families hardly have time to load the dishwasher, much less clean the doormat. Asking the family to spend the weekend collecting winter dog piles from the melting snow in the backyard is like announcing there will be no more Wi-Fi. It interrupts the natural order."Honey, what say we spend the weekend beating the rugs, sorting through the boxes in the basement and painting our bedroom a nice lemony yellow?" I say."Can we at least wait until the NBA matches are over?" my husband answers. But I tell my family, spring cleaning can't wait. The temperature has risen just enough to melt snow but not enough for Little League practice to start. Some flowers are peeking out of the thawing ground, but there is no lawn to seed, nor garden to tend. Newly wakened from our winter's hibernation (冬眠), yet still needing extra blankets at night, we open our windows to the first fresh air floating on the breeze and all of the natural world demanding "Awake and be clean!"Biologists offer a theory about this primal impulse to clean out every drawer and closet in the house at spring's first light, which has to do with melatonin, the sleepytime hormone (激素) our bodies produce when it's dark. When spring's light comes, the melatonin diminishes, and suddenly we are awakened to the dusty, virus-filled house we've been hibernating in for four months.I tell my family about the science and psychology of a good healthy cleaning at spring's arrival. I speak to them about life's greatest rewards waiting in the removal of soap scum from the bathtub, which hasn't been properly cleaned since the first snowfall."I'll do it," says the eldest child, a 21-year-old college student who lives at home. "You will? Wow!" I exclaim.Maybe after all these years, he's finally grasped the concept. Maybe he's expressing his rightful position as eldest child and role model. Or maybe he's going to Floridafor a break in a couple of weeks and he's being nice to me who is the financial-aid officer. No matter. Seeing my adult son willingly cleaning that dirty bathtub gives me hope for the future of his 12-year-old brother who, instead of working, is found to be sleeping in the seat of the window he is supposed to be cleaning."Awake and be clean!" I say.86. According to the passage, "...spring cleaning is a difficult notion for modern families to grasp" means that spring cleaning _____.A. is no longer an easy practice to understand.B. is no longer part of modern family life.C. requires more family members to be involved.D. calls for more complicated skills and knowledge.87. Which of the following is LEAST likely to be included infamily spring cleaning?A. Beating the rugs.B. Cleaning the window.C. Restoring Wi-Fi services.D. Cleaning the backyard.88. Why does the author say “spring cleaning can't wait”?A. Because there will be more activities when it gets warmer.B. Because the air is fresher and the breeze is lighter.C. Because the whole family is full of energy at spring time.D. Because the snow is melting and the ground is thawing.89. Which of the following interpretations of the biologists' theory about melatonin is INCORRECT?A. The production of melatonin in our bodies varies at different times.B. Melatonin is more likely to cause sleepiness in our bodies.C. The reduction of melatonin will cause wakefulness in our bodies.D. The amount of melatonin remains constant in our bodies.90. Which of the following can best sum up the author's overall reaction to her adult son's positive response to spring cleaning?A. Surprised and skeptical.B. Elated and hesitant.C. Relieved and optimistic.D. Optimistic and hesitant.TEXT CThese days lots of young Japanese do omiai, literally, "meet and look." Many of them do so willingly. In today's prosperous and increasingly conservative Japan, the traditional omiai kekkon, or arranged marriage, is thriving. But there is a difference. In the original omiai, the young Japanese couldn't reject the partner chosen by his parents and their middleman. After World War II, many Japanese abandoned the arranged marriage as part of their rush to adopt the more democratic ways of their American conquerors. The Western ren'ai kekkon, or love marriage, became popular; Japanese began picking their own mates by dating and falling in love. But the Western way was often found wanting in an important respect: it didn't necessarily produce a partner of the right economic, social, and educational qualifications. "Today's young people are quite calculating," says Chieko Akiyama,a social commentator. What seems to be happening now is a repetition of a familiar process in the country's history, the "Japanization" of an adopted foreign practice. The Western ideal of marrying for love is accommodated in a new omiai in which both parties are free to reject the match. "Omiai is evolving into a sort of stylized introduction," Mrs. Akiyama says. Many young Japanese now date in their early twenties, but with no thought of marriage. When they reach the age - in the middle twenties for women, the late twenties for men - they increasingly turn to omiai. Some studies suggest that as many as 40 % of marriages each year are omiai kekkon. It's hard to be sure, say those who study the matter, because many Japanese couples, when polled, describe their marriage as a love match even if it was arranged. These days, doing omiai often means going to a computer matching service rather than to a nakodo. The nakodo of tradition was an old woman who knew all the kids in the neighbourhood and went around trying to pair them off byspeaking to their parents;a successful match would bring her a wedding invitation and a gift of money. But Japanese today find it's less awkward to reject a proposed partner if the nakodo is a computer.Japan has about five hundred computer matching services. Some big companies, including Mitsubishi, run one for their employees. At a typical commercial service, an applicant pays $80 to $125 to have his or her personal data stored in the computer for two years and $200 or so more if a marriage results. The stored information includes some obvious items, like education and hobbies, and some not-so-obvious ones, like whether a person is the oldest child. (First sons, and to some extent first daughters, face an obligation of caring for elderly parents.)91. According to the passage, today's young Japanese prefer _____.A. a traditional arranged marriage.B. a new type of arranged marriage.C. a Western love marriage.D. a more Westernized love marriage.92. Which of the following statements is CORRECT?A. A Western love marriage tends to miss some Japanese values.B. Less attention is paid to the partner's qualification in arranged marriages.C. Young Japanese would often calculate their partner's wealth.D. A new arranged marriage is a repetition of the older type.93. According to the passage, the figure 40% (Paragraph Five) is uncertain because _____.A. there has been a big increase in the number of arranged。

1The 2024 Guangdong Postgraduate English Exam: What You Need to KnowHi there! My name is Xiaoming and I'm going to tell you all about the big English test for university students in Guangdong next year. It's called the Guangdong Postgraduate English Exam and it's really important if you want to go to graduate school.First, let me explain what a "postgraduate" is. It means someone who has already finished their bachelor's degree, which is the first university degree you get. If you want to study even more after that, you can become a "postgraduate" student and work towards a master's or doctoral degree. Cool, right? But before you can start that postgraduate program, you have to take this really big English exam. The test is changing a little bit for 2024, so let me tell you what's new.The biggest change is that the whole test will be computer-based from next year. That means no more writing onpaper - you'll take the test on a computer instead. Some parts will even篇2The 2024 Guangdong English Test - What You Need to Know!Hi everyone! My name is Xiao Ming and I'm a 5th grader at Sunshine Elementary School in Guangzhou. I've been studying English since I was really little and I'm super excited (and maybe a teeny bit nervous) about taking the big Guangdong English test next year.My teacher Ms. Li has been telling our class all about the updated 2024 test syllabus. She says the test is getting some big changes to make it even better at checking our English skills. I've been taking lots of notes so I can share what I've learned with you!The Listening SectionThe listening part is probably my favorite section. I love listening to stories and conversations in English! For the 2024 test, we'll have to listen to even more dialogues, passages, and instructions than before. There will be long conversations between two or three people talking about everyday topics like shopping, travel plans, or their hobbies. We need to listen super carefully and understand all the details they mention. We'll also hear longer passages like news reports, advertisements, or school announcements. After each one, there will be questions testing if we understood the main ideas and important details. Paying close attention will be really important!Sometimes they'll play recordings with instructions, like how to get somewhere or how to play a game. We have to listen and then answer questions about the steps involved. I need to practice following directions in English. The test will also have some shorter conversations where we have to choose the picture that matches what we heard. Those are fun because I love looking at the little picture options!Reading to WriteAnother big part of the test is reading different passages and articles in English, then writing responses to show we understood. For example, we might read a short story and then have to describe what happened at the beginning, middle, and end. Orwe could read a news article and then summarize the key points in our own words. We'll also read passages that explain how to do an activity step-by-step, like a recipe or craft instructions. Then we'll have to re-write or re-order the main steps from memory. That checks if we really understood the process. Some passages will be persuasive, like an advertisement or a letter of advice. After reading it, we may have to write whether we agree or disagree with the opinions, and explain our reasons why.The writing part seems super hard, but Ms. Li says as long as we practice a lot, we'll get better at putting our thoughts into words in English. I'm excited to become an awesome writer! The Speaking ChallengeOne new section for 2024 is that we actually have to speak English out loud and get our speaking scored too! I'm a little nervous about this part. For the speaking questions, we'll have to describe pictures and stories verbally. Like if they show us a picture of people doing different activities, we'll have to talk about what we see happening. We might also get questions about general topics, like our hobbies or favorite holidays. We'll have to speak a few sentences sharing our thoughts and experiences related to the topic. There may even be some role-play tasks, where we have to pretend to be ordering food, making an appointment, or something like that. We'll have to have a little back-and-forth conversation in English, just like in real life!To get ready, Ms. Li says we should practice speaking English as much as possible at home. She wants us to get comfortable putting sentences together on the spot.Overall ThoughtsPhew, I have to admit, when Ms. Li first went over all the details of the updated 2024 Guangdong English test, I felt a little overwhelmed! It's crazy how much reading, writing, listening, and even speaking we'll need to do.But Ms. Li reminded us that we've been learning English for years, so we're totally prepared. As long as we keep practicing all our skills, learning new vocab, and paying attention in class, we'll do great!I'm actually getting pretty excited thinking about how much better my English will get by studying hard for this test. By nextyear, I'll be amazing at understanding conversations, summarizing what I read, speaking smoothly, and writing clearly. How cool is that? The 2024 Guangdong English test may be challenging, but I know if my friends and I give it our best effort, we can rock it! Let's show off our stellar English skills, Guangdong! Who's with me?篇32024 Guangdong College English Test SyllabusHi friends! My name is Xiaoming and I'm a 6th grader in Guangzhou. Today I want to tell you all about the super important Guangdong College English Test that happens every year. This test is a really big deal if you want to go to a good university later on. The test keeps changing a little bit each year, so let me fill you in on what's new for 2024!The Reading SectionOne of the hardest parts is the reading section in my opinion. You have to read a bunch of different passages and answer detailed questions about them. The passages can be aboutscience, history, culture, you name it! They really try to trip you up.For 2024, there will be 8 passages instead of 7 like before. That means even more reading to do in the time limit. My teacher says we have to work on our reading speed and skimming skills. Two of the passages will be longer than before too, around 1000 words each! Those long ones are brutal. Some of the questions just ask you basic stuff about the main ideas. But others are way harder, like making inferences about the author's viewpoint or explaining vocabulary from context. The reading section is no joke! The Listening SectionAfter drilling our brains with reading, we have to do the listening part too. This tests if we can understand lectures, conversations, and other audio recordings. The biggest change for 2024 is they are adding a section where we have to listen to a long lecture, around 800 words. Then we have to answer 8 questions about the details and main points. My ears already hurt just thinking about it!The conversations are difficult too because they use casual language and idioms. You really have to pay attention to catchall the implied meanings. The good news is there are still some easier conversations about daily life mixed in.The Writing SectionAnyone else feel like their hand is going to fall off during the writing section? We have to write essays and letters with proper grammar, vocabulary, and organization. It's easy to make little mistakes when you're going so fast. For 2024, we have to write TWO essays for the test instead of just one before. One will be an argumentative essay stating an opinion, and the other will be a descriptive essay about a person, place or thing. Each essay should be around 400 words, so get those pencils ready! The good news is we can still have a cheat sheet to remind us how to structure the essays properly. Outlines, topic sentences, supporting details, all that stuff. As long as we practice a ton, the writing should be manageable. The Speaking SectionBelieve it or not, this used to be the easiest section for me. Just have a casual conversation, describe a scene, easy peasy. Not anymore! For 2024 they are adding a group discussion task where we have to discuss an issue as a team. We'll get a prompt like "What is the biggest challenge facing the environment?" and have to collaborate on a stance using evidence from what we've learned. No scripts allowed, we have to think on our feet! My teacher says this tests our ability to communicate opinions persuasively. Great, no pressure at all! At least there are still some individual tasks mixed in too.Preparing for the Big TestNow you know what's in store for the 2024 Guangdong college test. It's quite a doozy, right? Lots of reading, writing, listening, and now even group speaking. Phew!My best advice is to start preparing as early as possible. Read lots of books and articles out loud to yourself. Write practice essays every week. Listen to podcasts and lectures in English. It's also important to get enough sleep and stay healthy! We'll need all our brain power on test day.I have to admit, thinking about this test stresses me out a little. But I know if I work really hard, I can achieve my dream of going to a top university. An English degree from a great school can open so many doors!Staying positive and giving it my best effort is the way to go. Sure, the 2024 test is extremely challenging. But I'm ready! After all, I was born for this.Good luck to all my friends out there facing this tough test with me. If we buckle down and believe in ourselves, we can conquer any obstacle. The future is ours! Let's get studying.篇4The 2024 Guangdong Postgraduate English Exam SyllabusHey kids! It's me again, little Xiao Ming from Guangzhou. Today I want to tell you all about the 2024 Guangdong Postgraduate English Exam Syllabus. I know, I know, it sounds super boring. But trust me, this is really important stuff, especially if you want to go to a great university one day!You see, in Guangdong province, all the students who want to go to graduate school after college have to take this huge English exam. It tests how well they can read, write, listen to and speak English. The better you do on the test, the more choices you'll have for which fantastic graduate program you can attend! The exam has four main sections - listening, reading, writing, and speaking. For the listening part, you have to listen reallycarefully to recordings and conversations in English and answer questions about what you heard. My favorite tips are to concentrate super hard and not get distracted, and to listen for key words and context clues. The reading section has a bunch of different passages to read, like articles, essays, and stories. You have to read them thoroughly and show you understand all the details and main ideas by answering questions. The readings can be about science, history, culture, you name it! To do well, I'd recommend reading a lot in your free time to build up stamina. For the writing portion, you usually have to write one or two essays responding to a prompt or opinion piece. You have to organize your ideas logically, use proper grammar and vocabulary, and develop a persuasive argument. Writing practice essays is the best way to improve your skills.Last but not least, the speaking section tests your verbal English abilities through questions, prompts, and conversations. You may have to describe an image, answer open-ended questions, or have a back-and-forth discussion. My advice is to speak slowly and clearly, use transition words, and try to sound natural. Don't be afraid to ask for clarification if you need it!Across all four sections, the Guangdong exam evaluates your overall English level from intermediate to advanced across different skills like grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, comprehension and communication ability. There's a huge emphasis on using English in practical, real-world contexts. The listening recordings use various accents like American English, British English, Australian English and more. The reading passages cover topics from across different academic fields. And the speaking section tests your fluency in more casual, conversational English too.Preparing for this beast of an exam takes serious time and effort over a long period. You have to practice individual skills through focused exercises. You should take lots of full-length practice tests to get used to the format and time pressure. And you must review grammar rules, build up your vocabulary, and absorb tons of sample questions and materials. It's a ton of work, but stellar English skills can open up so many amazing opportunities! You could study at a top university, travel the world, get a super cool job...the possibilities are endless when you master this incredibly useful language.I'm just a kid, but I already know how vital English is these days, especially here in Guangdong with our internationalconnections. The 2024 Guangdong Postgraduate English Exam tests students at the highest level to make sure they're prepared to communicate effectively as global citizens. So studyyyy up, kids! Practice hard, don't give up, and keep a positive attitude. One day you could be the ones acing this crucial English exam and exciting next steps awaiting. The world is your oyster with fantastic English skills! Let me know if you have any other questions.篇5The 2024 Guangdong Postgraduate English Exam SyllabusHi everyone! My name is Xiaoming and I'm a 5th grade student. I've heard a lot about the Guangdong Postgraduate English Exam that older students have to take to get into university grad programs. My big sister is going to take it next year, so I asked her to explain the new 2024 syllabus to me. Here's what she said:The Guangdong Postgraduate English Exam tests how good you are at reading, writing, listening and speaking in English. It's a really important test for students who want to continue studying after college. The exam is changing a little bit for 2024, so let me tell you all about the new stuff!Reading SectionIn the reading section, you have to read a bunch of different passages and answer questions about them. The passages can be about all kinds of topics like science, culture, economics and more. Some are shorter passages around 300 words, while others are longer ones around 600-700 words. The big change for 2024 is that there will be more reading passages specifically about current events and news from 2023 and 2024. So you have to stay up-to-date on what's happening in the world! The questions test if you understand the main ideas, details, writers' views and tones.Writing SectionThe writing section is where you have to write two pieces - one shorter and one longer piece. For the short piece, you might have to write a summary, opinion essay or response to something. For the longer piece, you'll get an argument prompt and have to write a structured essay with an introduction, body paragraphs and conclusion. For 2024, the essay prompts will have more topics related to technology, artificial intelligence, climate change and other modern issues. So you may need to research and learn moreabout those areas. The essays are graded on your ideas, organization, grammar and vocabulary.Listening SectionI think the listening section is the hardest! You have to listen to recordings of lectures, conversations, news and more. Then you answer multiple choice and other questions testing if you understood the main points, details, purposes and implied meanings. The change for 2024 is that there will be more listening materials using different accents and dialects of English, like British, Australian, Indian and more. So you need to practice listening to many varieties of English speakers, not just American accents.Speaking SectionLastly, there's the speaking section where you have to record yourself giving spoken responses. You might describe an image, share and explain your opinion on something, or summarize what you heard. You get some prep time before each speaking task. For 2024, the image descriptions and opinion prompts will cover more modern topics about things like social media, onlinelearning, remote work and sustainable living. So learn how to discuss those kinds of subjects clearly and in-depth.Well, that's the overview of the new 2024 Guangdong Postgrad English Exam! My sister said it will still test the same core English skills, but the content and materials are being updated to be more relevant. She has already started preparing by reading international news, listening to podcasts in different accents, and practicing essays on modern topics.I'm just in elementary school, so this exam seems super hard and far away for me! But my sister is working really hard because doing well on it is crucial for getting into a good graduate program. I'll be cheering her on and maybe I'll be taking a version of this exam myself one day after finishing high school and college. For now, I'll keep working on my English skills bit by bit.Let me know if you have any other questions! Studying hard and avoiding procrastination is the key. The Waterslide TesterWhen the pool where he worked as a lifeguard was closed during the COVID-19pandemic,Guillaume Pop took jobs at various other pools that were virtually deserted. In one video on the social platform,he pretended to be a“professional waterslide tester”.Unexpectedly,Pop became a social media sensation. He was then hired to“test”slides and other facilities at water parks and swimming pools all over France.“It’s the best job in the world,”declares Pop,whose videos have received80million views.“I’m not behind a desk.I’m active and outside in the sun.In fact, all the children tell me they want to be a waterslide tester!”The Reindeer HerderFinnish Lapland is home to around200,000wild reindeer.Anne Ollila, one of the4,000owners of these animals, works in this harsh but beautiful region with her big family. She gave up her job as a sociology researcher in2010to devote herself to reindeer herding full time.In summer,Ollila sleeps during the day and walks up to12miles a night through marsh and forest, enduring all kinds of insects. In deepest winter there is little daylight.Grasslands are frozen and the reindeer move into the forest for protection.“Life here isn’t easy but it’s how nature works,”says Ollila,“I love the environment, the animals and the freedom. Also,I have a sense of belonging to something bigger than me,to the chain of life through the generations.”The Zombie TrainerStevie Douglas,a52-year-old Scot, has taught people how to behave like all varieties of the undead.A big fan of horror movies,Douglas noticed the zombies he saw in films were often unconvincing.“Their movement was poor and I thought I could do better.”So,in2012,he formed ScareScotland to provide zombies for films and events such as horror conventions.A year later they started a zombie training program, which took off when they received a request for300 zombies for a three-week-long interactive production.“What we do is very specific.”says Douglas. Many people enjoy being frightened, and he’s happy to oblige them.60.What do the three people introduced in the passage above have in common?A.Their jobs are dangerous, unstable and low-paid.B.Their jobs are well received throughout the world.C.They have great passion and pride in what they do.D.They need professional qualifications to do their job.61.What does Guillaume Pop like most about his job?A.It has a sense of freedom.B.It is full of vigor and energy.C.It is what he has been doing for decades.D.It satisfies people’s wishes to be frightened.62.Who is most probably interested in this passage?A.Employees who are considering switching jobs.B.Students who are applying for ideal universities.C.Children who are interested in unusual activities.D.Graduates who are deciding on their essay topics.(C)The phrase“coin toss”is a classic equivalent to randomness. But since at least the18th century, mathematicians have suspected that even fair coins tend to land on one side slightly more often than theother.Proving this tiny bias(偏见),however, would require hundreds of thousands of carefully recordedcoin tosses, making laboratory tests a nightmare.František Bartoš,currently a Ph.D.candidate at the University of Amsterdam, became fascinated by this challenge four years ago.He couldn’t round up enough volunteers to investigate it at first.“Nobody was stupid enough to spend a couple of weekends tossing coins,”he says. But after he began his Ph.D.studies,he tried again,recruiting47volunteers(many of them friends and fellow students)from six countries.Multiple weekends of coin tossing later, the team had performed 350,757tosses,breaking the previous record of40,000.The tossed coins, according to previous findings, landed with the same side facing upward as before the toss 50.8percent of the time. The large number of throws allows statisticians to conclude that the nearly one percent bias isn’t a fluke.“We can be quite sure there is a bias in coin tosses after this data set,”Bartošsays. The leading theory explaining the subtle advantage comes from a2007physics study by statistician Persi Diaconis and his colleagues, whose calculations predicted a same-side bias of51percent.From the moment a coin is launched into the air, its entire path in the air—including whether it lands on heads or tails—can be calculated by the laws of mechanics. The researchers determined that coins in the air barely turn around their symmetrical axis(对称轴);instead they tend to move off-center unsteadily, which causes them to spend a little more time in the air with their initial“up”side on top.For day-to-day decisions, coin tosses are as good as random because a one percent bias isn’t perceptible with just a few coin tosses, says another statistician who wasn’t involved in the new research.Still, the study’s conclusions should eliminate any doubt that still exists regarding the coin toss’s slim bias.It isn’t difficult to prevent this bias from influencing your coin-toss matches;simply concealing the coin’s starting position before tossing it should do the trick.Alternatively, you can do away with tossing altogether by shaking the coin between your palms. But if your friends are unaware of the tiny bias, you may as well benefit from your slight advantage. After all,51percent odds beat a lot.63.Why was it difficult to prove the tiny bias in coin tosses?A.Because it required a large number of trials and loads of tests.B.Because few scientists and researchers were interested in this topic.C.Because scientists lacked the ability and technique to conduct this study.D.Because previous researches failed many times and scientists lost confidence.64.The meaning of the underlined word fluke in paragraph3most probably refers to something that____________.A.happens by accidentB.can be planned in advanceC.occurs under specific conditionsD.can be gained by practice65.What can we imply from the last paragraph?A.This one percent bias matters little in real life.B.We should rely on this one percent bias to help us.C.Though unnoticeable,we may still take advantage of this bias.D.Relying on the one percent bias to win a coin-toss match is unfair.66.What is the best title of this passage?A.Risk-takers?Experts recommend coin-toss matches.B.Luck or Maths? Here’re some tips on tossing coins.C.Coin collectors? There’re stories behind each coin.D.Heads or Tails?Research suggests it’s not50-50.Section CDirections:Read the following passage.Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once.Note that there are two more sentences than you need. The young lead new trends in consumption marketWith the post-1990generation becoming a vibrant(充满活力的)force in society and the post-2000generation gradually entering the workforce, the purchasing power of the new generation of consumers has been steadily growing.(67)_______________________Growing up in the internet era,the young consumers generally have higher education levels and a broader global outlook, and come from a relatively strong economic background. As such, their consumption behavior is different from that of the earlier generations. In terms of consumption pattern, online shopping has become the top choice for young people.Young people not only comprise a comparatively high percentage of internet users but also tend to shop online.(68)_______________________ This makes them easily influenced by product promotions and influencers on social media. And yet a trend toward rational consumption has been growing rapidly over the past few years.(69) _______________________Instead,they focus more on product quality and functionality. They tend to compare products and services, and do some research before making purchasing decisions,in order to get the best out of their purchase. According to a study conducted by the Social Survey Center of China Youth Daily,90.1percent of the1,000young respondents said their consumption decision is based on the“spending where necessary and saving where possible”principle.Besides, young consumers seek more personalized and diversified products, reflecting their emotional needs and increasing sense of self-worth.(70)_____________________When it comes to brand cognition, young consumers seem to favor domestic products. Thanks to information online, young consumers no longer blindly pursue foreign brands and instead prefer local brands, highlighting their confidence in Chinese-made products. From Li-Ning,Anta to Warrior shoes, domestic brands in various fields are being warmly welcomed by young consumers.IV.Summary WritingDirections:Read the following passage.Summarize the main idea and the main point(s)of the passage in no more than60 e your own words as far as possible.71.The ingredients of loveIn modern times, finding love seems more central to people’s lives. Then, researchers wonder, can love,a highly valued emotional state,be created? To help determine the ingredients of attraction, one research paired164college classmates and had them talk for3,6 or10minutes to get a sense of each other’s individuality. Then students were asked to predict what kind of relationship they might build with their partners. After nine weeks, they reported what happened.Reports showed their initial judgments often held true. All these students seemed to distinguish at an early stage who would best fit into their lives.Scientists have also turned to nonhumans to increase understanding of attraction. Many animals give off pheromones —natural chemicals that can be detected by,and then can produce a response in,other animals of the same species. Pheromones can signal that an animal is either ready to fight or is feeling open to partnerships. In contrast, humans do notseem to be as gifted as other animals at detecting such chemicals.Smell, however, does seem to play a part in human attraction.Although we may not be aware of chemicals like pheromones consciously,we give and receive loads of information through smell in every interaction with other people.Being fond of someone seems to have a number of factors, including seeing something we find attractive.Researchers had people judge faces for attractiveness. The participants had0.013seconds to view each face, yet somehow they generally considered the images the same as people who had more time to study the same faces. The way we assess attractiveness seems to be somewhat automatic. When shown an attractive face and then words with good or bad associations, people responded to positive words faster after viewing an attractive face.Seeing something attractive seems to cause happy thinking.V.TranslationDirections:Translate the following sentences into English, using the words given in the brackets.72.

Last year, the new college entrance examination was first implemented across the country. Since then, the examination reform has continued to deepen, and the examination questions have also improved. In the latest c-paper of the English paper in 22 years, the listening test questions have been adjusted to be more diversified and comprehensive. This year's c-paper listening test mainly consists of three parts: short conversations, long conversations, and talks or lectures. The short conversations mainly test the candidates' ability to understand everyday social communication, while the long conversations focus on academic or educational topics. Thetalks or lectures are usually related to scientific or cultural knowledge. The difficulty of the questions also increases gradually in these three parts. In the short conversations section, candidates need to carefully listen to the dialogue and grasp the key information, such as names, dates, locations, and reasons. The questions may involve making appointments, giving directions, or expressing opinions. This part is designed to test the candidates' listening and comprehension skills in daily social situations. The long conversations section requires candidates to understand the main idea of the conversation, the relationship between the speakers, and the details mentioned in the dialogue. The topics may include academic discussions, study plans, or problem solving. Candidates need to pay attention to the speaker's tone, attitude, and emotions to better understand the context of the conversation. The talks or lectures section is usually more challenging, as it involves more complex and specialized content. Candidates need to focus on the main ideas, supporting details, and examples provided in the speech. The topics may cover various fields such as science, history, literature, or art. It requirescandidates to have a broad knowledge base and good listening skills to handle these questions.Overall, the listening test in the English c-paper of the22-year national new college entrance examination is designed to assess candidates' ability to understand spoken English in different contexts and situations. It requires candidates to have good listening skills, vocabulary, and comprehension abilities. By practicing more listening exercises and improving their English proficiency, candidates can better prepare for the listening test and achieve good results in the examination.篇3The New College Entrance Examination in 2022With the reform and improvement of the education system, the new college entrance examination has been implemented in 2022. The new system aims to focus more on students' comprehensive abilities rather than just their performance in standardized tests. The new college entrance examination consists of four parts: Chinese, Mathematics, English, and a comprehensive ability test. The comprehensive ability test includes subjects such as science, history, geography, politics, and physical education. This test isdesigned to evaluate students' abilities in various fields, rather than just their memory and test-taking skills. One of the major changes in the new college entrance examination is the introduction of project-based assessments. Students are required to complete projects that demonstrate their ability to solve real-life problems, work independently, and communicate effectively. This new approach is meant to better prepare students for the challenges they will face in college and beyond.Another significant change is the emphasis on creativity and critical thinking. The new college entrance examination includes questions that require students to think critically and creatively, rather than just regurgitate information. This shift is meant to encourage students to develop their analytical andproblem-solving skills, which are essential for success in the modern world.Overall, the new college entrance examination in 2022 is a step towards a more holistic and student-centered education system. By focusing on students' comprehensive abilities, encouraging creativity and critical thinking, and incorporating project-based assessments, the new system aims to better prepare students for the challenges of the future.。

Each paragraph is marked with a letter. How the West Views Our AnimalsA) The Chinese lunar new year “Tiger” is coming. How does a Westerner see each of the 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac (生肖)? Some answers to these questions and more are as follows:B) Rat: The Chinese see rats as dirty, but they also think laoshu are smart. Most people in the West, however, see little good in the creature. Mice, on the other hand, are more likeable. To be “quiet as a mouse” means to be pleasantly qui et. No one in their right mind wants to be called “a rat”, which suggests that they are crafty, dishonest and selfish.C) Ox: Westerners respect the ox for its strength and hard-working spirit. However, bulls are generally viewed negatively because of their aggressive nature. Cows are considered the “cutest” of the three. In fact, in the US, people often decorate their homes with pictures of cows. The animal is associated with the comfort and quiet of a country home.D) Tiger: Simply put, if you see a tiger, you'd better run. In the West, a tiger may be a beautiful woman or a handsome man. Calling someone a tiger means you understand that they can be dangerous. “Tiger” is also used to describe spoiled little children. They look cute, but they are often up to some bad behavior.E) Rabbit: Many Chinese think the rabbit is cute and docile (温顺的). However, few Americans can say the word “rabbit” without thinking of the clever cartoon character Bugs Bunny. Also, rabbits are known in the West as being extremely reproductive. They can produce three or four litters (一胎生下的小动物) a year, with up to six rabbits in each.F) Dragon: The dragon has come to be a political symbolassociated with China. Many people see China as a great dragon: ancient and beautiful, but also mysterious. The famous song Puff, the Magic Dragon, written by Leonard Lipton and Peter Yarrow, tells the story of one such creature.G) Snake: The snake is often seen as a dangerous or wicked creature, though serpent (蟒蛇) is more often used in contexts discussing evil. The Western image of an evil serpent calls up the Bible's depiction of Satan as a serpent. In the Bible the serpent tempts the first woman Eve into disobeying God.H) Horse: They are known for their beauty and strength. In the US, they may be kept as pets by people who can afford to raise them.I) Sheep: Sheep are viewed docile and weak. They also carry the image of a “follower”. In a church, a priest is a “shepherd (牧羊人)”. The people in the church are his “flock”. The word “sheep” has also been used t o describe people who buy into the latest commercial fashion. The word “goat” is not often used and they have no special meaning.J) Monkey: Throughout the world, monkeys are known to be clever though a little impatient. You might also call someone who li kes to joke around a “monkey”. Nothing is wrong with that. However, in the US, the word has also been used as a racist term that refers to African-Americans.K) Rooster (公鸡): To the Chinese, a rooster is strong and proud. The chicken, on the other hand, is viewed as weak, or even stupid. These views also apply in the West. For instance, you might call someone who is afraid to dive into a pool a “chicken”. The word “hen”, on the other hand, carries a motherly image of protection and comfort.L) Dog: D ogs a re called “man's best friends” in the West. That's why many Westerners refuse to eat them. In the US, an old TV show called Lassie reflects people's high respect for dogs. In every episode, Lassie, a white and brown collie (粗毛牧羊犬), saves the day. However, as loved as dogs are, the word is sometimes used cruelly to refer to an ugly woman.M) Boar: The word “boar” usually refers to a wild pig. These animals are often difficult to capture and extremely ugly. The word “pig” most often refers to the farm-raised animal. They have the reputation of being lazy and dirty. In English, the word can also refer to someone who eats a lot. Also, playboys are sometimes called “pigs” by women who see them as selfish and shallow.46. A tiger can be referred to different things, such as a good-looking person or a spoiled little child.47. In the West, bulls are viewed negatively while cows are considered to be cute.48. In the Westerners' eyes, a mouse is lovely.credit cards.”Dunn says a lot of these young people are never going to getout from under their credit card debt. “Many people are borrowing on credit cards so heavily that payoff rates at these levels are not sufficient to recover their credit card debt by the end of their life, which could have loss implications for the credit card issuing banks.”61.
